The Technical Area – Firmino’s Opening Gameweeks

Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

Crazy to captain Lacazette against Bournemouth at home? Easily the best fixture on paper, but Arsenal might struggle instead of bouncing back

far too much of a punt he didnt even start and its not as if we've all seen him put 4 past a EPL team

I'm doing it. Not crazy at all. He 'will' start against Bournemouth and will want to show Wenger that benching him again is not an option.

Captaining a good striker against a team with 0 points isn't a poor idea at all. Don't ask the same question to Wenger though.

Though it could definitely work out, expecting an Arsenal reaction after all that's gone on. Bournemouth have looked awful too.

They might struggle, they might not. People will say we haven't enough data in 3 weeks but they'll also say Gooners are rubbish based on 3 weeks.
4 shots in the area, 2 on target, 1 goal - I like those numbers and the fixture.

    bottomed...

    Thoughts on Jones?

over 8 seasons only scored over 100 once (108 2011/12) 2 goals in 8 seasons, average about 65 points, and rarely plays half a season

whilst under Mourinho he's an obvious pick at 5.1, perhaps long term we are kidding ourselves that he is worth it?

Maguire/Mawson a better pick in that price range? attacking returns and more nailed with less injuries

what do we think ffs comrades?

Great value if he can stay injury free. Mourinho won't drop a defender that's bringing him CS.

I have him atm, but history tells us sooner or later he's set for a spell in the physio room, I'm thinking of swapping, not perfect fixtures, with no attacking returns and injury/rotation risk I'm getting an itchy trigger finger

    Foster, Elliot
    Bertrand, Jones, Cedric, Naughton, Mbemba
    Eriksen, Salah, Mkhitaryan, Brady, Chalobah
    Kane, Morata, Firmino

Nice team. Difficult to do. Bertrand -> Maguire (you already have Cedric), Eriksen -> Alli, Brady -> Atsu, Miki -> Pogba would all free up funds.

Would be tempted to keep as is unless you go 4-3-3

    Good WC team?

    Fabianski (Elliot)

Cedric - Jones - Kolasinac (Ward - Mbemba)

Salah - Pogba - Atsu - Knockaert (Carroll)

    Kane - Lacazette - Lukaku

Maybe worried about Atsu and Knockaert but really liking the rest of the team. As long as they could get a goal or assist once in every 3 games I would be happy. Arsenal fan myself and so Kolasinac and Lacazette are maybe fun picks but we also have good fixtures coming up.

I agree with Atsu and Knockaert being risky picks. Personally, I would switch one for Brady and downgrade the other for a 4.5 to get a strong 4th defender. A lot of the budget options this season haven't inspired me so far so personally I would rather just bet on a team getting a clean sheet than hope that a risky player scoring/assisting for a lower table team at the moment.

I think at this point he his. RLC looked to be the spark in Palace's (uninspiring) system. Carroll has failed to show that and with Sanches and Clucas in, he might continue to not produce. Not worth losing a transfer though. If you have 2 FT and no pressing transfers though, I'd might do it.

Belgium stars didn't impress at all... I watched the whole Greece-Belgium match and i need to inform you that Belgium was pretty terrible.. Lukaku was a lazy fat ass as always, waiting for the ball to come on his feet. Infact the only thing he did was to jump for the easiest header of his life, more credit goes to meunier for the perfect cross. Belgium has a lot of talent but as a team they have to improve a lot in order to succeed. Specially their wingbacks are bad defenders. Actually we should have beat them (Greece) but we are a very mediocre team with no special talent offensivly.

Belgium have a superb squad, but not a superb team

Isn't this the Belgium way? Great individuals but put them together and the quality drops? They clearly need, and have needed a really good coach to get some team spirit into them or start dropping the big names.

on paper arguably the best team in Europe, but paper is just paper , with a Mourinho/Conte type coach they could be awesome with some discipline/work ethic/focus

Yes, I note Martínez replaced hapless Wilmots, hardly inspiring

There are similarities, coaching good players to stink it up on the international stage 😆

Would be harsh on Moses but I'd expect Zappa to be phased into the XI around CL time.

When is Danny Rose back? Need to decide Davies or Toby on a WC?

Rose was due back last Christmas mate, I'd give Davies the run because of his assist/goal threat and see how long he gets

        Looking at Davies/Haz/Abraham or Toby/Brady/Morata

I'd consider Davies better than Toby so he can fit in either

City is pretty much out of the race judging by the WC teams on here. I have a feeling things will change very fast over the next couple of GWs.

such a lottery though, they'll start firing and get goals, but might take a few gws to choose the right pick, or knowing Pep we'll never know

Is Costa completely out the picture as far as Chelsea are concerned? He's available in my draft league and was considering bringing him in for Calvert-Lewin.

He's made the PL squad but not the CL squad as they don't want him cup-tied when selling in Jan.

    Mbemba reaches 100% again tonight.

Tomorrow he'll be back down to 98% and I'll wake up to sonny and chers "I've got you babe" on the radio and some bloke going on about whether punxsutawney phil can see his shadow or not.

    Night all.

Even if he rises he will not touch 4.2 needed for a profit. He is not first team and moment injured players are back he is out.

    Guys bit of advice plz...
    1.0 ITB

    Foster (Elliott)
    Alonso Bertrand Dawson (TAA Hune)
    Pogba Mkhi Salah Atsu/Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Mounie

Was thinking Kane + Mounie > Firmino + Morata
But a bit scared of Kane's GW5 to 8..(SWA wha hud BOU)..
Can you see any other moves to do get Firm in for Mounie?? I feel Firm has become essential now irrespective of fixtures..

    Thoughts plz..
