The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Kane - Chelsea home
Firmino, Salah, Mane - Palace home
    Lukaku - Swansea away
Aguero, Jesus, KDB - Everton home
    Lacazette - Stoke away

Kane/Salah for myself! If i had Jeaus i think i'd be tempted by him

Got Fabregas and Bellerin on my chop list. Keen to build value so want to transfer before they drop or targets rise.

Straight swap for Willian + Kola? Or wait for Trippier after the Chelsea game?

I sense that there's an absolute cricket score waiting to happen out there and Brighton are unfortunately going to be to be on the wrong end of it if my eyes didn't deceive me today.

Kane > Vardy REALLY looks like the quintessential transfer for GW2 followed by the reverse in GW3.

    Right?

Arsenal are the perfect opposition for Leicester; they come forward, and don't have a dominate, quick defence.

If Brighton go to Leicester and park the bus (which they will), then Leicester will struggle to score more than 1.

Chelsea were worse than Brighton today. I'd rather have Kane next week, even if they were the same price. And planning transfers is fine until you get an injury/suspension in your side.

Brighton kept the most attacking team in the league at bay for 70 mind until one of their players made a costly mistake. That game could have just as easily been 0-0. Doubt the Fox's will score more than two and expect Nacho to start.

Salah, largely, was crap today. Missed every shot he took as in not even on target. Assist for the pen was fair enough, he was fouled, but his goal was from Firmino chipping it for his own goal and Salah just managed to knick it.

Not necessarily a bad player or pick but absolutely not worth losing a wildcard for.

    Forster Elliot
    Danilo Kolasinac Bertrand Dummett Long
    KDB Zaha Tadic Willian Carroll
    Jesus Firmino Lukaku

    any changes necessary?

Might be pressing my luck with another Danilo start. Xhaka is tempting for a price rise but I think it's a little knee jerky.

Stick. Xhaka won't be a good fpl asset. Lot of bookings. Most weeks he will get 3, 2 or 1

Dummett has a nice fixture anyway. Just bench Danilo if you're worried.

Wouldn't transfer him out though. It's a waste if you plan on bringing Trippier in GW3.

      Stay away from Xhaka.

Cheers guys. Only thing I'm really bummed about is having Tadic taking up my third SOT option instead of a defender. but hindsight is 20-20 didnt know if Cedric would start for sure.

Awful on so many levels, ozil returns and take set pieces along with sanchez, ramsey will bomb forward in xhaka's place, he'll hold and pick up cards were as zaha is playing a defensively poor liverpool side, and had Swansea home gameweek 3, but you gained 0.1 so everyones a winner ey

Ozil played yesterday. I agree that Xhaka is a poor pick, but you can't use Ozil against him.

Price rises have gotten me too at times, but it's too early in the season imo. Think we need 2 or 3 more gw to see trends. Zaha may explode against Pool. Remember when Liverpool scored 4 against Arsenal then lost 3-0 to Burnley?

I think Cedric is a better pick than Dann, but Dann does have an aerial goal threat. Does your squad allow you to bench Dann and play 3 other defenders?

I still think it might be worth playing him, although you'd expect another Southampton CS against West Brom, tbh.

Dann could have and probably should have scored from a corner today. He has Liverpool next. Liverpool just conceded 2 corners in one match. It's a no from me.

Right, the DZ is the best place to ask this

    Should I get a car?

I passed my test like a year ago, but purposely didn't get a car because of the cost. Not just the cost of the car, but insurance too. Because of my age and area it'll be really expensive.

My plan was to get a car after uni, so I can maintain it as I earn money.

I'm fed up now and would love to be able to drive.

I could barely afford it now, but by the end of the year I'd be digging behind the couch for money.

    Thoughts?
