The Weekly Shop – Gameweek 25

Welcome to our latest instalment of the Weekly Shop where, once again, we cast an eye over the player list of our partner game FanDuel.

We start our analysis by first identifying some of the key fixture match-ups ahead, before drilling down to name some of our specific targets ahead of the weekend contest deadlines.

A convincing victory at Leicester City on Sunday suggests that Manchester United are in the mood to provide points ahead of a home clash with Watford. Seventeen goals from 12 Old Trafford matches is a disappointing output for the Red Devils, particularly when you consider that they rank second for goal attempts, having fired in 230 efforts this season. With Jose Mourinho calling for a sharper cutting edge, we suspect that United’s attacking options can and will deliver against the Hornets.

Back-to-back defeats have made Arsenal’s attacking options less desirable but the underlying numbers indicate that we should persevere with Arsene Wenger’s charges. Meanwhile, visitors Hull City provide their own cast of FanDuel options, with a newly resilient defence set to construct a stubborn barrier against the Gunners.

In contrast, the Bournemouth backline have been hopelessly fragile of late, though their rearguard should still guarantee us FanDuel returns ahead of Manchester City’s visit. Pep Guardiola’s men arrive bristling with attacking menace and boast an array of in-form options that are likely to feature across our weekend line-ups.

The Better Buys

To start our player list analysis, we examine some of the targets that tick both the form and fixtures boxes. While these players occupy the top end of the FanDuel market, they are the selections that can reap the big points hauls required to challenge for the contest top spots.

We begin by attempting to fill our keeper’s jersey – a position that traditionally allows for a budget option. However, often FanDuel can tempt us with a top bracket keeper, pitched at a reasonable price, and that appears to be the case this week.

Manchester United’s David De Gea (£6.9m) has secured back-to-back clean sheets to make it three in five matches; only Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois has kept more than the Spaniard’s nine shutouts this season.

Watford visit Old Trafford having scored twice in each of their last two away (including at the Emirates) but, prior to those matches, they had notched just three goals in their previous eight road trips.

If we want to spend that little bit more and seek out save points, then Sunderland’s Vito Mannone (£7.5m) certainly fits the bill. The Italian has made 32 stops since taking over from Jordan Pickford in Gameweek 19 – more than any other keeper. He faces a Southampton attack that has been struggling on their travels, blanking in four of their last six.

In FanDuel, it’s only the keepers who earn points for clean sheets. For defenders, it’s successful tackles as well as clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI’s) that yield the majority of their returns.

Burnley’s Matt Lowton (£8m) has made 29 tackles over the last six Gameweeks, ranking top for that metric. An encouraging 49 CBI’s has also helped him build an average of 19.6 during that period.

Meanwhile, Clarets centre-back Ben Mee is available for £8.1m and recorded 57 CBI’s over his last six outings, while also managing seven goal attempts. Both look tempting as they welcome the Chelsea tide to Turf Moor.

Bournemouth’s Steve Cook (£8.3m) is an excellent example of the workings of FanDuel’s scoring system: he earned 30 points against Everton last weekend, despite conceding six goals.

Cook contributed 13 CBI in that match and should be kept busy again with Manchester City paying visit to the Vitality Stadium – we’re expecting Cook to match his strong 20.63-point average in Monday’s match.

Cook is vying for top spot on the CBI leaderboard with Hull City’s Harry Maguire (£8.7m) – the pair have both recorded a tally of 51 over the last four Gameweeks. The Tigers centre-back is, once again, a viable selection ahead of his trip to face Arsenal. Like Cook, we’re anticipating that Maguire will be worked and handed the opportunity to perhaps surpass his 19.25 average.

Our first midfield target is a rather obvious one, given his current form and the struggles of weekend opponents, Leicester City.

Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson (£11.8m) has struck 13 goal attempts over last four – more than any other midfield option. That’s helped earn a 34.1-point FanDuel average in that spell, with three goals and an assist accrued. Leicester make the trip to South Wales having conceded ten times over their last four matches and 25 goals from 12 away matches this season.

Our second top bracket target is more of a gamble, although given the potential value on offer, it appears to be a risk worth taking.

West Ham’s January signing Robert Snodgrass could prove to be a canny mid-price acquisition for £8.6m, with the Scot expected to be handed his first home start for the Hammers against West Brom. A 21.85 average is certainly promising and, while we’re yet to see how he settles in his new surrounds, that kind price point encourages investment against a Baggies side that have claimed just a single clean sheet on their travels.

With Watford the visitors, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£13.2m) will doubtless be heavily backed to add to his tally of 15 goals. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, at £10.7m, looks a viable alternative, however. The Armenian tallied 48.5 at Leicester City on Sunday, providing the satisfying combination of a goal and an assist from three chances created and two shots on target. Only three midfielders have created more chances than his 14 over the last six Gameweeks.

Gabriel Jesus (£11.6m) has usurped Sergio Aguero following his match-winning performance against Swansea City on Sunday. The Brazilian’s four shots on target and as many chances created over a pair of starts have delivered three goals and an assist. That’s translated to scores of 58.5 and 33.75 in FanDuel, making him a key target ahead of a trip to Bournemouth.

With the Cherries defence leaking goals at an alarming rate (16 in five) we must also consider doubling up on their attack, with Raheem Sterling (£10.7m) looking an intriguing candidate having provided attacking returns in seven of his last nine outings.

Finally, it’s always impossible to ignore Alexis Sanchez (£13.4m) when considering top bracket options. The Chilean is top for forwards for both goal attempts (28) and chances created (14) over the last six and, while opponents Hull City will doubtless provide a stubborn barrier at the Emirates Stadium, the Arsenal man remains a key target.

The Poundstretchers

We now turn our attentions to the more budget-friendly options. These are the picks that present a kind price tag but who also provide the promise of a steady points return to sit alongside our expensive big-hitting “Better Buy” options.

We start with an option between the sticks, namely West Ham’s Darren Randolph (£6.9m).

The Hammers have been enjoying home comforts more of late, registering three clean sheets in their last five home matches. Six saves at Southampton last weekend demonstrates the Irishman’s ability to generate points and, with opponents West Brom failing to net in three of their last five on the road, we can be optimistic on his clean sheet prospects.

Scott Dann’s late injury against Sunderland could result in a Crystal Palace debut for Mamadou Sakho (£6.9m) at the bet365 Stadium. James Tomkins, at £7.0m, is also a likely candidate for inclusion against Stoke City with the Eagles defence expected to be occupied with the presence of Peter Crouch in the Potters’ attack. That should provide a platform for the Palace defender to pick up CBI’s, with Sam Allardyce seeking a response to last weekend’s miserable 4-0 mauling to the Black Cats.

Stoke City provide their own bargain defender for us to ponder. Phil Bardsley could be available for £6.9m with Glen Johnson still a doubt to recover. Bardsley scored 23.5 FanDuel points against West Brom last weekend, creating a couple of chances and winning three tackles.

Hull City’s renaissance has been evident in their FanDuel scoring, with Marco Silva’s new look side giving us a few promising fresh faces to monitor. Omar Elabdellaoui (£6.9m) earned 23.5 points against Liverpool on Saturday, making 15 clearances – he provides a cheap route into the Tigers’ rearguard as an alternative to Maguire.

Staying with the Hull squad, we’re also monitoring midfielder Alfred N’Diaye (£6.9m) as a possible “enabler”. The Senegalese scored 43.5 points with a goal, six CBI’s, three tackles and two shots on target in the win over Liverpool. He’s another likely key figure who could thrive against Arsenal.

Another recent signing, Burnley’s Robbie Brady (£7.4m), is also on our radar having recorded 12.75 points in just 35 minutes at Watford last weekend. The ex-Norwich winger managed one shot on target, a tackle, an interception, two fouls drawn and created a chance in his brief second-half cameo. Jeff Hendrick’s suspension may open the way for a full Brady debut against Chelsea, which could lead to a very healthy first return – particularly if he is handed set-piece duties.

Southampton’s newest recruit Manolo Gabbiadini (£9.0m) is another risk that could offer reward, having tallied 30.75 FanDuel points on his debut in the home defeat to West Ham. The Italian netted once from six attempts, all inside the box, and also registered two chances created and three fouls drawn (worth 0.5 points apiece in FanDuel) to indicate that he could profit handsomely from a visit to Sunderland.

If funds are tight and Gylfi Sigurdsson fails to make our line-ups, then we may look to Fernando Llorente (£8.6m) as an option for our forward lines. The Spaniard has scored five goals in his last six at the Liberty Stadium, including two braces. He’s surely set to be a key figure against the Foxes in a game that appears to promise goals.

Finally, the aforementioned Peter Crouch (£8.2m) has renewed past glories in recent weeks – notching four goals and a couple of assists over his last six outings. Only Romelu Lukaku (15) has had more shots inside the box (14) than the veteran frontman over those six Gameweeks and, despite the threat from new signing Saido Berahino, we see Crouch starting and troubling the visiting Palace defence.

Join me back here on Friday for more FanDuel coverage, as I reveal our strongest XI and run through some of the contests on offer for Gameweek 25.

Had a shocking GW last week and rage transferred Siggy and Lukaku in for Aguero and Stanislas Sat evening for a -4 hit. Dropped from OR 35K to 80K. Dropped 50 pts back on my ML leader also. Worst weekend in memory when it seems everyone else had a royaler 🙁

    Foster Jaku
    Brunt Williams Alonso PVA Holebas
    Alli Eriksen Sanchez Phillips Siggy
    Lukaku Ibra Diomande

Plenty of time to catch leader right? How's my team looking moving forward with the blanks, what area's do I need to improve to get back on track?

The hindsight heartbreak is that I fancied Aguero & Dio to Lukaku and G.Jesus with my 2 FT but couldn't rid of Aguero home to Swansea and gave him the armband stupidly. Sorted my DF instead with 2 FT in anticipation of blanks. It felt like a kick in the stones on Sat but the KO punch came Sunday with Kun benched and Jesus netting a brace. Worst feeling of FPL in a while. It was a 50+ pt swing 🙁

it all depends on if you want Coleman/Baines or not
          if Not
Then Simply do Daniels to Funes Mori and Save other FT
if you are inclined to Keep Daniels for Blanks then just do Allen to Carroll to free up funds ...
If you get Coleman you can play him ahead of Nyom this week ....so it all depends on what you want to do......

Thanks for the reply. Main reason I wanted Mori was for a way to Everton's defence while still getting cash to upgrade one of my mids (really lacking there).

Coleman/Baines would be ideal but then I'd have a premium defence/attack and still threadbare in midfield. So Funes would suit me better

Food for thought not for this GW but perhaps GW 28?

"Swansea head coach Paul Clement has been speaking ahead of his side’s crunch match with Leicester, live on Super Sunday, and he says new signing Jordan Ayew should feature.

“Jordan is in good shape. He arrived yesterday into the country. He spent yesterday afternoon with the medical and physical department doing checks and he was fine.

“He joined training this morning and he’s good, he’s ready to go and he’ll be involved at the weekend.

“I haven’t decided [if he’ll be starting]. He is fit but they’re the kind of decisions I’ll confirm over the next couple of days.”

My thoughts exactly i think a lot of FPL players play the 3-4-3 formation this year including myself and at £5.0 mil it isn't half bad choice.

Probably take Routledge's position. Can play off Llorente too, which would mean a change in formation. Doubt he'll be a starter so soon though, when Narsingh can't break into the side either.

Think he'll play out wide as a winger can see Narsingh taking Routledge's position and maybe Clement going with a 4-4-2 formation with Llorente up to with him

I was thinking about making straight transfers of:
    (5th Def) Chambers > Maguire
(Bench fodder) F. Campbell > Diomande

but with the latter seemingly out of contention with the first XI,
should I look at downgrading Sanchez (after Hull) to get a nailed striker and another GW28 player in midfield?

Only problem being that it will take 2 transfers to get Sanchez back.

    2 FT and 1.3 ITB

    Heaton
    Coleman - Valencia - Alonso
    Alli - Sanchez - Phillips - Lanzini
    Kane - Ibra - Defoe

    Pickford, Amat, Evans, De Roon

Thinking to do only 1 transfer so that I have 2 FT before GW 26. Might do Zlatan + Sanchez for Lukaku and Siggy then. Really don't want to change any in the starting XI before this round. Actually considering straight swap Pickford - Jaku for possible blank Heaton/Pickford GW 28 reasons only. It's such a boring strategy, but it feels most logical and also I'm leading the most important mini-league with more than 40 points. Any thoughts? Any players MUST have for GW 25 that I don't have? I take it you are deliberating getting siggy in too, im in the same boat, really want him for this week but struggling to ditch alli or erik, I think with non of my ml rivals having him eith means I can hold off, but then we all get greedy for more points, the chel fixture is the sticking point esp as spurs have stoke.......im going to give it some more thought

It was the right time to sell. Don't feel too bad about it. I did Defoe to Rondon a few weeks back (Prior to the Liverpool game) still feeling the pain of that one.

  14. greghammer95

I can see the advantage of bringing siggy in for sure. Although I think those rushing to sell Alli/Eriksen for him are slightly mad. Especially given the blank situation.

My reasoning here is that OK, Swans have the better fixture this week, but they're still Swansea, could easily lose, Spurs away against a team that haven't won at home all season and ship goals for fun.

Then next week Spurs have STK(H). Lovely fixture (although a bit of a bogey team I believe?), whilst Swansea are away against the best team in the league. (Chelsea).

For me it's a case of wait two more weeks and see what the blank GW's are looking like. After that Siggy looks the better option but it's very short term when we all need our transfers to prepare for the GW28 blanks.

I second this. One of them tempting ones that is all together not very sensible but having him in my team this week would look good.

God I hope after all the Siggy hype he actually does something this weekend, anything. Just imagine the scene if he don't, especially when it's Chelsea up next.. Then again if he does bring home some points and Alli/Erik blank, be a nightmare for those of us who don't have him and those two. Will close our eyes that night and see the name Siggy Siggy Siggy

I've left him till after the Chelsea fixture when he has a clear run of fixtures with no blanks. Sanchez to hazard after the weekend is my priority transfer. Happy to bring hazard in even though he probably blanks gw28 and will bench him. Leaving sanchez out till gw31 as he has 2 probable blanks and Liverpool and city away.

Only playing with 7 in week 28 and hoping to load up on city/chelsea/utd/spurs/arsenal and probably pool (if they improve) without having to play w/c for dgw34. This will allow me to play bench boost in 34 and wildcard gw36 with triple captain gw37 (dgw).

we can only do so much on planning it rationally but say Siggy gets a haul and Eriksen blank, which is a possible outcome, I'm sure some who'd decided to hold will be hitting themselves..Liv seems to be shipping goals against lesser teams..some of us own a triple Spurs attack so deciding to drop one for Siggy probably isn't unwise..

Can't argue with that. For me Eriksen is my only Spurs player so i'm probably in a different situation to a lot on here.

Hugely tempted, but can't justify this week.

      Midfield 4 are
      De Bruyne - bou away
      Antonio - 26/28
      Sanchez - HUL
Alli - 26, seems like a differential a bit now as a few sales spotted on the forums.

      1. greghammer95
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 2 months ago

De Bruyne is a nice differential. Definitely wouldn't class Alli as a differential just yet though.

Only way I can justify it to myself is that I'm downgrading De Gea next week anyways to be able to bring in Coleman/Baines for PVA. Maybe worth doing this one so I get some points out of the downgrade.

Yeah, plus his 27 fixture (sun) is better than Sanchez (liv). I also hope his lower ownership means I won't see (too many) drops in value, vs. Sanchez who is likely to go down to ~11.3 given the poor fixtures and blanks imo.

Will keep Ibra - BOU in GW27 is captain material, and hopefully a way to punish sellers / those who don't buy back!

Wow you have DDG!? SO much £££ tied up in a keeper. You're right to divest ASAP 🙂

True. So you'll be getting rid of Sanchez then? Haz got to be an option? If Chelsea go out the FA Cup too. (Unlikely I know).

Ibra will be my captain for sure. If Lukaku can score 4 what can Ibra do?

I went with a different strategy this season and went with De Gea/Jaku. Haven't changed all season, nor has it worked. Having said that though I've been quite unlucky with them conceding 1 goal so often. Still, worth the experiment. Never again.

Depends on your situation though tbf. If you have bench boost, TC & wildcard all to play you should be able to do that.

This is a week where the majority will captain Ibra and a haul could really damage you, I'm playing safe for that reason.

I have all chips except AOA as I used it on earlier this season (think it's a useless chip anyway) but if I play it right and pick the right TC,BB and use my WC wisely then I can catch up like.

Yeah I saw it forthcoming had Ibra since Christmas people might have to take -4 hit but I doubt they will when majority will do Kane > Ibra this GW then switch back GW 26

Some reports saying Rose will be back end Feb or early march.
And Vertonghen should be back end Feb which means they can shift to 3-5-2.

Till the time Rose return Davies can play RWB. And there are only 2 GWs between now and March so we might see Spurs line up 3-5-2 in GW27 itself.

No way can you bench Funes Mori against the league's lowest scorers surely?

aafter a shocking week last week with no Lukaku I have done Stanislas to Siggy on Sunday eve.

Do I need to ship out Aguero, realistically might not start again.. Dropped to 120k from 40k so would really value some opinions?? Thanks

I would turn to Lukaku given his form/fixtures and no blanks

How did you have the funds for Stan to Siggy with Aguerro in your team. May aswell keep him now, Jesus knows what Pep will do this weekend..

Aguero a real problem. But if you still have him I would take a last risk and Cpt him.
Fair chance he is the main man this GW
      Yeah , tricky for sure
If your'e chasing seems the percentage move, Or are you close to leader ? then go for less risk

Yeah tough. But such is the game . Guess you're chasing so risks need to be taken ?

chasing 70 points in one cash league and leading another cash league by 5 points so its a mixed bag.. tempted to go safe until the blanks and use all my chips wisely..
does that mean Kun --> Lukaku this week or wait a week....

    GTG? 1FT, 1.5 ITB

    Courtois
    Baines, Nyom, Yoshida
    Hazard, Coutinho, Zaha, Sterling
    Ibra(c), Costa (VC), Lukaku

    subs: Jaku, Carroll, Chambers, Holgate

Likely suggestions might be to upgrade the defense. If so any must do for this GW or can I save and do it next GW keeping in mind the blanks?

Holgate to a guaranteed week 28 starter?

at least he has some chance of playing in GW 28. Yoshida and Chambers will have blanks. Yoshida blanks GW26 and 28. So, I was thinking of doing Yoshida if I had to touch my defense.

There are so many guaranteed blanks in GW28 that I do not want to ship out any players that could possibly earn points, although not guaranteed now. anyways, thank you for your suggestion!!!

    Afternoon all!

bad week last week like many on here that don't own Lukaku, wit the upcoming gameweeks I need to do some surgery to my squad, any thoughts appreciated!

Current team, 2 FT and 0 ITB

    Foster Jaku

    Coleman Gibson Holgate Alonso Ake

Phillips Sanchez Firminho Alli De Roon

    Zlatan Costa Campbell

Need to move Ake and Campbell on but Campbell can wait another week or two.

    Best option?

    A. Gibson and Ake -> Maguire and Kone (rotate well)
    B. Gibson and Ake -> Kaboul and Naughton
    C. Gibson and Ake -> Kaboul and Robertson

Planning on taking out Sanchez next week for Hazard

    All suggestions welcome!

I was pondering that move alright but was going to hang onto Firminho especially as Siggy has Chelsea after this gameweek, viable option though, one that I may well go with, cheers!

Do you really have nothing ITB?? what is your team value?

Instead of changing two at the back you could just do 1 for now and save 1 for next GW imo and when you free some money after selling sanchez you could invest well on a better defender.

Yeah i'm afraid so, not a bean in the bank and squad only at 100.2! Few underperforming players who I let sit too long, the main reason for changing two defenders was to get Ake out and to do that I need cash from somewhere

That would mean dropping Sanchez at home to Hull though, I see what you're saying though. Decision time!

Guys that have almost given up . Ask Jinswick how he made up 50 odd points in the last GW last year. Sorry Jins , could have been more ?

      Agreed 😀

I think it's important to realise how bleak their position is though because then they know the type of risks they need to take it off...
