Development Squad – Heatmaps Preview

Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

    Alexis Sanchez

How many are planning major surgery if he stays and plays? Head and shoulders above the rest last season, albeit a lot of his success playing as central attack. Is 12.0 too much to justify his selection? Will you risk him hauling?

I'm not planning to build my GW1 side around Alexis, even if he does stay. I think he's best left as a wait-and-see option right now - a lot will depend on how he meshes with Lacazette, and the distribution of shots and space between the two players.

He should play a bit deeper with Lacazette in the team.
      He's quality, but super expensive.
      Not in my GW1 team.

Has he signed yet? Depending on size of fee, he's surely nailed. I imagine Mahrez will go and he is a non like for like replacement, meaning we could have Gray, Iheanacho and Vardy all nailed!

How nailed do we think Danilo is for the start of the season given Mendy's injury? I know he'd be more of a bench warmer otherwise

I see plenty of posts suggesting "too much spend in defense" with Alonso, Kola picks.

I disagree, this year full backs where the bacons are imo.

Is martina nailed for everton for along as colemans out? A combo of Dann Martina and Mee gets me:

    HUD (Dann)
    WB (mee)
    SWA (dann)
    burn (dann)
    SOT Dann)
    HUD (mee)
    BUR (mart)
    brigh (mart)

most are with Dann. Not bad right? with DDG, Trippier and Betrand as the rest of def, looks promising. probably not worth starting with martina and maybe getting him in later

He is vying for position with Mason Holgate. Martina is the better right back, Holgate is better central. Depends on Koeman's formation but I would tip Martina gets the nod.

Having a 5.5-6.0 4th mid vs going 4 at the back and pumping the same money into a back with some attacking threat?

    1. Bambi

5.5 mid is not the same as a 5.5 defender. You should compare a 5.5 mid to a 5.0 defender as this is the price difference from the baseline value

I'm in a 7 man FPL draft league and have a couple of dilemma's....

    A) Should my 1st pick be Lukaku or Kun?

    B) Should my second pick be KDB, Eriksen or Alli?

      A) I'd take Kane over either of those options. But Lukaku over Aguerö.

      B) KdB for me, but that one's closer and I think you could make a convincing argument either way. It may depend on your striker - I wouldn't take both Kane and Alli, for example, but I'd be happy with Kane & KdB or Lukaku and Alli.

Think this about as good as it gets. Only slight worry is no Alli/ Eriksen but can live with this considering the Wembley move:

    DDG (Elliott)

    Cedric Daniels Trippier Kolasinac (Hunemeir)

    Zaha KDB Pogba Willian (Carroll)

    Lukaku Kane (McBurnie)

Pretty happy with the balance across the team. If Cedric was confirmed for week one I would be delighted otherwise an easy switch to Yoshida till he is back.

Anyone find any major flaws in this?

After suggestions that I didnt have any spurs attack players here is my latest version

    Elliot - ( Fabianski )

    Yoshida- Kompany - Hegazi ( Mee - Hunemeier )
Salah - Zaha - De bruyne - Ali- (Lewis Cook )
    Lukaku - Lacazette - Abraham

    Any thoughts ?

Ok, so i think I've settled on a team fro now:

Bearing in mind I plan to wildcard fairly quickly anyway, say GW4. (Hence 2 4.0 defenders and goalkeeper)

    Foster (Elliot)

    Dawson Kolasinac Cedric (Long Marriapa)

    Salah Debryne Zaha Tadic (TC)

    Austin Lukaku Kane

    Thoughts?
