The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

She messed up with her comments at the end of the Middlesbrough match today as well. Like totally contrasting comments to what was being said before this. Brutal...!!!

Jamie Redknapp will hopefully go as well, still baffled as to why he's on there. Don't think I can ever remember him making a comment of any worth or insight.

Can't stand Redknapp. Seems to be under some illusion that he was a top player. I remember him arguing with Gullit and Souness on a Champions League program about the mentality needed to become a great player and a winner. They both just looked him incredulously.

Completely agreed. He was making comments today and you could see Carragher getting annoyed with him. Must be infuriating for the other pundits to be constantly interrupted by someone who can't think of anything insightful themselves and just leeches onto their comments.

Yeah, Rednapp is too eager to get involved. Talks over folk an' everything! Carragher is good. Granted, he's not terribly well educated etc, but he tries God damn hard...!

Carragher and Neville are brilliant on MNF, and I assume they're going to be the duo on FNF now as well. They add so much when analysing, and complement each other very well. Neither make comments for the sake of making them, unlike Redknapp who seems to want to continually appear intelligent.

Watching the Liverpool game on MOTD and I'll be honest I really don't get what zonal marking is all about. In my day you marked a man, kept goal side of him, and attacked the ball.

How can marking a space and not a man be better? Surely by doing that you're allowing the opposition players to make runs on you and make themselves favourite for the ball. I dunno how these managers don't see it meself, must be me...

Because it focuses on the ball not the man, if the ball comes anywhere near your zone you go for it and clear instead of following someone else around and then trying to beat them to it if it comes your way. There are pros and cons to both systems.

Because it focuses on the ball not the man

It's man to man marking that does that surely? If you follow the man then you've got more chance in influencing whether he gets to a ball by marking him. Well that's how it worked when I played 😆

Someone once said: "Space has never shot or headed a football for a goal..."

        I tend to agree lol

          • 11 Years

By focusing on the ball first and foremost you aren't reacting to any one player necessarily, you're reacting to the ball coming in. Generally its used because the when its done right its much better, the problem is that it isn't very often because it requires concentration and intelligence as well as having the ability to actually head effectively.

Hopefully we sign VVD and Keita. Hakim Ziyech could be a decent Coutinho replacement. Wouldn'the mind getting a player or two in exchange from Barca, namely Andre Gomes.

    KDB>>Silva

    Lukaku>> Morata.

Will more than likely stick but thoughts on this?

Stick. Lukaku hasn't even played yet and you're thinking of getting him out?

tbh KDB could have assisted Silva, just Silva chose to pass to Kun. Its not like KDB was on the half way line, he didnt get points but he didnt have a bad game. I think Silva might be a smart pick but not sure its worth downgrading KDB just yet.

Would've got an assist if Jesus' goal was allowed. Looked to get shots away whenever he could. So composed and silky on the ball.

After Chelsea's performance today, their drama with Costa, losing to Arsenal in the FA cup final & in the Community Shield, Lukaku being pinched from under their noses, matic leaving to Jose and their history for imploding in 2015/2016 season. Where do people realistically expect Chelsea to finish, top 4? or like top 7?

    1. Patty
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

They will still finish Top 4

    2. Darklord_bg

Got a bet that they'll finish outside the Top 4, put it on as soon as Conte sent the text to Costa, knew that would start problems

Interesting. I remain skeptical on Xhaka's potential but I'm definitely doing Alonso>Hegazi. No defender is worth 7mil when a team is playing like that and with those fixtures.
