Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Romelu Lukaku breaks his duck while Antonio Valencia sees red as Manchester United warm up for the forthcoming derby clash with a second successive victory.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart might be close to a loan move, but it is up front where West Ham need fresh blood as they are held to a goalless draw in their opening pre-season encounter.

Here are the notes from the latest matches.

Real Salt Lake 1 Manchester United 2

Romelu Lukaku opened his Manchester United account with the winner in an increasingly bad-tempered and mildly bizarre match in Utah.

The Belgian forward, with 45.2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, is currently the most popular player in the game and he latched on to a Henrikh Mkhitaryan pass to score before the break in United’s second pre-season match of the summer.

The lively Mkhitaryan had earlier equalised for the Red Devils – his second strike of the US tour – following good work by Jesse Lingard. The 8.0-priced Armenian is currently in fine form and, with just 3.2% ownership, is doing his best to plug his differential credentials ahead of United’s very kindly set of opening fixtures.

Lingard (6.0) is another who has so far impressed over United’s two fixtures.

A completely new line-up took to the pitch for the second-half – their opponents had already made the same move just 33 minutes into the encounter – but the visitors finished the match with just ten men when Antonio Valencia was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Salt Lake’s Sebastian Saucedo.

Even then, referee Allen Chapman gave Jose Mourinho the option to simply substitute Valencia as he didn’t want to brandish a red card in a friendly. But when Mourinho refused, Valencia was given his marching orders.

The clash grew increasingly spicy in the second half, with Juan Mata injured by a heavy challenge from Saucedo, and Matteo Darmian also limping off with a knock late on.

Mourinho played down the extent of both injuries post-match.

“Mata has a big ankle, but I hope it is nothing important. A few days, a week, probably. Darmian’s problem is not an important one.”

After utilising a back three in the win over LA Galaxy at the weekend, Mourinho opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, declaring pre-match that his players would be:

“…playing in different positions and thinking football in a different way and being organised in a different way. We are also going to play with four at the back.”

That gave new signing Victor Lindelof, already a popular pick with 17.2% FPL ownership, a chance to make his first start for the club, while Mkhitaryan and Lingard were employed just behind Lukaku up front.

Mourinho’s 11 changes at the break included Sergio Romero replacing Joel Pereira in goal, with David de Gea not involved.

United will face rivals City in the early hours of Friday morning.

Manchester United XI First half: J Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Lindelof, Jones, Blind; Carrick, Pogba, McTominay; Lingard, Mkhitaryan; Lukaku.

Manchester United XI Second half: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Darmian; Herrera, Fellaini, A Pereira; Mata (Mitchell 59), Martial (Tuanzebe 90); Rashford.

SK Sturm Graz II 0 West Ham United 0

Youngsters and new signings blooded, 22 players used and no-one injured – West Ham’s first run-out of the summer ticked a number of pre-season boxes.

Unfortunately, the ‘goals scored’ box wasn’t one of them as Slaven Bilic’s men drew a blank in Austria.

Bilic handed Pablo Zabaleta his Hammers debut at right-back in a 4-5-1 formation that had Ashley Fletcher as a lone striker supported by Andre Ayew from the left and Robert Snodgrass wide on the right.

Mark Noble returned following his recent operation on a long- standing abdominal injury to captain the first-half line-up and came close to breaking the deadlock with a late free-kick. Manuel Lanzini then took over set-piece duties after the interval.

The Argentinian midfielder is currently the most popular West Ham pick among Fantasy Premier League managers, his 7.0 price and attacking potential tempting 7.1% into early investment, and he had chances both from dead-ball situations and open play as the visitors pushed for a winner.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell took over the captain’s armband from Noble for the second half, while Spanish striker Toni Martinez replaced Fletcher up front, with Bilic’s striker options severely limited by injuries to Andy Carroll (hip) and Diafra Sakho (back).

That lack of depth among the forwards is one area Bilic has been keen to address in the transfer market, while the reported loan signing of England goalkeeper Joe Hart will at least provide plenty of competition at the other end of the pitch.

Michail Antonio (hamstring) and Winston Reid (knee) also played no part as they continue their recovery work, while Jose Fonte has been given extra time off after helping Portugal reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Bilic also revealed that midfielder Cheikou Kouyate suffered a setback in training, injuring his knee “in a very strange and awkward way”.

The Hammers face Fulham next on Thursday.

West Ham United XI: Adrian (Randolph 46); Zabaleta (Byram 46), Collins (Rice 46), Burke (Ogbonna 46), Masuaku (Cresswell 46); Noble (Cullen 46), Obiang (Makasi 46), Holland (Fernandes 46); Snodgrass (Lanzini 46), Ayew (Feghouli (46); Fletcher (Martinez 46).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

    Good to go?
    DDG | Myhill
Lindy Trippier Cedric Bertrand | 4m
Coutinho Alli Willian Zaha | Carroll
    Kun Lukaku | 4.5m

    0.5 left

Very nice. I think going without Kane at the start is a good strategy, but it would be good if you could save another 0.5 so you could upgrade EITHER of Kun or Kaku should the need arise. You might want to downgrade DDG to achieve this.

Could do Ddg + Trippier > Foster + Bailly, ensuring double utd defence

I'd keep Trippier as I think he's very good value. I'd go DDG to Foster and Cédric to Lindelöf (no need to 2x Saints defence, good fixtures notwithstanding).

Yeah I'm most nervous about Bernardo because of Pep and his rotation but I think he has the potential to be one of the best players in FPL this season, I was going to see how he goes in pre-season, I've still got 4 weeks to swap him out if needed...

Noticing a lot of Trippier love, nobody think the Spurs defence could be a bit suspect, especially at the start of the season with Wembley & no Walker etc...

Trippier looked really, really good when replacing Walker last season so I have no concerns about the Walker thing. The Wembley thing scares me a bit as while they were solid at home last season I think they only managed 4 clean sheets or so away last season... I will start with him and monitor the first few weeks and change if necessary

Now that Siggy is probably off and Puncheon is Palace captain I am considering rotating

    T. Carroll/Puncheon/Daniels

This would mean alternating between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3.

The fixtures look like this GW 1-21:

Confused as to why no one has Charlie Austin in their team, given the fixtures Southampton have. Seemed to be first choice when fit last year, and began to get his form back in the last six games with an attempt every 30mins and two goals. Surely a great option for third choice stirker?

    My thoughts on midfield options:

Arsenal: only Ramsey really interests me and even then not on day 1. Ozil and sanchez overpriced. Lacazette is enough Arsenal cover for me.

Chelsea: two defensive minded mids and rotation above. Hazard trolled me last season and even he is injured. Alonso enough Chelsea cover for me.

Liverpool: I am a Liverpool fan. So there are two ways to look at this. Either my insight is accurate as this team is the one I pour most time in trying to understand or I am falling into my perennial weakness of starting with too many from my favourite team. Either way I can't look past salah and mane. They will be the highest players up the pitch in a high scoring team. Liverpool will play Firmino deeper than them in an inside forward false 9 inside forward triangle. Coutinho is too deep to interest me from a fantasy perspective but with the Brazilians pulling the strings I expect most of liverpools fantasy points to go through the wingers. I sincerely hope most of you disagree with me 😉

Man city: too many options. A Fantasy minefield I will be avoiding at least until pep knows who his first choice team is. Expect endless rotation even then. No thanks.

Man u: tried the pogba thing last season. Not again. I put mki into the same category as Ramsey. Could be gold but not until I know his place is secure. First wildcard option.

Spurs: have to go with alli as I can't resist midfielders that high up the pitch. Eriksen and son interest me but Wembley means I won't overdo spurs to early on.

Others: t carrol was fantastic as a 5th mid for me last season. He is a bargain and I expect him to be more involved if ziggy moves on. Rlc is one to watch in pre season. Two 4.5 mids allows wonders at the back. The trend for me last season was my ranking shot up the more I invested in defence. Two playing 4.5 mids allows flexibility in formation. I can go 3 5 2 , 4 4 2, 5 3 2 quite comfortably in my current draft depending on fixtures. Another ranking booster I discovered last year was hAvington 15 playING fantsy assets nto jus 11.

    Thoughts?

As a pool fan, thoughts on milner?

I agree 2 4.5m mids offers a lot of options and surely one of them will turn into mahrez

Miner is first choice even if we sign Robertson who is replacing more no. Penalties, wing back. Might be highest scoring defender this season. That's my 3rd liverpool spot 🙂

That's quite an assumption considering 1- what a liability milner is at left back. 2 - Liverpool don't play with wing backs. 3 - Robertson is pretty bloody good.

Wing back is a player style and doesn't require 3 at the back (as it appears you're implying).

Liverpool's width totally comes through their WING BACKS who play out wide alone - wing backs.

But Robertson is a class act with a hammer of a left boot

Liverpool play 4 3 3 with a narrow middle three and width provided by the full backs. I would be very interested to see some crossing/chances created stats because I think miner compares to wingbacks hence my "wingback" comment. For me liverpools fullbacks become wingback in transition as the holding mid drops into a back 3 on attack. It is a fair comment for the way we play. You can argue with me about Robertson who I am happy to sign and is good but I am very confident miner starts at left back and I don't mind being disagreed with here. But I have a good memory and I suspect we will cross swords on this subject again ,)

      Mainly agree but
Willian for 7m with Hazard out is good for me
Mane only Liv mid who interest me
      Tadic is a great price
Man City. Agree to wait for pre season but Sane/ KDB will be in my team ( no MC forward)

    Repost

    nother Look at 5 3 2
    Bergovic (Elliot)
    Rudiger Kompany Trippier Cedric Bailly
    Sanchez Alli KDB Coutinho (Puncheon)
    Aguero Gayle (Ayew)

    Thought Process:
Tried to get Sanchez in as an alternative . (I know the dangers)
Wanted 5 at the back and swapped Alonso for Rudiger.
    Keeping away from template.
Hoping Kaku has a quiet time.
Punts are gayle who I have always liked.
Staying clear of RLC when I found out Puncheon made captain.
I have 2 Captain options and I think City will fly this year.
Want milner but not sure who to sacrifice.
I want bench back up early on.

Usually divide up funds a lot more but I'm liking this, feedback appreciated:

    Foster (Elliot)
Trippier | Cedric | Valencia (Yedlin, Long)
Tadic | Willian | Coutinho | RLC (Carroll)
    Kane | Jesus | Lukaku

Big hitters from spurs, united, city, liverpool.
Two decent Southampton players for the good run of fixtures.
Weak midfield (RLC) and non playing Long probably only drawbacks.

Morning everyone, right so think I've narrowed down my tinkering to two main drafts. Which will be decided by the outcome of all of the transfer sagas.

Which does everyone prefer out of these 2 for the time being?

    1) 4-3-3

    Foster,
    Alonso, Lindelof, Mee, Daniels
    Sanchez, Ritchie/Knockaert, Cout/Salah
    Kane, Jesus, Gayle/Austin

    Myhill, RLC, T. Carroll, Cranie

    2) 3-4-3

    Foster,
    Alonso, Cedric, Daniels
    KDB, RLC, Ramsey, Mane
    Kane, Lukaku, Gayle/Austin

    Myhill, Mee, T. Carroll, Cranie

    Thanks all!
