Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Romelu Lukaku breaks his duck while Antonio Valencia sees red as Manchester United warm up for the forthcoming derby clash with a second successive victory.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart might be close to a loan move, but it is up front where West Ham need fresh blood as they are held to a goalless draw in their opening pre-season encounter.

Here are the notes from the latest matches.

Real Salt Lake 1 Manchester United 2

Romelu Lukaku opened his Manchester United account with the winner in an increasingly bad-tempered and mildly bizarre match in Utah.

The Belgian forward, with 45.2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, is currently the most popular player in the game and he latched on to a Henrikh Mkhitaryan pass to score before the break in United’s second pre-season match of the summer.

The lively Mkhitaryan had earlier equalised for the Red Devils – his second strike of the US tour – following good work by Jesse Lingard. The 8.0-priced Armenian is currently in fine form and, with just 3.2% ownership, is doing his best to plug his differential credentials ahead of United’s very kindly set of opening fixtures.

Lingard (6.0) is another who has so far impressed over United’s two fixtures.

A completely new line-up took to the pitch for the second-half – their opponents had already made the same move just 33 minutes into the encounter – but the visitors finished the match with just ten men when Antonio Valencia was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Salt Lake’s Sebastian Saucedo.

Even then, referee Allen Chapman gave Jose Mourinho the option to simply substitute Valencia as he didn’t want to brandish a red card in a friendly. But when Mourinho refused, Valencia was given his marching orders.

The clash grew increasingly spicy in the second half, with Juan Mata injured by a heavy challenge from Saucedo, and Matteo Darmian also limping off with a knock late on.

Mourinho played down the extent of both injuries post-match.

“Mata has a big ankle, but I hope it is nothing important. A few days, a week, probably. Darmian’s problem is not an important one.”

After utilising a back three in the win over LA Galaxy at the weekend, Mourinho opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, declaring pre-match that his players would be:

“…playing in different positions and thinking football in a different way and being organised in a different way. We are also going to play with four at the back.”

That gave new signing Victor Lindelof, already a popular pick with 17.2% FPL ownership, a chance to make his first start for the club, while Mkhitaryan and Lingard were employed just behind Lukaku up front.

Mourinho’s 11 changes at the break included Sergio Romero replacing Joel Pereira in goal, with David de Gea not involved.

United will face rivals City in the early hours of Friday morning.

Manchester United XI First half: J Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Lindelof, Jones, Blind; Carrick, Pogba, McTominay; Lingard, Mkhitaryan; Lukaku.

Manchester United XI Second half: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Darmian; Herrera, Fellaini, A Pereira; Mata (Mitchell 59), Martial (Tuanzebe 90); Rashford.

SK Sturm Graz II 0 West Ham United 0

Youngsters and new signings blooded, 22 players used and no-one injured – West Ham’s first run-out of the summer ticked a number of pre-season boxes.

Unfortunately, the ‘goals scored’ box wasn’t one of them as Slaven Bilic’s men drew a blank in Austria.

Bilic handed Pablo Zabaleta his Hammers debut at right-back in a 4-5-1 formation that had Ashley Fletcher as a lone striker supported by Andre Ayew from the left and Robert Snodgrass wide on the right.

Mark Noble returned following his recent operation on a long- standing abdominal injury to captain the first-half line-up and came close to breaking the deadlock with a late free-kick. Manuel Lanzini then took over set-piece duties after the interval.

The Argentinian midfielder is currently the most popular West Ham pick among Fantasy Premier League managers, his 7.0 price and attacking potential tempting 7.1% into early investment, and he had chances both from dead-ball situations and open play as the visitors pushed for a winner.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell took over the captain’s armband from Noble for the second half, while Spanish striker Toni Martinez replaced Fletcher up front, with Bilic’s striker options severely limited by injuries to Andy Carroll (hip) and Diafra Sakho (back).

That lack of depth among the forwards is one area Bilic has been keen to address in the transfer market, while the reported loan signing of England goalkeeper Joe Hart will at least provide plenty of competition at the other end of the pitch.

Michail Antonio (hamstring) and Winston Reid (knee) also played no part as they continue their recovery work, while Jose Fonte has been given extra time off after helping Portugal reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Bilic also revealed that midfielder Cheikou Kouyate suffered a setback in training, injuring his knee “in a very strange and awkward way”.

The Hammers face Fulham next on Thursday.

West Ham United XI: Adrian (Randolph 46); Zabaleta (Byram 46), Collins (Rice 46), Burke (Ogbonna 46), Masuaku (Cresswell 46); Noble (Cullen 46), Obiang (Makasi 46), Holland (Fernandes 46); Snodgrass (Lanzini 46), Ayew (Feghouli (46); Fletcher (Martinez 46).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

I want Dawson and I want Foster. I don't really want to double up on WBA defence though, so a couple of questions...

1: 5.0 alternatives to Dawson (not Cedric though, already have him)?
2: 4.5 alternative to Foster? I'm on Hennessy at the moment.

3-4-3 allows him to play his more natural game i.e. getting into the opposition box. Was very effective in that role a few years back for Arsena, last summer for Wales, and again towards the tail end of the season with Arsenal. Wenger building Arsenal around Ozil has been very detrimental to Ramsey's game time and attacking potential, but a lot of Arsenal fans (including myself) believe the 3-4-3 will allow both players to flourish in their natural roles.

I think/hope so, yeah. He's currently in my draft team anyway.

Arsenal were on fire last May with Ramsey playing box-to-box in a 3-4-3, and I don't see why Wenger wouldn't start the new season with broadly the same system and lineup that performed so well in these matches:

          - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/may/19/arsenal-everton-match-preview

Ramsey scored in both those games.

A differential approach to manage budget with maximizing set piece takers in Midfield.

    DEF & FWD: Heavy-hitters
MID: 1 Heavy-hitter with 2-3 set-piece hoggers from smaller teams.

    Something like:
    GK: Foster / Elliot
    DEF: MILNER / Trippier / Cedric / Daniels (4.5)
MID: Alli / RITCHIE / MOOY / MILIVOJEVIC (CARROLL)
    ATT: KANE LUKAKU LACAZETTE

Did anyone watch any games in the Premier League last season?

The wingbacks essentially play as wingers when attacking, doesn't matter how suspect their defending is- look at them as wingers that pick up full clean sheet points and cost 6.0-7.0.

Can't understand why someone would take Sane over Walker, Fabregas/Pedro over Alonso, Ramsey over Kolasinac, Pogba over Valencia etc.

Not to mention Zaha, Tadic, Ritchie and all the others.

I really believe the wing-backs are over hyped. You're telling me you would rather hope for the odd goal or assist from Walker and a clean sheet from City's shaky defence over Sane playing in a front 3? Insanity!

        6 years, 10 months ago

Overhyped? Do you see how far forward they play? How involved they are in the attack? For price per million, I reckon they're leagues ahead of others.

With Sane, I just feel he won't play every game and get all the mins people are predicting, there are too many City attackers. But yeah, there's definitely an argument with him. The others though...

Who will be nailed though at GW1? No points if they don't play

Chelsea are looking at a new LWB and RWB
Man Utd are looking at Aurier which puts Valencia at threat and noone knows who will play LB/LWB
Arsenal - Kolasinac looks nailed, but Ox and Bellerin are fighting for RWB and Ox not an option as classified as a midfielder
      Milner under threat from Robertson
City are a potential, but they don't keep clean sheets (Walker and Mendy)
Spurs have Trippier and Rose, but will they keep clean sheets at Wembley?
Coleman is injured and Baines is old and not necessarily on penalties now (with Rooney back and Siggy may be coming).

So much uncertainty. That is why Cedric / Bertrand, Daniels, Kolasinac look good options. Trippier and Lindelof at their prices too.

Admittedly we don't know who's going to play GW1, but that can be said about all teams- as it gets closer we'll have more information and cant adjust accordingly.

But my main point was that I'm seeing RMTs with 6.5 and 7.0 mids that I can't see outscoring 6.0-7.0 defenders.

I can definitely understand it... I would much rather have Sane/Willian and a 4.5 defender over Walker/Alonso and a 5.0/4.5 midfielder.

Appeals more to me. I for one would not want to rely on a 4.5/5.0 midfielder to get me points, whereas I'm happy to play a 4.5 defender and hope for a cleansheet/the odd attacking return 🙂

Yeah but you'd never play your bench- or it'd be Cork/RLC who a lot are putting in their starting elevens... fair enough though.

I don't think you can simple view them as OOP midfielders who have the luxury of getting 3 extra points for a clean sheet. Yes they bomb forward, but they're so much more unlikely to get the goals/assists. Plus they lose those 3 points when they concede, which makes them an added risk.

Added risk? Rather than never gaining them?

But they are OOP, for their price they offer more points per million than plenty of other players. All they need is an assist and a clean sheet to haul- in a team like Chelsea or Spurs, they're going to rack up clean sheets and get assists now and again, that's huge value for 6.5/7.0.

Completely agree. By added risk I mean that they need that combination of both a clean sheet and an assist/goal to get decent points, which is quite unlikely. They're definitely better value than the 7m and below midfielders, but I think saying that Walker > Sane is going a bit far!

Nevertheless, I'm definitely going 442 in order to fit a wing-back in!

    What's your thoughts on this 3-4-3 / 4-3-3 formation ?

    Foster l Fabianski
    Cedric l Trippier l Bertrand l Francis l Rosenior
    KDB l Alli l Coutinho l Puncheon l TCarroll
    Lukaku l Lacazette l Gayle

    I would be rotating Francis/Puncheon/TCarroll.

Yes. Question marks over all of them. Change Bertrand to Cedric and Rangel to Naughton? Maybe RLC to Carroll.

I like it, very similar to mine, I wouldn't worry about the bench just yet.
Only not sure on how Ramsey is going to perform, I know he's the only reasonably priced Arse mid though

Lacazette is the biggest unknown factor, so probably him. If he starts firing you could switch out any of the other 3 for him.

Looks good. Personally, would have Willian over Ramsey, and Defoe over Firmino. But both are 50/50 decisions probably.
