Scout Notes – EFL Cup – Thursday

A spirited Hull City take Manchester United’s unbeaten record but it is the Red Devils who will face Southampton at Wembley after an entertaining EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

Hull City 2 Manchester United 1 (2-3 on aggregate)

Hull City won the battle but lost the war as Manchester United did just enough to book their ticket to the EFL Cup final.

Marco Silva made seven changes from the team beaten at Chelsea and still produced strong evidence of the positive influence he’s brought to the Premier League strugglers since taking the job, overseeing a first defeat for United in 17 matches.

Jose Mourinho also made changes – five – to the team that drew with Stoke, although the side still included regulars Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic , David De Gea and Phil Jones .

Centre-half Eric Bailly, back from the Africa Cup of Nations, was not available but could be in line for a start in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

A Tom Huddlestone penalty after a foul, of sorts, on Harry Maguire put the Tigers ahead before Pogba’s second half equaliser looked to have put the tie to bed.

Hull refused to accept that fate and Oumar Niasse, given his first start, converted from a David Meyler pass late on to give the home side a deserved victory.

Silva took the opportunity to give second half run-outs to new signings Lazar Markovic and Evandro and also threw on in-form striker Abel Hernandez in a late bid to take the tie to extra-time.

The in-demand Robert Snodgrass (5.8), who has been sidelined with a muscle issue, wasn’t even in the squad, however, as he contemplates a number of offers to take him away from the KCOM Stadium, with West Ham the current favourites to land him following a medical today.

United’s fine unbeaten run might now be over, but it was the overall result that mattered, setting up a February 26 date with Southampton at Wembley.

That means no Gameweek 26 derby at Manchester City, with a double Gameweek 34 or 37 now likely. If it is the former, that would involve another away match, at Burnley. If the latter, then United would have to travel to both City and Spurs in a daunting double-header. Neither scenario is likely to satisfy Mourinho.

Throw in the resumption of Europa League duties just two days before the FA Cup fifth round ties begin on February 18, and even United’s squad will be stretched to the limit.

That could have repercussions for FPL’s current most popular player Ibrahimovic, who is owned by 43.3% of managers.

Mourinho has not been shy in using the Swede in all competitions this season, but such a punishing schedule will likely require rotation of even the biggest names. With United already missing Gameweek 26, FPL managers will have to decide whether to take that hit by sticking with Ibrahimovic and then hope he is saved primarily for league duties through a frantic February and beyond.

As for Hull, confidence is returning and the results are starting to come, as Silva pointed out post-match.

“That is three wins from our last three home games and when I arrived here, the team hadn’t won for two months. We need to continue this home form because it gives confidence to my players.”

Silva’s next foray’s into the transfer market will be crucial to their prospects, along with that home form.

But their next three league fixtures – United (again), Liverpool and Arsenal – suggests the time to look at any of their assets is from Gameweek 26 onwards when their schedule dramatically improves.

Eldin Jakupovic’s absence is somewhat troubling for his 20% ownership, with David Marshall recalled in goal on Thursday evening. Omitted from the matchday squad, it’s presumed that the 3.9 priced keeper was one of those rested with Premier League duties in mind.

Hull City XI: Marshall, Tymon, Maguire, Dawson, Meyler, Huddlestone, Clucas, Maloney (Goebel 64), Niasse, Diomande (Hernández 70), Bowen (Markovic 59).
Subs not used: Kuciak, Robertson, Elabdellaoui, Weir.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Darmian, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Carrick, Herrera, Pogba, Lingard (Rooney 79), Rashford (Fellaini 90+1), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: Romero, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Shaw, Fosu-Mensah.

You think he's that good? Obviously haven't seen that much of him. He's a great attacking outlet but pretty awful defender, albeit the only time I have seen him to well defensively was under allardyce.

I think £14m is very good deal and we couldn't turn that down the financial position we're in.

Definitely for his attacking ability Sunderland will miss him.
He is good at set pieces too.
I have heard a couple of players are also out of the club, say Defoe only financial profit.

Can't remember people being this worried about the blanks in previous years. I think making transfers based on it right now is somewhat silly anyway, still three weeks to go. Three weeks of an Eriksen or an Alli over Barkley/Mirallas/other non-blanky midfielder is totally worth the one blank, imo.

These guy are studs and will likely cost you ~0.5m in TV and a silly amount of transfers just for the sake of a couple of blanks.

I need the TV to maximise my bench boost wildcard at the back end of the season and the transfers used on lesser players.

Its a concern for my side since I have 3Ars and 1 United along with 2 players who wont play, Anichebe and Diomande.

So have to make every move considering them. I dont have any concern regarding GW28, nobody is going to have a full side and even if they do, they probably wont be able perform well after that GW.

I'm in a similar position 2 Arsenal, 2 United and 2 players who wont play. If others in a similar position to us don't manage their transfers with GW26 in mind, they will not have a full 11 that week without taking hit.

        Good morning!If you can help.
From the Efl cup four teams(Man utd,Man city,Sou,Ars) will have a blank in gw26 right?
At first for the fourth Fa cup round(27-28-29 Jan) we must try to guess the winners. The winners will play for the fifth round(18-19-20 Feb).Ηοw(with a draw?) couples of fifth round will be scheduled and when?
        e.g Chelsea-Watford gw28.
Games of fourth Fa cup round: Chelsea vs Brentford /Millwall vs Watford.
If for the fourth round Chelsea qualify and Watford not and for the fifth round Chelsea does not qualify then the game between them will normally take place in gw 28?
Before and after the fifth round games have been scheduled for the Champions league and Europa. This will affect the teams that will play in the fifth round? What the dickens?
        Thanks any thoughts appreciated!

Kane's a great pick (with small injury doubt) but don't see why would lose lukaku for him now unless rest of squad is ideal.

For me this comes firmly under "advanced FPL" which Mark should be looking to differentiate FFS from FPL Twitter, which should be more "is it time to look at Llorente?" type tweets, imo, given the demographic.

Sure, they will need to remind people that certain teams have no game, in the week running up to the game, but strategy about how to navigate the blanks, DGWs and chips - that's FFS territory.

I don't get why people have an issue with more open discussion on what are still uncertain future outcomes. If we're so good at this game our points will back that up, otherwise we're not.

The FPL Show that Mark does is arguably better at presenting stats and opinion than the scoutcast anyhow

People are used to having things too easy. 150k people follow the account and you see a lot of "casual" questions tweeted at them, but I would think the majority who follow them already know what they're doing.

To me it should be quite simple. FPL is "the game" and "the game" is fine to tell people about factually correct information that has changed "the game" (such as fixture changes). But "the game" shouldn't be telling people how to play "the game" - that is not the job of "the game", that is the job of places like FFS, or any of the numerous over people/sites that give FPL tips.

You don't get the ATP telling all the professional players how to play tennis, but you would get them to tell the players if the schedule has changed.

Surely FFS is here to make money allowing people to share opinions on how to play the game and indeed tell people how to play the game... let's not kid ourselves.

There are so many podcasts and websites out there on FPL these days

Equating pro tennis players with fantasy managers? That perspective's completely unrealistic. It's a marketing & money-making enterprise that just happens to be about fantasy football.

Yes, and IMO that's where Mark should be firmly asserting FFS's USP as more in depth content. At the end of the day, FFS is his business and FPL are just a partner, who can cut that cord anytime.

Giroud out for a hit not worth it in my opinion, Arsenal have Watford next ! Jesus is definitely one to monitor though, I'd hold for now and if he starts against West Ham, considering bring him on board the following week for Swansea.

I'm losing a little patience with him, worth taking out or holding?

LOL, I don't see this having the desire effect. The official site has removed GW 26 blanks from the fixture color coded tab that EVERYONE looks at when deciding to make a transfer. (Don't pretend you don't). If you don't look closely at it how it goes 24,25,27 looks like MC and MU players have a sea of green upcoming!

Sure, click on a Man U player, Ibra for instance. Click view information. Then click Fixtures box next to History. They've primed everyone based on green is good, red is bad, so doubt many people look very closely at the actual GW numbers. They just look at the pattern of the colors. It's pretty misleading unless you look very closely.

I don't look at it before making a transfer decision. I use the ticker on here though.

tips on below guys - on 9 red arrows now

                          heaton / pick
azpi / pieters / nyom (amat / chambers)
                          alli / sanchez (c) / phillips / lallana (can)
                          giroud / ibra / kane

                          1FT, 1.6m ITB

thinking Lallan > Eriksen or Amat > Rose/Brunt

Would that defence be too much headache then?

                          is chambers out for long?

Still waiting for news but it sounds like it could be anything from 1-4 weeks for Chambers. So not a definite sell just yet

I like the addition of Rose to your defense

if i go brunt he's cheaper and no blank

then more £££ to upgrade giroud > costa/lukaku

Nice. Solid plan as that sets you up for the Giroud exit, something I'll have to work out as well.

Run of red arrows with that team only points to one culprit, an underperforming defence. So yeah turning Amat into a second premium defender would be wise. I would do an EVE defender as that move and hold off on Rose or Brunt until next GW if you still want to go in that direction.

A'noon all. A couple of things:

1.) For gw 24, which is best mid up to 8.2 to swap out for Lallana? Thinking Antonio plus cash? Have Phillips.

2.) I have Luka and Baines, who is best 3rd toffee? Holgate or Davies?

Depends on a lot of factors, position you want to strengthen, desired formation, alternatives, etc. I like Davies for value but he's got some question marks around sustainability of starts. But for 4.4m, he can enable flexibility elsewhere, which I like. Barkley would be my other recommendation, he seems like he is finding his form again and has the freedom to push much more forward in their current formation.
