Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

    A) Mane Aké Ritchie/6.0 Mid
    B) Salah Francis Willian

B would have me rotating one of Yedlin/Francis each week.

Benteke has possibly lost penalty duties to Milivojevic. Means he might not get so many -1's and -2's this season!

But seriously, Defoe for 8.0 or Rooney for 7.5 seem like better alternatives in that price bracket.

I know most people here are going to say Coutinho, but Mane's looked fantastic, and that speed down the wing looks like a problem. I'm going against the grain and taking him.

As for Alli, does anyone think the switch to Wembley will have any effect? If Kane has a slow start will it hurt Alli? Those are my only concerns.

    Hi guys!

So I've got a couple concerns about my team and no clue as to how to remedy them (if they need remedying at all!)

    1) I've got too much money sitting on the bench (and then where to spend any money I gain by cutting down on my sub prices)
    2) I've got three Spurs players but I can't work out which (if any) to get rid of

This is what I've got at the moment (after a load of chopping and changing)

    £0.0 ITB

    Foster (Elliot)
    Daniels, Luiz, Trippier (Cedric, Rangel)
    Eriksen, KDB, Willian, Coutinho (RLC)
    Austin, Kane, Chicharito

So what do you guys think? Cheers in advance!

No not really (I am a Liverpool fan but I can accomadate United players ;))

Looks pretty solid, not sure about the defense. But dont make those transfers. Losing KDB means you dont have no city coverage and you dont need triple for spurs with Eriksen. Ramsey + Chicharito is also a better option than Vokes + Mahrez imo. I just dont get how people keep choosing Pogba, much better options instead of him.

Any help would be appreciated! (I really need to stop tinkering at this stage)

    DDG - Elliot
    Trippier - Dawson - Ake - Hudson - Hunemeier
    KDB - Pogba - Willian - Zaha - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Austin

Mainly nervous about the defence, with United coverage being a bit of a priority. I had Lindelof in there at first, but I've been persuaded that the United defence is a bit in flux at the moment, and DDG is the only one you can really trust. Which leaves Dawson as an in to WBA instead of Foster.

Zaha and Trippier both look a good pick this season, though I would consider giving Spurs some time to adjust to Wembley as their new home pitch. A 4.5 defender would work as rotation only, so if you're looking for a starter go with Trippier. With Miki you get rotation risk (many attackers in the Man Utd side), and you can't play a 4.5 def every week, so I think the latter is a better option. Maybe consider Mustafi or Stones at the same price as Trippier, then call Trippier in as his fixtures get easier.

Thanks a lot. I think even if I go for the Mkhi option it will only be for a short while whereas Zaha would probably be longer term due to the price difference and rotation like you said. I have Stones, Yoshida, Mee and Smith (BOU - to free up 0.5m) as well as Trippier. I looked at Mustafi as well and also thought about gambling on a 5.5 United defender instead of Tripper. Who do you think could be the safest starters out of Uniteds 5.5 defenders?

Lindelöf if he can perform, but in pre-season he's been looking a little shaky from what I've heard. If you're into taking a risk you could go for Blind who seems likely to earn a starting position with Shaw and Rojo injured (possibility of rotation with Darmian). In general, Mourinho doesn't seem to have found his starting back line just yet, and all but Bailly and Valencia seems to be in rotation risk.

    Hello!

It's that exciting time again and I would love some feedback on my team. After much deliberation I have initially settled for this:

    DDG / Elliot
Yoshida Trippier Dawson / Rangel Hunemeier
Pogba Coutinho KDB Milivojevic / Carroll
    Lukaku Kane Gayle

I like the 343 as I always tend to think the attacking players have more potential for points.

PS Lukaku or Kane as captain?

    I would appreciate any thoughts

Good team - As a hammer i would say Lukaku as captain. That boy always scores against us

Only concern is if all this Neymar talk will affect Coutinho, I would rather put Mane in as his a bigger goal threat but would need to find .5million!

Do you all think Kane and Ali will take time to adjust to new home ground?

Plus I know Willian looks tasty but do you all think Chelsea may have a slow start with a few major players missing?

Very nice team. I'm unsure of captain too but probably edging towards Lukaku atm

    RMT please

GK: De Gea (5.5) Foster (4.5)

    Def: Trippier (5.5) Cedric (5) Alonso (7) Dawson (5) Mee (4.5)

    Mid: Salah (9) De Bruyne (10) Eriksen (9.5) Willian (7) Ward-Prowse (5.5)

    Fwd: Lukaku (11.5) Rodriguez (6) Quaner (4.5)

Worried about not having Lukaku and Kane in - does it weaken my team with Lukaku as my only true strong forward?
