Dugout Discussion – Sunday – Part One

Sunday’s four matches get underway with a lunchtime double-header as champions Chelsea host Everton, while West Brom take on Stoke City at The Hawthorns.

Some Fantasy managers will be torn by the Stamford Bridge meeting. The Blues defence are well backed via Fantasy Premier League investment in David Luiz (25.9% ownership) and, of course, Marcos Alonso (18.2% ownership). T

he Spaniard heads into today’s contest off the back of his devastating two goals at Wembley against Spurs, having picked up over 245,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 3.

However, Everton’s Wayne Rooney has also soared in popularity following back-to-back goals. He claims a 20.4% ownership ahead of the Chelsea clash and is the most popular captain pick on show in the early kick-offs: 93,000 have trusted him with the armband.

Meanwhile, at The Hawthorns, there is no question of the preferred outcome from a Fantasy perspective.

West Bromwich Albion will be seeking a third successive clean sheet against Stoke and boast the Gameweek’s second most popular transfer target in their line-up.

The towering Ahmed Hegazi has picked up over 504,000 new owners ahead of today’s clash and already ranks fourth for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 4 before taking to the pitch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think you are missing the irony ... many have set their team up (value wise) with Alonso considered as an extra mid who gets clean sheet points ... effectively a 253 formation in a way, but with one mid getting clean sheets.

It is like using the old AoA chip every week 🙂

            1. Cok3y5murf
              • 7 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

I'm not missing anything. Only the points matter, however they are scored, whether it's through clean sheets, goals, assists or baps.

All defenders are better value than mids at the same price. By your logic, Hegazi is the highest scoring 'mid' costing 5.5 or under, even Mooy having scored lesser. Why shouldn't I consider Hegazi a mid then, when you consider Alonso a mid? Both have scored goals, both have got clean sheets.

Their position on the pitch is irrelevant. Only their classification in FPL matters.

                • 8 Years
                6 years, 8 months ago

By my logic - because by the end of the season
                - Hegazi will not get any where near the same points as Alonso and doesn't effectively play as a winger,
-one or two other defenders may get similar points to Alonso but you will be hard pressed to get that selection correct, and
                - no mid in his price range will get as many points as Alonso or even okay as advanced up the pitch as him
                - he is OOP as a defender and could just as easy be classed as a forward, never mind a mid

Have a chat with me after he clocks up 170 points by the end of the season and we can compare him to your mids and defenders 😉

He might be classified as a defender but he is 100% an attacking mid in the actual game of ... err ... football

                1. Cok3y5murf
                  • 7 Years
                  6 years, 8 months ago

Oh God. Read what I said. "All defenders are better value than mids at the same price".

Meaning a 5.5 defender for example, will outscore a 5.5 mid. A 7.0 defender (Alonso) will outscore a 7.0 mid. Of course Alonso will outscore Hegazi, you're comparing a 4.5 with a 7.0. Defenders are better value than mids at the same price, period.

Alonso isn't any exception. He's just like the other defenders. At 5.5, Davies or Trippier will outscore all 5.5 mids if they are played the whole season. Same goes for 5.0 defenders. So why is Alonso's positioning on the field relevant? Only his points are relevant. And no, he's not a mid or a forward. If he was, FPL would've reclassified him as one. He's a wingback. A wingback has defensive duties.

And no, it's not harder to get the selection correct. I can guarantee you that if you pick Charlie Daniels and keep him for the entire season, he will outscore any 5.0 mid.

I think you need to get out and watch some actual football lol if you don't understand where Alonso actually plays and how many defenders Chelsea play q

                        6 years, 8 months ago

Lol, but seriously - Alonso plays as a winger or left sided midfielder in front of a 3 man Chelsea defence, he tracks back but but is not a defender. Trippier, Davies, Valencia, Bertie, Rose, Walker etc are all defenders who play in a four man defence, Daniels sometimes plays in a 5 man defence and gets forward, but mainly I recall it is four at the back.

Compare Alonso with any wide man in the Premier League and his stats compare very well for shots, key chances, crosses etc, compare him to any defender and he wipes the floor with them ... the bottom line is that in real life Alonso does not play as a defender or wing back even, he is a wide attacker that tracks back and does his defensive duties and it doesn't matter what he is classified in FPL - he is not a defender. Even at other previous clubs he has played a lot of football as left midfield.

Any that's me out of this, I can see that talking about actual football is not really the thing here 😉
