This Much We Know – Gameweek 11

Manchester City players line up to kill off their rivals, but picking the prime suspect is still proving problematic for Fantasy managers. Midfield marauders stake their captaincy claims, but the most popular asset in the game is shedding owners at pace. Here is my latest attempt to sort the red herrings from the red devils.

It’s murder on the Etihad express

Not content with potentially having the Premier League wrapped up before we unwrap Christmas, Pep Guardiola now wants to see the upper echelons of the FPL standings all decked in sky blue. And we do mean all.

The Citizens have yet to be repelled, scoring more than one goal in every Premier League match except the Everton encounter (which featured Kyle Walker’s early bath) and the recent controlled dismissal of Chelsea.

What is more astounding, though, is the range of players who continue to contribute (despite the well-publicised rotation) to the slaying of their opponents, with at least five attacking returns so far from seven different players, all the way down to £5.2 million Fernandinho’s two goals and three assists.

Ironically, while six City players got in on the act against Arsenal, it was the much-vaunted Leroy Sane who took a back seat this week, although notably he did start his tenth match of City’s last 11 in all competitions and seems as bulletproof as any of Pep’s attackers ever can be.

Once more, owners of Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus were left conflicted about whether to celebrate another goal apiece or lament the strikers’ ongoing job share, while the 100,000+ managers who had drafted in Nicolas Otamendi were rewarded with just one point and an enforced “rotation” away to Leicester City following his fifth booking of the season.

Mahrez is partying like its 2015

Speaking of the Foxes, it was a fourth consecutive attacking return for Riyad Mahrez as both Leicester and the Algerian personally maintained their recent good form.

It’s fair to say that he’s still some way off hitting the heights of his breakout and title-winning season, but let’s not forget that Leicester’s first six matches this season featured four of the last season’s top five sides.

Since then, only Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and the City duo of Sane and Kevin De Bruyne can better Mahrez’s four attacking returns.

Whether he can continue that streak against three of the league’s tightest defences (City, Spurs and Burnley) in the next four weeks remains to be seen, although his owners will surely be tempted to retain his services through to the trip to the London Stadium in Gameweek 13.

We’re loving Dyche’s dependable defence

Which brings us to the Clarets, tucked in seventh place, level with Arsenal and Liverpool on points, and with five clean sheets in 11 matches.

Burnley’s defensive assets, while lacking in attacking flair thus far (aside from Stephen Ward’s goal and assist earlier in the season), are at least the model of reliability when it comes to their primary duties.

Ward, Matt Lowton and Ben Mee all find themselves in the top four for points per million. Furthermore, with so much frustration at defensive rest and rotation among the “bigger sides”, that trio – plus James Tarkowski – have completed all but ten minutes of Premier League action, providing an unrivalled level of consistency and comfort.

One enforced change was, of course, Nick Pope replacing the unfortunate Tom Heaton in Gameweek 4. However, it has proved very much like for like, with Pope actually recording saves and bonus points more regularly (every 18 minutes and every 98 minutes respectively) than the man he replaced (22 minutes and 150 minutes).

Let’s hope that Dyche doesn’t have his head turned by paper talk and depart Turf Moor. Stability all round is what’s required in the Clarets camp.

Somehow, somewhere, it’s all gone Rom

When it comes to defensive mindsets, Dyche seems more like Kevin Keegan when compared to the bus parker supreme, Jose Mourinho.

We all predicted that there would be very little to write home about as Manchester United entered a run of fixtures featuring three of their title rivals and an aggregate of two goals scored or conceded over those three matches proved the point.

The player who suffered most from this decidedly anti devil may care attitude was Romelu Lukaku, whose two assists in the last four matches is failing to stem the tide of heavy sales.

Whether it’s the Mourinho effect or the absence of Paul Pogba, a comparison of Lukaku’s first four matches to his last four is frightening, with most of the key statistics down by two thirds during that recent lull.

Owners who have gritted their teeth in anticipation of enjoying Lukaku’s emergence into the light at the end of this tunnel will be expecting significant returns against Newcastle and Brighton; sides that, lest we forget, both rank in the top six for restricting their hosts’ shots in the box.

Itchy fingers will be poised to jettison the Belgian should his dry run continue and with form, fixtures and finances turning in Alvaro Morata’s favour, Lukaku may not cross the Watford gap for many managers in Gameweek 14.

We should embrace a front and centre Salah

As one in red flounders, so another prospers.

Liverpool’s Salah helped himself to a pair of goals and a season-high haul against an obliging West Ham from a new central role. He now sits second to only Kane and Aguero in the Golden Boot race and has well and truly spanked the sellers who gained any satisfaction from his blank against Manchester United.

Whether or not he retains a striker’s role, or whether the Anfield penalty wheel of fortune comes around to him again, the Egyptian’s goal threat remains almost unrivalled. Only Kane (39) has unleashed more attempts in the box than Salah (32), while he is (perhaps surprisingly) unmatched when it comes to shots on target (24).

As with City, we can expect Liverpool’s goals to be shared, but Salah appears less vulnerable to rotation and benefitted from Sadio Mane’s return to the tune of two assists.

Those of us who captained Kane cast covetous glances in the direction of Salah’s 15 points this weekend. The dilemma now is not whether we should include him in our squads, but whether he should be trusted with the armband anon.

It’s advantage Murray

Last week, I examined the merits of a handful of budget “enablers” in the form of Glenn Murray, Mame Biram Diouf and Tammy Abraham.

Gameweek 11 proved a mixed bag for the trio, with Swansea City struggling to create chances for Chelsea’s on-loan Under 21 England man and Diouf shuffled back out wide for Stoke City.

Murray, though, continued to justify Chris Hughton’s faith by notching the winner against the toothless Swans, his fourth goal in three games.

With Pascal Gross and an increasingly confident Anthony Knockeart pulling the strings, Murray’s ageing legs aren’t proving a problem, while his finely-tuned goal scoring instincts are bearing fruit.

With a “derby” clash with former club Crystal Palace looming in Gameweek 13, the script is written for Murray to maintain his scoring streak and emerge as the optimum solution for those ploughing funds into midfield.

Lads, I have a question that I may be overthinking, but would love to hear your thoughts.

Let's say someone takes a shot, the goalkeeper saves it, and it hits the post. The rebound falls to a player who has been standing in an offside position when the kick was taken. He puts it into the back of the empty net.

Is the goal allowed or disallowed?

So I will say that the decision in this match ended up being that the goal was disallowed, and while it was the team I was rooting for, my first instinct was that it was offside, as in my eyes the play does not reset after the ball hits the post...but others thought that the ball hitting the post began a different play in which the player is now considered onside (do you guys understand what I'm trying to say?). With this in mind, what do you guys think? I'm still leaning to disallowed myself with my view on the ball hitting the post.

"Gaining an advantage If the ball is played into the penalty area and he plays the ball that rebounds to him off a post, crossbar or an opposing defender, then the attacker is offside as they have gained an advantage by being in that position."

Boom. There it is. Cheers TM!

Anyone think Gundogan coming back threatens the minutes of Silva and KDB? There's been talk of how they don't get rested/rotated, but City have huge fixture congestion from now to the end of the year (2 games/week all the way) and Gundogan started in place of Silva away vs Napoli last week

Thoughts on what to do this week? 2FT 1.1 ITB
Considering Bringing in Jones for Otamendi and De Gea for Foster and doubling up on United Defence.

    Foster, Elliot
Otamendi, Lascelles, Mee , Naughton, Simpson
    Salah, Sterling, Groß, RLC, TC
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

    Any Other Suggestions?

Ok think I’ve cracked it. PRMWCT

    De Gea
    Alonso. Jones. Daniels. Dann. Mee
    Alli. Mane. Salah
    Kane. Morata

    (Speroni. Niasse. Surman. RLC

Solid bench, 8 premium players (2 Man U, 2 Chelsea, 2 spurs, 2 Liv) plus Dann, Daniels & Mee (fixtures & value)

Big thing is no city, but honestly I think that’s a viable tactic given heavy rotation inevitable over next 2 months

Decided against moving early on Jones. His injury would be a disaster for my defense already with Ota, Davies, Mbemba, Morgan, Kola

Lukaku's drop is welcoming. What about the following moves?
    Davies+ Morgan + Jesus to Jones + Daniels + Lukaku (-4)?

Good moves? Daniels or Mee? Will get both eventually.

16 transfers here (-28 points in hits overall).

My major failing this season (apart from being really unlucky with 50/50 calls, which can't be legislated for) was overreacting every time something unexpected happened, instead of going for the obvious move.

Wow, that's a lot too mate. I'd be 18 but I've made two already to catch the Sane rise today (really wanted him!). Hits really worked out for me last season finishing top 5k but this years it's been a bit of a shocker!

Same, even hits that have ostensibly 'worked' (Sanchez to Sterling and Lukaku to Kane last week) ended up costing me points. That particular hit on its own was actually a net +- of 0 and I'm happier with my team now, but if I hadn't done it I'd have captained Salah instead of Kane and have been 13 points better off. Plus I'd have made the same moves this week for free, so another 4 points!

This week would have been fine apart from not owning Salah! Happy enough with my team and have Kane + Alli in now for Spurs nice run of hoping that pays off!. Vardy is my only real issue at the minute but might persist with him for another couple of weeks.

Yeah, certainly. There are plenty of ways to succeed at this game. But I think, in the long run, season over season, it's just good not to start the week in a hole. But things still could shift this season in favor of the hits takers.

I took -196pts in hits last year and finished 16.6k which is a pretty decent rank I think. I have slowed the hits so far this year but pretty much almost all of my hits this year have backfired. Problem is being patient is backfiring for me too !!! Haha just a rough year so far.

Any thoughts on the Newcastle defense? Own Lascelles and think I should move on. They keep things very quiet but have that annoying habit of conceding a goal.

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 6 months ago

Yep, they're a good, organised defensive side who don't allow many shots. Unfortunately the few they do allow end up going in in annoying 1-0 defeats 😆

Lascelles owner here too, have been doubling up with Elliot these past 3 GWs out of necessity more than anything else.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

At least I'm happy for the money gained on Lascelles since I bought him at 4.5, can now move him on to Mee.

I don't play Elliot at all though, well not since GW5 anyway. Lascelles was brought in for his goal threat and those decent fixtures against sides that can't score too much but these last two losses against Burnley and Bournemouth have annoyed me. He's 4.7m too.

    2. Rainer
      • 7 Years

Rafa will result in plenty of clean sheets but don't fancy doubling with Elliot. Better defenders at 4.4-4.9m as well. No rush in selling him but I'd prefer Bur/Bha/Bou/Moreno over one of their defenders.

      1. fedolefan
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, as I replied above, I just don't play Elliot. Lascelles is there for his goal threat and baps in the chance they concede. Already own defenders/keepers from Bur/Bha/Bou but Moreno, Pieters or a Burnley double-up I've been looking at.

He's not a worry but a frustration. Him and Dann (don't ask) are in for the odd rotation and benching based on form. They have goal threat, and have no rotation threat around Xmas. Don't lose out too much if they concede since most end up playing Elliot anyway.

    Jones & Bailly (New)
    Moreno (Sou)
    Ward (Swa)

It also means benching Richarlison (he has a home game anyway) and 1 of Jesus, Murray, Sterling, Sane, Salah or Kane. Or should I just bench 1 of Moreno and Daniels?

Yes is a real benching headache at the moment. Richarlisons home form has hardly compared to his away form, I was just thinking that he has the lowest potential points returns out of my mids and attackers. Maybe I should just pt Murray 1st sub even after just getting him in?

Yeah but I prefer a benching headache to having a crap bench! Got Duffy off my bench last week for example. What do you think of my current squad mate, having gotten rid of my expensive defenders (Alonso, Davies & Bellerin) over the past few weeks?

I like it better as I was never a fan of expensive defenders (Alonso last year was the exception). I prefer your Sane to my Sterling and your Gross to my Choupo-Moting.

The only thing I would say is it lacks Salah 😉

P.S. I'm still kicking myself for selling Ramsey. He was such a good pick on my wildcard ahead of his good run of form, if only I had kept the faith!

I should have held Ramsey also but I'm not convinced he'll be the best pick long term with o many mids coming onto the radar, would prefer to have Zaha for exaple atm!
You're right about Salah, I'm just hoping he calms down a bit for a couple of gameweeks til I decide what to do with Vardy!
He was in my pre-season team 99% of the time as he was looking immense in pre-season, but went KDB last minute instead!

Alright lads so here is a further technicality to the goal I mentioned a few posts up.

So it turns out that when the shot was taken by who we shall call Player A, Player B was onside. The ball hits the keeper, hits the post, and falls to Player B in an offside position, who shoots, and scores.

So here is where I am finding it a bit difficult to distinguish whether or not this goal should be allowed. The FIFA rule says (as per BBC): "However, a player does not necessarily have to touch the ball to influence play. They are still offside if, in the opinion of the referee, they are judged to be gaining an advantage If the ball is played into the penalty area and he plays the ball that rebounds to him off a post, crossbar or an opposing defender, then the attacker is offside as they have gained an advantage by being in that position."

This I find confusing because it does not necessarily give any information as to the position of the attacker when the ball was kicked that ended up rebounding off the post to the attacker that is now indisputably in an offside position, but not necessarily at the initial kick.

Furthermore, as per TM's link: https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_11_offside_en_47383.pdf
Look at page 23 and page 24. The visual (pg 23) states that a player B who was offside when the initial kick was taken is considered offside when the ball deflects off the keeper and into his stride. The visual in pg 24 states that the player B who was onside when the initial kick was taken and then runs onto the ball from an onside position is considered onside. But it does not necessarily have a case for when the player B is onside when the initial kick is taken, but then receives the ball (and scores) in an offside position after two deflections of the ball.

What do you guys think? Goal or no goal?

How is Player B offside when you said he was onside?

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

Isn't that the question here? 😆

The scenario is basically this. Player A shoots (at this time Player B is in an onside position). The ball is saved, hits off the post, and falls to Player B who is now in an offside position. Player B scores.

Should the goal be allowed or disallowed?

That summed it up perfectly. So it turns out my team were at the hands of injustice 😆

When I found out that he was onside when the ball was kicked, I thought it was a goal. But, "However, a player does not necessarily have to touch the ball to influence play. They are still offside if, in the opinion of the referee, they are judged to be gaining an advantage If the ball is played into the penalty area and he plays the ball that rebounds to him off a post, crossbar or an opposing defender, then the attacker is offside as they have gained an advantage by being in that position" confused me because it did not provide any information as to where the player was when the ball that rebounded was originally kicked, thus implying that being offside off the rebound at the end of the play was an advantage in itself. Do you get what I mean?

Was that a goal or offside in the video?

The guy doesn't do the best job of describing it because it seems he's contradicting his visual at first, but essentially Young would be called offside if he was offside when the ball left RVP(?)'s foot, but not at the moment of the deflection (I think the implication is that this is the case if he was onside initially, as he was in the video? I don't know mate, I might be overthinking these 😆 )

Essentially I think it counted as a goal, or at least that's what the video says...maybe I'm just confusing myself but the narrator's description of "not at the moment of the deflection" doesn't suggest anything about where the player was prior to or after the deflection...which almost suggests a fresh play is occurring when the deflection takes place, and FIFA rules suggest this is not the case.

                  I need aspirin.

The post isn't a player plus it's a backwards pass if it was. It's an old video but doubt anything has changed. Treat it like RVP passing to Young without the post.

And if you treat it as such, it is a goal. And therefore, my team were robbed. I am not going to think any further about this because my brain is slowly frying. 😆

Cheers though TM, it's been an interesting topic to look into.

Oh, and apparently the Young goal was given as offside 😆 not even going to bother confusing myself further on that one, let's just call that refereeing error based on our new definition. 🙂

Still a goal, was onside when the ball was played.

Which would make sense. But then, "They are still offside if, in the opinion of the referee, they are judged to be gaining an advantage If the ball is played into the penalty area and he plays the ball that rebounds to him off a post, crossbar or an opposing defender, then the attacker is offside as they have gained an advantage by being in that position."

And like I said, this I find confusing because it does not necessarily give any information as to the position of the attacker when the ball was kicked that ended up rebounding off the post to the attacker that is now indisputably in an offside position, but not necessarily at the initial kick. Do you get what I mean?

What you've quoted doesn't contradict the fact that the player was onside when the shot was taken, which is all that matters surely.

It doesn't contradict it but (at least from the way I'm reading it) it seems to imply that the attacker is at an advantage simply by receiving the rebound in an offside position, and therefore the attacker is offside.

Poorly written if you ask me (I think the distinction of being onside when the ball was kicked and then offside when received should be described within the rule of rebounds), or maybe I'm just not interpreting it correctly.

Team mates pass is the only thing that counts. If you are good enough to play for a rebound off opponent or post for your team mate then that's a bonus.

I would think it means if he was offside to begin with (i.e. offside position but not interfering with play when the shot is taken - however, gaining an advantage later from the way the ball bounces to him).

I agree with you, though this isn't necessarily explicitly stated in the definition, and that's why I don't like the description of it...I feel that it leaves certain aspects of the play up to assumption, and a defined rule should not do that.

Now granted, this rule is taken by BBC from the context of the FIFA rule book, so the context prior to this quote may have included the setting of the initial kick, but the quote in itself does not define this well enough, and that may be a fault of BBC rather than FIFA. Do you get what I mean?

Yeah, I just think you're over-interpreting it probably. To my mind it's a clarification that you're still offside if you benefit from the rebound.

    Who to get
    A) mahrez or sterling
    B) Vertonghen or Daniels

Mahrez is showing good form and I already own sane so doubling up on city is ok ??
Spurs have good fixtures although Daniels has a attacking threat.
    Very confusing

    Thoughts on this team?
    Should I save the transfer?

    GK: De Gea (Elliot)
DEF: Azpilicueta / Jones / Daniels / Ward (Duffy)
    MID: Salah / Sane / Richarlison / GroB (Loftus-Cheek)
    FWD: Kane / Morata (Abraham)

    2M in the bank...

    Cheers 🙂

Feels like a brag to me 😛

Although...i'd be tempted to play the M City roulette...rotating Aguero with MOrata..and I would also consider upgrading Ward to Kola / Valencia / Duffy.

Doulbing up on Man U defence seems like good idea with 8 CS already

      Looks like 442.

Stones to Azpi seems obvious choice. Gotta get some of that Chelsea love...

Injuries permitting, is it safe to assume that Mourinho will return to a back 4 vs. Newcastle, with Smalling benched?

It seems that Smalling has been used for the top 6 type matches. So yes but I don't think we can say for sure
