Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Spurs have to settle for a possible Europa League spot while Leicester City win their group with a match to spare on a night of contrasting fortunes for Premier League clubs. Here’s how Matchday 5 of this season’s Champions League campaign played out.

Monaco 2 Spurs 1

It’s a fair indication of a Champions League campaign gone awry when a team’s best player is their goalkeeper.

And so it has proved for Spurs, who yet again had Hugo Lloris (5.5) to thank for delaying their elimination from a competition they have looked ill-suited to this season.

The French international saved a penalty and pulled off a string of superb saves in Monaco, but even he could not stop his side’s Champions League exit with a match still to play.

Lloris was badly let down by a makeshift defence that allowed their hosts 11 shots on target.

Mauricio Pochettino rested the Fantasy Premier League’s most-owned defender, Kyle Walker (6.1), with Kieran Trippier (4.8) replacing him. But it was the impending domestic ban for Danny Rose (5.9) that caused most of the problems.

With Jan Vertonghen (5.7) likely to deputise for Rose in Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, Pochettino decided not to risk the Belgian. Instead, he opted for Eric Dier (5.1) and Kevin Wimmer (4.6) as his centre halves and the improvised back four played like strangers for much of the night.

Harry Winks (4.5) kept his place after scoring in the 3-2 win over West Ham, while Dele Alli (8.1) and Heung-min Son (7.3) returned to the starting XI and the pair combined for Tottenham’s best chance of the night early on.

Kane (10.8) scored on the night – his fifth goal in his last four outings in all competitions, again converting from the penalty spot this time after Alli had been fouled.

The goal came just three minutes after Monaco had taken a deserved lead and, following Kane’s equaliser, the hosts’ winner then arrived a mere 38 seconds later – a fitting demonstration of Tottenham’s defensive shortcomings.

Spurs will now likely drop into the Europa League if they can seal third place in their group with a draw in their final encounter with CSKA Moscow.

Significantly, Pochettino was in a philosphical mood at the exit and the prospects of a Europa League campaign…

“Maybe after five games we do not show enough quality to share two tough competitions in the Premier League and Champions League…It is good for the club to go into the Europa League and try to go further in the competition. I think it’ll be good.”

Last night’s events, while issuing a warning on Spurs’ current form and confidence, will be welcomed by those Fantasy eyeing up Kane and his team-mates.

There’s no question that a continued Champions League campaign would have impacted on the prospects of Kane and certainly full-backs Walker and Rose. Pochettino would now seem likely to prioritise the Premier League campaign, hopefully keeping the rotation of his key assets to a minimum.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Wimmer, Rose, Wanyama, Dembélé (Eriksen 64), Alli, Winks (Sissoko 74), Son (Janssen 64), Kane.
Subs not used: Vorm, Walker, Vertonghen, Nkoudou.

Leicester City 2 Club Brugge 1

While Spurs were drowning on the Mediterranean coast, things continued to go swimmingly in land-locked Leicester.

First-half goals from Shinji Okazaki (5.7) and a Riyad Mahrez (9.0) penalty won the Foxes the group as Claudio Ranieri’s charges continued to exceed all expectations in Europe.

The Italian made just one change to the side that lost at Watford. Midfielder Andy King (4.8) came in for Daniel Amartey (4.5) as Islam Slimani (8.3) recovered from a groin problem to keep his place.

That continuity helped Leicester dominate from the get-go. Christian Fuchs (5.4) provided the cross for the opener and Marc Albrighton (5.0) was fouled for the penalty as Leicester outclassed their winless opponents.

It was rather different after the break.

The Foxes conceded for the first time in Europe this season as the visitors finally showed some spirit and at 2-1, there were some nervy moments for the hosts’ defence to overcome.

But Leicester missed good chances to seal the deal on the break and can now finally concentrate on the league – for all the right reasons – until well into the New Year, as Ranieri was keen to stress post-match.

“In the Premier League, we are very close to the relegation and we must play at the same level as the Champions League because when we want to do something we achieve something. We must concentrate on the Premier League now.”

Leicester City XI: Zieler, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Schlupp 68), Drinkwater, King, Albrighton (Amartey 78), Vardy, Okazaki (Gray 68).
Subs: Hamer, Hernández, Musa,Ulloa.

Chelsea defence more essential than spurs defence now??

I'm not sure whether to replace vertonghen with Alonso or upgrade another defender spot (eg I got Williams)

What has happened to Ighalo. His mins per attempt is actually low than Defoe's yet he's scored once and dropped .4 in value subsequently.

Is he just lacking confidence or has a change in style by Watford affected him?

A combination of having a one off season that he will never come close to matching, and the fact he's lacking confidence this year.

Interesting to see if he has a revival. I'm loathe to pay 7.5 for Defoe when I should've got him for 7.0.

To be honest, Ighalo has been poor since the start of this year, let alone this season. Confidence as you say may be one issue, and he can maybe sometimes be a bit one dimensional, with his scoop trick well and truly known now.

To make matters worse, Mazzarri now seems to be moving to a 3-4-3 at this moment, rather than a 3-5-2 or the 4-4-2 we saw last season. With only one centre forward position, this will likely go to Deeney and is further compounded by the fact that Okaka is now fit and probably is ahead of Ighalo in the pecking order for the centre forward berth.

I am also hugely hugely excited for the return of Issac Success, who should be coming back from injury in the coming weeks, and could be primed for a breakout come GW 17, when Watford's fixtures pick up again. He is an exciting player who should fit the 3-4-3 well and could light up the league if gets a chance ahead of Amrabat and stays fit whilst improving his finishing.

All of this, I am afraid, makes me fear for the immediate future of Odion Ighalo.

Success like to emerge as an FPL asset do you think?

I think he is an outstanding young player. He is raw, but very fast and strong and plays in a very direct manner, and if he gets a run in the team I believe people will pay the extra 0.5 or so to get him in over Capoue.

In his one start against Boro, he gave Barragan a torrid time, and he should have got him sent off. He was clearly nervous in this game, and misplaced many passes, but hopefully if he gets a consistent run he can settle.

His finishing was not the greatest at Granada, but with an unselfish hard working player like Deeney, Success could very much be the Hazard to Deeney's Costa, and have many opportunities.

His thigh injury does concern me though as he is another one who has been sent to Dr Ramon Cugat of Barcelona, as his seemingly innocuous knock against Bournemouth (in which he scored a great header which he is not known for), worsened and required some form of percutaneous drainage due to fluid accumulation. As a doctor, I find this injury a tad strange, but signs are he should be back this week or the next.

Sorry for the long response, but in summary I am very very excited for his return and think he could help Watford push for a top half finish if he can maintain his fitness and perform consistently.

Who should i get rid first?

    a) Antonio (poor fixtures)
    b) Lukaku (better options elsewhere)
    c) Smith (poor fixtures)

    Current team:
    Heaton
    McAuley, Brunt, Clyne
    Capoue, Firm, Cout, Haz
    Kun, Lukaku, Austin
    (Pickford, Antonio, Smith, Amat)

Opinions on my team please? Don’t think it’s too bad but I not getting anywhere gone backwards more than anything starting to get worried. Have 1FT and 0.1m ITB.

    Grant // Pickford

    Vertonghen // Morgan // Koscielny // Martina // Amat

    Hazard // Sánchez // Coutinho // Allen // Meyler

    Costa // Agüero // Austin

Getting 11 out is the main issue this week thinking of doing:-

    Allen ->> Philips

Tempted to go 3-5-2 by doing - Aguero, Lukaku, Matic > Kane, Defoe, Siggy.

    This would leave me with:

    Heaton, Jaku
    Cedric, Morgan, Evans, Lovren, Amat
    Coutinho, Firminho, Hazard, Walcott, Siggy
    Kane, Defoe, Austin

Any other way of getting in Kane bearing in mind I want to remove Lukaku (£0.1m ITB)?

        should i do:

He seems pretty nailed on, given he has played the last 7 and WBA are have more or less a fully fit squad at present.

                I'm considering him.

I would potentially be a bit reticent about Nyom at this moment.

Matty Phillips and Morrison played very well against Burnley, and with Chadli to come back, this could potentially result in Pulis selecting Brunt over Nyom at fullback, to accommodate the aforementioned midfield three.

Speculation at this point of course, but food for thought.

He may be as nailed as Kingsley, really. Looks like Bradley still trying to figure out his best 11. Amat returned and played 90 minutes afters sitting out 3 in a row.

My point is that Kingsley soon may be a part of the newfound starting 11, if Bradley finds it. And I would wait on Nyom before we see a WBA line up with all player available.

I think I'm getting Nyom. For that price its hard to get guarantees. The only other option is Djilobodji although Sunderland aren't too good defensively.

Registered as a member two days ago, and now i´ve had the time to look at the different stats tables offered. What caught my mind is the optimism for Kun. And with so many members and proved players eying to get rid, I´m starting to wonder what these stats are based on? Is Kun topping the points projected tables solely because of previous seasons?

No, I think it is based on the number of chances he gets in the box, and his goal conversion rate, plus being on pens. It also takes into account the stats of the defenses he'll be up against. I think that is more or less how the projections work.

Thanks, I see. With those numbers I find it strange, as I said, that proved players with those stats available are considering to get rid. Better options out there, I guess.

What in your opinion is the best replacement for Williams: Brunt or Cedric?

Right now my defence is Alonso-Williams-Evans (Kone, Amat)

Brunt - playing OOP, huge attacking threat. But it would be double WBA for me and we still dont know how Chadli is going to impact Brunts position/minutes.

Cedric - playing for a better team. And looks like he has some attacking in him too.

Both WBA and Saints have nice fixtures in near future.

I'm leaning towards Cedric only becouse I already have Evans. If i didn't, the decision would be even tougher.

I am doing the same move this week. Williams --> Cedric. I also have Evans, and want to spread the risk. Great fixtures for both. Soton may keep a couple of CS now with an in form van Dijk, and Cedric may get attacking returns as well.

Unsure about some of these moves. We are getting close to the busy xmas period, and I would start signing som nailed on players with less risk of rotation. Nyom & Anichebe is risky, and would certainly not go Defoe --> Anichebe. Defoe more expensive, but still great value.
