Development Squad – Heatmaps Preview

Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

    RMT please:

    DDG (Elliot)

Dawson - Kolasinac - Bertrand (Rangel - Rosenior)

Willian - Alli - Pogba - Zaha (Carroll)

    Defoe - Lacazette - Lukaku

Don't have City attack because I don't trust Pep. Don't have Liverpool attack because I cant seem to fit them in my team. What do you guys think?

2 4.0 defenders is a big risk as if one of your defenders gets injured you're playing the week with 10 men

Any thoughts? DDG is purely to hold the 1.0m itb to bring in one of Kane/Chicharito/Pogba if one of them starts well. Gone with Mounie as feel he's a better option than Ince + better value in 7.0 mids than 7.0 strikers!

    DDG Elliot
    Alonso Trippier Yoshida Suttner 4.0
    KDB Eriksen Willian Carroll Cork
    Aguero Lukaku Mounie

    Cheers!

Who's the best 4,5m defender? I already have Ben Mee and am looking for another one.

Is Francis nailed? If so, I guess he's the best option if you take fixtures into consideration.

Yedlin and Lascelles look tempting as well but I have Elliot so duoblin on Newcastle defence doesn't seem right.

Simpson adn Morgan have very tough fixtures. Brighton defenders are wort considering perhaps? Who'd be your punt?

Dunk is some idea but I'm worried by the fact he's been given lot of cards last season. Now with better attackers he might find defending even harder and he might be given more cards than the season before

Francis not nailed., although Doosra would dispute this
Newcastle defender + Elliot doesn't count as doubling up if you have another first choice keeper, so good options
Brighton defenders Suttner and Dunk apparently good choices, in quite a few teams. Don't know if Simpson or Morgan are sure starters

Only planning for first 3 weeks, WC in GW4 so Fab and Willian should be fine, as should Danilo but need to keep an eye on the latter. Austin could become Gayle if his place looks rotation prone still.

Lads, lets clear some things that can help many people here imho.

    1) Cedric vs Yoshida
    2) Jay Rodriguez, yay or nay
    3) Stones vs Otamendi
    4) Tadic vs Redmond
    5) Tadic + Gayle vs Ritchi + JRod + 1mil.
this last 1 is for me...

My votes go for: Cedric, yay, Otamendi, Tadic, tadic+gayle.

      1) Cedric probably wont start due to confederations cup so Yoshida
      2) Nay. You can get a premium defender for that price that will in the long run get more points
      3) Man city cb is risky with Pep. Sometimes 2 cbs sometimes 3cbs. If 2 cbs it could easily be Kompany and Stones.
      4) Tadic
      5) Neither

I've searched many sites and nobody had the goal involvement stats for Newcastle players. I think this is one of the best stats out there, because it shows you how important a player is to their team.

I manually went through each game for both Ritchie and Gayle to work out their goal involvement.

    The formula is:

goals team scored while player is on pitch / goals player is involved in = goal involvement

    Matt Ritchie

    Goals involved in: 20
Goals Newcastle scored while on the pitch: 70

    Goal involvement: 0.29

    Dwight Gayle

    Goals involved in: 25
Goals Newcastle scored while on the pitch: 42

    Goal involvement: 0.60

Thinking Ritchie is a great enabler for the big hitters, if not going Gross or Fraser
