Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 16

Harry Kane (11.2) may have mustered just a single shot away to Manchester United on Sunday but he’s still set to challenge at the top of our latest Captain Poll.

Chances should certainly be far more plentiful for the Spurs striker when Hull City drop by White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Mike Phelan’s Tigers have conceded 17 goals on the road this campaign, while Kane has scored a brace in his last two home outings.

Teammates Christian Eriksen (8.3) and Dele Alli (8.1) also failed to impress at Old Trafford, but against such a travel-sick side, are surely worthy of armband consideration.

Eriksen, in particular, appeared in fine fettle prior to Sunday’s Old Trafford disappointment, having scored three goals and assisted another in in the two matches prior to the Red Devils defeat.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (11.7) was another disappointment over the weekend, fetching just an assist and 5 points from Arsenal’s 3-1 victory at home to Stoke City.

However, away from home, the 34.8% owned Chilean is a different beast: he’s scored more goals and accrued more shots on target and created more chances for teammates than any other FPL midfielder.

The Chilean looks destined to rival Kane at the summit, particularly with the Gunners facing an Everton defence that has failed to keep a clean sheet over their last five outings, with just a single shutout in their last eleven Gameweeks.

With the hosts in such poor form Mesut Ozil (9.6) and Theo Walcott (7.9) may also gather interest. Both impressed in the Stoke City victory with a goal apiece. Indeed, Walcott registered more shots than any other player over Gameweek 15 although, with Arsene Wenger hinting at rotation, he may yet find himself kept in reserve at Goodison Park.

Given that they host Watford,  Manchester City may also provide a host of strong contenders this Gameweek, despite their 4-2 humbling away to Leicester City on Saturday evening.

However, interest in Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) is set to be muted with the Belgian now without a goal since Gameweek 5. He’s also failed to return an assist in his last three outings following Saturday’s defeat.

Pep Guardiola’s option of fielding Nolito as a false 9 may also force us to overlook the 8% owned Kelechi Iheanacho (6.8), who was hooked after just 57 minutes at the King Power Stadium.

His replacement on Saturday, Yaya Toure (£7.5m), could now present a short-term differential. The Ivorian would seem poised to start and get a run at a Watford defence that is without a clean sheet in their last five Gameweeks, conceding 13 goals.

Question marks remain over the reliability of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.5) away from Stamford Bridge, which may just temper interest in the 38.4% owned Chelsea midfielder ahead of his trip to Sunderland. On the road, he has scored just twice, compared to six goals at home.

In marked contrast, Diego Costa (10.9) has emerged as one of this season’s most reliable performers both home and away.

It would be no surprise to see FPL’s most popular player among the poll’s frontrunners after delivering attacking returns in 13 of his 15 Gameweek starts. Sunderland, meanwhile, have conceded 14 goals at the Stadium of Light, with just one clean sheet from seven matches.

West Ham offer a trio of differential armband options this week due to a home fixture with a Burnley outfit that has shipped 15 goals across their six away trips.

That could garner votes for the 9.4% owned Dimitri Payet (9.1), who has delivered attacking returns in each of his last three Gameweek outings.

Michail Antonio (6.7), is another that may attract attention, as could striker Andy Carroll (6.1).

After impressing off the bench in his last two outings, the 1.6% owned Geordie looks to have done enough to have earn his second start of the season against the Clarets.

No side has scored more than Liverpool’s 37 goals this season, but a visit to a Middlesbrough side, which has conceded just seven goals in as many home fixtures, may force a rethink for those tempted by Reds assets.

Nevertheless, the attacking potency of 20.2% owned Sadio Mane (9.3), who has four assists and a goal over the last three Gameweeks, demands our attention. As does Divock Origi (6.7), who has scored four in four in all competitions.

Swansea City’s visit to West Brom offers further alternative armband options, with backers of Baggies duo Salomon Rondon (6.5) and Matt Phillips (5.4) confident of returns, given the defensive frailties of Bob Bradley’s side on the road.

Away from the Liberty Stadium, the Swans have allowed 15 goals and earned a solitary clean sheet.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

No. Wally could prove to be a season keeper. Antonio is on 4 yellows, could easily get that in the next game. However I am leaning towards Firmino > ant

    Dirst re-post....

I'm almost itching to make a move this week...

    Nacho + Lovren to Carroll + Toby -4 ?

    Would leave me with:

    Heaton
    Alonso - Toby - Brunt
    Sanchez - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Can
    Ibra - Kane - Carroll

    Pickford - Capoue - Holebas - Amat

One risk for another may not be the best option I suppose... 🙂

I can actually do Lovren to Danny Rose for free and I'd absolutely prefer that but I'm worried about Davies now being back, we know they like to rotate full backs

Not sure that's true to be honest.

Toby will play every game over Christmas, Rose will miss at least one and it could be one of the next 2.

Don't take a hit. Your team looks strong this week - I back Nacho to start more than I back Carroll to start. This weekend looks good for the Carroll move.

Tempted by Jones for Lovren....if not then I think Rose will definitely start as Poch will want a reaction.

No offence intended to any Gunners fans on here, but just a general comment about The Arsenal. As a group they must be the biggest moaners in the country....

FGS...they're playing Bayern at the Allianz arena and then again at The Emirates and they get to watch Sanchez and Ozil and co...Football doesn't get any better than that !!

Meanwhile in the real world my Blackburn lads will be playing Burton Albion.

    Want to swap ?

I seriously don't recall any Liverpool or United fans up in this neck of the woods moaning about drawing hard teams in their heydays. I do remember plenty of "we'll stuff 'em" comments and excitement of the fixture.

I honestly think that Arsenal are their own worst enemies sometimes.

It's the potential of what they can achieve which makes us pull our hair out.

The thing is you will never win the Champions league without beating some very classy teams along the way. Arsenal themselves are classy team this year who nobody in Europe will look forward to playing. But they might if they knew that the Arsenal fans were so negative about matches.

Stuff'em...you can beat Bayern...you can beat anybody on your day.

        1. Delhidynamo
          • 9 Years

Haha there's no real winning here Wakey.

As a fanbase you will be mocked for not having belief in your team and you will be mocked for having too much belief in the team.

In our hearts, every Arsenal fan believes we can beat anyone on our day and the team has shown us that. The collective moaning is more of a defense mechanism to show that "we know better"

      2. Ginola14
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

I don't understand the moaning either, surely as elite sportsmen you want to test yourself against the best, that way if you win the pride you feel will be boundless ?

    5. Konstaapeli

I think it's just general frustration for another tough draw from arsenal fans. Gives rivals yet more ammunition if they stuff us as most will be expecting. Same way as ppl relate arsenal as 4th just because we haven't won the title over a decade (have finished above that for 5 years of last 10).

I was hoping for easier opponent but will absolutely relish this.

They need to learn the lesson from Leicester last season. They didn't have any great players (as is being proven)...it was a lie (maybe Kante) all they really had was self belief, enthusiasm and stuff like that...oh and the crowd 100% behind them.

That's all that the missing ingredients are at Arsenal....nothing else.

Playing Cedric and Alonso. Who should join them?

          1) Amat (wba)
          2) McAuley (SWA)
          3) Holebas (mcy)

Currently on 1 as Swans look like they have turned a corner with these "easier" fixtures and have hit some form (he could have scored 2 goals) Between him and 2 with 3 last on the pine regardless of his 2 recent assists.

Been in this situation before. Amat provides the most potential upside but always prefer playing who I think will get most points.

Take Sigurdsson and Llorente out of the equation and you play McAuley every time.

Every time I've gone for the highest points ceiling in these situations it's backfired but it's potentially more exciting 🙂

I don't think it's madness. Especially if the money saved goes in def.

Good chance it pays off over BURN/HULL/swans

I think my defence is amazing though!

I'm having a bad little run and have went to a dark place. Think I will avoid the hit this week.

Would you do it for free? I dont trust WHU and Antonio is on 4 YC. You dont want him getting banned over the festive period.

Could upgrade Williams to Alonso/Azpi. I think Chelsea defensive cover is pretty important now.

For those who didnt see WH's match against Pool ytd, Antonio played as a striker and got a goal whilst Ayew played right wing...expect this to continue...Bilic sees Carroll as an impact player off the bench...not sure about the love for Caroll in here

Didn't Antonio move to wing back once Carroll came on?

Chance that Andy starts one of the next 2 surely?

Yes he did..at one point WH played 5 at the back and Antonio played RB...that was when Carroll entered and WH punted long balls to him and also try to play out for a draw....Ayew and Carroll will spilt the minutes imo...

Got some problems in the team rank these in order of priority

                  Firmino
                  Bolasie inj
                  Austin inj
                  Lovren
                  Williams

I need to starting sort those out today, Williams is scoring me little, not happy with Liverpool defence, firmino blanking, and two injuries two low cost players. What order would you be fixing things?

Took a -8 for Firmino, capoue, Lovren -> siggy, eriksen, Gibson.

                  Team is looking like:

                  Pickford, heaton
                  Holebas,Gibson,McCauley,amat,pieters
                  Eriksen,siggy,Walcott,hazard,Sanchez
                  Anichebe,Kane,costa

I'm pretty happy with it, although the defense is pretty weak! Thoughts?

I'd personally prefer to have fewer of the big hitters and have a better defence. But sacrifices have to be made somewhere! I'm currently hazardless and surviving ok.

So Man City will be satisfied that they came second in their UCL group, while Barca got a tough draw against PSG.

                    Any advise for this lot?
                    Heaton

                    Sanchez/Hazard/Siggy/Phillips/

                    Bench: 4.0/Amat/Pieters/4.3

Already bought in Toby for Lovren with my FT.

Pulis: "We have players waiting desperately to get back in our team like James and Nacer. The XI have worked hard and have done well. We will assess our players tomorrow ahead of the Swansea game. Dawson is suspended so I'm chewing it over. We have options. There's no reason why players can't play three games in a week in my opinion, that's as long as the preparation is right."
