The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

My first draft for the new season, haven't decided on my 4.5 keeper yet and need to look into the rotation of my 4.5 defenders.

    Hart
    Alonso, Trippier, Daniels
    Alli, Coutinho, Redmond, Loftus-Cheek
    Kane, Lacazette, Chicharito

    Elliot, Fraser, Naughton, Suttner

I know midfield seems a bit light but I like the flexibility I have with this team. Can switch between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3, depending on fixtures.

Would try to fit in KDB for Alli. With the Wembley factor and City's explosive attack, I dont like Spurs doubble up.

Would go Carroll over RLC (T.C. is nailed and on some set pieces).

A switch to 442 (chicha - 4.5) would allow you to upgrade Redmond and Fraser to Zaha and Willian. Dont like that midfield as is.

Lukaku over Laca would also be a priority of mine. Dont like unproven players

Coutinho (might leave) Chica, Laca, Fake Henry, RLC is too risky to depend on

    A 3-4-3

    Foster (Elliot)
    Yoshida/ Daniels/ Danilo/ 4m / 4m
    Alli / Willian/ Zaha /De Bruyne (T Carroll )
    Kane/ Jesus/ Chicarito

    B 4-4-2

    DDG (Elliot)
    Yoshida/ Daniels/ Danilo/ Trippier / 4m

As a city fan - I think he will. If he's not then quick swap to get lukaku in. 5.5m defender to 4.5m defender maybe and lukaku in.

Or whoever pep favours in midfield - downgrade KDB to them and upgrade..

    What do you think...

    Foster (Hart)
    Alonso, Stones, Ake (Lowton, Rangel)
De Bruyne, Alli, Salah, Walcott, Milivojevic
    Lukaku, Rooney (Crouch)

Last two seasons, Salah has averaged a goal ever two games, he's going to be savage this season.

Walcott hit two the other day, always starts the season well.

Rooney is a risk, but it's a world cup year, and he'll have a starring role at Everton. If there is one thing he lacked at United over the last season or two was game time.

Stones - will probably trade him for Trippier once the season kicks in. Just don't like Spurs fixtures, Wembley factor, and their pre season form to start with him.

      Frontline is aids.

      Stones is a rotation risk.

Zaha, Willian and Ramsey are all miles ahead Walcott as a pick for 0.5m less.

Once Pedro and Hazard are fit, Willian will not be a guaranteed starter. Plus, the lad has never been prolific. Awful fantasy pick imo

Oh I forgot that Walcott is a guaranteed starter. Come on dude.
There is a reason why Willian is discussed as one of the best value players in the beginning of the season. Sure, he can get rotated after a few weeks but Walcott will struggle to start a single game. I dare you to find a single person on here that would agree that Theo is a better pick than Willian.

Willian is pretty much guaranteed starter för at least three gameweeks. Walcott is not!

Have you seen Evertons fixtures? Rooney as your second forward with a start like that and Milivojevic and Walcott in your starting 11?

I'm with you on the Mids against Forwards theory though. It's been like that ever since I started playing, but your Mids are weak, IMHO.

Forever Mirin are right about Stones too, I'm afraid.

Whether it's Spurs' underwhelming pre-season returns, the Wembley factor or just the price, which category do you currently fall into?

    A. Harry Kane is in your team
    B. You had Kane but no longer do - you have Spurs midfield cover

    Few thoughts from me...

    1) I think going with Austin is sensible. He looks nailed, he's scoring, got the fixtures and can easily be downgraded, upgraded.
    2) Salah just looks too good to turn down.
    3) Wing-backs are going to be ruddy powerful this season. Alonso last year was just the start.

I reckon Milner will be gold. If Robertson plays left back, Milner will likely be moved into midfield. Lad is an engine and Klopp loves him. Had he been classified as defender last year he would have had an extra 30 odd points from cleansheets and possibly additional bonus.

Just curious, but why 4 defenders if you're going to neglect Alonso and Milner who will be ablsolute gold. Midfielders have always been the prolific in this game. In fact if you look at the points total of the top 5 strikers this year, 2 of them (Firmino and King) were classfied as midfielders last year.

3-5-2 is the way to go. And add Alonso and Milner to the mix and it's like playing 1-7-2

with 3 big hitters up front it unbalances your team overall

Midfield needs something better than Tadic

Very difficult to get a balanced team with those three upfront.

JWP might be one. Have been considering him.
Darmian looking more likely but will continue to monitor
I don't like Tadic pick either really a fixture pick.

Anyone got any thoughts on having a midfield with Theo/Ramsey and fabragas in? Think they look a great price and seem to be overlooked?

Willian and Zaha generally considered better value and more nailed

Totally agree with zaha comment. Just think fab is a good differential than willian! I ain't seen much from Ramsey and worried about Theo in my team cause he is hit and miss

fabregas is interesting given he has played preseason and bakayoko hasn't but still a rotation risk wouldn't really want to start the season with someone like that unless bakayoko is ruled out due to injury

What do people think of this 442? Seems pretty well balanced to me:

    DDG (Elliott)

    Kompany kolasinac Trippier Hegazi (Hunemeier)

    Zaha Eriksen KDB Willian (Carroll)

    Lacazette Lukaku (McBurnie)

Plan would likely be to Downgrade Willian to one of the 6-6.5 mob that start well and upgrade Hegazi to Cedric

is lacazette worth 10.5 at the start ? given he may need time to adopt to the league

I think he'll start well but really it's anyone's guess

arsenal do have decent fixtures and sanchez does seem a bit too expensive but so is Kane \O/ (for a reason)

For that money I would rather go with a proven striker to start season

still a bit risky with city though with rotation except kdb perhaps

I dont like taking the risk unless the player is absolutely world class.
He is nailed, and has pens to fall back on though.

you think he's worldclass ? haven't seen him play but he does has a good record and i would think if wenger splashed such cash on him he must be half decent atleast

To clarify, I do NOT think he is world class.
Have not seen him enough to give a super detailed analysis of his qualities though. But like you said, should be a good player.

Ok ok so with all this 433 talk I made a quick template to check it out ... Not to shabby at all I must say so myself.

    Ddg
    Trippier Bertrand Daniels Monreal
    Kdb Pogba Willan
    Kane Lukaku Chicharito

    Elliot Carroll Rlc Rangel

Cant fault it. Very good team.
If Cedric looks fit to start the season I would downgrade Bertrand to afford Kolasniac over Monreal though.

Someone who more or less knows what they're talking about-- is stones nailed? I hear people saying he's a rotation risk but I don't see why he would be...

If they play 3-5-2 he is pretty much nailed. But Pep said he will alternate formations.
IIRC Pep seemed to prefer Kompany and Otamendi last yr. Or at least liked to alternate between Otamendi and Stones to partner Kompany.
Dont think we have any current information to indicate Stones will keep Otamendi out of the team permanently.

Fair enough. Guess I had just assumed they'd be playing 3 atb

I think Stones will flourish alongside Kompany. He has the skill and ability, but he needs a wise head alongside him.

Can anyone tell me some improvements/tips for my team. Also RMT

    Foster/Fabianski
    Tripier - Ake - Tomkins - Britos - Malone
    Eriksen - DeBruyne - Pogba - Redmond - RLC
    Jesus - Lukaku - Austin

    Thanks

Does anyone think it matters if the squad is imbalanced re home and away? For example my first squad had 10 home and 5 away!

I would prefer to have a certain balance but would never avoid picking a player based on that.
Chances are it will even out over the season anyway.
