Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

Five players plunged from the Suspension Tightrope in Gameweek 11, and there was a big name with big ownership figures among them.

Nobody comes bigger than Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.1), according to the man himself at least, but his fifth booking of the season was a kick in the teeth for the 28.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers who have stuck by him through thin and thinner in recent weeks.

The Swede finally broke his six-match league goal drought with a brace in the 3-0 win at Swansea City, only to pick up the caution that means he will sit out the home clash with Arsenal which follows the current international break.

The subsequent fixtures – West Ham and Spurs at home, Everton away – are a mixed bag, suggesting that many more FPL managers will finally cut their losses on Zlatan, particularly those needing to find the funds to bring the red-hot Eden Hazard (10.1) into their squads.

More than 70,000 managers have already jettisoned Ibrahimovic since the weekend – only Raheem Sterling (8.1) has been ditched by more.

Two popular defenders will also miss Gameweek 12.

The 12.8%-owned Bournemouth man Adam Smith’s (4.8) second consecutive booking tipped him over the disciplinary edge and out of a trip to Stoke. With Arsenal away and Liverpool at The Vitality Stadium to follow, it looks like a good time to be off Bournemouth defenders, however.

Watford’s 9.3%-owned Jose Holebas (4.8) had been precariously balanced on the tightrope for four Gameweeks and finally succumbed during the 6-1 drubbing by Liverpool.

His parting shot prior to a ban for the visit of Leicester was a -2 score, but the 380,000+ managers with Holebas in their squads might want to hold on to him as Watford, who had kept three consecutive clean sheets before the Anfield massacre, go on to face Stoke and Everton at home and West Brom away.

The former Greek international’s fall from grace leaves Diego Costa (10.5) as the longest surviving tightrope treader. He’s now played six straight matches, including an EFL Cup substitute appearance, with the threat of a ban hanging over him.

Gareth Barry (4.6), who made it a seventh consecutive Premier League season with five or more bookings, and Mark Noble (6.2) were the other two tightrope tumblers. The Hammers’ captain has been booked five times domestically in every season back to ’07/08, including a year in The Championship.

And Sunderland midfielder Steven Pienaar’s (4.9) two yellows at Bournemouth also preclude him from Gameweek 12 action.

Joe Allen’s (5.4) stock has been rising since a Gameweek 6 goal against West Brom.

The Stoke midfielder now has 18.2% of FPL managers backing him, but is one yellow away from a ban following a caution in Saturday’s draw at West Ham just as he looks poised to benefit from a strong fixture run into December involving Bournemouth and Burnley at home and Watford away.

Joining him on the tightrope is Sunderland’s Lynden Gooch (4.3).

The duo will find little space on the rope, as there are a number of occupants still teetering: Paul Pogba (8.2); Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8); Danny Rose (5.9); Yohan Cabaye (5.6); Sam Clucas (4.7); Danny Simpson (4.9); Valon Behrami (4.5); Craig Dawson (4.8); Marouane Fellaini (5.8); Robert Huth (5.0); Jan Vertonghen (5.7) and Ryan Shawcross (4.9).

Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko (6.7) is available again after doing his time for violent conduct, while United’s Ander Herrera (6.3), Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (5.0), Middlesbrough’s Gaston Ramirez (5.3), Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic (7.2), West Brom’s James McClean (5.0) and West Ham centre-half Winston Reid (5.0) are also back in contention next time out.

Hull City striker Adama Diomande (4.6) is now two matches into his three-stretch for striking an opponent in the EFL Cup.

The Men In Black
The four penalties awarded in the Gameweek slightly bucked the trend of the 3.3 (now 3.4) average per round of fixtures.

All were converted, by Jermain Defoe (three from three), Charlie Austin (two from two) and a first penalty success for the returning Harry Kane. Christian Benteke made it one from two for Crystal Palace, the Eagles’ first successful penalty from three attempts this season.

Middlesbrough remain the only team not to have been awarded a penalty, and Boro are one of two teams yet to concede a spot-kick. Palace are the other.

Mike Dean delivered a table-topping seventh penalty award of the season, from nine matches in charge. He now leads the averages all on his own at 0.78 penalties per match.

There was no outing for Roger East (0.75 from four) and a blank for Michael Oliver (0.60 from 10) to leave them trailing in Dean’s punishing wake.

Mark Clattenburg (three in seven), Martin Atkinson (two in nine) and Graham Scott (one in 2 two) were the other men pointing to the spot while simultaneously waving away the protests.

A key crux of what moves to plan for the next 2-3 weeks, how do we think City v Chelsea will go?

Fairly happy to have Aguero and Hazard, but what of Chelsea defence? Bench?

For me, the question is whether to ditch Aguero for Costa for this game, or wait until gw15. Leaning towards ditching sooner, but this might be the one where Costa grabs that fifth yellow.

    WC - suggestions?

    A:

    Heaton, Jaku
    Azpi, Mustafi, Friend, Amat, Kingsley
    Mane, Ozil, Hazard, Gundogan,
    Lukaku, Costa, Vokes

B: Aguero and Pedro instead of Costa and Haz

C: Downgrade defense to get Haz and Aguero.

    D: other ideas?

    Thank you for your feedback!

      Pick over Jaku.
      Snoody/Allen over Gundogan.
      Amat to Nyom.
      Mane to Cout.
      Ozil to Walcott.
      Lukaku to Aguero/Kane.
      Vokes to Austin.

        Thanks!

Couple of those I agree with - Pick and Nyom.
Walcott, yeah, if he is staying fresh. That would also allow an upgrade up front. Nice one.
Austin, if money is there too.

I got a good feeling about Mane though, but then there is the African Cup.
        Kane...hmm....pens too.

A lot to chew on here.

      C. drop Lukaku and Mane and Mustafi imo -- invest in Aguero. Gundogan won't be getting points just like KDB or Sterling.

i don't like Jaku and Amat-Kingsley combo also. They're disaster to happen. Easily in few weeks time none of them will play a minute.

        Thanks!
Gundogan gives City cover for a low price - the alternative to me is someone like Snoddy.
KDB and Sterling are much more pricey.

Mustafi I reckon will start scoring goals from set-pieces.

Lukaku to Kane is something yeah. Agreed.
I also don't fancy SWA backline, but money is tight.

I know money is tight , I have Amat myself, but 2 Swansea defenders it is too much imo. You would pray none of your defenders wasn't injured or suspended.

Gundogan is hardly KDB-Sterling cover. He is rarely involved in shots . You may count on assists - like Matic. I would prefer Matic as he is cheaper or Moses.

Yes, I need to shift a Swan defender.

No, Gundogan isn't cover for those two - having a decent Arsenal midfielder instead is 🙂

With the amount of good midfielders, a top striker is essential to me. Aguero or Costa, perhaps Kane or Lukaku.
Also, in midfield it is more about having cover from Chelsea, City, Liverpool and Arsenal than the exact player.

      This "year"?

      No one yet

      Essential players are guaranteed point-getters

But everyone has had a dry spell

Even Heaton only got 2 points last week

(After getting 5 while getting beaten 3-1 the other week)

He cost 4.5m and is highest scoring keeper. 2nd place costs 1m more.

          Yeah I've got him

He is not essential. Without that 11 pointer he is slightly above par to the rest and let's be honest, that 11 point return won't happen again anytime soon.

You reckon? Did you play FPL the season Heaton scored 150 pts? He kept 10 CS that season and saved 2 penalties. So far he's only kept 3 CS. More to come.

You can't say that 11 pointer won't happen again. He has a 10 pointer as well.

@4.5m starting price I bet he scores close to 150 pts again. That's more than any other 4.5m player in the game and probably more than most 6.5/7m players.

One of the best value players in the game.

I disagree with Jackyboy in discounting the 11 pointer -- Heaton got it fair and square

My definition of essential in a game where the person with the highest number of points is the winner =

You can't win the game without them.

Don't believe that's true for any player -- yet -- which is why I did the annoying quotes on this "year" in my original post

For the record, I think Hazard and Coutinho will be essential if their form continues as is

We definitely need a new term other than essential because it's rare anyone actually is essential.

Heaton looks like a very good bet though
Coutinho is getting an assist or goal every 75 minutes and has fantastic fixtures. Given his price he's probably the most essential player right now
Alonso+Hazard+Costa also great buys but not sure I'd tag them with essential

long tern the midfield is a real issue - Gundogan, Capoue and Bolasie are a very weak three. I'm not quite sure where the money has gone, but that needs to be fixed. Tbh, I would see Firmino, Hazard and Austin outscoring Aguero, Capoue and Bolasie. I wonder if Aguero out might be a means to fix some issues.

    Foster (Pickford)

    Mustafi, Evans, Holebas*, Smith*, Amat*

    Haz, mane, cout, lallana (Fletcher)

    Kun Kaku, Austin

    What's the best move?

    (A) Play AOA, which means five man midfield with fletcher, no hit
    (B) -4 to do smith to anyone at 5.9 or under (if so, who?)
    (C) -8 to do smith to Alonso and Fletcher to De Roon

    Early Sanchez replacement thoughts:

If he's out for just one gameweek, and you got him early: maybe he's worth holding onto. If he's out for more than that, he ties up too much money that can be spent elsewhere, imo.

If he's out for more than that, who to get?

Hazard: Probably the most popular choice. Fantastic form. But for some (like myself), he is already in the team, because we kneejerked him in after the weekend's display.

De Bruyne: Similar price. Early season he showed fantastic form, is he back? In 10.1 % of the teams, could be a differential?

Coutinho/Firmino: what hasn't already been said about the Liverpool duo?

Walcott/Özil: Worth keeping some Arsenal "cover" for when their fixtures turn greener than ever over Christmas, or is that thinking too far ahead?

With the Liverpool/Arsenal choices, you also get the added bonus of freeing up funds to maybe do something like Benteke -> Kane or similar.

Apologies for the long and not very informative post. I assume others may have similar thoughts, would love to get some input on this.

TL;DR: Sanchez out? For whom (if you have Hazard already)?

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

I got him for 10.9, so I can afford one drop and re-evaluate. The problem is I reshuffled my team to accommodate both him and Hazard, and the only way to do it without taking a gajillion hits was to go 3-5-2.

That means I now have Barrow as my 8th attacker instead of Allen. The latter would mean I could comfortably bench Sanchez if he's out short-term. But there's no way I'm going to play Barrow...

      1. Blame It On Rio-ddermorten
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

I can also afford one price drop, but my tactic was to downgrade in defense (and get Austin for Defoe (yeah, that worked well)) instead of going 3-5-2. My midfield is Hazard Sanchez Firmino Allen Capoue, with Aguero Lukaku Austin up front. In defense I kept Koscielny because I got him early, but got rid of Fuchs after one gw to afford Sterling -> Hazard.

        1. Pierce34
          • 8 Years
          7 years, 5 months ago

I've got Aguero and Costa up front (and there's no way I'm getting rid of either at the moment), so downgrading my defence would mean I end up with a bunch of 4.5ers, when I should be trying to get a Chelsea defender in.

Of course, hindsight is great - what I should've done is waited for the international break, and just use the free transfer for Sanchez to Hazard.

Well, I guess you (like myself) already got at least half a million in price rise out of it? I think for me Koscielny is keeping the spot warm for a Chelsea defender atm.

Same, I guess the hit I have to take will feel better knowing I at least made some money that will come in handy later.

Yes, I was unfortunately too slow to catch his first rise, but now I'm fully aboard the Hazard money train!

And as someone on here mentioned, this is the season of hits - with all these great options getting hauls, it's better to get 15 (-4) than to get 8 points from someone you're afraid to get rid of.

      Has to be Walcott/Ozil.

Look at Arsenal fixture's from now:

And that's before their fixtures REALLY turn green in December! I guess the question of Walcott vs Özil is explosiveness vs consistency.

Liverpool's scoring a lot more goals, though.

Their fixtures are excellent until the end of January and Palace was the last December fix if I wasn't wrong.

Ozil vs Walcott is the exact dilemma and I'd likely prefer Walcott if Sanchez is gone for more than a month. However, Ozil is the better choice if Sanchez is out for a shorter time to have the audacity to have Double Arsenal while it stays a differential I hope.

Sanchez back for someone else I meant. Arsenal always hits top form in December so won't surprised seeing them go top by December like the last few seasons. So could have the luxury to afford two Arsenal at that period.

Think Ozil will be gold without Sanchez and Walcott would get more gametime but can't say much on his performance as never really got to see Walcott starting while Sanchez not starting as Walcott's pretty much was injured most of the time since Sanchez joined.

The conclusion so far is: the jury's still out. A lot of great options means a hard decision. But, and this is where my newly invented word gets it's second go: that's what makes this game so funstrating!

      Good luck to you all.

ideas of defence improvement in the next couple of gw (0 ft)?

    foster/pickford

    mcauley mustafi coleman alonso amat

0.1 itb... not likely to get any money extra from mid (hazard, coutinho, redmond, gundogan, de roon) or forwards (aguero, costa, lukaku) any time soon..

Have 2 FTs. If Alexis is injured, then

Alexis and Smith => Hazard and Alonso is a no brainer?

    Currently:
    Alexis/Walcott/Firmino/Coutinho/Capoue
    Kun/Lukaku/Austin

Haha I literally just looked at that move. Either that or just Sanchez to KDB and go with 2 DF's for the GW

I like this actually instead of mine if you have AOA still

The more I look at possible exit routes for Defoe, the more I want to keep him.

Nailed on through the Xmas rotation that a lot may suffer from, on penalties, scoring every other game. Even amongst similar priced midfielders (going 352), can't spot a better option.

Have Austin, and would only really be looking to upgrade rather than a sideways/downgrade to Wilson/Bony/Benteke etc

I think Kane looks like a great option next few weeks. Captain in 14, 16, 17 so would be looking to get him in as 2nd forward

Who to play this week - Pickford or Grant ?
Can I buy Valdes or Boruc to save some money on Heaton ? Will they deliver ?

    Cheers !

      Pickford. Probably not

    Based on previous feedback.
    Where are we now? Decent?

    Heaton, Pick
    Azpi, Mustafi, Friend, Nyom, Kingsley
    Mane, Wally, Hazard, Gundogan, Can
    Kane, Costa, Austin

Could get Aguero, but then both Costa and Kane have to go and I am looking at a 352 with him and Austin up front.

Looks good. I would prefer Snodgrass/Allen over Gundogan

Yeah, but no City cover at all is not so tempting for me.
Gundogan has been scoring 4 goals the last 3 games.

You don't need City "cover". Gundogan isn't going to "cover" Aguero, KDB's, Sterlings points

            Disagree with your logic. 🙂

Haz, Wally, Mane is possible because I got a cheaper city midfielder, which I think is better than none.
KDB or Sterling isn't value compared to the alternatives from other good teams imo.

I said I'd rather have Snodgrass/Allen over Gundogan. I wouldn't have KDB or Sterling either. Just saying you don't need City "cover" in the form of Gundogan

                Fair enough.
I saw he had 4 goals in the last 3 games and thought it was worth a shot.
But I see the point about Allen/Snoddy.
