The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

What does anyone think about Jacob Murphy of Newcastle as a differential at 5.5M?

I'm thinking of upgrading two 4.5M midfielders so:

    A. Alli - Carroll - RLC

    or

    B. Willian - Knockaert - Murphy

..alongside KDB and Tadic in midfield

This would mean no Kane or Alli.....

May be but too inconsistent for me to have a punt. & All of them will get game time I think, would assume they will be rotated in terms of there positions and Klopp will decide which will come off at about 70 minute on each game basis!

    Hart, Foster
    Dann, Daniels, Trippier, Pied, Yedlin
    Coutinho, Alli, Willian, JWP, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Chicharito

Do I desperately need Arsenal cover? They just don't convince me.

Defence is weak and so is your bench. Hart & Chica's opening fixtures wont do a lot to help either

I'd tighten up with a Man Utd defender and try to get KDB in for Coutinho

Most are dropping Cedric due to lack of pre-season.

I generally pick the proven PL (and FPL) player if the decision is close.
And one could argue that even though Salah is clear first choice, he's slightly more likely to be rotated than Cout.

      1. Ramboros
        • 12 Years

My worry about Coutinho is that he is clearly very injury prone. Injury prone players don't handle fixture congestion well, which means either injuries or rotation.

Peps project, can play across the front 3, young improving talent. He had a brilliant ppm average last season. He was one of the first names on my team sheet this year, think he is a brilliant pick priced well.

Views on this team, liking it as a 4-4-2, very strong imo.

    Begovic
    Alonso Kolasinac Bertrand Danilo
    KDB Coutinho Zaha Ince
    Lukaku Jesus

    Elliot Suttner T. Carroll Quaner.

    Any weaknesses?

You are probably aware of these but:
      - No spurs attack
      - Danilo rotation risk sooner rather than later (Mendy only out for a few weeks)
      - Ince is obviously unproven (personally avoid promoted players to start the season )

      But very solid team.

Too inflexible to aquire bandwagon cheap midfielders. Mahrez, King, Capoue, Michu, Ramsey...it always happens.

  14. Jedi_Reed

I've been jumping between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 for the last few days.

The main benefit I keep coming back to with 4-3-3, is that I rate the premium defenders in the 6-6.5 bracket, much higher than their midfield equivalent.

However, in a 3-4-3, I have more confidence in 4.5 defenders bringing in points with a good rotation, than the likes of RLC, Chabolah and Tarroll.

Also, 3-4-3 seems to offer a better pricing structure. Easier to jump on early bandwagons for 4th midfielders, who gain in price quickly.

At the moment, I'm on a 4-3-3. I know this has been discussed at great length already, but I'm interested to hear what factors are swaying people to one system, or another?

    1. Random Name
      • 8 Years

3-4-3 mainly for the reason you outlined yourself - it's a much better structure and if done right will almost certainly get you more pts than a 4-3-3

Morata, Defoe, Sane all wait and sees for me, defence is shit too, think it's risky to go in with 2 4.0m defenders. No way is Defoe worth 2m more than a Jrod type either. That's like Ramsey - Coutinho sort of price difference.
