This Much We Know – Gameweek 33

Unexpected shape-shifting from Wenger, surprise Swede-benching from Mourinho and a warning shot from Harry Kane. This, and more, occupy our thoughts as we continue to chew over Gameweek 33.

Mourinho’s mind games will keep us guessing…
Dropping Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the bench for the first time in the Premier League, Jose Mourinho’s Sunday teamsheet at home to Chelsea delivered the most unwelcome dose of uncertainty on the eve of Manchester United’s Double Gameweek 34.

It’s difficult to decipher the real impact of Jose’s selection, with confusion surrounding the logic behind it.

Initially suggesting that the veteran was tired after facing Anderlecht – a fact confirmed by the player himself – Mourinho backtracked post-match, declaring that his decision to play Marcus Rashford through the middle was no more than a tactical choice.

Regardless of the reasoning, the conflicting statements certainly raise doubt over Mourinho’s intentions from here on in.

Handed just eight minutes off the bench against the Blues, Ibrahimovic’s appeal as an armband option for the clashes against Burnley and Man City have arguably suffered a dent.

Frustratingly, Rashford took his chance and, in doing so, now justifies Mourinho handing him another opportunity before the season is out.

While his side are still pursuing Europa League glory, it’s clear that Mourinho’s teamsheets have the potential to seriously scupper our best-laid plans.

Arguably, a win for Anderlecht on Thursday would be the ideal solution.

That would leave United with the league campaign as their main focus and kill any doubts that Ibrahimovic, and the likes of Antonio Valencia, could be spared minutes at Turf Moor.

Wenger’s has taken everyone by surprise..
That chastening 3-0 loss at Palace clearly gave Arsene Wenger food for thought, with the Arsenal manager springing a surprise 3-4-2-1 set-up for last night’s win at Middlesbrough.

While the performance was far from emphatic, the Gunners did enough to suggest that they warrant a top billing ahead of their double Gameweeks 36 and 37.

Stationed in a central support role behind Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez ended a three-match barren streak to return to the top of the FPL standings, while Mesut Ozil’s winner took his tally to two goals and a pair of assists in four.

At the back, the Gunners have just two clean sheets in ten, but if they rediscover some resilience, Wenger’s three-man backline could yet promote the likes of Gabriel as a cut-price option for our second Wildcards nearer the doubles.

It remains to be seen if Wenger saw enough on Teesside to convince him to persist with his new set-up. However, he was clear on the intention – to inject some much-needed confidence back into his side.

Fantasy managers will welcome that: a motivated and free-flowing Arsenal over the run-in would be a gift.

Monday was progress, but there is still much work to be done before we can be confident in heavy Arsenal investment.

Firmino is a perfect pre-Wildcard punt…
A match-winner against West Brom on Sunday edged the Brazilian into fifth position amongst FPL midfielders. Quietly and efficiently, Firmino has filled the void left by the stricken Sadio Mane.

The former Hoffenheim man has now produced returns in six successive league outings, delivering three goals and four assists over that period.

Starting the season at 8.5, he remained relatively overlooked and boasts a season-high price of 8.8 – indeed, only 12% own him compared with team-mate Philippe Coutinho’s 22%.

Back-to-back clashes against Palace and Watford mean that Firmino could well be worth our short-term consideration, particularly for those then able to refresh with the wildcard in Gameweek 36.

…as is Arnautovic…
A goal and assist at home to Hull City delivered a 12-point return for the Stoke City wide man – his second double-figure haul from his last six league appearances.

Just like Liverpool’s Firmino, Arnautovic is blessed with a run of upcoming fixtures that could help maintain recent form. Owned by just 1% of managers, he’s now set to face Swansea City, West Ham and Bournemouth over the next three Gameweeks.

With our double Gameweek 34 midfield options appearing limited, those still wielding wildcards may well consider turning to the Austrian as an unlikely option.

Second only to Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min for shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, by ten to 13, and with the Potters safe and free to express themselves, Arnautovic could be in his element and in profit.

Maguire is finally delivering on his promise…
Back in the Hull City starting XI after recovering from a knee problem, the defender was unleashed from a right-back berth in the 3-1 loss at Stoke.

It’s fair to say that Maguire’s raids forward were a key ploy in the Tigers’ attacks. He had more touches in the final third than any team-mate and fired four shots on goal – more than any defender in the Gameweek – on his way to scoring for the second successive league appearance.

Those goals have been more than merited. Since nailing down a starting berth in Gameweek 15, Maguire has produced more shots and attempts in the box than any FPL defender.

Owned by just 0.5%, he entertains Watford and Sunderland in the next three as the Tigers look to extend their exceptional recent record at the KCOM Stadium, having won seven and drawn one of eight home matches since the arrival of Marco Silva.

Kane is in a punishing mood…
While almost 200,000 FPL managers ensured that they leapt upon Harry Kane’s potential ahead of his home encounter with Bournemouth, many others were left cursing their hesitation or lack of that spare Spurs slot.

The striker’s 12-point haul was not spectacular, but it was enough to see him established as the top points scorer among the ten most favoured captain picks and demonstrated again what a force he can be.

He will now go to Palace in Gameweek 34 with real momentum and it’s difficult to ignore his claims – not only for a place in our line-ups, but also the captaincy – even in a Gameweek where Zlatan Ibrahimovic will clearly be the major draw.

Lest we forget, Spurs and Kane have previous for spoiling the double Gameweek party. Only last season they delivered a major haul to punish those who sold on their asset in the pursuit of twin-fixture assets.

Palace will offer stubborn resistance and Kane boasts just one double-digit haul away from White Hart Lane all season. But the form and confidence being shown by Mauricio Pochettino’s men is intoxicating and could easily outshine Ibrahimovic’s contribution to Gameweek 34.

Benteke can steel Zaha’s thunder…
With Wilfried Zaha hoovering up new owners at pace via the fall-out from the out-of-sorts Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Benteke is struggling to keep pace.

Slots in our forward lines are so precious, it’s perhaps no surprise to see the Belgian lag behind his midfield team-mate but, based on Saturday’s events, it’s the striker who heads into the Palace double Gameweek as the man most likely to deliver.

Edging towards his unplayable best, Benteke has mustered 16 shots in the box over his past four Gameweeks, with his seven efforts on target returning goals in three of those matches.

Zaha’s threat is an unpredictable and potentially explosive option, but Benteke carries the most direct threat to the Liverpool and Spurs defences.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Will you get priced out if you don't do it now? If not, then wait. The 0.1 isn't worth the additional information you'll get by waiting.

if i was to get him it would be part of a sanchez removal... he seems close to falling. I have 0.2 to play with.

      sanchez barnes > zlatan zaha

I think you missed the Jags train. No doubles, with at West Ham and then home to Chelsea the next two weeks. I'd just stay away.

Im mostly tempted for the relative good fixtures with the exception of Chelsea since im without my WC. Even without doubles, hes still a playable 4th def compared to two boro defenders

I can do this TONIGHT for exact cash?

Same people would have told you not to bench him against Hull, where he blanked. Same with games against WHam, Swansea, Stoke, and Liverpool, where he also blanked. It happens. No guarantees in this game, though often with hindsight, people tend to act like there is. 🙂

Probably the right call. I am thinking of getting Bailly and Gibson in defence and going with this for 3 hits

              Pickford
              Bailly - Valencia - Gibson
              Zaha - Siggy - Lanzini - Alli
              Negredo - Zlatan - Kane

              Just my thinking anyway

Not at all. He SHOULD start both, they need to at least try to score goals, they play two soft defenses, and he's on pens.

The obvious rub is that it's not like they haven't been trying to score up to this point this season...they just simply can't/don't.

I'll have Ibra, Benteke and Lukaku, so I'm not going near, but if you are looking for a third striker, you could certainly do worse than him this week.

      For DW34 I have setup:

      Grant
      Ward, Valencia, Gibson
      Alli, Zaha, Siggy, DeRoon
      Lukaku, Ibra, Kane

      Valdes, King, Yoshida, Are

      1) Will Valdes be fit to play?
      2) Should I bench Siggy?

I agree with this. The thing is, de Roon has a guaranteed 4 points as opposed to 2 for Siggy and King on a bad day, but their potential is much higher, even with de Roon's extra game.

      2. Jay_
          7 years, 16 days ago

Just play Valdes if he don't play then Grant is there. Play King over deRoon easily. deRoon will be a handy first sub if Alli or Kane get injured in cup.

Agree, no groupthink pushing us definitively towards or away from any one player, plenty of good arguments in all directions, both for the transfers and the captaincy. Despite 2 FT's in the bank, am probably going to avoid Ibra, but picking the captain is tougher--Lukaku for now.

Asked this a couple of days ago and would like more opinions.

Would you do a Walker to PVA transfer? Walker could easily get benched after the FA cup weekend and PVA has 2 matches.

Hmm, tough, I'd still be surprised if PVA plays 60+ minutes in both matches, and I'd be even more surprised if Palace keep a clean sheet so you'd be relying on attacking returns only.

Would be a fun gamble though!

I hate Walker. Missed cleanies and now a rotation risk.

Would do it for free. Best thing about PVA is you get a good 35 and 37 out of him.

Arsenal will have to go for the win hard, and Leicester really know how to counter-attack. This gooner would not sell if he owned.

One good thing about getting Ibra in this week is that even if he sits out one of the double fixtures, you've got yourself a tasty captain for Swansea home in 35. If he does play both, just don't captain for Swansea.

Do you have all out attack? I'd go A and then be also tempted by Lorente > Negredo for -4, even without the chip. Both seem like differentials re: Mark

Very tough call in that scenario but I would say Eriksen, possibly Siggy but he could do damage this week.

...Or look at a Man Utd defensive double-up - Heaton > DDG or FM > Bailly.

If anyone is till up at this time I have a dilemma.

I have wild card, bench boost and triple captain available.

My head tells me I should wild card in week 36 and bring in all the double game week players for week 37. Then use bench boost in week 37 so I have all 15 players as double game week = mega points.

This means I will need to use my triple captain in a week that isn't those two. Which leaves me with...this coming week for TC Ibra..? Or maybe Sanchez in his Arsenal DGW.

                                Thoughts please? Thanks 🙂

Sanchez in 36 makes more sense than Ibra in 34, just remember if you do that, you'll have to wildcard in 35, not 36, as you can't play 2 chips in one week.

You mean WC for GW 36, right? Like as in using the wildcard while setting the lineup for GW 36?

Ah ok. I was more interested in possibly TC Alexis for GW 37 since he has easier fixtures.

If you don't have a bench boost then 37 is a million miles the better week to TC. City, Chelsea, Arsenal attackers could smash it.

I am in a similar situation to yourself (still have my all out attack as well) and was thinking similarly to yourself. I was planning on using my WC during GW 36 and bringing in all the DGW players for GW 37 so I can use the bench boost. Not too sure when I would use the all out attack, but I was thinking of triple captaining Lukaku this week against West Ham's shaky defense. Alexis during his DGW was also an option for me but I feel like the bench boost may be of better use for GW 37.

Think Pierce wrote about WC in 35, because 36 is a double too where you can TC Sanchez.

I did, though Sanchez doesn't inspire me with the confidence I would've had a few months ago. It's by no means a grand plan, more like the only reasonable option left if GW37 is reserved for BB.

For all we know, Benteke may end up being a better TC option this coming week, but I'd rather play 'safe' with Sanchez and hope he has some form by then.

I've got the same 3 chips... Going to use triple captain this DGW 34, brought in Zaha & Benteke with my 2 free transfers - just need to decide which one to TC... And will wild card in week 36, and bench boost in DGW 37.

Awesome thanks for all the options guys, maybe Sanchez is a better option but as you said I'd need to wild card a week earlier. So annoying you can use WC and a chip in the same week! Ibra could do well against Burnley and also loves a big game so the City game could bring him goals, I'm just worried about him being rested, also worried about Arsenal and Sanchez's lack of form

                                      Current team for 34

                                      Jaku
                                      Alonso Valencia Gibson
                                      Sigurdsson Son Alli Zaha
                                      Kun Lukaku(c) Kane

                                      Bench:Robles, De Roon, Kone, Yoshida

Read a lot on this website and saw the scoutcast and still can't decide whether to get in Ibra or not. Much hinges on the result on Thursday but I highly doubt we will see anything but a United win and in to the next round so I dont see any information gained from that front. Currently pondering on two options:
                                      A. Kun + Sigurdson --> Benteke + Hazard
                                      or
                                      B. Jakupovic + Sigurdson --> De gea + J.King
                                      or
                                      C. Just do Kun-->Ibra

Most likely doing Stephens to Gibson and Sterling to King or Arnoutovic for a hit. I'm keen for a pre wild card punt.

Next is to go Kun to Ibra for another hit.

                                          Thoughts?

                                          Alli / Sterling / Sigurdsson / Zaha
                                          Kun / Kane / Lukaku

                                          Heaton / Maguire / Stephens / T. Carroll

Got myself a bit of a benching headache.

                                                Alonso - Valencia - Chambers - Verthongen - Yoshida

                                                1FT, 0.5 ITB

If Alonso is fit and Boro's GK situation remains uncertain, I was thinking of Holgate -> Friend (assuming Fabio is out for the DGW). Who should I bench in order to accommodate a Boro defender?

Most likely, given that he came on for Fabio and that Barragan is generally seen as the weak link of the defence

I'd bench walker as you're playing Zaha.

Is it worth using ft to play Gibson over Holgate/Yoshida?

Options are a bit limited at that price. Could replace Gibson with PVA or a B'mouth defender perhaps to play in GW35, having Burnley (H) or Moyes Rejects (A) respectively
