Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 9

We round off coverage of Gameweek 9 with the regular digestible summary, embracing a Liverpool asset who has elevated his status, a City striker who has us questioning unwritten rules and a revitalised force in West London who may just provide us with new solutions.

The Player

When Philippe Coutinho fired a Gameweek 1 brace at Arsenal, sparking an early transfer bandwagon, the majority of seasoned Fantasy Football managers sat back and watched.

We’d seen enough of the silky Brazilian to recognise an ability to light up matches with his brilliance and, more importantly, a talent for the spectacular.

At the same time, we were more than hesitant to promote Coutinho to heavy-hitter status, let alone declare him as an essential component of our squads.

Since then, that scepticism has been somewhat justified.

Coutinho simmered following his 15-point haul, but was then derailed by international exertions that saw him restricted to a sub role for the 4-1 mauling of champions Leicester City.

That was enough to distract us – to have us focus attention on team-mates Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.

Arguably, however, Coutinho has now done enough to drown out their claims and extinguish our concerns.

While Mane outscored him in Saturday’s against West Bromwich Albion, it was Coutinho who again picked up the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points as he inspired the Liverpool victory.

The 10-points lifted him within touching distance of Arsenal pairing Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott at the summit of the midfield standings, ahead of an extraordinary run of fixtures that hands him the platform to supersede the Gunners’ duo.

That schedule offers the ideal opportunity to abandon all doubts – even with another of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield installed, Coutinho as a second option, now looks an almost irresistible force.

Much as we’d like to look down on the swathes of managers who jumped on his potential back in Gameweek 1, contributing to his burgeoning 36% ownership, non-owners are now faced with acknowledging that their decision to become early adopters appears valid.

The Team

We expected a reaction to the Gameweek 6 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal but few would have anticipated what has followed.

Antonio Conte was emphatic with his changes following that 3-0 setback.

Amidst rumours and speculation of unrest, the Italian’s preferred three-man defence was installed.

The significance of the signing of Marcos Alonso, a capture that raised eyebrows, became clear as he was deployed as an forward-thinking left wing-back. Remarkably, the much-maligned Fantasy asset that is Victor Moses was stationed on the opposite flank.

The change has transformed Chelsea to likely also-rans to true top four contenders once again.

Three victories, three clean sheets and, crucially, Fantasy returns have flowed.

The 4-0 demolition of Manchester United was undoubtedly the finest hour, offering confirmation that we need to re-assess the Stamford Bridge offerings.

Conte’s system has expanded our options.

Eden Hazard assumes top billing along with Diego Costa, both timing their continued ascent to coincide with mounting doubts on the funds tied up in Sergio Aguero.

But Chelsea’s prospects may not end with those two former heavy-hitters.

The aforementioned Alonso is rapidly pushing for top bracket consideration in defence, while even N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic have been transformed from non-scoring bench fodder, to genuinely profitable budget midfield options.

A string of testing fixtures for the month ahead may dampen our enthusiasm for now.

But navigate the forthcoming spell successfully, with Fantasy potential intact, and Chelsea’s new revived cast of assets can present profitable targets for the Christmas period.

The Talking Point

We’ve never really had doubts on Sergio Aguero.

When he’s fit, he sits at the top of our priority list – comforting those who have him in their squad, stalking those who dare to ignore him.

A timebomb of points potential, we’ve learned to grin and bear the brief lulls in his output, safe in the knowledge that an explosion of points is imminent. He rarely disappoints.

But now a series of events have chained together to stir up new concerns.

Words swapped between the player and manager Pep Guardiola appear to suggest that Aguero is being dragged from his comfort zone.

It seems that the striker is being tasked with closing down defenders, switching his priority from waiting to spring the last man, to shutting down the opponent and winning back possession.

The City manager made no qualms about dropping Aguero to the bench in Barcelona – adamant that he could not fulfil his tactical vision for that match.

Suddenly, we can’t be certain on Aguero’s pitch time.

A second leg with Barcelona and another international break beckon – factors that could influence Aguero’s minutes for Premier League fixtures that, ordinarily, would appear profitable encounters for his owners.

With just two points from his last three Gameweeks, can we really go to Aguero with the armband?

If not, then surely his lofty price tag becomes a liability in a FPL landscape that appears to be promoting a five-man midfield, comprised of double-figure scoring big-hitters?

These questions and concerns are currently circling, praying on our minds and leading us to consider a potential exit plan.

Over 40,000 at the time of writing have already shown Aguero to the door. The rest of us will wait on his Gameweek 10 performance at West Bromwich Albion, willing him to show us enough to calm matters.

We have enjoyed five seasons which have seen the Argentine stand out as an almost unshakable Fantasy asset – stalled only by a string of injury doubts.

The fact that we’re now questioning the merits of a fully-fit Aguero demonstrates another twist in what has become the most testing of Fantasy campaigns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Choose:

    A) KDB (Have Aguero)
    B) Hazard

KDB's fixtures are good and when he's fit he delivers. But is he worth it with so much rotation at City and a tightly packed schedule.

Hazard's fixtures are but he's in form and the new formation seems to suit him & Chelsea.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

    Evening lads!

What do you make of this lot then?

    Heaton,
    Marcos Alonso, Holebas, Fuchs,
    Walcott, Firmino, Coutinho, Sterling, Stanislas,
    Aguero, Costa

Bench: Pickford, Evans, Barrow, Amat (need to move out these last two from bench ideally by December)

Got to burn a FT and thinking of shipping Sterling. Would you get in:
    A: Cout (already have Firm)
    B: Lallana (ditto)
    C: Redmond
    D: Chadli
    E: Bolasie (already have Lukaku)
Leaning to A but any other option would let me go Coleman to Bellerin next week.

    Giroud match-fit again...

Does anyone see a potential issue (this GW and going forward):
    - Sanchez dropping to the wing, which effectively reduces his points potential
    - Rotation risk for Walcott

It would really suck if he starts playing him as the lone striker up front again - don't see the point of doubling up on Arsenal assets in that case

    Thoughts?

I think it's time to loose the double up rather than getting one more. I'm looking to ship one of Walcott or Sanchez after Sunderland.

      1. LakhaneeFC
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Yup, i think it would have to be Walcott (but after 2-3 GWs ofcourse). He seems to be the biggest rotation risk, and his current involvement in the final third would also reduce drastically.

Sanchez, as mentioned in the other replies, has been giving stupendous returns from the wing over the past couple of years - so i would keep him

        1. Karan14
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

I might loose Sanchez and keep Walcott. Walcott might be a rotation risk but not for atleast the next 2-3 games. But it really all depends on what happens against Sunderland.

Yup, wait and watch looks like the way to go.

Losing Sanchez does free up a lot of money, but i personally think it's risky

Giroud is a good striker, I think he gets the best out of ozil from an assist point of view

The impact will be on sanchez but as most of his points from previous seasons have been from the wing I can't say it will be that bigger impact

      1. LakhaneeFC
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Nothing against Giroud, but i think he stymies the 'Wengerball' that Arsenal seem to have figured out at this time. I agree, might have to consider getting Ozil if Giroud starts playing regularly.

Point is, Walcott would definitely go from 'all season starter' in FPL to being replaced by Ozil once Giroud starts

    4. Ziegler1988
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

Sanchez's stats and point returns from first 9 GWs of last season on the wing are better than this season up front.
Theo is always a rotation risk, if he keeps performing he'll stay in the team unless Wenger wants to rest him for Champions League

      1. Ziegler1988
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Although Giroud as the lone striker does tend to be better for Ozil and worse for Sanchez

      2. LakhaneeFC
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

I might be wrong, but doesn't Sanchez on the wings also lead to bursts of points followed by quiet periods (as opposed to him being in the points every match, more or less, now)?

I agree Theo is always a risk, but from an FPL perspective, this definitely reduces his point potential no?

        1. Ziegler1988
          • 10 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

That's generally been his style this season too. I'd say Giroud probably reduces Theo's points since he won't have as much space to cut in and occupy central areas. But he played pretty well alongside Giroud 2012/13 season

Hmm, makes sense i guess. So wait a couple of GWs and then ship Walcott off for another Liverpool mid (if i can still afford them)

Btw, between Sanchez and Walcott - who would you captain this week?

Just as well your opinion not important.
The Robot is outperforming the polls. The result are available on the site.

When choosing a captain other considerations need to be taken into account such as percentage of other managers captaining that player. Someone with a good rank might want to maintain status quo bupy picking popular option, others might want lukaku to teupy and catch up.

    Whats more of a priority?

    Baines to Pieters seems sensible.

Or upgrade one of Puncheon/Capoue to someone better ? Capoue vs Hull could suffice for one more week right?

I think your defence and goalies are too expensive. You don't need 5 good defenders because you won't often play them all.

All it takes is a random goal, against play even and that's your captain points gone unless he scores or assists a goal.

Problem with picking options like Deeeney is that although they are good option, it exposes you to much more risk if a far more popular pick scores big.
        Kind of raises the stakes

Between him or Mané this week. Leaning towards the latter due to ceiling but Holebas against a toothless Hull (who have now lost Snoddy!) + His attacking threat makes him a brilliant option imho.

Yes Sanchez has security of being nailed and can very well play on the wing too. But Wally won't loose place his place just yet I think he has 2-3 games.

Yes, but Wally is likely to be subbed early if Giroud is fit. Fair to expect 65-70th minute sub.

    2ft, 0.5 in the bank

    Heaton, Pickford
    Valencia, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Mane, Sterling, Walcott, *Snodgrass*, Fletcher
    Aguero, Ibra, Lukaku

Was going to just do Amat to Francis this week, captain Ibra and then next week do Ibra to Austin and upgrade Snodgrass but since he's now injured:

    A. Continue with plan and play 433 this week benching Snodgrass. Francis still has a good fixture (mid)
    B. Do Ibra to Austin this week and upgrade Snodgrass to Firmino/Coutinho
    C. Get someone in for Snodgrass this week up to 6.1m

i would go with A - you've got a good team in my opinion

Personally, i think Ibra is an amazing differential to have this week (assuming you captain him) - especially given the fixture and his overall stats.

I would keep a lookout on City pressers for news on Kun - rotation is a real problem for him, especially considering Guardiola's lack of love for out and out strikers

Liverpool triple up (firmino, coutinho, mane)

    Hi all,

I have done some research into if this method is actually a profitable technique in fpl. I have taken the scores of my 3 highest value midfielders over the the 1st 9 gameweek and compared with the Liverpool trio. I am currently sitting 80,000 in OR so I believe this is a good level to base if the theory would be success or failure.

    Actual points: 135
    Liverpool trio: 152

    Conclusion:
These results show if I'd had the Liverpool 3 for the 1st 9 gameweek id be 17 points better off. ( this doesn't take into account points hits to transfer midfielders the gap is even larger) During this period Liverpool have also had a tricky start having to play Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea away, as well as Utd and Leicester at home. As there fixtures easy it is likely they will score more points and potentially widen the gap.

What do you think? Would you ever consider the triple up?

I consider all players on their individual merits, and if it turns out that they all play for the same team then so be it.

This is just an example of backfitting.

As they say in financial circles, past performance is no guarantee of future returns

        • 9 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Yes maybe. But I think I've had quite a good season overall but would still be 25- 30 points better off if I had done this. That's quite a substantial ranking jump.

Also, I don't see these 3 players output reducing. They've had a relatively tough period of fixtures and performed well and can only see them improving on this if not maintaining it. And with no European commitments will all be fresh each gameweek, which will affect other options.

No, risks with match cancellations, bap cannibalising, money tied up (all 3 expensive).

You'd be very lucky if a match was postponed last minute.

Bonus- yes it limits your chances but does give you a great chance of picking up bonus for at least one of your 3. How often do you get 3 bonus for each of your midfielders? I'd usually be happy with one of them achieving this. Over these tough fixtures the 3 have picked up 18 bonus points.

Money- maybe expensive but for my own team. The alternative 3 have actually been more expensive. (Sanchez Firmino Walcott)
