The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Forster
    Dawson - Trippier - Matip
Alli - De Bruyne - Mane - Tadic
    Kane (C) - Rashford - Austin

    (Elliot - Carroll - Mee - Hunemier).

    Too risky going without Lukaku?

This isn't far off mine - currently liking the idea of Kane + two cheaper forwards, but comes down to rotation risk for both.

Yeh, it's a risk going without Lukaku but just trying to squeeze in an extra heavy hitting mid. Hopefully Rashford sort of mitigates the risk and if he can match Lukaku I might win out. I suppose it's the ownership and captaincy too. I think it's worth it though

I like it, Rashford is a difficult one though. I would personally say Lukaku is essential..

Yep he's looking good in pre season too I think. It's just the price difference and what I can do with that extra 4m. Still think Rashford compares well with the other similarly priced forwards (benteke, Rooney etc) as he's playing in a better team.

Rash to risky to start with, easier to add him in e.g. downgrade Lukaku than find the 4m upgrade+transfers etc

Lukaku huge ownership and likely CAP GW's 1&2 so could be a disastrous start if he fires 'em in

Balance is the name of the game.

    De Gea
    Trippier Yoshida Daniels Dawson
    KDB Salah Zaha Willian
    Lukaku Kane

    Elliot TC Hunemeier McBurnie

Thoughts? Might downgrade Dawson to give myself 2x 4.5 rotation and more bench.

Im deffo looking at Hegazi if he nails his place. 4.5 and playing for Pulis at the end of the day. Think they rotate well with Swansea but not sure. Have to look into it.

They rotate very well with Burnley as you can see.

BOU WBA STO PAL WHA HUD WAT

Would love a Dawson/Lowton rotation if I could have the same faith in Pulis and WBAs defensive prospects for this season.

I think with his attacking threat you could play Dawson every game. Only arsenal Gw 6 looks too tough and Carroll could fill in for that one. Overall it's a good balanced team.

      MartinaWilliamsKeaneBaines
      Schneiderlin Gueye
      Klaas/Ram Roo Sig/Mirallas
      Roo/Ram

Klaassen can play deeper so one of gueye/schneiderlin could be at risk and could switch to a 4141

Okay, had a little fiddle (easy now). New RMT if you would be so kind, gents (and ladies). Lindelof is out, and I'm not really keen on any of United's defenders, but the fixtures are ok, so DDG is in. That means Hünemeier to make up the difference. Both Newcastle options are hobbling, so Ake is in. Also swapped Alli for Eriksen, as the gut was rumbling. Willian's had a solid pre-season, Kane could be downgraded if he's off the boil, and that lets me stick anyone in. Only worry is that my defence is a bit sparse...

    DDG
    Trippier, Yoshida, Ake
    Eriksen, Willian, Zaha, KDB, Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku, Kane, Crouch
    (Elliot, Rangel, Hünemeier, Crouch)

    Thoughts?

Good team but very vulnerable bench. Eriksen - Salah/Cout and Crouch - Quaner would allow you to upgrade both 4.0 defs.
Carroll (nailed + some set pieces) is also a better pick than RLC (not nailed).

Yeah, it's causing me some anxiety. Holding off on Coutinho to see if there are any developments re Barca. Otherwise I'll try to shoehorn him in.

Great shout on Crouchy and Carroll, although Pete's robot dance alone is putting him head and shoulders above everyone else...

      Very solid.
Some uncertainty over Austin of course (but you know that).
4.0 - Suttner could be a decent use of spare funds. Set piece specialist apparently (decent amt. of goals+assist last year in Bundesliga)

You are probably aware (but will mention it anyway) that most prefer Willian over Cesc on here. Just due to assured starts over the first few GWs

Thanks. I'm hoping Gabbi as part of the 3 and Austin starting together in the most recent friendly is a sign of things to come. I know its risky, but the way Cesc finished the season I think he will start the season. Bakayoko will wait for his turn I think, and when Cesc plays he delivers.

You do realise Koeman left Southampton at the end of 2015/16.

Austin is in a ton of RMT's while i've yet to se Gabbi in a single one. Take from that what you will.
Not that the herd mentality is always right, but it could be a decent indicator of the better choice.

Seeing how spurs always start slow and know there at wembley is it essental to have kane and ali??? Or could you get away with just ali and use the kane cash more wisely???

He's on his way out, so no for me. Has to be Bertrand/Yoshi at this stage.

I'm on Bertrand and JWP for now. Gayle is my third striker but I wouldn't be against starting Austin over him.

No , double up with one defender + attacking from GW1. Leaves you with flexibility to assess starting line-up and jump on any in-form attacking player as your 3rd.

    4. Slam

      Bertrand and Yoshida for now.
I will monitor the who starts GW1 and how they play and then bring an attacker GW2 based on that information

Why is Danilo 5.5 with Mendy and Walker at 6.5? Am I missing something? I assume Dan would compete with Sane for LWB in 3-5-2 however...

Mendy and Walker expected to be the starting defenders. Danilo back up. Mendy injured for the start of the season so Danilo should play for a couple of games.

Pretty positive than Mendy is a right footed right back?

You would be incorrect. He's a left footed left back and will start over Danilo when fit.

    RMT

    De Gea
    Trippier Kolasinac Walker Daniels Bertrand
    KDB Eriksen WP
    Lukaku Jesus

    Elliot Abraham Mesa Carroll

btw anyone picks ake over daniels? I am considering this move because actually Ake gained more pts than Daniels during the time he started in Bournemouth last year.

Mane (9.5), expensive but fit again and low ownership (5%).
With a new equally speedy sidekick in Mo Salah.
Will need to swap him out at Xmas time for the AFCON.
