The Digest – Gameweek 32

Son Heung-min stakes a claim for regular minutes to muddy our thoughts on the Spurs attack, Crystal Palace’s momentum builds ahead of double Gameweek 34, while Arsenal’s double Gameweeks 36 and 37 prompt another Alexis Sanchez rethink.

The Player

Just when the return of Harry Kane seemed to have solved our Spurs’ attacking conundrum for the run-in, Son Heung-min’s performance at home to Watford provides further food for thought.

Prior to the South Korean’s 19 point-haul against the Hornets, it had all looked so straightforward, with Mauricio Pochettino expected to revert to a 3-4-2-1 formation, allowing Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to run riot from central positions behind the England international.

But while Kane was afforded a half-hour run-out on Saturday lunchtime in order to build up his match fitness, Son turned on the style to stake a serious claim for increased pitch-time.

Stationed on the left of a 4-2-3-1, two goals and an assist – allied with back-to-back strikes in the previous two Gameweeks – have made him the number one transfer target in Fantasy Premier League, with more than 92,000 managers clambering aboard the bandwagon ahead of a plum home clash against Bournemouth.

Granted, Son has struggled to secure a regular role this season, with 11 of his 28 league appearances arriving off the bench. Yet on the back of Saturday’s showing, a spot in the first XI may well be his to lose now.

As evidenced by his 6.7 points per match, Kane – as the number one spot-kick taker – remains our go-to option among the Spurs attacking contingent.

However, the 7.1-priced Son, whose average of 145.5 minutes per goal is more frequent than any FPL midfielder this term, may now offer the best value option and rival the pricier Alli (9.2) and Eriksen (8.8) as the choice route into Pochettino’s thriving midfield.

The Team

A comprehensive 3-0 drubbing of Arsenal at Selhurst Park brought Crystal Palace yet another step closer to survival as the Sam Allardyce effect gains momentum.

Five wins in six, including four clean sheets and victories on the road against the likes of league leaders Chelsea and West Brom, underlines the impact of the Eagles’ new manager, whose side now sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Handily, Palace’s improved form at both ends of the pitch pre-empts a double Gameweek 34, sandwiched between home clashes against Leicester and Burnley.

Admittedly, Allardyce’s side will face Liverpool and Spurs in Gameweek 34, yet recent results clearly highlight that they have the form to prevail.

At the back, the absence of the on-loan Mamadou Sakho for the first match of their double (against parent club Liverpool) diminishes the clean sheet potential on offer from the Eagles’ rearguard, though the likes of Wayne Hennessey (4.3) and Joel Ward (4.8) remain value options. Having returned to training ahead of the weekend, Patrick van Aanholt’s fitness is also worth monitoring, given his keen eye for goal.

Further up the field, Allardyce’s influence has reignited the Fantasy appeal of Wilfried Zaha. At 5.9, the winger is behind only Son and Kane for transfers-in on the back of two goals and three assists in the last five Gameweeks.

On the opposite flank, Andros Townsend’s two goals and pair of assists in five harks back to his end-of-season displays for Newcastle in 2015/16. At less than 2% ownership and priced at 5.8, the former Spurs man looks a ready-made differential, providing he shrugs off a minor heel problem.

Up top, Christian Benteke’s two goals and an assist in three has also turned a few heads – only Kane and Romelu Lukaku have earned more new owners among the strikers since Saturday’s deadline passed.

Allardyce may well have his detractors but, as we’ve seen time and again, his sides have the potential to offer excellent Fantasy value from back to front.

While today’s announcement on double Gameweeks 36 and 37 remains the focal point for most, Palace’s short-term appeal cannot be overlooked. Potential investment, over the next three at least, should afford us time to capitalise on their ascent before we freshen up our squads with the second wildcard in time for the doubles.

The Talking Point

Palace’s emphatic win over Arsenal on Monday evening merely compounded the Alexis Sanchez issue.

The top-scoring FPL player’s seemingly unassailable lead at the summit has been whittled away to just four points in recent weeks thanks to a run of three successive blanks – the first time this season he has experienced such a slump.

Although a recent role on the left clearly hasn’t helped, Sanchez has still thrived on the flank when Olivier Giroud starts – it’s been the installation of Danny Welbeck up front that has proven pivotal in his downfall.

Yet with eight matches still remaining in the final six Gameweeks, can we really rule him out altogether?

While the 26% currently retaining his services may opt to keep him ahead of clashes against Middlesbrough and Leicester City and a north London derby against Spurs in Gameweek 35, non-owners may take a different approach in light of today’s double Gameweek announcements.

Given that Arsenal will play twice in both Gameweek 36 and 37 before hosting Everton on the final day of the season, those still holding their second Wildcards could now wait until Gameweek 36 before considering the Sanchez option as they freshen up their squads for the final three rounds of fixtures.

Going on current form, that seems a sensible solution for those yet to invest, affording instead the chance to bring in Palace or United assets for double Gameweek 34.

There’s no question that, on his day, Sanchez – whose average of 6.8 points per match is more than any regular player this term – remains possibly the most explosive asset around.

Five matches in the final three, including clashes with Man United, Southampton, Stoke City and Sunderland, hand the Chilean a platform to cement his place at the FPL summit.

Yet with rumours over his – and Arsene Wenger’s – future gathering pace, Sanchez’s ability to rise above the chatter and shake off his recent malaise may now have a significant impact on how many of our seasons play out.

Thoughts appreciated. Seems crazy to ditch Sanchez as part of a -8, but I have my WC in hand, my main ML rival has neither Sanchez or a WC. I'm 16pts ahead, he is unlikely to have both Kane and Aguero...C is really tempting me and leaves me with Kane Aguero Lukaku front line this week and 3 DGW players for the following one...

    Triple Captain options.

So if you've not used it yet, like me, and you're saving your bench boost for 37. These appear to be the sum total of your options.

    The "Safe"

    Zlatan.
Pro. Nailed, United are better away, on penalties, in form.
Cons. May be rested for Burnley game in light of Europa. United don't score many, literally ever. Rarely goes big. Fixtures are tough.

    Sanchez.
Pro. Nailed. Still Arsenal's main threat. Potentially explosive.
Cons. Arsenal in a collective mess and in terrible form. Fixtures are very tough. Arsenal could easily not score in either fixture. Playing out wide not up front. Head looks shot.

    The risky.

    Gabbiadini.
Pros. Lethal, can score against anyone. Playing for a team who's confidence is up.
Cons. Just back from injury, could be rotated.

    Benteke/Zaha.
Pros. In good form, both individually and as a team. Zaha arguably in the form of his life. Largely appear fixture proof.

Cons. Just shocking fixtures. Awful, really bad. May consider themselves all but safe if they beat Leicester.

    Mkhitaryan
Pros. Uniteds most creative player. Trusted now by manager. Links up very well with Zlatan.

Cons. Highly liable to be rotated. Tough fixtures as already discussed.

    Ozil/Theo
Pros. Positions relativity safe, both potentially explosive, Arsenal can score heavily on their day. Ozil on all set pieces.

Cons. It's Arsenal, see Sanchez. Theo also tends to get dragged early most matches.

    The absolute punts.

    Pogba.
Pros. Plays every minute when fit. Has to go big one day. Averages 25 shots a match.

Cons. Is garbage 75% of the time. Woeful fixtures. Often plays too deep.

    Martial.
Pros. Is Uniteds best player on his day.

Cons. His day is almost never.

    Redmond/Tadic.
Pros. Both start almost every match. Set pieces, pace, power, shoot on sight, what's not to love?

    Cons. I'm honestly considering them...

    A Boro defender/keeper.

Pros. Two very good fixtures, could easily keep clean sheets in both.

Cons. You're talking about triple captaining a defender from a team who are going to get relegated.

    The left field options.

Triple captain a spurs player this week.

Bench boost in 36 instead, and triple captain Kane, Aguero or Hazard in 37.

Man. These are not good options...

The team doesn't matter. Wenger can't beat Mourinho even at the latter's worst (see Arsenal v. Chelsea last season). Of course there's (usually) a first for everything so you never know, but Wenger's record vs. Mourinho is horrendous

In 14 competitive matches so far (so excluding Community Shield), Wenger has 0W - 7L - 7D, with 6 goals scored and 22 goals allowed. Woeful

Arsenal has a hard time at St. Mary's too. Since Southampton has been promoted, Arsenal record there in the PL is 0W - 2L - 2D, with 3 goals scored and 9 goals conceded. Arsenal has lost and failed to score in their last 2 matches at St. Mary's

Well he's clearly nailed this game week. I think he's one of those players dependent on form and formation. As soon as Spurs switch back to 3 5 2 he's benched. Which they will in the bigger games. Next two they'll play 4 2 3 1 though.

I'm at a loss on what to do with my strikers this week because Kane is back. Have you got any advice for me?

So I've got Aguero (sou, MUN), Lukaku (BUR, whu) and Deeney (SWA, hul), all with good fixtures this round and Aguero > Ibra on the cards for next gw. But I am a bit scared to go without Kane.

Would you sell any of those for Kane this week? If I choose Deeney I also need to do another transfer for -4, for example Siggy > Zaha or Alonso > Bailly/Gibson.

People saying "so glad I used my chip on Aguero" - why? are you miles and miles ahead because of it? You got what? 27 points.

Basically any player who is tripled in a double just needs to keep a clean sheet or score once to match that.

Someone will. Picking who is hard. But someone will.

And whoever is on them is coming for you. I certainly wouldn't be crowing about how successful your previous triple was.

    Crucially, it wasn't.

I don't think they are actually happy about the result, just happy about not having to make a difficult decision now.

Where has this been? I haven't heard anyone saying who successful that TC was. (Honestly not being smart, it's a genuine question 🙂 ) I did that TC and while it wasn't the best, it wasn't too bad either. Better than a blank. The logic was sound and it just didn't go our way altogether, so we can't be too down about and say it was a rubbish TC

Okay maybe the word successful was misleading. Although I've seen a lot of comments from people not only saying the obvious "so glad don't have to make that decision" but also saying can't see anyone getting more than what Kun did.

That's what I was ranting about. Somebody certainly will. There will be goals somewhere.

I've seen no bragging, but if there has been it's because they're all happy they got any return compared to last year's disasters. 27 points is fine, not great, but fine. I was content with it, relieved mainly. Sure someone will get more with their triple captain points in the next few weeks - good luck to them. It's a total lottery, and hugely overstated on this site. It can help massively, sure, but it's a real roll of the dice. Bench boost a much better chip in my opinion, plainly because you have to tactically pick your DGW players and you have more chances to maximise points.

I am going to concentrate on Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City & Spurs players for GW37

The rest have crap fixtures and also these 4 teams have nice fixtures in GW38

        Pedro - Stones - Theo - Gabriel - Jesus - Big Willy

I'll concentrate on clubs captain, set pieces takers etc.. more guaranteed minutes. Pedro should be safe but all the others..

I wouldn't fall into the trap of getting players just because they have good doubles. Don't get me wrong, I'll get players from those teams too, but they have to show some form and they'll get in on merit. As it stands, for example, Sanchez is the only Arsenal player I''l have then. Defence is rubbish

It also totally dismisses the fact that form can sometimes trump fixture

So for those of us with TC chip left:

Ibra GW34 (No way, Man U don't score goals)

Sanchez GW36 (Not the best looking side atm and hard fixtures)

Sanchez GW37 (Much better fixtures, if they look sharp again)

Alli / Kane GW37 (Tough fixtures, but atm the best side in the league)

Hazard GW37 (Good fixtures, if Spurs keep the pressure up this is it)

    So either Alli/Kane/Hazard GW 37

Or the balls out crazy Sanchez GW37

Every other option is just really bad

Tadic 36, if Saints continue this form.

Nailed. On pens, all set pieces, shoots on sight.

Statistically he will likely get an assist across two matches. So he's essentially a guaranteed 21 points from the off.

Forgot about Kun (imagine, tells you how he's benn as an fpl asset this season)

        But yes Jesus might interfere

And Costa is an option too

Remember we only need to beat 7+2 points to be better off than the rest

Are both Hazard and Sanchez essential for GW37?.. Having used my WC trying to come up with a plan to have them both without taking major hits along the way, finding really really tough.

Doubt it. Chelsea need five more wins, and that falls in the middle of the double. I can see them drop points at United and Everton, and don't see Spurs dropping especially with Kane back.

Depends entirely upon Conte. Is he a manager that likes players to have an early wind down whilst giving bit part players a chance?...some do for sure. Does anybody know!

There's just no real coverage for him at the moment, Costa off form Pedro looks OK but isn't picking up point either. I did the stupid thing of not picking a Chelsea defender on my WC too.. So that could equal no Chelsea at all

    3. vectorman

I just wonder though of all the players he could rest at that time to trial some of the squad, Hazard is the one he won't.. I don't know why I think that, maybe because people are paying to see those top top players at the end of the season, is that a daft theory?. 😀
