The Stock Check – Gameweek 13 – Sunday

Alexis Sanchez strikes a timely double with Theo Walcott providing an able midfield sidekick as Arsenal see off Bournemouth. Meanwhile, the Saints’ Charlie Austin’s ascent as a mid-price frontman is proving hard to ignore, as another blank from Everton’s Romelu Lukaku sees his transfer exodus pick up pace. Here’s the Stock Check from Sunday’s quartet of matches.

On the Rise

Alexis Sanchez
The Chilean followed Sergio Aguero’s lead by bagging a brace as Arsenal got the better of Bournemouth at the Emirates.

Doubts had been mounting over Sanchez’ value for money – he’d blanked in five of the previous six and had scored just once at home prior to Sunday’s performance.

With Olivier Giroud back on the bench, though, Sanchez was deployed as the central striker once again and served a timely reminder of his armband potential by producing a fifth double-figure haul of the season.

In a weekend when Kevin De Bruyne was benched for City’s trip to Burnley and Philippe Coutinho’s ankle injury potentially sparking a major exodus, Sanchez’ appeal has clearly been boosted by recent events.

Theo Walcott
Utilised as a sub against PSG in midweek, Walcott was reinstalled to Arsene Wenger’s first XI for the Cherries’ encounter.

The wide man has how started 12 of the opening 13 league fixtures – only missing the Gameweek 10 trip to Sunderland with a minor injury.

Today’s haul takes him onto 71 points – that’s fifth amongst midfielders and just two behind Roberto Firmino.

Having managed just two 10+ points hauls, Walcott may lack Sanchez’ explosive appeal, yet, at a price of 7.8, he continues to offer excellent value for money in the mid-price bracket.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
After netting twice at Swansea in Gameweek 11, the big Swede took his tally to three goals in his last two as he hints at a step up in consistency.

Indeed, this was the first time Ibrahimovic has scored in back-to-back top-flight appearances since Gameweek 2, having missed last week’s clash with Arsenal due to suspension.

After a series of inconsistent displays, it’ll take more than today’s goal to convince many to reconsider Ibrahimovic, yet with some fine fixtures to follow, he’s likely to remain United’s chief attacking force over the festive period.

Charlie Austin
The Southampton forward took his tally to six goals in nine Gameweeks by netting a quick-fire winner against Everton earlier this afternoon.

Despite being devoid of both Dusan Tadic and Sofiane Boufal, Claude Puel was once again able to rely on Austin to carry the Saints’ main threat – he has now been involved in 77.8% of his side’s goals when on the pitch.

Having started each of the last eight, any concerns over Austin’s minutes look unfounded. With clashes against Palace, Middlesbrough, Stoke and Bournemouth in the next four, he looks well set to keep on delivering value for money at just 6.8.

Cedric Soares
Southampton’s right-back continues to look like a lucky charm for Puel.

A 1-0 win over Everton means that the Saints have chalked up a clean sheet in each of the last five league matches that Cedric has started.

Priced at just 4.9, he’s the cheapest route into the St Mary’s rearguard and underlined his value for money by also chipping in with two bonus points today.

Having also kept out Liverpool last week, Southampton’s defence looks ripe for investment right now, with Puel’s outfit set for some excellent upcoming fixtures to augment their appeal.

Dimitri Payet
The Frenchman’s cross for Diafra Sakho’s opener at Old Trafford means he now has six assists in 11 appearances.

Considering he managed a total of 13 assists last season, Payet’s upturn in creative output is worth monitoring. Indeed, he has now provided 11 key passes more than any player over the first 13 Gameweeks.

Granted, West Ham’s next two matches – against Arsenal and Liverpool – may persuade many to overlook him for now.

Nonetheless, the schedule from Gameweek 16 onwards, which kick starts with back-to-back home clashes against Burnley and Hull, could see that 9.7% FPL ownership climb sooner rather than later.

In Decline

Romelu Lukaku
It’s one goal in the last five fixtures now for the Everton frontman, who is already the most transferred out forward in the Gameweek by some margin.

Even the underlying numbers afford little optimism – a single off-target free-kick was all Lukaku had to offer today as the Toffees’ slide down the table continues.

With clashes against United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next four, the big Belgian seems set for a significant exodus as the schedule turns against Ronald Koeman’s side.

Olivier Giroud
Despite netting for the fifth time in as many appearances with a strike against PSG, the Frenchman remains unable to find a way into the Arsenal first XI in the Premier League.

Many expected Giroud to start up after he led the line in midweek but he was again utilised off the bench and has yet to start a league match this season.

Granted, he supplied a late assist to vindicate the 50,000+ transfers in last week but with Sanchez and Walcott grabbing the goals, Giroud remains no more than a Plan B.

Wenger’s post-match confirmation that Giroud picked up a hamstring problem and is set to be assessed merely strengthens the idea that Sanchez will remain the central striker for next week’s trip to West Ham.

Carl Jenkinson
We’d expected the Arsenal right-back to offer a decent short-term option in the absence of Hector Bellerin but, having started against PSG in midweek, Jenkinson was omitted from the squad altogether this afternoon.

Wenger was made to rue his decision to start Mathieu Debuchy when the Frenchman limped off within 20 minutes due to a hamstring injury, with Gabriel his replacement. Jenkinson may well be handed a reprieve for next week’s clash with the Hammers but with Bellerin expected back in mid-December, the former looks best avoided.

Wilfried Bony, Bojan
Bony and Bojan were marked as the fall guys for last week’s home loss to Bournemouth as both dropped down to the bench for the Potters’ trip to Watford.

Bony had started nine straight matches since arriving on loan from Man City but with midweek reports suggesting that his parent club could sell the Ivorian over the winter window, Mark Hughes opted to bench him despite switching tactics and opting for two up front.

Bojan’s omission was just as surprising, given that Joe Allen sat out today’s fixture due to suspension. Installed to the starting XI for the first time in seven Gameweeks last weekend, the Spaniard’s immediate demotion is indicative of how far he’s fallen under Hughes this season.

Allen owners, meanwhile, will be optimistic he could return to the role in “the hole” at home to Burnley next weekend after he was shifted to the double-pivot against the Cherries last time out.

Juan Mata
We had hopes that Juan Mata could emerge as a viable option but the Spaniard was hauled off just after the hour-mark against West Ham, suggesting his minutes will continue to be in question. That’s likely a symptom of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s return to the United reckoning which could dent Mata’s pitch time from here on.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Unanimous. Was just worried a bit about rotation with Ramsey back and if Giroud plays up top, Sanchez shifted wide. And would he get time off with new baby!

        Overthinking! Ha

Morning All - This decision doing my head in...
Which pair to get more points (need to draft Kane) ?

    Front 8
    Sanchez Haz Theo XXX Carrick
    Aguero Kane XXX

    A) Siggy + Austin (good fixtures for both)
    B) Firmino + Anichebe (no pool cover which terrifies me)

How do i improbe my team value. It's really low at the moment?

    Also:
    Squad looks like:
    Heaton / Pickford
    Cedric / Kosclieny / Evans / Amat / Holebas
    Hazard / Manè / Siggy / Allen / Capoue
    Costa / Aguero / Allen

    A. Hazard --> Sanchez
    B. Aguero --> Kane
    C. Anything else you suggest

Kosc, Evans, Amat, Allen, Aguero...all players that have limited upward potential in value (though Joe Allen's price is low, with the upcoming fixtures it would make sense to bet against any bandwagons in his favor).

Of course, picking the players who will do well ahead of time really is the name of this game. If I (or anyone else here) had the answers, we'd probably not be putzing about on discussion fora but instead be making bank at the local bookies.

I think you're set to see some increased TV out of Siggy, Mane, Haz and Costa (assuming he avoids the inevitable ban for his 5th yellow for a long enough stretch). Aguero to Kane is risky but you'll definitely get a handy 0.5 or 0.6 over the next 2 GWs out of Kane if he performs according to the fixtures he has. I don't think Haz to Sanchez has the same upside. If your second Allen (striker) is in fact Austin, I think you'll get some value out of him too.

Kosc to a defender with better upside (Kosc having risen from 6 to 6.6 seems like the limit of his potential, price-wise) might be a good move. You've already got Cedric (plenty of potential there) so if for Kosc you could consider Lovren, Clyne, Valencia, Walker, Rose, Azpi or Alonso. For JEvans, a sideways move to McAuley could give you increased potential, though if West Brom manage to keep any more clean sheets you might see JEvans gain value as well.

Allen and Capoue are tougher. Not too many players at that price range with better upside. Perhaps Can over Liverpool's upcoming fixtures. You'd have to imagine that he'll get more license to go forward in Coutinho's absence. Interesting to monitor Sims' minutes. He's not even listed on the RMT page but looked like a decent source of points over Southampton's good fixtures if he gets the minutes. Leicester have good fixtures to go with their awful form, so if they manage a result or two over the next month (which they should be expected to do), Andy King has a good shot at being in the points.

Again, though, I'm no Nostradamus. My FPL career is testament to the fact.

Thanks man. This is such a help and a fasinating read. Last year I finished in the top 100 but then again I had Mahrez from the very first week. This season has been a mixed bag but then again it is still November. I need to hve faith in my team. I might do the aguero --> kane for a -4 as he could run wild against a poor swansea defence.

        Thanks again

Is there a new template midfield
    I'm thinking
    Hazard Sanchez firmino siggurdsson 4.5

I currently have haz firm cout siggs and fletch
    Giroud aguero benteke
It's a choice between Kane and Walcott or Sanchez and Austin for giroud and coutinho

    Anyone with a similar choice

      Yup, this is exactly right
I did Cout for Siggy on Saturday and last night did Aguero to Kane

Leaves me with 4.7M in teh bank and enough flexibility to get Costa in for Anichebe the following week or Mane in for Gun the week after

I would downgrade Aguero for you too just just alot more flexilibility

I find it hard to part ways with aguero but it's been at the back of my mind for a while especially since I haven't been captaining him often

      2. AndyCook
          7 years, 5 months ago

Totally disagree, I had a similar choice - Defoe and Sanchez or Walcott and Kane. Kane has great fixtures but still looks rusty and Walcott could get rotated over Christmas. I chose Defoe and Sanchez. Sanchez is the focal point for Arsenal and their fixtures are great - plus couldn't overlook a player on track to score over 250 points this season.

With Coutinho now injured I now have a full team of:
          Heaton, Pickford
          Walker, Cedric, Holebas, Clyne, Amat
Hazard, Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Firmino, De Roon
          Aguero, Defoe, Austin

I think this is a nice balance.

There is so little consistent value in midfield unless you want to punt on Zaha, Phillips etc. but there is value up top.

Thats the exact midfield I'm aiming for as well but it does mean going without Kane. Personally I believe Sanchez and Austin will do much better than Kane and Walcott so I will be going Kane less until at least GW16.

Bottomed last page ... what are you thoughts?

I always believed that Aguero is the best player in the EPL, and he always gave me massive points in my FPL team for the past seasons. I always have him in my team, always, unless obviously he's injured or suspended for more than one game.

Recently I decided that without him I could have a better team, and since I also had KDB I thought I had cover for City. Also I have a gut feeling that in December KDB will bring in loads of points. Was pretty decided on doing Aguero and Lukaku for Costa/Ibrahimovic and Kane and also keep KDB.

But the fear of not having Aguero when he goes mental was too big. Yes he is frustrating sometimes, but he's the best player in the league, he can easily score a brace as we saw this weekend, and he's on penalties. So I ended up doing KDB and Lukaku for Walcott and Kane.

Good choice? Who knows. Although I admit that I have a feeling KDB will go on a rampage. Time will tell.

I agree with you but Pep cannot just keep keep on the bench to rest him. Now they do not have any Champions League games so he can concentrate on the PL. City with KDB in the side is a much better team.

Even Aguero has the same risk, I expect that he misses one of the games during Xmas.

And I would get more options for the selection of the captain. Then Sanchez, Kane, Hazard, Costa in my team.

Now I have to choose between Hazard/Costa and Agurero every week. Theo is too risky to captain.

Did Cout + Ibra -> Firm + Kane yesterday. One week of Ibra served me well, I cant pass up on Kane having 3 of the next 4 at home. Cout -> Firm doesnt need explanation. Looking to get Cedric in for Williams (no idea whats he doing in my team still).

Team is in a dire state.... Have dropped continuously over the last couple of weeks and most likely needs an overhaul now.

        Heaton/Foster
        Fuchs/Stones/WIlliams/Bardsley/Amat
        Coutinho/Firmino/Allen/Matic/Capoue
        Lukaku/Aguero/Costa
        1FT - 1.2 ITB

With Firmino/Coutinho both a doubt although the latter more so and Bardsley out till possibly the new year, I think I need to rip this apart.
Bit heavy up front I know but just about the only place I'm getting points.

        Thoughts...
        Bardsley > Cedric
        Coutinho > Ozil/Mane/other....

sadly he's not even the worst defensive transfer I've made in recent weeks. I brought Alderweireld in and he got injured in his 2nd game, and then I replaced him with Valencia who didn't even manage to play a game! Both for hits too if I recall correctly.

Fuchs has been a disaster for me too - but aren't you tempted to give him one last chance just for the sake of saving a hit?

vs Sunderland there is a chance of a cleanie surely?

I give Leicester about 0% chance of keeping a cleansheet away to Sunderland. They are dreadful away.

This game is so annoying (/fun). I had a team I was almost happy with:

        Foster Pickford
        Koscielny, Alonso, Holebas, Pieters, Amat
        Hazard, Mane, Coutinho, Sigurdsson, Capoue
        Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

Now I have to ditch Coutinho (injury) and Lukaku (rubbish again). What to do?

        A Lukaku + Coutinho - Kane + 7.0 (Shaqiri/Moses/Chadli/Son) -4
B Lukaku, Coutinho + Koscielny - Kane, Walcott, VVD -8

hey guys. hope you are all doing fine. have not been on here for some time but need your great expertise and help with this lot:

        Pickford (Grant)
        Clyne/Walker/Alonso (Holebas/A. Smith)
        Hazard/Firmino/Walcott/Allen (Capoue)
        Kun/Trollkaku/Austin

        2 FT, 0.5 ITB

1 transfer will be Troll out for Hurrikane.

What you folks suggest as second free transfer?

A] Clyne --> Cedric (have just about the cash for that so need to do it today)
B] Firmino --> Siggy (i can wait a bit with that)

Maybe not something you're keen on... but if you did Kun to Costa now, it would get you primed and ready for GW15 as you would have Costa for their great run, and also have the funds to do Allen to Siggy next week too.

        replacement for coutinho?
a, sigurdsson - good form, good draw but I don't believe him against Spurs
b, delealli - comeback from an injury, likely to assist to kane
c, firmino - without coutinho against a defensive team
d, yaya - dunno. he is brutal enough to liquidate costa

Why is everyone clambering over Kane? Stat's for last two weeks against Lukaku are closer than you think! Same amount of goal attempts, in fact Lukaku has more penalty area touches than Kane! Is it just the fact he's playing the mighty Swans that folks are getting him?
