The Digest – Gameweek 15

We close on Gameweek 15 with our usual three-part summary, assessing a maverick talent delivering unerring consistency, the ailing champions revived to prompt a rethink and the brutal approach to stalling heavy-hitters.

The Player

Wilfried Zaha is a player often admired and therefore pimped on these pages – he’s factored in our Spot the Differential article on five occasions in just over year.

However, never has the winger rewarded that faith with the kind of form he’s currently displaying.

I regret not fighting harder for his Scout Picks inclusion ahead of his 16-point haul but, given his consistency this season, it appears we will have other opportunities.

Always capable of impressing in bursts, this new version of Zaha has produced two goals and seven assists in the last seven Gameweeks. That’s an astonishing rate of return for a mid-price asset and an output that puts the likes of Kevin De Bruyne to shame by comparison.

It’s difficult to pinpoint what is behind such an improvement.

Zaha is receiving the same number of passes as last season, attempting the same number of dribbles; he’s even creating chances at almost the same rate.

However, with Christian Benteke installed, Crystal Palace clearly boast a proven goal threat to convert Zaha’s service.

Equally, the winger has markedly upped his game when it comes to converting his own chances. His shot accuracy has improved from 28% last season to 42% this term, rewarding him with three goals already.

It remains to be seen if Zaha can maintain such a run.

The Gameweek 16 reunion with former club Manchester United provides a fascinating litmus test; encounters with Chelsea and Arsenal will surely prove equally challenging.

In addition, given that he is now eligible to represent Ivory Coast, there’s a chance that Zaha could now be departing for the African Cup of Nations in January, potentially missing multiple matches from Gameweek 21 onwards.

This all tempers our enthusiasm, along with the fact that it’s difficult to accept that Zaha has suddenly flicked a switch to deliver on our expectations.

The Team

Leicester City are the masters of the unexpected.

Such spectacular servants to Fantasy Football managers last season, they have withered to almost nothing this term, with their key assets seemingly overpriced and underperforming.

But Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Manchester City tore up that script.

With Jamie Vardy rolling back to last season’s form to fire his first ever Premier League hat-trick, the Foxes put up a display that mirrored their staggering title-winning campaign.

Despite this, and a favourable schedule that provides a platform for further success, we have little choice but to remain sceptical.

Now priced among the true heavy-hitters, Vardy and Riyad Mahrez will need to produce sizeable tallies on a regular basis to warrant our investment.

Vardy’s Gameweek 15 haul was the first double-figure haul served by the pair.

Nevertheless, with templates forming for the festive spell, the two mainstays of our 2015/16 campaign can provide tempting sideshows, as we again brace ourselves for Claudio Ranieri’s charges to take us by surprise.

The Talking Point

While Diego Costa ticks on relentlessly, we seem to be forced to re-examine our attacking assets elsewhere on an almost weekly basis.

Midfield heavy-hitters continue to court concern, with Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino entering the red zone and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, once again, causing us to fidget.

Delivering an eighth blank of the season, a third in four Gameweeks, Hazard’s failings are certainly amplified by Costa’s consistency.

Although his underlying numbers warrant monitoring, the fixture list and Chelsea’s form suggest that Hazard has the opportunity to revive his fortunes and calm fears.

Firmino is certainly a more critical case.

Part of 17.8% of squads, he has stalled badly in recent weeks, seemingly limited by Philippe Coutinho’s absence and a shift to the left flank.

Again the underlying statistics are somewhat alarming and while Liverpool have the fixtures and form for the Brazilian to re-ignite, already FPL managers have executed an exit plan. Firmino is second only to the injured Charlie Austin for sales heading into tomorrow’s deadline – clear indication of the merciless approach we’ve been forced to adopt this season.

Alexis Sanchez has provided one telling example of how the hasty removal of a heavy-hitter can damage us. Firmino is perhaps not capable of mirroring Sanchez’s London Stadium haul but he can still provide a punishing points tally.

Whether he can deliver at Middlesbrough or Everton remains to be seen.

In this most ruthless season, returns would appear necessary rather than desirable if Firmino is to remain in our squads heading into 2017.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone considering a 4-4-2 for December? With Costa and Kane up front, the popular premium picks in midfield, and Alonso and a Spurs defender in defence.

No one really looks worth the money for a cheap 5th mid or 3rd striker right?

Plenty of good 3rd strikers. Defoe, Benteke, Llorente emerging now

Defoe and Benteke aren't cheap. With them in the squad, you're surely missing out on one of the popular picks unless you have an exceptional team value. Llorente maybe

Cheap 5th mids I'd agree, 3rd strikers?. I've personally committed to a 5th mid season experiment and I'm a struggling now lol

Canni even get Zaha, was hoping Can was gonna be the option but as you say if you have one of those strikers you are more than likely missing out on one of the top 7 to 8.5m mids.. I genuinely believed at the beginning of the season 3-5-2 was looking a great option. What with so many brilliant options in midfield there in teams who's main priority is to attack

I'm a late adopter of a Chelsea back and in a funny way I'm kind of regretting that transfer now because I could have had a midfield of...

      Sánchez / Eriksen / Antonio / Lallana / Hazard

Yes no Siggy but those next two for him, might prove less fruitful?

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Yeah Siggy isn't a great option for the next two, and Antonio + Lallana could do better.

As for Alonso, I didn't get him just because Chelsea were the best defence in the league. It was more because he was also getting so forward, but unfortunately he doesn't look like he'll contribute much in terms of goals/assists lol. I think he'll still prove worth 6m.

I think I have to decide if I want a Spurs defender or a 6m forward like Llorente.

That's what I'm doing. I've got Kane, Costa, Anichebe up front, and Walker and Alonso at the back, with a very strong four man midfield.

The formation is then a slight toss up each week depending on who get's the last spot in the team between Anichebe, Fer, Nyom and Amat.

You're lucky your 5th mid is Fer. I have Fletcher so I can either swap between 3-4-3 and 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 and 3-5-2. Basically need to decide whether to invest in a 5th mid or 4th premium defender.

        442 is very tempting

        I got
        Alonso Walker McA Holebas Amat
        Haz Theo Firmino Siggy Fletcher
        Kane Costa Wilson

Looking at Wilson and Firmono -> Sanchez and Anichibe
picking 2 out of McA Holebas Amat and Anichibe each match

442 could work until a cheap and consistant striker or midfielder appears.

      Exactly what i'm doing.

Alonso, Alderweireld, McAuley, Fuchs and PVA
      Sanchez, Eriksen, Hazard, Allen, Morrison
      Anichiebe, Kane, Costa

Alonso has sun cpa BOU STO tot lei
Toby has HUL BUR sou wat CHE WBA
McAuley has SWA MUN ars sou HUL tot
Fuchs has bou sto EVE WHU mid CHE

Morrison, Allen, Anchiebe rotation gives me a next 7 fixtures of SWA WAT liv bur HUL STO SUN

Due to indecision and thinking PVA will pop up with a goal now and then, or at least the odd assist, i'm stuck with him - he'll be out ASAP for a 4.5 who will get games over Xmas, don't want a bench fodder 3.9 who can't jump in when teams rotate players. However, if I decide to keep, he does have WAT bur STO wba over the next 7.

I do have too much money tied up in defence, and would like to rid of FUCHS and PVA if I see cheaper options with good fixtures, although leicester will now turn the screw a little until Champs league starts again.

        Very similar to mine:

        Alonso, Walker, Cedric, Nyom, Amat
        Sanchez, Hazard, Alli, Siggy, Fer
        Kane, Costa, Anichiebe

Not sure who to play this week, Fer WBA (a) or Nyom SWA (h)?

Surely Nyom and Amat appeal to you then? Nyom 4.3m with some very good fixtures dotted in between some difficult ones but with a very good run coming end of Jan. Swansea have a decent run of games but I wouldn't expect much from Amat just a nice cheap bench option that plays.

        A Spurs defender might be.

Origi and Carroll not nailed. Llorente could be a decent option. Defoe is not cheap, so if you go for him or Benteke, you are very likely to miss out on one of the template picks.

Phillips and Zaha have hard fixtures this month. Snoddy has average fixtures, but he still plays for Hull. No one looks a great option.

Indeed, Spurs fixtures actually look good all the way into April. I don't think I'll ever take Walker out (got him at £5.5), and I reckon Kane's also going to be a main stay as I don't think I'll be taking Aguero back but who knows, City do have a very good run of fixtures at some point in Feb/March.

Will probably take out Alli after these two home games, but that'll change if he gets a couple of goals I'm sure.

I think Burnley's time as a defensively viable option is over. They got very lucky because of Heaton's perfromances and are now regressing to the norm compared with their chances/shots conceded.

I still like Heaton though, his save numbers are impressive and with the chance of the occasional home clean sheet he's good value for me getting him in at 4.5m from the start near enough.

Okay, I just haven't like the look of them defensively lately. Got him in at 4.7. I will probably shift to Valdes, as I have more faith in Boro.
2,2,3 saves in the last 3 isn't that impressive considering 2 of them were at home.

Still capable of 3-5 points without the clean sheet, I'm not sure about those games but I imagine it's not a case that he could of done better. I take your point though, but since I've taken a hit to get Grant in as more viable option than Pickford as my second keeper as he rotates nicely with Heaton, I'm not looking to take Heaton out. May be an option if I find myself with free transfers.

True. And I would have more faith in Grant long term if Butland remains out. I have Pickford as second keeper - not a lot of CS for him either, so would be looking for someone else.

Good luck either way - not sure when I get around to shipping one of my two playing keepers :/

Made a bit of a stupid call this week.

Took a -4 to bring Grant in for Pickford. Heaton's only worth playing at home it seems, and so I wanted a better option that Pickford since Sunderland never keep clean sheets it seems. Means Grant has to get a clean sheet, and Heaton not, for me to get my points back. But I figured I'll use next weeks free transfer eventually on something else, the -4 was probably inevitable at some point.

Alderweireld been back is probably bigger for Erikson's assist chances. I had my mine made up for me with the price tags but I think Alli is a bigger goal threat, and plays in a better position to profit off Kane's fire with assists.

Sanchez (better returns away from home) or Costa, I wouldn't go with Hazard away from home and I also wouldn't go with Ibrah given that Man Utd are struggling to kill games off.

Neither likely to get a clean sheet, I'd go with Pickford I think.

Am I the only one dreading a Firmino double-digit backlash if I sell him on this week?

Inside the top 11k, winning most ML's and altho not scoring he's imminent for 2/3..big games = big performance and v everton in Derby and away v boro I just think he could cause huge headaches (for us sellers!!)

My team currently is: (All Out Attack being played I think!!!)

    Valdes (Heaton)

    Stones Pieters (Fuchs, Kone, Friend)

    Firmino Siggy Mane Eriksen Fletcher

    Tekkers Kane (C) Lukaku

    2.1 ITB 1 FT

Feelings are I've good cover in Eriksen and Kane.
Strikers in good form despite Costa hurting me every week since I binned him when reached 4YC's. Defense weakish but intentional as CS's a lottery except Chelsea and expensive.

    Options are:

    A) save FT and keep AOA option
    B) Fuchs > Rose
    C) Join the masses and go Firmino > Payet as already have Eriksen and Siggy
    D) Overkill Spurs and go Firmino > Alli and double up with Eriksen + Kane.

Humour me please with plenty of feedback, Firmino exploding when my H2H opponent having him also is a big worry but Payet/ City midfielder looks appealing.

    Cheers all...
