Dugout Discussion – Bournemouth vs Brighton

The Gameweek begins with a Friday night clash under lights at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth host south coast rivals Brighton in what is already a vital match for the home side.

Eddie Howe’s Cherries are simply in dismal form. They have suffered four successive defeats and have just a single goal to their name – albeit a goal of the season contender from Fantasy favourite Charlie Daniels.

Impotent in attack, Howe’s defence have also allowed 30 shots on target, more than any other side.

Such statistics will give Chris Hughton’s Brighton plenty of confidence heading into the contest, having sealed their first ever Premier League victory in Gameweek 3 with a 3-1 win over West Brom.

Pascal Gross inspired that performance with an 18-point haul made up of two goals and an assist. Fantasy managers will be fixed on his display in the number ten role tonight as the main point of interest.

Indeed, the match provides a sedate introduction to Gameweek 5, with few Fantasy assets on show.

The aforementioned Daniels is the top owned player in action. Still part of 12.7% of squads, the left-back has been sold by more than 222,000 managers over the last three Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I want Davies for Stephens and my team is leaking value. Davies rises tomorrow and Stephens drops tonight then I can't afford it.

Worth the risk now? I have my WC which I am getting closer to anyway

if you have your wc still might as well go for it because if it backfires you have your wc to use to fix it

I personally I would have taken the drop if I had the cash to get Davies in later. But Stephens isn't nailed on anymore and Davies has great fixtures, so the transfer needs to happen.

I think you should go with your gut.

Best chica replacement before he drops. 8.5m to spend so 0.1m out from getting firmino. Team below:

      Foster
      Danilo - Jones - Daniels
Mahrez- Choupo - Alli - Mkhi
      Chica - Luk - Jesus

      Mee - Carroll - Rosenoir

Considering a wildcard to sort my defence and Benteke. Thoughts?

      Foster - Elliot
      Davies - Stephens - Alexander-Arnold - Hegazi - Rangel
      Eriksen - Salah - Richarlison - Choupo-Moting - Loftus-Cheek
      Kane - Lukaku - Benteke

      1 FT, 1.6 ITB

P.S. Regarding that midfield, I have faith in Richarlison. Less so in Choupo-Moting, but he stays for now.

I am in the sense that I kept him for this week - I made three transfers and none of them was Benteke out!

    17. FPL's Luck v Skill Trade Off
      Hanked

      6 years, 7 months ago

Posted this response to the question along the lines of "FPL, luck or skill?" just as a new page was created. Interested to know what people think:

FPL is really just a platform where you can trade a market. In this market, the players are the stock and the points are the equivalent of your financial returns. There is fundamental analysis that can be done to determine the value of those stocks and fundamental news that changes the value of those stocks.

Then there are technical indicators. Those indicators are metrics that can be used in an attempt to predict the future trend or performance of those stocks.

Finally there is the same phycological challenges that an FPL manager or trader must overcome. These are the things that prevent them from executing the optimum strategy. The natural emotions or behaviours that we all have by default that prevent us from applying objectivity.

Finally, when you gamble (often) or trade (always) you are playing a game where there is a large portion of chance involved. But if you understand concepts such as expected value and standard deviation you will know that if you gamble/trade with an edge, over a statistically significant period, chance (or luck) only accounts for the volatility (deviations from the norm) and not the actual outcome over a statistically significant period.

I understand these concepts at a high level and used to practice them at a low level in regards to playing online poker for profit but I'm out of practice now.

Someone smarter than me would be able to tell you if 38 games is a significant amount of time for your edge to consistently manifest itself. My guess would be that it's not but when you look over many seasons a player with an edge would have consistent results with a few outlier seasons.

In conclusion... FPL is a market, you are a trader. There is a significant amount of chance involved but if you trade with an edge you will more often than not get a better return.

Finally, there are players that consistently crush FPL most years. They may be statistical anomalies but I suspect they have an edge and the ability to execute without deviating from their strategy due to emotion.

          I agree.

In order to win it all I would say you need to have an unbelievable run of luck that is backed by a solid strategy and a series of solid decisions.

at the end of the day, FPL is a game which encompasses the game I love. I watch MOTD, live matches , and pick my squad. Delving into stats helps sometimes, but that isn't the way to go about winning this game, or doing well in fact

Don't get me wrong, I made it sound a bit clinical. I play because I love football and it makes football even more interesting for me.

What do you think is the key to doing well? Do you think the eye test is more valuable than the statistics?

bit of both for sure. Think its important to trust your gut as well in making transfers and decisions, and at the end of the day, just enjoy it, both the highs and the lows (but especially the highs :P)

So do you think 50/50 is the incorrect balance and that 80/20 is the balance of luck and skill in the game?

Completely depends on how brainless the person is.

Colleagues of mine have taken 12 point hits that are never going to pay off, have players like Kante and Matic in their team, brought in Elneny for week 2, etc.

People like that aren't going to get lucky and finish in the top 2.5mil (50%) unless they get a better grasp at the game.

I'd say it's more like 95% / 5%. You have to understand the rules, principles and follow general guidelines. But similar to the stock market, I guess. Go into a market that you've got no idea about, and I'd say there's a 95% chance you'll fail after 38 weeks of it.

            • 7 Years

Ah, so experience seems to be the most important factor and only with more experience you'll become better at the game, you can't improve your luck. You depend more on luck if you're a casual, because you'd have little experience to make the right moves instead of the good ones.

Another great viewpoint in the debate 😉

Kante and Matic are both good 5.0 enablers that pick up clean sheets and are nailed - and both in the top 11 points earners for players 5.0 and below - very useful depending on formation

I'm not sure I could make a guess at the ratio. All I could say is that I think it's more skill than chance.

            Great topic for discussion!

I'd argue that FPL is almost all skill. I think there is an incorrect assumption of the amount of luck involved in the game. But it's difficult to accept it because for a lot of us (me included) it would mean admitting that we aren't as good at the game as we think we are.

If this is not true then they should rename the Hall of Fame to the Hall of Luck.

I believe the statistic is 90% of all people who try to invest in stocks fail. By that I mean over the course of a year or so only 10% of traders can make a profit. So, I like your analogy. It's very difficult to be one of those 10% who can consistently pick good stocks (players), and eventually do consistently well every year.

Agreed. In any market, only the top few percent have a significant edge.

I'm certainly not one of those managers who has a significant edge. I have enough to outperform the casuals quite easily but that's about it.

FPL's nothing like trading, largely because there's little to no skin in the game and psychology completely different.
I'm sure there are those with real £on the line, who play with strategy, deliberate methodology etc. But at end of the day it's paper trading and/or competing in a market with paper traders where paper traders can win.

That's a good point. You don't have to buy your positions with your hard earned cash so, it's not exactly the same but I still consider it a market in which you trade.

Personally, doing well in FPL can make me a few grand a year because I play in mini leagues where we put decent money in the middle but I mostly try to win because I find it fun.

Possibly, but the general payoff profile is incredibly skewed (no real downside to decisions) with a not very long timeframe as you suggest in the post. I agree with tactics, but not really the trading analogy. However much research we do, attaching a meaningful monetary value to every point (rather than pride, kudos) would lead very different choices.

Specifically competing in money leagues is a bit different. But yeah I also play b/c it's fun.

I think your comment about "no real downside to decisions" is true for most people, which probably lowers the bar of the average manager within the game. Would be cool if FPL done a £100 entry version of the game with a proper payout structure. Still that wouldn't be enough 'skin' to create strong emotional reactions for many. Having said that, I see a lot of the same irrational behaviour in FPL that I see in the cryptocurrency markets.

Too good of a debate for comments to go unnoticed. I agree with everything you said, I've written my own (similar) view, as a "foreigner" in less fancy words of course.

Like in everything else in life, the factor of luck decreases with increasing knowledge. FPL success is driven by decisions based on your knowledge, first of all about clubs, players, who's nailed, suspended, injured etc. These are the basics, the next step is experience and data analysis, the final factor is luck. For example, you know players A and B are big hitters, you check their stats and are similary good, they play against similary bad opponents (lots of shots and goals conceded, not many saves etc). You have a 50-50 decision to make, toss a coin and go with player A. 25 minutes into the game he gets injured, meanwhile player B gets a haul. That's luck, because you can hardly predict an injury. However season is 38 gameweeks long so these situations even themselves out. The factor of knowledge is at least around 95%, in the long run, luck is pretty irrelevant.

...and another thing. What I've noticed with my rivals is that the more a manager believes in luck, the worse he is at managing his team.

An underrated factor (along with million others to consider) is club support and optimism/pessimism of managers. One's subjective view of the team he/she supports or their rivals could crucially impact their decision making.

The same can be said for gamblers. It's more palatable for most people to blame their bad luck for failures and attribute their successes to skill.

We also tend to recall our bad luck more accurately than our good fortune.

I think she you been playing a while and you know how to play it is probably the luck factor that separates you. Anyone can follow stats or watch games and make an informed decision. I think most of us would be better than the casual players but most of us get spoon fed and make the decision off what we are being given.

Is that classed as skill? I'm not sure but I appreciate there are different views. Mine would be probably more luck over skill so long as you know how to play the game

Good point. What seperates best players between themselves? This makes luck a bigger factor. If we're talking about the top 10k as the seperating milestone, we're talking about 0.02% of all registered players. A percentage that is closely related to the percentage of luck compared to other factors in the broadest picture. If we're talking about 5mil players, how much care and effort you're willing to put in your team is the biggest factor, but when we compare number 1 and 2 in the World between each other, luck comes up to a much higher percentage of importance.

*Top 10k is 0.2% of all teams.

To finish frequently in the top 10k definitely requires more skill and knowledge than the majority who hardly ever finish in the top 10k.
And those at the top of our Hall of Fame need an even higher level of skill.
But to actually win FPL requires a great deal of luck in addition to a certain amount of skill.

There is also a difference between those who play fairly safe and consistently finish fairly high, and those who take more risks and sometimes finish even higher but also sometimes rather lower.

Funny thing is that I had exactly the same discussion with some colleagues of mine just an hour ago. We have our own mini league for fun and also a bit of cash. Most of them believed that 90% of the game is pure luck. I tend to differ and put my point across. I believe that I will have the edge when I make informed decisions rather than following bandwagons. Nice article!

Nice post. I agree - you can't control what happens on the pitch for 380 games a season, but you can use the tools available to us in order to narrow the field of viable potential returns.

It is easy to get a good high score with the information on this site. Anything lower than about 50K OR starts to get higher and higher amounts of luck involved, culminating in top 100 being impossible to plan for.

Everyone who isn't an idiot can get a decent score by following simple rules like- get in proven performers during their hot streaks, captain people like Kane and Lukaku etc. The people on here that fail are the ones that take punts and go for 'differentials'. A differential is a differential because he is a player that isn't returning points. It's that simple. It really is that simple.

As for the stockmarket, if you go for a balanced portfolio of blue chips from one or more of the world's leading exchanges (NYSE, LSE, ASX etc) and don't touch the money, over the long run (at least 20 years), you'll be looking at an annualised return of 7%. This is better than any bank interest will ever give you.

            38 hands/games -enough for top10k
            + transfer discipline + luck with injuries = top5k
            + 50/50 decisions mostly right =top1k
+ 50/50 always right + more luck(lucky fantasy assists and goals +baps)=top300 + more than you could imagine luck = NUMERO UNO

Fooling yourself a bit it's only part of the game. Thing is money isn't that important as there is always a cheaper option performing just as well and until you accept that you will always take hits to save 0.1

If are hits were equal it would be more considered but as you get a free one the best option is usually to wait.

Throw in injuries and suspensions then saved transfers actually become more valuable.

With respect to luck vs skill i look at it this way - luck will end up determining the range of possible finishes for you in a given season, your skill will determine where you finish within that range.

As for players who are regularly good at FPL, i think one thing they likely have in common is that they are able to adapt to each FPL season as well as removing emotion from decision making as far as possible.

My defence has fallen to bits. Bailly only decent one. Yoshi, Dunk and Daniels.

Part 1 of a 3 part - 4 hit has delivered with a 3 point net gain so far. How likely will Maguire keep a cs and Kane score

Got another assist tonight did he not? Created the most chances in the Bundesliga last season too. Looks decent.

Not much else around if you're shopping in that bracket and seems to be central to everything Brighton do, even if they are a fairly poor team. I think he's a good option, but then again I own him so I would say that 😉

Scott Dan is 8.5 to score anytime tomorrow. Now that's worth a punt

What are everyone's thoughts on Bavies likelihood to rise tonight? At a 92.4 now with about two hours left.

Should I just do Bertrand to Bavies now, only have enough in the bank if Bavies' value stays like that.

So close to having him but it seemed like I didn't trust myself and convinced myself that Ritchie was the better option.
