Sky Sports Fantasy Football – Defenders

In our second article looking at the player list in the Sky Sports game, we bring you our top targets in defence.

Defenders have struggled in the game for a number of seasons, with the premium assets often offering little value in comparison to their midfield equivalents. Meanwhile, the cheaper backline assets regularly fail to deliver thanks to the point lost for every goal conceded.

Sky Sports have now looked to address this issue by giving defenders a goal conceded cushion – they now only get penalised after conceding two goals.

Ironically, this rule change looks set to boost the returns of the defenders who get fewer clean sheets rather than more.

Take Craig Dawson as an example.

The West Brom defender ended on 89 points, having kept just six clean sheets from his 37 starts. That means there were 31 matches when he conceded one goal (or more), which would have translated into an additional 31 points this time around, bringing his total to a more respectable 120 points.

Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, by comparison, would have only recorded an extra 19 points.

Cheap defenders again look the best way to go then, allowing the bulk of our budget to be spent in the attacking positions.

As our first article suggested, we will look at our top ten defenders before the squad overhaul. We aim to reassess and bring you some longer-term options after the international break.

The Picks

Vincent Kompany – 8.5 – 4.1% – Fixtures: bha EVE bou
The Belgian has a hefty price tag at 8.5, but that’s still a full 2.0 cheaper than the most expensive defenders. We had expected Kompany to be in the same bracket as those premium options, but clearly his previous injury problems have tainted Sky Sports’ view.

As a result, he appears to offer good value and, with the overhaul looming, you don’t need to be concerned with Kompany’s fitness for longer than three Gameweeks.

In his ten starts last season, the centre-back earned four clean sheets, three goals, one Man of The Match award and also managed a tier one tackling bonus and tier one passing on four occasions.

That’s an extraordinary rate of scoring for an 8.5 asset, particularly when you consider that a similar sum in midfield will get you Spurs’ Moussa Sissoko or Watford’s Etienne Capoue.

Granted, City’s fixtures are not totally straightforward, but factor in strong pre-season form and his ability to pick up points from several sources and Kompany easily makes our top ten.

Kieran Trippier – 8.1 – 15.3% – Fixtures: new CHE BUR
Over 15% have turned to Tripper already due to the transfer of Kyle Walker to rivals Man City.

Spurs were the best defence last season, both in terms of clean sheets (17) and just 26 goals conceded, so it’s easy to see why Fantasy managers have turned to Trippier.

The value is even clearer to see when you consider that Toby Alderweireld comes in at a lofty 10.1. Trippier promises more than just clean sheets, having racked up five assists in limited appearances last season – he started just six games and was a substitute six times. He could well be stationed in a wing-back role more often than not with Spurs swapping between a 3-5-2 and 4-2-3-1 on a regular basis.

They may take time to adjust over their two Wembley “home” fixtures but, at Trippier’s price, he is a worthy investment for the first three Gameweeks.

Charlie Daniels – 7.5 – 6.9% – Fixtures: wba WAT MCI
Many Fantasy managers have opted for Daniels from the off, despite the daunting visit of Manchester City in Gameweek three.

The opening two matches do look decent for clean sheet potential, however, particularly as Bournemouth have added Nathan Ake (7.6) and Asmir Begovic (6.6) to a defence that managed ten shut-outs in 2016/17.

Daniels’ main appeal remains his attacking influence – he recorded four goals and three assists on the way to 108 points last term. On the flipside, bonus points were hard to come by for the marauding full-back. He only managed an additional nine points, and 67 goals conceded by Bournemouth didn’t help his cause either.

But the addition of a potent finisher in Jermain Defoe may help Daniels capitalise on his 86 crosses, and 28 chances created last season – statistics that put him in the top 20 for defenders in both categories.

Craig Dawson – 7.4 – 3.2% – Fixtures: BOU bur STK
The main appeal of the West Brom assets pre-overhaul is their strong opening fixtures.

Dawson gets the edge over goalkeeper Ben Foster due to his goal threat at set-plays. He scored four last term and is potentiality the main target for dead-ball deliveries given that Gareth McAuley (7.5) is currently sidelined by injury.

New signing Ahmed Hegazi (6.2) looks set to start in McAuley’s place and offers us a risky, but cheaper, route into Tony Pulis’ back line, while full-back Allan Nyom (6.7) provides the middle ground. What Nyom lacks in attacking output he makes up for in bonus potential, having earned 23 points from tackling last season. However, I feel that Dawson warrants the extra investment.

Jack Stephens – 6.5 – 1.4% – Fixtures: SWA WHU hud
A very cheap price, great fixtures and a differential to boot – seems too good to be true? Quite possibly.

A new manager at the helm and uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s (8.9m) future make Stephens a risky pick at this stage. But it may be one worth taking.

The young centre-back registered six clean sheets in his 15 starts, and Saints themselves managed 14 over the season. Stephens didn’t make much of an impact bonus-wise or offensively, but that’s of little concern when he comes in at roughly the same price as the three promoted teams’ defenders, all of which he will surely outscore if he continues to make the starting line-up.

Tommy Smith – 6.2 – 0.6% – Fixtures: cry NEW SOT
Experienced Sky Sports managers are used to eyeing up the promoted defenders, given the need to invest heavilty elsewhere.

Tommy Smith, at 6.2, will likely have raised a few eyebrows following his four goals and ten assists in the Championship. In fact, Huddersfield Town’s backline may make or break many of our pre-overhaul teams as they offer some of the cheapest starting defenders in the game, with decent fixtures.

Competition is stiff in the Terriers’ defence,  but Smith gets our nod as he looks the most secure option while also offering a significant attacking threat.

Joel Ward – 6.0 – 7.6% – Fixtures: HUD liv SWA
A man who has probably made his way into many initial drafts because of his rather bizarre price tag in comparison to his Palace defensive team-mates.

Two strong home matches from his three pre-overhaul fixtures suggest that Ward is a great enabler, and he even flirts with tackle bonus fairly often – he earned 21 points last campaign.

However, new Eagles manager Frank de Boer looks to have thrown a spanner in the works, with Ward benched in some recent pre-season friendlies following the move to a three-man backline.

He remains on the list, but will need monitoring. Elsewhere, new arrival Jairo Riedewald (7.1m) offers us a more secure route into the Palace backline, but at an increased price.

Paul Dummett – 6.0 – 0.7% – Fixtures: TOT hud WHU
With little attacking threat and average fixtures, Dummett doesn’t immediately jump out as an option.

But it’s our quest for cheap starting defenders who aren’t too leaky at the back that makes him a candidate for our pre-overhaul line-ups.

Newcastle conceded 40 in the Championship, making them one of the better defences, and with Rafa Benetiz’s top-flight experience, you would expect him to focus on ensuring that his side are difficult to break down over the opening matches.

At 6.0 and with a secure starting spot, Dummett offers us a fairly secure, if unglamorous, pre-overhaul option.

Markus Suttner – 5.7 – 0.3% – Fixtures: MCI lei wat
The fixtures are not great for Brighton’s new left-back, but his price and potential certainly are.

Four goals and five assists in the Bundesliga for the relegated Ingolstadt seem pretty impressive, and he even fancies himself as a set-piece expert, although he’ll need to oust former team-mate Pascal Gross to have a say for the Seagulls.

Suttner is also a keen tackler, averaging 2.2 a match. That means he could delve into tier one bonus now and again, and if he starts well, he could also be an option post-overhaul.

Connor Goldson – 4.0 – 4.4% – Fixtures: MCI lei wat
Connor who? You may not know his name because he probably won’t play for Brighton, and, believe it or not, therein lies his appeal.

Almost 5% have cottoned on to the fact that he is the cheapest player in the game and that’s all that matters.

Playing with only ten players seems like madness, but the sheer amount of money saved by picking him and the knowledge that you cannot receive minus points after a drubbing is quite liberating.

Pairing Goldson with a more expensive defender such as Spurs’ Trippier would set you back 12.1 – just 0.1 different from a partnership of Joel Ward and Paul Dummett, for example.

Alternatively, going with Goldson and keeping the rest of your defence low-cost also frees up lots of cash to cover the top midfielders and forwards pre-overhaul. Whether he remains an option post-overhaul will depend on which cheap defenders start the season on form.

    If Bat starts could be a winning combo whilst Hazard is out. Attacking defense and pretty solid for CS's. Considering swapping Alonso and Kol for 2 of Cahill, Valencia or Walker.

    Good afternoon everyone! The match that I bring you today is between Crystal Palace and Schalke 04. Again, feel free to ask any questions you may have or to give your opinion. The point is of this is just to have a healthy debate going on here!

    This is the last game of the pre-season of Schalke 04, before the Germans started their competitive calendar on the 14th of August in a game to count for the German Cup. With that being said, coach Domenico Tedesco put some usual starters on the pitch. Schalke 04 in 6 friendly games had won 5 and tied 1, scoring 16 goals and conceding 4 goals.

    For this last pre-season game, this time in front of their own fans, the new Crystal Palace coach Frank De Boer played in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Speroni in goal, Milivojevic, Dann and Riedewald as centre-backs, the 4 man in the midfield were Townsend, Puncheon, Loftus-Cheek and van Aanholt and the front three were Eyenga-Lokilo, Zaha and Benteke.

    You can clearly see the influence of the new coach in the way of playing by Crystal Palace. When the opposite defenders try to build the game from behind, all Palace players advance on the pitch and put up a very high pressure, with the system remaining in its entirety in 3-4-2-1, with the centre-backs near the centre circle, always looking for the offside trap. However, when the opposing team manages to get the ball near the centre circle, this pressure decreases altogether, with Townsend and van Aanholt joining their teammates at the back and Eyenga-Lokilo and Zaha making their respective positions, in a 5-4-1 formation.

    Their initial construction phase rarely passes through the feet of Puncheon or Loftus-Cheek, with Milivojevic looking for Townsend on the right side or Riedewald looking for van Aanholt on the left side. The alternative to these two options is always a long ball into Benteke.

    1st Half Highlights:
    9th minute - Eyenga-Lokilo took a free-kick into Dann who headed the ball wide;
    20th minute – Loftus-Cheek passes the ball to Townsend who dribles it to the central area of the pitch, at the edge of the area, and shoots for a great stop by the German’s goalkeeper;
    27th minute – Dann does a very very risky pass to Speroni who cleared the ball against a Schalke’s attacker and the ball goes wide the post;
    39th minute – van Aanholt’s shot goes wide of the post after a great work by Zaha at the edge of the area;
    42nd minute – Zaha shots inside of the area for an easy save by the German’s goalkeeper;
    44th minute – Schalke’s player does a cross from the right side of Palace’s defense and Insua scores from an header.

    2nd Half Highlights:
    50th minute – great ball behind Palace’s centre-backs but the shot goes over the bar;
    52nd minute – Cross (guess from where?) from the right side of Palace’s defense but the shot goes over the bar;
    62nd minute – Great work by Zaha on the left side who crosses for a great goal by Benteke;
    68th minute – Loftus-Cheek’s shot from the edge of the area goes wide;
    71st minute – Townsend -> Ward
    79th minute - Eyenga-Lokilo -> Chung-Yong Lee
    82th minute – Riedewald -> Tomkins
    84th minute – Great recovery by van Aanholt who dribles the ball inside until the edge of the area where he does a great pass to Benteke. The belgium sritker was 1 on 1 with the keeper, he tries a chip but completely fails.

    Conclusions: Crystal Palace is going to have a lot of difficulties against fast forwards who play at the edge of the offside (i.e. Vardy); many of the Schalke attacks were successfully made on the right side of the Palace defense (there are clear difficulties of defensive positioning in Townsend); the two midfielders are very different players: Puncheon always tries to offer the ball to one of his teammates, without bringing it for too long; Loftus-Cheek always tries many dribles in the central área of the pitch in order to gain space for a shot at the edge of the área; Townsend was the most dangerous player in the first half; Zaha and van Aanholt were the most dangerous players in the 2nd half; it is very difficult to take the ball off of Zaha (the number of fouls he suffers is impressive); Eyenga-Lokilo took all the free-kicks and all corners (there wasn’t any direct free-kick in the game).

        Speroni did alright. The goal they conceded wasn't his fault. So I guess it's hard to predict that. But given Speroni played today I guess he will be in starting line-up for GW1

        I also think that Speroni may be faster than Hennessey (?) and for that reason De Boer prefers the Argentine since the GK will have a massive work to do due to that high line defense

      Thanks, Palace (and Bournemouth) are my picks for the value midtable teams this year. I'm strongly considering risking PvA, the potential reward of that pick at 5.5 is so high.

        Zaha and Townsend were the best FPL midfielders in this game, but Townsend will manage very few attempts inside de box. Zaha on the other hand, did manage some good chances to score from there. Zaha is clearly the man to choose here

      Zaha is the one to watch IMO. If fit he will play 38 games a season. He is the main man in the team so his goal involvement will be relatively high.

      Why was Milivojevic playing as CB? Did he take any corners or free kicks? Thanks.

        Milivojevic is playing in that position in these friendlies. De Boer rates him in that position. To answer your second question, no. As I wrote, Eyenga-Lokilo took all the free kicks and all corners. Only at 75th minute Milivojevic took one indirect free-kick, maybe because Eyenga-Lokilo wasn't too inspired in this matter

      Here they are the post-match comments by De Boer (source: https://www.cpfc.co.uk/):

      “We dominated more of the second half and we could have won the game, but we know that the physical aspect is very important and the Germans are always very fit, but I think that we looked fitter. I am pleased with how they dealt with how we want to play, and now I’m looking forward to next week.

      “Schalke are a team that want to be back in Europe and be in the top five of the league again and they have bought a lot of good players, so when you consider that we can be very satisfied today.”

      De Boer handed teenage winger Jason Lokilo a second start in a row after he played against Metz, and the Dutchman has been pleased with what he has seen from the youngster who he admits he didn’t know anything about before he arrived at Palace.

      “I didn’t know him when I came in as he was an under-23 player but Mark Bright mentioned that he is one of the talented players in that group,” De Boer said. “We were a man or two short in training so we picked him to participate in them and he made a great impression of his qualities, and that’s why he deserved to play today.

      “Jason had a bit of tension playing at Selhurst Park for the first time so he had cramp, and Jairo got through 80 minutes so overall they [the Palace squad] looked very fit and ready to start the season.”

      Which is the weak side of Palace's defense you're referring to... the side with PvA or the other side?

      Just want to start by saying a massive thanks to you André. Your preseason posts have been really intelligent and informative and I would love to see more insightful content like yours on the site.

      I was at the game this afternoon too and agree with what you say about the Palace defence - they will really struggle against on-the-shoulder forwards with pace or balls over the top to runners from midfield. For me Riedewald looked the best of the 3 Cb's today - he was alert and very mobile, a good foil to Dann's aerial presence.
      Didn't see Schalke's goal as I was avoiding the deluge at near half time, so can't comment on the defending for that.

      Regarding midfield, I feel De Boer will have to tweak the shape to be competitive in the Prem: Punch and Loftus are both good in possession, but were outnumbered far too often in the middle of the pitch - De Boer had obviously insisted on width, but Palace paid for losing the ball on the wing in a way that will be very costly in a strongly contested league game. The way Loftus put himself about in the game probably convinced the manager that he needs to be starting most weeks. Strong on the ball, good turn of pace and eager to drive at the opponents box and chase down loose balls - he and Zaha were easily the best players in Palace shirts today and probably on the pitch full stop. Zaha is full of trust and tricks and, as André states incredibly hard to tackle without giving a foul away..but he will def be injured at some point in the season, purely from the amount of rash tackles he attracts.

      Up front the youngster Lokilo had flashes of brilliance and should be given plenty of opportunities over the season. Benteke was quiet really, apart from his goal, which was the result of a goalkeeping error. I feel Palace looked better with Ward on the wing in place of Townsend - his delivery was a lot more telling and gave Benteke much more of the service he thrives on.

      Today's starting 11 is probably the team that De Boer has settled on as his strongest, but it could still do with some work.

      In short (now he says it!): Reindewald, VA, Loftus and Zaha are the ones to watch. IMO.

      Great write up! I'm feeling like sending you tapes of my 5 a side for analysis.
      I feel de Boer has a lot of promise as manager. The inter position was tough as he claimed the side were under done physically when Mancini left them. Given that he's got the full preseason with Palace, I expect him to do better.

      Amazing post.

      I'm a big fan of De Boer's total football style and the way he loves to include the CBs in the attacking phase. The high press can be incredibly effective if you have intelligent quick CBs who are competent at the offside trap.

      Zaha is nailed in my team, and I'll be watching every Palace game with great interest this season! Keep up the great posts! 🙂

        Oh no I don't prefer Zaha to him. Basically the way I would put Zaha's fantasy potential is that he's always a threat but he doesn't have that goalscoring mentality. I believe that he could be involved a lot in all goals that Palace score this season but many times as a "assister of the assister" or the assister himself

    Just wanted to say I genuniely think Random name's team is the best i've ever seen on here. It's balanced perfectly and i took his advise and got KDB instead of Jesus and Aguero as KDB can assist either one. But only Jesus or Aguero can score we can't have both. KDB also gets that sweet clean sheet bonus and more point for an assist and goal. Less injury prone than the other two as well.
