Opinion

The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 7 – Sunday

Sunday’s events did little to solve our striker problem.

We began the day scouting Alexandre Lacazette, who chose to blank in an Arsenal home match for the first time – frustrating the 265,000 who had acquired his services with the Brighton fixture in mind.

The Frenchman was also withdrawn early, with 20 minutes remaining, as Arsene Wenger handed Olivier Giroud some oxygen. That will always be an issue.

Clearly, Lacazette doesn’t fit into the same untouchable bracket as Alexis Sanchez; Wenger feels comfortable hooking and even omitting the striker from his starting line-up when he sees fit.

Combine that with the lack of away goals to this point, and it’s clear that the Gunners option has much ground to make up before we can consider him in the same bracket as Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku.

Even as a third striker, we’d have to keep Alvaro Morata and Gabriel Jesus ahead in the pecking order for now.

So where does Roberto Firmino sit in those ranks?

His omission from Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet was perhaps no big surprise; we were braced for it.

However, it arrives as another telling blow to the Brazilian’s stock at a time when we desperately needed him to show form and cement his status as a third striker.

Now we will surely continue to see his ownership and value plummet over the break, with the confidence of his 1.2 million owners broken by a run of blanks and Klopp’s selection.

Daniel Sturridge hardly passed his audition to claim the central role, and Firmino will surely be re-instated for the visit of Manchester United in Gameweek 8, regardless of his long-haul flight home.

But Liverpool’s attack are clearly faltering. They relied on the genius of Philippe Coutinho for today’s breakthrough, but it’s not the chance creation that’s broken – it’s purely their finishing.

The numbers show that Klopp’s attack have averaged 20 goal attempts over their last two Gameweeks, with three big chances per match. But only 20% of their efforts have hit the target, compared with 41% from Gameweeks 1-5.

Sturridge wasn’t the solution, and Firmino will return, but is the damage already done?

There will be some who end up holding Firmino just because of the lack of alternatives: we have Jamie Vardy and a cast of mis-firing, inconsistent candidates at 8.5 or below.

Just like Lukaku, we may look for a change but arrive at Gabriel Jesus as the only route.

The Brazilian is clearly an extremely credible candidate, with the fixtures to fly. But he’s also a player who – by his own recent admission – was playing the role of a “winger” or not playing at all when Sergio Aguero was fit.

We can settle on Jesus for now, but few of us will believe that it’s for keeps.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Switch docoure to a 4.5 and choupo to Fellaini then upgrade Fernandez. Or upgrade Choupo to someone like Ritchie. I mean, it's not particularly consequential: none of those cheapo players are really going to deliver very much. They odd assist is all you can expect.

    Hazard, alli, choupo moting, groß
    Kane, morata, vardy,

Being an impatient S.O.B I really want some news on Morata's injury, trigger finger hovering over Aguero > Morata or Jesus but know as soon as I bring in Jesus, Morata will be declared fit.

Should I wait or is it looking likely that Morata will be out for a while?.

People are really impatient here. Talk of dumping Salah and Lukaku when they've been some of the most consistent players in the game. I understand it: I used to be the knee jerkiest jerky jerkoff this side of jerkistan, but I've decided to keep a cool head this year and that strategy currently has me ranked at 50k. 11 of my 88 points last gameweek were brought to me by the useless KdB. Chill people, chiiiiiillllll.

Not knee jerks it's a change in the fixtures coming up.. and Silva offers more than Salah in a better team scoring more goals in a better team..

Doing it for Silva is understandable but your taking a big risk by not waiting

I made this point yesterday, especially when it's an ib and we've already seen Pogba and Kun pickup midweek injuries.

And yes, swapping and changing top class players like these is asking for trouble. Salah blanked this week but Coutinho scored a screamer. Next week, Coutinho may do nothing and Salah could score 2 and pee will be on here cursing Salah and Coutinho cause the swapped them for -4

Just because something worked out for you, doesn't mean it's the way ahead for everyone.

You completely missed my point. Salah and Lukaku are class players who have so far shown no reason to be dropped. They are still likely to deliver in big games. It's this rush to drop those sort of players that I find absurd especially when chasing last week's big haul.

They might be playing a different game with a different idea in mind. Saying that a player shouldn't be dropped just because he has performed well till now is not a completely acceptable idea. I don't find it too bizarre except for the fact that the International games are yet to be played.

That's fair enough. Everybody has their own way of playing and my success is far more down to dumb luck than brilliance. But I thought I'd give my view as someone who has really benefitted from a patience that I've never shown before.

I get it mate. It's a good thing that you shared it. I just posted the other side of the argument here because this is the best thread to do so. Good luck for the season.

Seeing a lot of Hazard in teams. Is he back in form? Probably between him and Morata for my me.

He wasn't great V City but Chelsea looked tired after the Madrid game where he was phenomenal, I've bought him in

Would you sell Jones or Cedric to get Azpilicueta? Leaning towards getting rid of Jones and bringing him back in for Cedric in GW 12.

David Silva for choice; KDB if you somehow have money coming out of your ears to spend; everyone else is rotation risks. Of those ones, Sterling then Sane.

With a little help from the community I have decided to do Firm + Foster to Jesus/Morata + Pereira (3.9).

Next question is who to get?

    A) Morata (if fit)
    B) Jesus

My only concern is the return of Aguero as I will rather have him than Jesus. Obviously im not making the move until after the IB, but it would nice to get your input, if you are willing to do so.

NB: No Chelsea or City players in the squad atm

I have a similar concern, but personally planning a -8 to get Sterling, Silva & one of the two. I'm leaning towards Morata if declared fit, but in your case I'd definitely go Jesus - no City attacking cover would scare me a lot more than no Chelsea next week.

    A) Morata & Salah > Kane & Sterling
    B) Morata & Firmino > Kane & Long (NEW, WBA, bri, BUR in next 4)

    Thoughts on these?

Dont get Morata out before a great run of games.. imo
