Transfers

Market Forces – Gameweek 1

The season kicked off with an explosive Gameweek 1 and the Fantasy Premier League market quickly followed suit, as managers rushed to seize upon early bandwagons.

In the first of a series of weekly articles for Fantasy Football Scout, we at whogottheassist.com will be reviewing and commenting on trends and behaviours in the market, looking at common themes and giving our view on the viability of the transfers taking place.

As the dust settles on the opening ten fixtures, these are the five targets earning the attention of FPL managers.

Romelu Lukaku

With a brace at home to his favourite opponents West Ham United (he’s now scored 11 goals against them), Lukaku had an outstanding debut in Manchester United’s 4-0 romp.

A 13-point return and maximum bonus made him the joint-top scoring forward for the Gameweek alongside Jamie Vardy and Sam Vokes.

Over 80,000 transfers in the last 24 hours points to a strong likelihood that owners will be further rewarded with a double rise – 0.2 in terms of team value and 0.1 in selling value.

An away fixture against Swansea City, which has captaincy written all over it, and with an ownership now in excess of 50%, Lukaku is as close as it gets to “essential” right now.

The main victim of the rush to bring in the Belgian is Harry Kane. The Spurs forward disappointed his 36% ownership with a one-point return as his August struggles continue.

Kane has already seen almost 70,000 sales in total, with 64,603 of those arriving in the last 24 hours.

But sellers could be accused of acting too impulsively. Six shots, five of which were inside the box, suggest that the “August goal” is not far away and they may well rue giving up on the England international so early.

Granit Xhaka

Achieving a price rise last night (with almost 180,000 managers drafting him into their side), the Swiss midfielder is one of the first major bandwagons of the season.

As Xhaka is now seemingly on corners (he took all but one), which garnered two assists and helped return 10 points, one can understand the reasoning – particularly when he was priced at just 5.5.

He also offers a clear swap for those who own two of the weekend’s most disappointing assets.

Team-mate Alex Iwobi (2.8%) was omitted from the teamsheet on Friday night, while those holding Chelsea’s suspended Cesc Fabregas could make a similar move and save 1.5m in the process.

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha is another to contribute to Xhaka’s ownership. The winger has lost over 67,000 owners and that will doubtless accelerate further following the revelation of his departure from Selhurst Park sporting a leg-brace.

Xhaka comes packaged with notable caveats. Occupying a central role in the Arsenal midfield, he isn’t renowned for attacking threat – his debut season in 2017/17 delivered just two goals, three assists and 85 points.

More significantly, the ball-winner is also notorious for disciplinary lapses. He saw red twice and was booked five times last season.

If he ends up surrendering corners and free-kicks to Mesut Ozil, Xhaka’s appeal would take an almighty dent and, of course, he takes up an Arsenal slot in our squads.

That might not be an issue now, but, as the season develops, we may require that allocation for big-hitting options.

Ahmed Hegazi

Another early Sunday night riser, Hegazi rewarded his owners with a goal, a clean sheet and three bonus points.

This 15-pointer meant that the colossal Egyptian defender – who stands at 6 feet 5 inches – was the top-scoring player of the Gameweek.

Starting at only 4.5, he offers the cheapest route into a West Brom defence renowned for scoring goals from set-pieces. Indeed, Hegazi’s stellar performance has resulted in over 145,000 transfers-in.

Many have recruited him as their replacement for the suspended Gary Cahill, freeing up 1.5m and also taking advantage of West Brom’s kindly fixture run.

But those coveting Hegazi should be aware that this might be a short-term punt.

Hegazi’s place in the team could be under threat, with Gareth McAuley and Jonny Evans both currently having short-term injuries.

Tony Pulis is also thought to be actively pursuing Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

Mohamed Salah

It was a great weekend for Egyptian debutants, as summer signing Mo Salah bagged a goal and assist in his first Premier League outing for Liverpool.

That produced 11 valuable points, and a decent relationship already looks to be blossoming between him, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. The “red roulette” of who will score is very much on once again.

An appealing home fixture against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 suggests that he could maintain his early form, a feeling shared no doubt by the 102,000+ managers who’ve brought him in since Saturday.

Perhaps not suprisingly, Philippe Coutinho has been deemed surplus to requirements in the clamour to acquire Salah.

The absent Brazilian has been one of the most popular like-for-like transfers in the first Gameweek, having suffered over 66,000 sales.

With a Salah price rise imminent, Coutinho owners who are yet to act could be driven to make the switch.

Jamie Vardy

Two goals and 13 FPL points mean that the party is very much back on for Leicester City’s striker.

Over 107,000 managers have claimed their invite, and he is another to benefit from the Gabriel Jesus and Harry Kane fallout following their Gameweek 1 blanks.

Priced at only 8.5 this season – 1.5 million less than in 2016/17 – Vardy could provide further value ahead of a plum home fixture against Brighton.

Final thoughts

As expected, the transfer market in FPL is extremely volatile over the early Gameweeks. We will continue to see bandwagons form and die at pace over during this initial period.

Xhaka and Hegazi are interesting early targets, and their early popularity is certainly unexpected. Both could grind to a halt should Hegazi come under threat from McAuley, or if Xhaka draws the wrath of the match officials.

Lukaku and Vardy, however, have proven track records from previous seasons, with the Man United striker seemingly set to dominate for overall ownership.

Salah is something of an unproven quantity in the Premier League, but has already demonstrated his potential to keep pace with Mane and Firmino.

Saturday’s haul, coupled with his 9.0 price point, means that he provides the obvious solution to the Coutinho exit plan.

Meanwhile, all the Kane sellers could be rushing to bring him back if he delivers the goods against Chelsea’s fragile defence.

Certainly, the Gameweek 3 home encounter with Burnley will be a concern. Kane frustrated against the Clarets last season, though Sean Dyche’s side may find it difficult to shackle him and a confident Spurs on the Wembley turf.

While we can scoff at the thought of shedding Kane so soon, it seems likely that we will choose a time to ride some of these heavy-hitter wagons at some point. The skill will always be to get on, and off, at just the right point.

    Need advice for this team:

    Foster
    Daniels/Danilo/Cedric
    Willian/KDB/Mkhi/Salah
    Abraham/Kaku/Kane

    Elliot/Carrol/Rangel/Long

Wanted to ship out Abraham but not enough in the bank. Thoughts?

Would save a transfer if I was you. Abraham was a solid 3 choice striker and don't see anyone in his price bracket better in the short term and not worth a hit to upgrade

Stick with it this week as you will need transfer for Danilo next week. You could then go Danilo to a 4.5/5.0 and Abraham to 6.0/6.5. Mounie?

Daniels to a 4.5 and Abraham to Mounie or Rodriguez?

Daniels is a good player but after the Watford game theyve some pretty bad fixtures in the next 8, with only Brighton at home and Stoke away looking likely for clean sheets.

    Catch 22:

I have 3 Utd players lukak, matic and & victor but I want miki in before the price increase, but also Mounie. It'd mean I'd need to make 3 transfers already at -8. Is bringing them two in plus a 4.5 defender to replace lindelof worth it?

That's what I ask myself every time I consider these transfers, it's the price increase that makes me want to in test, but I do wonder if losing 8 points is worth it at this early stage

Wow that's a lot. I have brought in Mkhitarian for -4 but -8 is a lot because gamweek 1, you don't know the clear picture. I think Mkhitarian should be a long term option, but not so sure about Mounie, even though I had him from the start. It was a pleasant surprise but I remain skeptical he can continue like this.

I'll be honest, had never heard of the guy but needed a cheap 4.5 forward. Was first on my bench because all my bench players are deliberately useless and so I hadn't done any kind of bench ordering. Then Iwobi didn't play and he came on to give me 4 points. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit your luck eh.

With uncertainty over Danilo playing time would you play over anyone in this team? Already made free transfer of Iwobi to Atsu and Danilo transfer next week

    Foster
    Bertrand Ake Kolasinac
    KDB Willian JWP Atsu
    Lukaku Kane Firmino

    Elliot Danilo Carroll Long

No. Not with your team. The problem is the danger of him being a second half substitue and earning 1 point. Well, he still might be better than Atsu because I think if he doesn't start, he probably won't get substituted. Because Mendy might at least make the bench and if Sane starts then Pep would surely want to give him a few minutes. But of course he could replace Walker. So tough one. I am facing a similar situation. I have to decide between him and Manquilo.

Anyone with Zaha in their team thinking about getting rid already seriously confuses me. He's a quality pick, cheap and looks good to return points. He might be out through injury but we have no idea as to the severity of said injury. It all points to holding off for a few days and seeing what Palace say regarding Liverpool.

Anyone bringing in Salah should be mindful of Pool's CL game tomorrow night. Same goes for Bobby. Have to see what happens and plan around that.

Any team you've got should have been built up around at least the first few GW's so early transfers (other than forced transfers due to injury) are bizarre - you won't get a WC every week, so you've surely got to be planning mid-long term in order to have a half decent team.

My biggest annoyance is Iwobi. Did more than enough pre-season to warrant a place and Ozil and Welbeck return to oust him out of contention. That's massively scuppered my midfield as I'm left with Carroll (always my 5th midfielder) and Zaha who is potentially injured.

Not too sure about Danilo and Mendy - I've heard Mendy is being included in City's friendly squad for tomorrow? That's one to watch, but he easily switches out for Davies/Trippier or a couple of other 5.5 defenders. Not really a sub I want to make seeing as I'm potentially down to having only 3 active midfielders (one being my 5th midfield).

Big issue is potential price drop. Th injury announcement only exacerbates the problem

For me it's about finding the right players. Before season started everything was just guessing. Now that we know liverpool has real firepower and are at home against woeful Palace team, it's pretty clear that doubling up on pool strikers is not overboard.

ManU are also looking like really good side! And they have easy fixtures coming. So why not invest early. Thinking Lukaku+Pogba+Mkhtaryan is going to cause havoc at liberty stadium.

        So I am definetly going DeBruyne+Zaha -> Salah+Mkhtaryan 🙂

I have had a tendency to be too loyal - this season I will be less so - we have Kane, Laca, Lukaku, Morata, Jesus, Aguero, Firmino, Vardy etc up top and similar choices in midfield and at the back ... picking the plum fixtures for your heavy hitters rather than sticking or tinkering with the rest of the 4.5 mill dross could reap big rewards

          1. McEwan
            • 14 Years

Think we've all been guilty of this in the past. There is a lot of good options, and I'm comfortable that I can't have them all and hope to get onboard at the right streak!

Just have to be careful because it can quite often cost hits to get the big hitter and fix other issues. Great when you hit but it's ugly when the transfer in does nothing and your player transferred out scores a haul and has a good fixture next that you want them back.

I find a combination of trying to get a big hitter for plum home fixtures if it's a captain option and trying to carry other big hitters through tougher fixtures.

Patience is key in my experience but its easier said than done if you've had a bad gw. And I've found in the last few seasons, the waiting time on players has got shorter due to the increase in options.

Do agree with you for the most part but can also understand the knee jerking

              2. JohnnyMagrinho
                  6 years, 8 months ago

Well the issue I have is that Iwobi clearly isn't going to feature and Zaha could be out injured. That means I'm down to three in midfield.

KDB, Willian and T Carroll - Carroll is obviously my 5th midfielder. That's hardly a great place to be, having to field your last choice midfielder in 3rd place.

My defence of Kolasinac, Bertrand, Danilo and Hegazi isn't too bad, but I don't like the idea of being forced to play a WBA CB away to Burnley (although in all honesty it's not that bad).

So yes, I'll probably have to make at least one, if not two subs - even though a potential move I've mooted would cost me 8 points, and this early on that seems ridiculous.

There has to be balance and forward-thinking, but in some cases you just make a mistake and have to adapt. Iwobi was my mistake. It was between him and Mooy for me and I chose wrong. If I had made the right choice it would be so much easier for me to swap Zaha for Mhiki/Pogba or someone else (1 ITB) but now I actually might need to over commit to a change I'd rather not have to make.

But yeah, just jumping on bandwagons because they're there is ridiculous.

Depending on the fitness of Zaha, I am not planning on any moves. Only scored 58 points, but pleased with my starting XI. Would rather look forward to GW3 with 2 FTs. Feel it's a good squad, only concern I dont own Lukaku.

I watched City's friendly against WHU before the season started and it's clearly that they are in awful form and that they will be in relegation battle if they don't gain some form.
I don't think United will repeat such a good game again.

This is a great point - Southampton have a good run of fixtures and West Ham could easily blank again.

I have Forster and Bertrand but seriously considering getting rid of Kolasinac for Cedric. Arsenal looked woeful defensively and I'm not convinced over the next 4-5 GW Kola will outscore any Southampton defender.

Other issue is that I have Zaha and Iwobi, so that's not exactly helpful..

          Begovic / Elliot
          Jones / Danilo / Cedric / 4m / 4m
          KDB / Salah / Mkhi / Willian / Erikson
          Lukaku / Mounie / Chicharito

Good to go? Any changes I should make? Or save the transfer and next week change Danilo to a 5m defender and upgrade one of the 4m defenders to a 4.5m?

You could try getting Wijnaldum. Excellent at home last season and up against a struggling CP defense
Otherwise you could try the likes of Mooy, Fraser, or Redmond. All up against shaky defenses
