Scout Notes – Europa League

A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

A - Kolasinac, Milivojevic, Fraser Yoshi
    or
B - Daniels, Ritchie, Milivojevic, Bertrand

Both Fraser/Milivojevic and Ritchie/Milivojevic rotate well as 4th and 5th mids and both combo's offer a good attacking threat so would you prefer, Kola & Yoshi or Daniels & Bertrand?

    Thanks.

Klavin - really? thought first choice was Matip and Lovren
Tuanzabe - waste of a Man U spot
That midfield rotation is really bad.

Power three up front is too destructive.

Good grief this Neymar presser is boring.

Not to say other player presentation pressers weren't. They're always immensely dull.

It was quite amusing for a while, though, how Neymar keeps on repeating how his heart made the decision for him. For no other reason but that he said it so often, no matter what the question. Maybe the questions were quite boring too.

The amount of viable cheap third striker options around the 6.5m/7m mark is drying up...
    Gayle -> Rotatation with Mitro
Austin -> Most viable option, not sure where he'll play and if he's 100% nailed.
China and Iheanacho -> bad fixtures to start

maybe it's worth looking at strikers at 5m to enable more money to spent elsewhere or maybe a two striker formation could be the way to go.

      • 7 Years

Agreed, there's nothing I fancy around that mark that (£6.5m and below) I'm even confident will play 90 mins each match. You've got Austin but I'm not convinced he'll be first choice. You've got Rondon, Gray, Gayle and maybe Berahino but none of them inspire, in fact i'd rather put in a no-hoper at £5m and use the £1.5m saving elsewhere.

Kane never performs well in August. Last season he didn't score for 3 matches. The season before it was 6 matches. Sanchez regains match fitness remarkably quickly. I am one of the few who is NOT including any Spurs attacking players (typically slow starters and moving to a ground that is less suitable for their style of play) and not including Lukaku (a lot of Money for a player that might take time to adapt). None of those players have been convincing in pre-season. I am going with Sanchez and looking at the popularity of players i'll either be riding high or towards the bottom of the league come September. Sanchez is staying now, it really is time for people to accept that. With all the speculation he hasn't once publicly expressed a desire to leave.

A bit off-topic but if Batshuayi was to start on Sunday, either with Morata or as a lone striker, who'd be brave enough to put him in their squad ? I think he could be the dark horse this season.

    1. Camp No No
      • 10 Years

Not me. The problem is, you can't trust him starting enough. If he was a starter, then yes, he'd be in my team immediately.

Have to say that to an outsider his treatment at Chelsea looks really strange.

    2. Herc
      • 7 Years

I think he'll start over Morata for the first couple of games. Conte seemed to have a couple of digs regarding Morata's fitness a week or so ago so that's what leads me to think that.

The more I think about it the more I think i'll start with him. Morata is almost certainly not match fit and definitely not in sync with his teammates. If Bats starts ahead of him on Sunday I think i'll put him in. If he gets benched then he can be replaced but possibly after scoring an opening day hattrick at home against Burnley. At present i've got Jesus, Gayle and Austin up front though so i'd need to free up some money to be able to afford him. It's an expensive midfield.

I am starting to question the sense of going with Pied now because so many are picking Cedric. Cedric was given an extended break after the Confed Cup and in his absence Pied has performed well at RB. He was out for the whole of last season with an injury after being signed before last season. I'm gambling on Pied but he's only 4.5. I wouldn't gamble on Cedric getting his place back because he's more expensive. If Pied doesn't play i'll barely miss him and when I get the chance i'll replace him. If he becomes first choice a lot of people will jump on the bandwagon.
