The Numbers Game – West Bromwich Albion

Our summer series of members’ articles – offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of 2016/17 – continues with West Bromwich Albion.

To begin with, we’ll look at the performance levels over the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

In addition, we’ll check in on the Baggies’ threat from set-pieces, in particular, with their reliance on dead-ball situations remaining pivotal to their prospects.

West Brom certainly upped their attacking output in the previous season.

Pulis’ side netted a mere 34 goals – the second-worst record in the top-flight – on their way to finishing in fourteenth spot in 2015/6. Yet last term, they found the net on 43 occasions to claim tenth position.

    Basically my question is this...

A Kompany with 2 rotating mids having to bench a Ritchie/JWP/Fraser each week
    Or
B Stones/Otamendi (Which One?) With Zaha playing every week with the other a 4.5 2 pointer like Romeu with Carroll there to come in occasionally

      -1, put's you back at zero 🙂

You have as valid a point as anyone else, but their opening fixtures look good and I definitely saw some good attacking improvements in the squad before they hit the beach last season. Hopefully this season they will also get back some of that defensive prowess Pulis is renowned for.

David de gea - now a valid option?

Traditionally, we turn to cheap keepers for the start of the season, opting for a 8.5 combo. Not only is this a nice way to free up some precious funds for our squads, but this has proved time and time again to be successful and bring more value than premium goalkeepers. Last season is probably the best example of this, with the likes of Heaton, Jakupovic and Pickford all priced under 5m, with the latter two costing just 4m.

I raise the question of whether this season is different. For the first time ever, I've got David de Gea sitting in my team. It's remarkable to think really given that as far as I'm concerned he's the best keeper in the league. My reasoning is partly due to the United defence situation, partly due to the lack of options that I feel are elsewhere.

Put simply, DDG is currently the cheapest nailed on option in that United back line. Bailly and Valencia seem safe, but it's impossible to be sure on who else will be playing. And when it comes to premium defenders, I'm favouring the likes of Alonso and city defenders over those two. Lindelof's uncertain performances thus far twinned with Jones' European ban mean his chance of starting is far from secure. Therefore DDG is arguably the best route into a back four that is defensively solid, managed by mourinho and has friendly opening fixtures. I want those safe looking clean sheet points please.

I also feel that the argument in favour of DDG is strengthened by the lack of options elsewhere. The argument for cheaper keepers is of course save points on top of clean sheets. Heaton and Pickford mastered that last season. To me there seems to be no one capable of achieving the same heights this season. Heaton and Pickford are priced at 5m respectively. One has lost his main centre back, the other has horrible fixtures. I'm not a huge fan of foster (4.5) and have opted instead for Dawson at 5. I would do the same with Daniels/Ake for begovic. Likewise keepers like fabianski and henessey just won't in my opinion score enough points, either save points or clean sheets.

On top of all this, I've found a side with DDG + 4m (probably Elliot) that I think is really nicely balanced and as a result I do not feel like I should be downgrading him. My question is essentially this - is David de gea, loved by our friends the casuals (his ownership is now 29%), now an option for us all?

Let me know your thoughts folks.

I generally agree. If WBA had strengthened their team a bit more, Foster would be my pick.

The problem is when you want to upgrade offensively and have an extra million tied up in your GK.

Do you not think Bailly could outscore De Gea though? 14 bonus points last season compared to De Gea's 5 (and Bailly played less minutes).

I normally start with a 4.5 GK to save money, Heaton and Foster were no brainers last year.

I'm going with DDG this year though. As you mentioned, his ownership (and the ownership% of United players in general) is so high that every time United keep a clean sheet this season, which should be fairly often, you'll slide down the ranks.

With that in mind, DDG seems like the cheapest and most secure way into a solid United defence. Blind, Shaw, Lindelof and Darmian aren't nailed, Bailly won't score attacking points and will get booked so not worth the 0.5 over DDG and Valencia is slightly too expensive.

If I get off to a terrible start, I can see DDG being one of the first casualties in a wildcard however.

Hennessey/Begovic/Fabianski/Foster/Elliott/Lossl.. Plenty of cheap options that could keep clean sheets and rack up save points.. It's a no to 5.5 GKs from me

I was going to pick DDG but it's hard to ignore Southampton's fixtures so I'm edging toward Forster now. Saves .5

Well-written article Meerkat. Also have De Gea and have a nicely balanced squad with room for manoeuvring once we get a few games into the season.

Can't see me changing him, but the option is always there as I've opted for a strategic, well-balanced approach this season.

Why are we ignoring King? I don't see him in any RMTs. Yes he has been reclassified but he was on fire towards the end of the season. Why won't he reproduce that form with Defoe strengthening the attack?
