Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

    RMT please guys and gals!

    Foster

    Trippier / Daniels / Naughton

Ritchie / Willian / Alli / De Bruyne

    Rodriguez / Kane / Lukaka

    Subs: Fabianski / Loftus-Cheek / Suttner / Mee

Foster and Fabianski rotate well through the season in terms of home games

Mee, Suttner and Naughton rotate well

Solid starting XI. Loftus cheek and Ritchie wont rotate..you're most likely going to spend free transfers on midfield.. make sure you get a nailed on starter instead of loftus cheek in case ritchie doesnt perform

I'm still changing and this is my most recent team. What do you think chaps?

    Forster
    Trippier - Daniels - Soares
    KDB - Alli - Willian - Zaha
    Kane - Austin - Hernandez

Looking good, except triple for spurs. I would downgrade Alli and upgrade either Austin or Hernandez to Lukaku/Jesus/Lacazette.

    Hi all,
Back to fantasy after two seasons. Any advice?

    De Gea (Elliot)

    Yosihda, Bailly, Trippier (Rangel, Daniels)

    KDB, Eriksen, Willian, Zaha (Carroll)

    Lukaku, Austin, Rooney

    +1.5 in the bank.

    Forster (Elliott)
Daniels - Blind - Trippier (Hegazi, Rangel)
KDB - Pogba - Willian - Fabregas (Carroll)
    Lacazette - Lukaku - Benteke

    Questions:
    Pogba Vs Martial/Mkhi/Rashfordi or ?
    Blind Vs Bertrand

Lacazatte - I dont doubt the upside (suring easy fixtures, say), but i don't think he will be consistent. Otherwise solid team!

    Hi all,

Disclaimer: Lopsided team in favor of attack (wanted to try this out once)

    Foster (Myhill)
Ake - Mee - Yedlin (Suttner, Hudson)
Mkhi - Coutinho - De Bruyne - Willian (Carrol)
    Lukaku - Kane - Austin

Would love your thoughts..also, are my defenders nailed on?

Attack is the way to go! At least it has been traditionally. . The team looks solid, and you might benefit from going against the stream with the attacking focus this year. I am personally unsure about yedlin and hudson, but that is due to lack of research.

Thanks mate. Hudson probably wont start, just bench fodder. Yedlin is my only concern..

With more input and research I've come up with this:

    Foster / Myhill

    Daniels / Yoshida / Trippier / McAuley / Mee

    Ramsey / Willian / KDB / Alli / Milivojevic

    Lukaku / Austin / Morata

    Thoughts?

    Foster / Hart

Agree about the midfield, but if playing a 433 formation I could rotate Tadic, Fraser and Walters. Lots of question marks about the high price midfielders in terms of transfers and squad rotation at Man City

yes a 4-3-3 makes sense.. high price midfielders - advisable to prefer liverpool/united/chelsea over city

Hi all, nice to see such an enthusiastic community of premier league fans!
This is my 6th season of fpl and I don't think I'll ever stop playing it hah.
I would like you to comment on my team:

    Foster
    Alonso Dawson Trippier
    Pucheon Pogba Eriksen Willian Can
    Lukaku Kane

    Bench: Elliot, Hudson, Mee

What do you think of Puncheon? I didn't read his name in the comments at all but I think he's a grab for 5.0 considering his place in the first XI and taking set pieces.

Thanks and good luck in the upcoming season 🙂

    A crazy thought right here.

    Foster

    Kola, Valencia, Dann, Trippier

    De Bruyne, Fabregas/Willian, Coutinho, Ward-Prowse

    Kane Lukaku

Bench: Garbage. Only one playable: myhill, Caroll, 4.5 striker, 4.0 defender.

Going all in from the get go. Open for an early wildcard if the squad is way to thin. What do you think? Madness or genius?

Hi guys! New member here- will definitely be using this site as my fantasy football "Bible" for the season!

So I've got a couple concerns about my team and no clue as to how to remedy them (if they need remedying at all!)

    1) I've got too much money sitting on the bench (and then where to spend any money I gain by cutting down on my sub prices)
    2) I've got three Spurs players but I can't work out which (if any) to get rid of

This is what I've got at the moment (after a load of chopping and changing)

    £0.0 in the bank

    Foster (Elliot)
    Daniels, Luiz, Trippier (Cedric, Rangel)
    Eriksen, KDB, Willian, Coutinho (RLC)
    Austin, Kane, Chicharito

So what do you guys think? Cheers in advance! 🙂

RMT please. Not sure about going so heavy defensively.

    Foster (Begovic)
Alonso, Kolasinac, Valencia (Trippier, Cedric/Soton 5m)
    Willian, Salah, JWP (Ritchie, Fraser)
    Lukaku, Morata, Austin

So many players I want in, keep chopping and changing.

    Foster (Elliot)

    Trippier, Cedric, Azpilicueta, Alonso (Dunk)

    Coutinho, Alli, Willian, Ritchie (McArthur)

    Lukaku, Defoe (Gayle)

1.0 ITB. And if anyone could explain the the attraction of 3ATB that'd be great!

Looks a very strong team, nothing wrong with it imo. Maybe consider Suttner instead of Dunk as Dunk gets a lot of yellow cards. Suttner has 2 assists in pre-season so far.

Its also worth stating that the lack of City assets could backfire on you, they are looking very good.

What looks better for the 4th & 5th defender spots?

    A) Daniels + 4.0
    B) Francis + 4.5

Rest of the back line + keepers are:

    DDG Myhill
    Yoshida Dawson Suttner

Got my team together, always subject to a tweak or overhaul if Sanchez comes on strong.

    (Mee - 4.0)
    Coutinho - KDB -Willian - Shelvey -
    (Carroll)
    Kane - Lukaku - J Rod

0.5 ITB to perhaps upgrade Ake, J Rod or Shelvey.

    Any thoughts appreciated THX

Both mane and salah bossed it. Easy to switch for eriksen with the 0.5 or even alli if coutinho hots the eject button.
I think I'm an eriksen fan though

Thoughts? thinking forwards may let me down?

    Begovic -(Elliot)

    Bellerin-Tripier-Alonso-Ake- (Bertrand)

    KDB-Salah-Ramsey-Sigurdsson- (Loftus Cheek)

    Chicharito-Lacazette - (Abraham)

thinking abraham good fit for struggling swansea forwards, performed well in championship last season.

The forwards will let you down. I think its a problem that you haven't got much of a price range. Most of your players are mid priced assets which will make it hard to jump onto expensive players as your funds are spread around the whole team.

This is the last revision of my line-up:
    Foster, (Elliott)
    Trippier, Dawson, Ake, Bertrand, (Rangel)
Coutinho, Pogba, De Bruyne, (Loftus-Cheek, Carroll)
    Lukaku, Kane, Austin.

    Any thoughts please..

Looks a strong side. However I don't think its good to have a non player like Rangel, Loftus-Cheek and Austin aren't nailed either so it might be a good idea to pick guys that will start every week.

First RMT post... What do you guys think:

    Foster
    Cedric / Blind / Trippier
Ward Prowse / Salah (or Coutinho) / KDB / Willian
Lukaku / Kane / Rooney (just for the first week then Chicharito)

    Elliot / Angel / Hunemeier / Carroll

I know my subs are weak!

    Any comments appreciated!

Defence is a shambles. Only Trippier is safe for GW1. Its a WC waiting to happen.

Rest of the team is good but that D will put you into a whole lot of trouble early on.

Hmm... I thought Cedric was nailed... Blind is an easy swap to Lindelof or Daniels of Bournmouth but I wanted a Utd defender because of the fixtures...

Maybe I should just downgrade Rooney to Chicharito from GW1 and then I can put in Luiz... Still got Angel and Hunemeier 🙁

    This is my current team.

    Forster (Hart)
    Dawson Peid Klavan (Francis, Rangel)
    Ince Salah KDB Alli (Loftus-Cheek)
    Chicharito Lukaku Jesus

Kindly suggest if any changes are required.

Defence is too risky. Peid, Klavan and Rangel are not nailed on to start. I'd get some safer picks in there to reduce the risk.

Attack is good though, no issues there.

Thanks for the good suggestion. I can replace Chicharito to Austin that will free up 0.5. I can use that to upgrade my defense by replacing Peid, Klavan, and Rangel.

Who do you think are better replacements ??

Loads of options out there from 4.5 up. Just a matter of picking guys that are sure starters. I'm not convinced Austin is a starter btw

    Rate my Team guys...

    Forster (Myhill)

    Cedric Stones Dawson (Mee, Rangel)
    Willian Alli DeBruyne Matic (Mili)
    Rodriguez Lukaku Kane

Rangel, Mili and Matic should all be replaced by better options. Rangel doesn't start and Mili and Matic will get no more than 2pts on a weekly basis.

Please, rate my team for upcoming 3-4 game weeks
    de Gea - Hart (bench)
Cedric - Dawson - Yoshida - Dummett (bench) - Haidara (bench)
De Bruyne - Coutinho - Musa - Mirallas - Chamberlain
Lukaku - Kane - Quaner (bench)

    planning to play 3-5-2 mostly.
    1. Should I replace Hart with non-playing 4.0 keeper and spend extra 0.5 elsewhere?
    2. my defence will be changing a lot in 4-6 weeks. so this line-up is only for now.
    3. I want to keep KDB and Coutinho, the rest I can replace if you suggest any good ones
    4. Forwards ... for now not many options out there besides Jesus, Defoe, Chicharito, Lazazette? who else?

    your feedback is highly appreciated

I would drop Hart for someone like Elliot who is only 4 million and use the 0.5 to upgrade your defence.

Not sure if I'm happy with my team just yet. It could be a case of downgrading de Gea and Alonso and upgrading Pogba and Suttner and/or Austin.
    What do you think?

    De Gea
    Alonso, Trippier, Daniels, Suttner

    De Bruyne, Pogba, Fabregas

    Kane, Lukaku, Austin

Subs - Elliot, Carroll, Romeu, Hunemeier
