Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

West Brom’s Jonny Evans became the latest player to topple from the Suspension Tightrope after earning a booking in Saturday’s 1-1 home draw against Spurs.

Sitting in 8.4% of Fantasy Premier League teams, the Baggies centre-half picked up his fifth caution in the first eight Gameweeks and will now serve a one-match ban away to Liverpool next time out.

There are now nine players sitting just one yellow card short of a suspension.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa remains the main point of concern for Fantasy managers.

Having risen to joint-top of the FPL standings with a seventh goal of the season in Saturday lunchtime’s 3-0 win over Leicester, the Blues’ frontman has been subject to 52,000+ transfers in and now sits in 24.1% of sides ahead of a visit from Jose Mourinho’s Man United on Sunday.

The sceptics amongst us will suggest that Antonio Conte must surely be aware that a booking against the Red Devils would then allow Costa to serve out his suspension in the midweek EFL Cup clash with West Ham.

With that in mind, they’d be no real surprise to see Costa incur the referee’s wrath once again this weekend.

Elsewhere, Watford’s weekend goal hero Jose Holebas, along with Jordan Henderson, Ryan Shawcross and Claudio Yacob also remain on four cautions after successfully navigating Gameweek 8 without incident.

Holebas is the most transferred in defender in the Gameweek after his 15-point haul away to ‘Boro on Sunday but would-be suitors need to be aware that, due to defeat at home to Gillingham in late August, the Hornets are no longer involved in the EFL Cup.

Any booking Holebas therefore receives prior to the cut-off point in Gameweek 19 will ensure he misses Premier League duties.

That quintet are joined by Robert Huth, Marouane Fellaini, Gaston Ramirez and Marko Arnautovic on four yellows apiece after all four were cautioned in the previous round of fixtures.

In terms of new suspensions, Aaron Cresswell will now miss West Ham’s home clash with Middlesbrough after an eventful first appearance of the season.

Finally recovered from a knee injury, the defender was utilised as a wing-back at Selhurst Park and supplied the assist for Manuel Lanzini’s winner. Two quick second-half bookings resulted in a sending off and one-match ban.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka is set to start a three-match suspension after being sent off for a reckless lunge on Swansea winger Mo Barrow on Saturday.

Incredibly, that was the Swiss international’s eighth dismissal in just two-and-a-half years, meaning he will miss Gameweeks 9-10 in addition to an EFL Cup encounter with Reading.

They join Andre Gray on the sidelines, with the Burnley striker set to serve out the last of a four-fixture ban this weekend as Sean Dyche’s side welcome Everton to Turf Moor.

Thinking about cash out on Capoue to upgrade this defense:
Valencia, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat - 2FT, 0 idb

    A) Williams -> Clyne
    B) Valencia -> Mustafi
    C) Capoue -> Allen and rotate with Snodgrass, defense is ok
    D) Evans to 3.9 and Williams -> Vertonghen, keep Capoue for now

No interest in getting rid of Ibra? Out of form, price dropping, expensive to keep long term unless you have faith in him turning i around and outscoring Costa who is still 1.3M cheaper - long term.

I think 1.3m could go a long way if you think they will be in about the same spot come the end of the year...

It is a nice team, certainly, and if you love Snodgrass fixtures, he's certainly fine to play as he's on pens, I just worry about the longer term negative effect of still holding Ibra when he loses you 0.2m/0.3m or so more if he doesn't score against Chelsea. Costa is a battering ram in form. Let's say Ibra goes down to 11.1m-11.3m - of course you will keep for Burnley at home, but is that loss of 0.2m - 0.3m worth it long term for team value? Am struggling with this question as well as also have 2 free transfers and Ibra.

Snodgrass is ok, not great but I don't know who else I want at the moment in midfield. Costa v Ibra next 3, Ibra wins for me and I don't think 0.2m in team value makes much difference

              Sanchez-Firmino-Antonio-Capoue-de Roon
              Lukaku-Ibra-Aguero

I have 1M in the bank and two free transfers.

A lot of work to do as 4-5 players I don't want mid-term, but with 3 transfers (-4) can solve most of the issues.

                Antonio
                Ibra
                Evans
                Jak
                Capoue

Likely in that order of urgency. I can do the first three with a -4 and bring IN

Walcott, Mustafi, and Costa this week.

If I had that team I would probably drop Ibra, makes sense so you can get Walcott in for Antonio and also upgrade capoue and eventually the defence

Thx, that's my thought process for now. Can bring him back (maybe at a cheaper price) if Walcott continues to perform and I want to remove Sanchez. Too top heavy for now. I have had Zlatan since week 1 so it has been tough to see his decline but would prefer to cut him now and focus on improving marginally elsewhere. This way, I can save the transfer next week and have 2 free transfers when Capoue's fixtures get bad.

Costa's lack of European football and Walcott's form (and likely price rises) also help in the decision making.

Thx. The question is do I do the two (for free) Costa and Walcott in, Antonio and Ibra OUT, or do I also add in a -4 and upgrade either JAKUPOVIC, KELLY OR EVANS while I am at it to a more reliable GK (De Gea, Cech, etc.) or Defender (Mustafi or Walker) would have an additional 1.5M in the bank to make the move...

I'd say take a -4 for the defence. I'd be tempted to get some cheaper than Costa, like Austin or Wilson then you don't have to wait another week to upgrade capoue. Costa fixtures are bad anyway and if he doesn't get a yellow this week you'll lose him for 1 game

Interesting am happy to keep Cap for 2 more weeks and drop after Swansea/Hull - not as urgent for me - will upgrade in 2 weeks time. I had a great time with AUSTIN two years ago when he was at QPR, owned him most of the season and do like him, but that gives me way too much money in the bank to play with. I am always the type that likes to maximize the money on the pitch and not leave much in the bank so with Walcott a top priority in, and the need to get Ibra out, Costa really is the only option unless I go Austin and have 4M left over for Capoue in two weeks and hold on to 4M for two weeks?

Is Hearing supposed to be Heaton?

If you still have faith in Ibra then sounds good.
I lost faith in Uniteds attack though and would get Costa instead.
Or perhaps someone cheap like Austin to upgrade Snod or Sterling.

Yes sorry Heaton. Who would you get in for Sterling/Snodgrass? Ibra has Burnley and Swansea after next game, was thinking about holding for those, maybe captain v Burnley

I wouldn't captain a player who hasn't scored in 5 games (assuming he doesn't against Chelsea) but since you don't have Sanchez (at Sunderland next week) Ibra would be a great captain choice if he passes the eye test - scores/assists against Chelsea or even in league cup...

I'd captain Walcott over Sanchez at the moment anyway. So it'll be him or Ibra next week. Don't want to bring Sanchez in now since fixtures turn in 2 more weeks

He could've so easily had a few goals in these games. I know he didn't but it's fine margins. Hes getting chances, he's the main man in a top 4/6 team and undoubtedly a top finisher. Goals will come for him

The main reason I'm keeping him is that I don't see any great replacements and also no good way of spending the cash. Happy to have 2 frees next week and the same decision again

fair enough although you can say that about many players(could have had goals etc)....not for me...never gonna be your baps magnet or score 3-5 goals....just doesn't warrant price tag, but only my humble opinion.....

Yeah I think you could say that about many players. If they're good players and getting chances I think that's what's important, not so much their recent output. Anyway we'll see, might massively regret it

    Heaton / Foster
    Walker / Baines / Smith / Holebas / Amat
    Sterling / Firmino / Son / Snodgrass / Capoue
    Aguero / Costa / Lukaku

    2FT 0.5 itb

    Thinking Baines > Mustafi

Any other transfer I should do?
    Sterling > Walcott?
Cash out on Capoue? Got him for 4.5 so would get 4.9

Anyone notice spurs have insane fixtures from GW 16-33. I know that's still quite far away but a spurs defenders and midfielder will be essential then. Maybe Kane as well if he find his form again.

Only reason Kosc has risen in price is that his attemps has found the net.
I'd go for Mustafi and save the money.

As soon as the last GW ended, I was completely gutted, but as time has gone on, I've gotten over my loss and realised that actually my team for next week looks very nice, only obviously lacking Walcott. I'll be watching the Arsenal game from behind the sofa but this starting XI looks very pleasing, after a Robertson to Holebas FT:

    Grant (hul)
Bellerin (MID), Rose (bou), Holebas (swa)
Firmino (WBA), Sanchez (vc) (MID), Payet (c) (SUN), Son (bou)
Aguero (SOU), Deeney (swa), Defoe (whu)

    You like?
