Scout Notes – International Round-up

Dusan Tadic and Diego Costa maintain a rich vein of form but can’t prevent an injury scare for Sergio Aguero from dominating this morning’s matters.

Aguero Concern for Guardiola

According to reports surfacing from the Argentina camp, Sergio Aguero suffered a calf strain in training and is now a doubt for their World Cup qualifier with Paraguay on Tuesday.

Reports suggest that the City striker will undergo scans ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, with Pep Guardiola undoubtedly waiting anxiously for a prognosis.

Aguero has suffered from a string of calf problems of late and was withdrawn from the Argentina squad back in August with a similar complaint.

Guardiola and Aguero’s army of Fantasy Premier League owners will now wait on further news ahead of City’s Gameweek 8 Etihad meeting with Everton.

The City boss can at least take some comfort from the fact that Kelechi Iheanacho (6.9) remains in scoring form: the 20-year-old was on target for Nigeria in their 2-1 win over Zambia.

There were also notable performances elsewhere in the City camp, as Nolito (8.8) registered a goal for Spain against Albania, with David Silva (8.7) providing an assist.

Silva has been subdued in the league to date, with just the one assist from six starts, while Nolito has two goals and two assists despite only starting four matches.

With Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) remaining a doubt for the Everton clash, Nolito’s goal served as a timely reminder to coach Pep Guardiola of his capabilities.

The winger will be eligible to return to the City line-up having served out his three-match ban in the defeat to Spurs in Gameweek 7.

Left-back Aleksandar Kolarov (5.9) completed the solid City showing over the weekend with an assist for Serbia’s winner against Austria.

Star Turn Tadic

If there was an award for player of the international break, Serbia’s Dusan Tadic (7.2) would be wise to start working on his acceptance speech.

The Southampton midfielder scored one and set up two in Thursday’s 3-0 victory in Moldova and did precisely the same last night to help his country to a 3-2 home win over Austria.

Tadic went into the international break in decent form, with a goal and two assists from his last four starts, and has a good fixture at home to Burnley on Sunday to try and continue in the same vein.

Throw in the theory that the Saints have a thing for Gameweek 8 performances – an 8-0 mauling of Sunderland followed by a win at Stamford Bridge last year – and Tadic looks an attractive prospect.

But Man City away and Chelsea at home to follow will be considerably tougher tests for the Saints – and they might have to face them without Shane Long (6.1).

The Republic of Ireland striker has blanked in the league this season, but scored the opener in the Republic of Ireland’s 3-1 win in Moldova before hobbling off in the second half with a suspected hamstring injury.

A potential absence for Long would seem certain to cement Charlie Austin’s starting role. Austin has started the last two Premier League outings, restricting Long to appearances from the bench.

With new signing Sofiane Boufal also nearing fitness, Long’s position in the Saints’ pecking order is now in serious doubt.

Costa continues to tempt investors

Spain’s players had a whip round to give Diego Costa (10.1) a laptop and a cake for his birthday before the Chelsea striker paid it back with yet another goal – the opener in the 2-0 win over Albania.

There are few forwards in better shape than Costa at the moment. Six goals and two assists have taken him to the top of the FPL strikers’ charts with 46 points and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero are the only front men owned by more managers than his 29.1% of backers.

Only Tottenham Hotspurs’ Son Heung-min has enjoyed more FPL investment over the break so far, with Costa earning almost 100,000 new owners at the time of writing.

Chelsea have three home matches out of the next four coming up, but face Leicester City, Man United and Everton, with a tricky trip to Southampton thrown in

And Costa wouldn’t be Costa without a suspension threat hanging over him – he picked up his fourth yellow card of the season in the Gameweek 6 loss at Arsenal – so is one caution away from a ban.

Iwobi nets for Nigerians

Alex Iwobi (5.8) stock continues to rise home and away, having starred and scored for Nigeria in their win over Zambia.

The 20-year-old has started the last three matches for the Gunners to offer a cut-price route into the Arsenal midfield ahead of blossoming fixtures.

With Swansea City and Middlesbrough at home and Sunderland away to come over the next three Gamweeks, Iwobi presents a viable option for those unable to stretch to cover Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott.

Given his current form for club and country, Iwobi’s minutes look protected – particularly while Sanchez remains Arsene Wenger’s option as a central striker.

Heaton Bows Out of England squad

Burnley’s Tom Heaton added to a cast of notable injury doubts ahead of Gameweek 8 with news of his withdrawal from the England squad for the trip to Slovenia.

The news broke overnight with Burnley’s official Twitter account announcing that Heaton was being withdrawn due to “minor injury”.

Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford – another key Fantasy asset – has been called up to replace Heaton in the squad.

McClean at the double

West Brom wide man James McClean (5.0) was instrumental in Republic of Ireland’s 3-1 win over Moldova.

The Baggies wide man netted twice in the second period, as he steps up in form after producing a goal and assist in the first seven Gameweeks.

McClean has started four of the last five Premier League fixtures, yet with Spurs, Liverpool, Man City and Leicester up next, investment in Tony Pulis’ team looks best left for the time being.

Seamus Coleman (5.5) – who notched the winner against Georgia earlier in the international break – provided an assist, as did Stoke City’s Jon Walters (5.7)

Costa 's overall ownership is almost 30% yet he is still a no go for many people here. The 2 reasons I see common are:

    1) He is a card magnet and a suspension waiting to happen.
    2) He is a bap repellent.

I think it is a big mistake to dismiss him and this is why:

    1) He is the only player to have just one blank to his name after playing 7 games (KDB missed some to injury) and has 2 double figure returns which means he has proved so far to be a safe captain pick, fixture proof and explosive as well.

    2) He is Chelsea's focal point and will challenge for the golden boot. The goals will keep coming. I expect him to score 20+ goals.

    3) He will not be a bap repellent this year. He has collected 6 baps so far and will do much better than previous years in this regard because:
    a) Last year Chelsea were a disaster so almost everybody at Chelsea was a bad fpl pick. Everyone was agitated and with Costa already short tempered, he as a disaster waiting to happen.
    b) In 2014/2015, Costa was a very good fpl pick but was constantly beaten to baps by Hazard and Fabregas who both had stellar seasons.
Fabregas's days are numbered at Chelsea and Hazard's form is dire. If Costa continues scoring and Chelsea's form improve, Costa will get a lot of baps.

The downside to Costa is that he is 1 YC away from a suspension but it is only 1 game anyway. Surely our bench should be able to handle that easily. Costa seems to me the best option for those looking to offload Ibra. I am very tempted to go that way. Anyone in the same boat?

I've had Costa for the last 4 gameweeks and duly reaped the rewards: 12/6/1/12. Captained him last week 🙂

Very nicely done. Hazard's slump came at a perfect time for you. His bad form is important for Costa to remain in line for baps.

Costa is arguably one of the top 3 forwards, along with Aguero and Lukaku, and better value than Ibra, and a possible captaincy option, so there is certainly a case to be made for him.

But we can't include everyone. If we have all of those three, then we will have to cut corners either in our midfield or in our defence.

He is also a little more expensive than Lukaku and, as you say, a card magnet. He's not a bad option, but it is not possible to fit all the best forwards, midfielders and defenders into our template, so some of them will have to miss out..

I can get him for Ibra and have Kun Costa Lukaku and a midfield of Sterling Firmino Milner Snoddy and Capoe with 1.5m in the bank to upgrade Milner to Walcott. Doesn't look weak to me at all.

I can see him outscoring Sanchez over the course of the season. Sanchez for me is poor value for money when there is Walcott around and performing.

As I said, someone has to miss out.
I don't think many would doubt that Sanchez is one of the top five midfielders, but if it's a choice between Costa, Sanchez and Walcott then Sanchez could arguably be the best one to miss out, especially if you think Costa is a better captaincy candidate than Sanchez.

There are alternatives though, such as downgrading Costa to Defoe.
And can you still afford three top defenders?
And will you be able to fit KDB in when he's fit again?

For me Sanchez misses out at the moment. With Arsenal there is an inform mid priced option that I can captain. With Chelsea I wouldn't captain Willian for example. Costa is the only way to go.

If you look at the baseline bps charts that were posted recently, Costa is VERY low. If Chelsea keep clean sheets (which I expect they will start doing), a goal will never be enough to get Costa any bps. He gets a lot of yellow cards, and arguably should've been sent off on more than one occasion already this season, so a red might be just around the corner. He will get suspensions and miss parts of the season, and can you really risk captaining a red card?

I also just don't like him as a player, so i'm keeping him away from my team. Would much rather have Kun, Lukaku or Ibra.

fixtures are poor also he needs to do more than score 1 goal for bonus. These are key reasons, as well as midfielders offering more for less and strikers like Deeney, Benteke and Defoe offering value in a front line that will most likely also include 13m worth of Aguero. The one card from a ban is also key.

Having said that I regret ditching him and agree he is, after Aguero, arguably the best and most reliable source of striker points.

Also I love that like Aguero he is the focal point of attacks - something that we addressed in a recent hot topic recently.

I'm very tempted, as part of a new found recklessness in transfers, to get him in for Ibra. Looks the best captain this week after Aguero - who may very well be injured.

Maybe injured, travelling a lot, playing a solid Everton and has Barca midweek. I don't agree Aguero is the best option this week. Costa at home against a dreadful Leceister on the road who may have one eye on the CL fixture looks the best bet to me.

Can you see Defoe, Deeney and Benteke matching the similarly priced midfielders like Son, Walcott or even Milner? Apart from Benteke, I think Defoe and Deeney will have lengthy spells of blanks playing for 2 teams that will be fighting relegation.

With strikers confidence plays a bigger part. If they are confident then yes. Benteke especially can score against anyone.

All those mentioned though are much of a muchness, with Benteke and Walcott having the slight edge for me.

I would put money on him getting his 5th YC in the Man U game which would mean he would serve his suspension in the League Cup rather than the PL

If he doesn't serve his suspension in the cup game, you can survive 1 GW. Your bench should be able to handle that.

I think you make a good point about his reputation obscuring his excellent production this season.

For me, it is a value decision, as Red Lightning points out above -- plenty of less expensive midfielders just a bit cheaper are offering the same production and explosiveness. To name a few: Sterling, Firmino, Coutinho, Payet give you roughly the same points at a lower cost. If you have Aguero and Sanchez as captain choices, you can play the long game a bit with a more expensive midfield, and for me that means no Costa.

Your point still stands, though -- he is one of the ten best attackers to have right now.

How is he worse value than Sanchez? The same mid-priced midfield opions that are matching Costa are also matching Sanchez which makes him even less value for money as he is 1.2m more expensive. I think the premium options should pull away from the midpriced ones as the season goes on. Otherwise, we can just ignore the premium options altogether.

For captaincy, Costa is almost on par on points with Sanchez but provides more steady returns meaning less chance of a blank if you captain him. With Sanchez so far it has been either a blank or a huge score which makes it more difficult to nail as a captaincy decision when you have Kun as the default captain most weeks.

        1. tm245
          • 12 Years

You know, that is a good question -- for me, Sanchez is as cemented in my team as Aguero. They are the two special players in the league and FPL as far as I'm concerned so if they are playing they are in my team. So for me, team shape is all about filling the other five attacking slots with as much potential as I can afford and then the eighth attacker is my 4.5m man. Right now, I would rather save the cash on Costa/Lukaku and spread it across the midfield.

However, if you value consistency over explosiveness in the premium captaincy bracket, then Costa is certainly a consideration.

Well Costa has 2 double figure returns to Sanchez's 3 so I think he can match him for explosiveness as well. This however depends a lot on Hazard. If Chelsea improve dramatically, you probably have to think it means Hazard is back to 2014/2015 levels which means he would directly dominate the baps and would be the Chelsea asset to own like in the first 3 GWs. Either that or Costa scores braces and hattricks more regularly which is less likely.

Another point in my consideration is that I expect Chelsea to improve dramatically and Arsenal to regress when the schedule gets busier. This we know from past experience. It happens with Arsenal every season. A slump in November and another in February and the chance for winning trophies evaporates.

I would ask the same but not Costa .. Payet ??
I know there's alot of options at 7.0 to 8.5 are playing well (so he seems like an expensive option ) but no one here mentioning him is surprising me.
Not only in fpl , overall i think he's underrated If Ronaldo/messi scored that goal vs Midd or assist like he did vs Watford , their fans would eat us ....
