Men In Black – Gameweek 16

Our brand new series, plundering the new Referee data soon to be available to our members, continues with an analysis of the Gameweek 16 appointments.

We scan the assignments and attempt to pick out the key pairings, assessing the data to decipher the potential impact of certain whistlers on their respective fixtures and the players in line to either suffer or benefit as a result.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I've had a look at some charts and am pretty confident there's going to be some pretty large accumulations. However Liverpool usually avoids lots of snow due to the coastal location, Manchester due to the urban warming effect and being in a valley. Travel & safety issues are of far more concern than the pitches themselves.

      Tomorrow's games are 99% fine.

Sunday I'd guess at a postponement risk of:

      Liverpool vs Everton - 15%
      United vs City - 10%

Liverpool vs Everton slightly more likely purely due to it being the early game and thus travel networks having less time to sort themselves out. Both are helped by the games being derbies.

If Burnley or Huddersfield were at home on Sunday then you'd be looking at more towards 90% postponement risk...

Men in black - don't like this article, predicting what decisions a ref might makeI'd just stupid.

Yup. Felt a bit weird reading through the whole article 🙂 .. The red card stats are an OK takeaway though

Decisions shouldn't be made on the likelihood of a penalty being given I agree. You can look at the stats both ways. 'he's given one penalty in 7 games, he doesn't give penalties' or he's given 1 penalty in 7 games, he's due to give a penalty.' It's a pointless stat.

Also its not being looked at who these fouls are being given against. Maybe Ref A has reffed 4 games for the highest fouling team in the league and Ref B has reffed 4 games for the lowest fouling team in the league. Now Ref A is reffing the lowest fouling team in the league, who's to say he will now have no opportunities to give frees against the low fouling team.

I get the aim here but I feel there's factors that's aren't being considered such as which teams were reffed by which refs in the past

      1. noquarternt
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 4 months ago

This without a shadow of a doubt.

This ref has given 10 red cards more compared to that ref. The Outcome Bias here seems to suggest he'll keep giving out red cards. So many other factors come into play, which teams he's refereed in the past, whether he always gets heated derbies etc. What's more likely to happen is he'll produce less red cards and revert to the league's average (but there are so many factors we can't hold for), the sample size is so small that it is essentially meaningless.

There's some refs that give more penalties. There's history with certain teams and certain refs both good and bad. It has potential.

Planned gw17 move is Daniels and Niasse to Femenia and DCL -4. Just had a thought, with Femenia's bappage and Burnley being Bradyless, would I be better off bringing the Daniels to Femenia move forward a gw?

No, but may look at Daniels vs Maguire. Pretty sure Pool score, CPL less likely vs Bournmouth

I'm going Salah because Liverpool have been scoring a ridiculous amount of goals and Spurs haven't.

That´s true and a Merseyside derby can be a goal fest. I will go Salah, thanks!

Mmmm...just feel like city aren't keeping many CS so were relying on ota to keep scoring at the rate he has to match the likely CS of Chelsea (which I think is unlikely). Maguire is my other potential fall guy...

You're right, but the scoring method is so heavily biased towards def's who can score that Ota is the one, unless...

Posted this as a reply but thought I'd put it up as a post, my take on the weather situation (I'm only an amateur enthusiast :D) :

I've had a look at some charts and am pretty confident there's going to be some pretty large snow accumulations.

If Burnley or Huddersfield were at home on Sunday then you'd be looking at more towards a 90% postponement risk...

Altitude - more of a factor for Huddersfield but Burnley is almost certainly getting much more snow than Salford

        Infrastructure

        Travel distances for away fans

And dare I mention, 'club size'

But mainly it's the localised nature of UK weather

Tbh 90% was a figure I threw out there as it didn't matter (no BUR or HUD match on Sun)

Would still be pretty likely though especially for HUD. Shame Oldham aren't at home on Sunday 😀
