The Stock Check – Gameweek 10 – Sunday

A Belgian duo light up Sunday’s pair of fixtures as Romelu Lukaku grabs his customary goal against West Ham, before Eden Hazard nets for the third successive Gameweek as Chelsea see off Southampton at St Mary’s.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
There is no doubt that Chelsea’s move to 3-4-3 has handed Hazard the freedom to flourish.

Afforded licence to drift centrally when the Blues are in possession, the revived Belgian scored for the third consecutive league outing, bagging a goal and an assist in the 2-0 triumph.

After peaking at 10.3 in Gameweek 5, he has dropped to 9.8 in recent weeks, yet an explosive return to form – having notched against Leicester City and Manchester United – could now trigger a transfer scramble.

Sunday’s 14-point haul was Hazard’s highest of the season and takes him to just seven points off the top of the FPL midfield standings.

Romelu Lukaku
Second only to Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho for acquisitions ahead of Gameweek 10, Lukaku was also the most-captained player by the top 100 FPL managers.

The Everton striker justified that show of faith with a goal and assist against West Ham and is now the top scoring FPL forward.

His run of consistent displays under Ronald Koeman shows no sign of abating – Lukaku has served up points in six of the last seven Gameweeks ahead of next weekend’s trip to Chelsea.

Diego Costa
A superb second-half strike at St Mary’s maintained a remarkable run that has harvested FPL points in eight of Costa’s first 10 Gameweeks.

Yet again he kept out of trouble and remains on four yellows – impressively, Costa has been booked in just one of the last six league matches.

Although there’s been a recent clamour for 3-5-2 due to the number of high-scoring midfielders, the Costa, Lukaku and Sergio Aguero front line is becoming increasingly appealing for those prepared to invest big funds up top.

In saying that, Hazard is now only one point behind Costa and 0.5 cheaper.

Yannick Bolasie
After finding the net against Burnley in Gameweek 10, Bolasie is another player to shed his erratic form under Koeman.

An assist for Lukaku’s opener means he has now produced points in five of the previous seven Gameweeks.

Arguably the only guaranteed starter in the Everton attacking midfield three, his assist was the fourth of the season – already bettering last term’s tally of three while at Palace.

For those already holding Lukaku, though, Everton’s upcoming schedule – which hands them encounters with Chelsea, Southampton and Manchester United in the next four – may well deter a double-up.

Victor Moses
Handed a fourth straight start as a right wing-back by Antonio Conte, the Chelsea midfielder provided the assist for Hazard’s opener.

Moses was also amongst the goals in the Gameweek 8 win over Leicester City and seems to have cemented a regular role in the Blues’ 3-4-3 formation.

Priced at just 5.5 in FPL, the Nigerian international offered a decent goal threat throughout Sunday’s clash and, having convinced Conte of his worth, may yet emerge as a viable budget midfield option.

Cesar Azpilicueta & Marcos Alonso
It’s four clean sheets in as many matches for the Blues since the change of tactics.

Again, the Spanish defender’s suitability to the bonus points system prevailed and helped him to a pair of additional points at St Mary’s.

Impressively, Azpilicueta has been awarded bonus points in six of the first 10 Gameweeks and has collected at least one extra point on the five occasions that his side has registered a shut-out.

Sitting in 11% of FPL sides, he’s now climbed to joint-fourth in the defender rankings, level with Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin on 45 points.

Even so, with John Terry looming as a factor on the bench and Kurt Zouma soon to return from injury, it’s not yet clear if Conte will keep faith with his current back-three in the mid-term. Marcos Alonso, at left wing-back, therefore appears to offer a more secure option.

Ross Barkley
Barkley nudged back onto the radar with a finely taken volley for the Toffees’ second.

Unlike his fellow midfielder Bolasie, this was Barkley’s first attacking returns since Gameweek 2, when he earned an assist away to West Brom.

Having dropped to the bench as recently as Gameweek 8, Barkley is unlikely to clamber ahead of Bolasie for those eyeing up the Everton midfield. A price tag of 7.2 to the former Eagles winger’s 6.0 means that Barkley remains peripheral in our thoughts for now.

In Decline

Phil Jagielka
The Everton skipper went into Sunday’s match as their top scoring defender, having started all nine of the opening fixtures.

Dropped to the bench as Ramiro Funes Mori came in alongside Ashley Williams, Jagielka’s absence coincided with the Toffees’ first clean sheet in six Gameweeks.

Funes Mori earned a single bonus point to return seven points and stake a claim for regular inclusion, though the upcoming schedule hardly appears conducive to clean sheets.

Winston Reid
The West Ham skipper toppled off the Suspension Tightrope after earning his fifth yellow card of the season.

Reid had racked up 29 points in the previous three Gameweeks but now sits out the Gameweek 11 home clash with Stoke.

With Spurs, United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the subsequent four, clean sheets may well be in short supply for Slaven Bilic’s side.

Play Holebas. Always a chance of attacking points and Watford have been solid recently.

      Otherwise C. AoA is useless.

I wouldn't say useless - it rarely gives you significant points advantage, that's true. But in my case it seems quite handy as it helps me with my benching headache.

Still wary of him. 10mil is a lot for someone who goes missing a lot of the time. He looks really involved in play but still isn't as far forward as Costa or Pedro. I'm waiting.

      Plus they have poor fixtures.

This is the 2014/15 Optimal Dead Team Squad. I have ignored 2015/16 because of Leicester's exploits.

    Pantilimon (4.5m, 123)
    Ivanovic (7.0m, 179) – Terry 6.5m, 177) – Clyne (5.0m, 142)
    Hazard (10.0m, 233) – Sanchez (10.5m, 207) – Silva (9.0m, 191) – Sigurdsson (6.0m, 154)
    Aguero(C) (12.0, 216*2) – Kane(V) (5.0m, 191 + 48) – Austin (6.0m, 176)
    Heaton (4.5m, 50) – Bertrand (5.0m, 87) – Bellerin (4.5m, 28) – Boyd (4.5m, 33)

Translate this into 2016/17 now we are a quarter of the way through the season. This indicates:

2 x cheap GK: Heaton / Grant / Pickford etc.
3 x premium defenders: Kosc, Alonso, Walker, Blind etc
2 x cheap defenders: Smith, Gibson, McAuley, Holebas etc
3 x premium midfielders / forwards: Aguero, Costa, Sanchez, De Bruyne, Hazard etc.
1 x medium midfielder / forward: Walcott, Coutinho, Lukaku, etc
4 x cheap midfielder / forward: Allen, Capoue, Redmond, Austin, Chadli etc.

There is a difference this season. The premium midfielders / forwards are more expensive than in prior years. However, to balance that the premium defenders are cheaper. So if you were looking at an ODTS now how about something like:

    Heaton - Grant
    Koscielny - Alonso - Blind - Holebas - Smith
Coutinho - Walcott - De Bruyne - Son - Fletcher
    Lukaku - Costa - Austin

This covers all the big teams (Man C, Man U, Ars, Liv, Che, Eve, Sot, Tot). The absence of Aguero is notable however there is no equivalent of Harry Kane (a cheap forward who scores heavily) so far this season and so you need to ask whether Costa / Hazard / De Bruyne etc are better value. IMO yes because Costa / Hazard have no European football and so should play the overwhelming majority of PL games and be relatively fresh whilst Aguero may be rested / rotated. That should mean their output is close to Aguero despite being £3m+ cheaper in price.

One of the other things to notice is that after 10 games of the season the premium defenders still offer good value despite their higher price than other defenders. The other key area to stress is the lack of European football for Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and a lesser focus on the Europa League by Man U which may serve their players well later in the season.

    So what do you think?

    1. DaveVak
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

I think you have a point, and that this should be hot topic.
      There are 2 keys here:
      - There are quite a lot of mid-price mids offering great value. You can even narrow it down further, stating Liverpool changed the game
      - Lack of clean sheets, making premium defs not that worth the hike from mid defs

      So imo, it should be
      - Goal: Heaton, cheap GK
      - Def: 2 premium, 2 mid, 1 fodder
      - Mid: 1-2 mid, 2-3 mid, 1 low
      - STR: Aguero, or 2 High PR (Lukaku and Costa), 1 Mid

Deeney or Adam are the sum of it. I'm beginning to think this is the year of the 352 with all these 8 mill milfs about averaging 6ppg. May as well play 5 of them and cheapen down the third forward.

If Giroud, starts up front, Iwobi will likely drop out and Sanchez plays LW. I find it very hard to see Ramsey starting ahead of Walcott on the RW.

In an easy home game, he could play both Cazorla and Ramsey. But yes it's a lot more likely it will be Cazorla and one of Coq/Xhaka.

I reckon Sanchez will motly continue up front but Giroud will get a fair bit of game time. Favourable home fixtures and I'd expect Giroud to start.

I think it will be a great tactic for Wenger to start Alexis up front most of the time, then if we are becoming too predictable, chuck on Giroud to change the dimensions of the game.

      Morning

      -8 is probably needed tbf

      Milner >> Coutinho
      Capoue >> 4.3
      Snodgrass >> Redmond
      Bellerin >> Morgan

      Does that work?

    Need some help please...

    Current team is:

    Heaton
    Williams Walker McAuley
    Walcott Sanchez Firmino Son Capoue
    Aguero Costa

    Foster Collins Diomande Amat

    1 FT, 0.2m ITB

What changes should I make for the upcoming GW...?? (I know my defence is terrible but it frees up cash elsewhere)

    Thanks 🙂

Do Azpi or Alonso offer any additional goal/assist threat over the other?

    Team is a mess.
    Foster, Jaku
    Valencia, Evans, Amat, Smith, Collins
    Sanchez, Theo, Son, Capoue, Mane
    Kun, Lukaku, Austin

Saved a transfer to finally get rid of Collins etc, but those injuries make me feel like
Valencia, Theo and Son -> Fuchs, Coutinho and Chadli. Thoughts?

Think it looks okay if you change Valencia and Collins to some premium defenders. Playing this looks good to me:

      Foster
Smith - Valencia replacement - Collins replacement
      Sanchez - Walcott - Son - Mane
      Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

I could try, but I'm out of cash, 0 itb. So it's only one premium, other one needs to be cheapo.

I would get in a good Valencia replacement then this week. Look to change Mane after the international break to Coutinho and then upgrade Collins.

I wouldn't sell Walcott just yet. He is a rotational risk for sure but still not the best time to get rid of him.

I would go for Hazard, Lukaku & Gundagon shipping out Sterling, Antonio & Deeney if you like to take an odd hit. But if I were you, I loved to take that hit considering long term future.

Good on you Rhinos. He will be popular captain for GW11

      Other captain options

Liverpool mid could work out if you can pick the right one.

Austin/Redmond could do well v Hull

Sanchez up against Spurs is tricky as is Lukaku v Chelsea

      Who you looking at?

Barcelona upcoming could pay off. Or he could give a load of players 32 points again all on his own. They's the risks.

To be honest Rhinos, I think it was just you and Ruth who went without Kun. 😉

I respect your commitment to the cause though as I know you've been without him for some time.

Paid off for you during his lean patch, but if he's back to the old Aguero and once again a prime captain candidate for owners each gw, do you think eventually you'll have to get him back in if he goes on a consecutive run of double figure captain hauls for owners?

Or do you think you have enough other solid options to counteract that scenario?

    Grant Pickford
    Kosc Lovren Holebas Smith Amat
    Sanchez Walcott Sterling Snodgrass Capoue
    Aguero Lukaku Deeney

2FT and 0.1 ITB, I'm thinking of doing Walcott & Snodgrass to Firmino and McArthur, any better suggestions? Would like to get Hazard or at least some Chelsea coverage in there but can't seem to find anywhere to free up the funds unless I ditch Sterling but he has some very nice fixtures in the next few weeks

    Thanks guys

What's your reasoning behind McArthur, or is it literally just because he scored this gameweek?

I'd be ditching Kosc and Walcott/Sterling to get a Liverpool mid in

Best option for 5mil that I could see, mainly going to just be a bench fodder tbh and a way of getting rid of Snodgrass. Could look at ditching Kosc with a couple of hars fixtures but I don't see any real replacement for him at this point, any ideas?

          Yes imo.
Ibra and Snoddy will lose you money in range of minimum 0.2 while Rises for Hazard and Austin again 0.2
          That's a 0.4 swing against 4 points.

Payet + Denney to Hazard + Austin

Sad to being goodbye to my little magician Payet but four reasons justify me shipping him now?
    1. Those upcoming fixtures (GW12-15).
    2. WH are looking so so poor overall (his creativity wasted somewhat).
    3. Hazard looking back to his best in new formation.
    4. Funds (switch now with only 0.1 wiggle room, so fear of being priced out if I wait until the int break)

Anyone else in a similar position?

I wanted to keep him for that game also but prob need to move now if I want Haz + Austin. Could wait and get Haz + Gray after internationals (but Austin looks a safer bet).

Cheers, yes the trigger has been pulled. I think it's a safe play to have funds tied up in Haz instead of Payet. If he keeps his consistency great, if he doesnt easy enough to transfer him out for another premium mid.
