The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 8

Manchester City are threatening to break Fantasy Football.

An irresistible attacking force, they appear to be capable of skittling any defence that stands in their way and, in doing so, they are presenting Fantasy managers with an extraordinary array of options.

The challenge, of course, is to exploit their incredible form to the full. This becomes a more thankless task with the passing of each and every Gameweek.

Today’s 7-2 victory over a shell-shocked Stoke City took Pep Guardiola’s side to a total of 17 goals from their last three home matches and 24 from the last five Gameweeks.

I had to go back and re-check those numbers, leaving me wonder if we’ve ever seen a single team provide such a relentless avalanche of Fantasy points.

The underlying statistics are even more staggering.

A tally of 103 shots, 73 of which have arrived in the box with 28 big chances. Guardiola’s side have fired a shot every 4.6 minutes over the past five Gameweeks.

Three City players scored double figures in today’s victory, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva also fetching nine and seven points respectively. And this without Sergio Aguero in the mix.

Indeed, the array of choice available has become bewildering.

Raheem Sterling’s 15-points surely underlines his potential during this, his most prolific spell of his career. The “winger” has now scored six goals and supplied two assists over five starts in the last six Gameweeks.

Sterling has been in Guardiola’s starting line-up each time when available from Gameweek 3 onwards and, priced at just 8.0; he surely justifies his rank at the top of our midfield Watchlist. He is already the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9’s visit from Burnley.

Then there is Sane.

Perhaps a more traditional wide player, less inclined to tuck inside to flank the central striker, the German has produced four goals and three assists from the last five Gameweeks. However, he has only made the starting line-up over the last three.

De Bruyne and Silva remain the creators. Less explosive, they are nonetheless consistent points scorers that also scream for our attention. The latter struck his first goal of the season today, while De Bruyne chalked up a fifth assist.

It’s difficult to separate the pair, but Silva’s price, at 1.5 cheaper, is surely a key factor. Crucially, as today’s goal indicated, the Spaniard also appears to have upped his direct threat to opponents, adding a new convincing string to his creative bow.

These are just the standout midfield offerings. When we start to contemplate the situation up front, our decision process becomes even more cloudy.

Gabriel Jesus reacted to Sergio Aguero’s return from injury with a brace and a 13-point return today. We now have to consider how Guardiola will marry the pair.

He will surely want to avoid disrupting the almost perfect blend he has discovered, and neither Sane nor Sterling can really warrant exclusion.

Could that lead to Guardiola rotating his two central strikers, or will he revert back to pairing them in attack, sacrificing one of his support attackers?

Jesus owners will be counting today’s points but also looking ahead to the Gameweek 9 meeting with Burnley and wondering Pep’s next move.

But surely we have to question whether Jesus and Aguero warrant our investment regardless.

Even if their minutes are managed from here on, while City’s thirst for goals remains unquenchable, perhaps we just can’t lose.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      If it was in open play no one would blink an eye. Clear foul. Clipped his foot and nudged him in the thigh. Foul.

    Thoughts on bringing the lie detector into the game?

    With the introduction of goal line technology surely the next step is for the fourth official to wheel a lie detector out. It would only take 3-5 minutes to sit the player down and interrogate him if he took a dive or not.

    1. Jasօn
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 6 months ago

      When will it stop? Will we have offside goals cancelled out post game? Maybe a penalty goal scrubbed off because of a missed dive?

      Nah, technology is good when applied correctly. I love goal line tech, they should have had it 10 years ago.

    Interesting to see the latest meltdown on Arsenal Fan TV, I genuinely don't see myself picking any Arsenal assets this season on FPL.

    Anyone else agree?

      They fielded a very weak side so I wouldn't read too much into the result. Still, they need Sanchez and Ozil firing in order to perform.

      Have not owned any so far, and that's not likely to change soon. Fortunately, FPL helps give me an excuse to focus on other matches.

    Is Diouf a terrible pick? Nice fixtures, cheap, and looks nailed. I'm tempted. Tell me why I shouldn't be.

        Considered it but is he really an upgrade? Costs more, has worse fixtures and Stoke score more goals.

          Abraham has scored 4 of the 5 Swansea goals so far. Swansea might be very blunt in attack, but when they score, you can count on Abraham to be involved.
          Similar argument to other relegation fighting strikers/CAMs of the past

            True but he might have to share pitch time with Bony. Diouf gets 90 mins every game.

    Lovren should play vs Lukaku every week... then he will look like a world class cb (lol). My wc went well except one big flaw (Pedro instead of Sterling) but that Liverpool defense showing was kind of an consollation, as i predicted before hand Lukaku would not get many chances vs a resillient Liverpool team at home. Lessons learned; i got that one right but did a blunderous mistake not getting Sterling, which in my case was the difference between a successful and a ok ish wc. Catching up my ml leader so can´t complain and or 600k ish with 5 players to gain points left, 3 defenders all right but with decent chances of both geting cs and or goals/assist (Cedric, Vvd and Dunk) Coutinho´s 3 pointer benchwankery and Vardy to top it off on mnf.

      To be fair Lukaku was isolated and was marked by 2+ pool defenders each time the ball was lumped up his way... I would say it was more the lack of attacking desire of united than a good solid Lovren performance 🙂

        totally agree,as a Liverpool supporter i was just beeing a tad sarcastic on the expense of Lovren. My point in advance (with a few others) was that this was quite predictable, as Liverpool tend to dominate at home and letting few chances away and United which we knew would come to get a stalemate point there, leaving Lukaku with no help.

    Alonso to Otamendi maybe?

    Or should I keep my city slots for attack and get silva (already have jesus and sterling)

    I have a few options in attack right now to get more City cover than Silva.

    What do you think of these?

    A) Firmino + Brady ---> Jesus + Carroll (Carroll will be 5. mid)

    B) Firmino + Coutinho ---> Jesus + Sterling

    C) Firmino + Eriksen --> Aguero + Sterling

    D) Firmino + Eriksen --> Jesus + Sterling

    Is it worth going for 3 City players or should I just settle with Silva + Jesus?
