Opinion

The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 7

Sergio Aguero may have saved my season.

I genuinely think that, had he not flung his arm in the direction of Winston Reid’s chops, my squad would be on a very different path to the one it now occupies.

Looking back at my Gameweek 3 line-up, aside from the obvious clanger in backing Riyad Mahrez, it’s difficult to see where I was going wrong. Sitting outside of the top million managers having just ranked 2.9 million in the world, I was pretty much clueless on how I would transform my fortunes.

Aguero’s indiscretion changed that. His suspension pushed me into playing an early Wildcard and, from that point on, it appears to have turned for me.

The timing could hardly have been better. Three Gameweeks provided just enough data to go on.

Everton and Arsenal had ridiculously strong fixtures and Manchester City had already revealed themselves as a seemingly unstoppable attacking force.

These factors appeared to signpost moves for Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Raheem Sterling – they all presented convincing arguments and Aguero’s ban offered the means and the courage to seal the deal.

In hindsight, this now seems obvious.

Jonty’s dig at my template midfield in this week’s ScoutCast resonated so much because it’s easy, three weeks on, to arrive at the conclusion that the targets are clear.

The fact that Sterling has increased in price by 0.5, Sanchez 0.3 and Lukaku 0.4, all since arriving in my squad, indicates that it perhaps wasn’t quite so obvious to all ahead of Gameweek 4.

But without that one event – without Aguero’s ill-timed elbow, I doubt I would have moved for any of that trio.

My rank now simmers around the 100k mark; my squad value has increased by 2.2 in the space of just three and a bit Gameweeks.

None of that would have happened without Aguero getting his ban.

I can take some credit for the decisions but judgement on transfers isn’t my biggest issue as a Fantasy manager – we are all capable of making good decisions.

My key flaw has always been my lack of conviction when it comes to backing myself. That’s where the Aguero suspension came in.

It was a convenient twist in the season that played into my hands and one which I was able to exploit. That much was pure luck.

Now I have to maintain momentum. My recent decisions to ship Zlatan Ibrahimovic and now Michail Antonio, reflect a new approach.

I’ve got to take inspiration from the Gameweek 4 Wildcard.

All too often in previous seasons, I find myself backtracking and retreating, only really making a big decision when an injury or suspension makes it feel safe.

Now I have to urge myself to back brave transfer moves without having an event like Aguero’s ban to make it easy.

It could all go badly wrong. I’m losing decent players, explosive assets.

But I have to hope that I win more often than I lose. At least it feels like I’m genuinely playing the game rather than being passive and letting things pan out. I’m on a new path and, while it’s going well, it feels right.

Come back to me on Sunday night after Zlatan and Antonio have spanked me and I will doubtless feel very different.

One way or another, it’s all going to trace back to Aguero – the point of his elbow providing a fortunate catalyst.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yes, but I'm just uncertain on how Bilic will solve the West Ham issue. He could even move Antonio up front.

But, in the end, I think there's a chance Walcott can cement his start. If you look at Antonio, Son, Lallana and Walcott and presume 100% starts, there's no competition for me, Walcott is potentially the biggest points scorer.

Of course, Walcott won't start every game but I'm hoping he'll start enough over the net 4-5 to outscore the others mentioned.

The key decisions were Lukaku, Sanchez & Defoe vs Costa, Ozil & Benteke. Jonty's selections have done well but not quite kept pace with points or value and Sanchez has really been the killer. I think it's smart to spend the points now to get him in - just surprised he overlooked Ibra with the armband.

It's just good that we're seeing very different teams. For all his talk of the template, we both know that this season doesn't appear to be anywhere near as settled as previous campaigns. He could close the gap back on me and flip it back in his favour just as quickly, whereas in previous seasons, I think it was more difficult because options were more limited.

          • 8 Years

Absolutely he has done the right thing.. Sanchez right in the middle of one of his purple patches will destroy any non owner with ambitions of a respectable rank.. captaining him could well be the right call too not a lot to separate him Kun or Ibra this week..

Shaping up for a great GW buzzing for the scoutcast already 🙂

Ahead of tomorrow's early kick off, I'm pondering on what it would take for me to keep/ditch Ibra.

Would a goal, an assist or merely BPs be enough to warrant the price tag? I think for me, my expectations are 6pts absolute minimum...

Honestly I think he will get a brace at a minimum. He will convert his chances this time, at home to a poor Stoke defence with an even poorer goalkeeper.

Great Article. I can totally relate to this bit:

"My key flaw has always been my lack of conviction when it comes to backing myself."

Same here. For example, I have a free transfer this week and could easily do the underperforming Firmino to a rejuvenated Coutinho or Lallana. But will I? No. it would take Firmino falling under a bus before I'd consider this sort of move and even then I'd worry that the surgeons might have Bobby playing after the International Break.

Well in previous seasons we could sit on assets, knowing that other options won't explode and hurt us. This season, I'm not sure.

That was my point with Antonio - I could have kept him and he'll probably get a goal or two over the next four. But, I just felt that Walcott could get 4-5 goals over his next four.

Last season, I don't think that was the case - the players capable of such returns just weren't about or in form so we sat on Mahrez and Alli and got away with it.

That's why I chose to ship out Agüero and Routledge for Lukaku and Antonio gw4, saving the wildcard for gw6, to get Agüero back. Costa out. Being Sanchez-less has been my biggest concern these latest gameweeks. Will I be equally concerned after tomorrows game?...

For sure Lukaku. He has only got 20.7% ownership so is a differential, only costs £9.3m so you will save a lot by offloading Ibra and has 36 points in the last 4 gameweeks (one more than Ibra's entire total!)
