Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

Tuesday evening treats us to four more fixtures, as Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham prepare for their first matches of double Gameweek 22.

The big news is that Harry Kane starts on the bench at the Liberty Stadium.

Having headed into Monday’s deadline as a doubt, the Spurs striker has been handed the Fantasy Premier League captaincy by a relatively low 24.2% of managers. However, over 121,000 also played their Triple Captain chip on Kane after he produced back-to-back hat-tricks in his previous two Gameweek appearances. They will now hope that he gets used from the bench tonight and that he can deliver big against West Ham in 48-hours time.

Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli are also among the top 13 armband picks and all start in Wales, with Fernando Llorente leading the attack against his former club. Indeed, Son was the top transfer target for Gameweek 22, acquired by 498,000+ new owners on the back of four goals and as many assists in six starts.

Despite a run of five strikes in as many matches, just 17,000 have placed their faith in West Ham’s form player, Marko Arnautovic.

Nonetheless, that output hasn’t gone unnoticed – he was brought in by over 368,000 for a Gameweek that sees him entertain West Brom at the London Stadium before making his way to Wembley later in the week. Interestingly, however, he looks to have dropped back to a support role behind the lone striker Andy Carroll.

Elsewhere, John Stones, David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling all return to the Man City XI for a plum home clash against Watford.

Aguero’s tally of 20 points in a 6-0 win over the Hornets back in Gameweek 5 remains the highest individual haul of the season. With Gabriel Jesus sidelined for a month at the very minimum, he now has the opportunity to audition for our three-man frontlines ahead of visits from both Newcastle and West Brom before the end of January.

Sterling, meanwhile, has bagged double-digit hauls in each of his last three starts to move into second place in the FPL player standings behind Mohamed Salah.

Kevin De Bruyne also starts for the hosts as he recovers from the Jason Puncheon challenge that forced him off at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Southampton and Crystal Palace square up at St Mary’s in the other Tuesday fixture.

With a goal or assist in four of the last six outings, the Eagles’ Wilfried Zaha is the form player in this one. Yet the home side will be buoyed by Saturday’s goalless draw at Old Trafford which helped them to a first clean sheet since Gameweek 9.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Whoever runs the FPL account is a proper WUM. Remember them putting up McAuley picks every time he got a dodgy goal awarded last season just to troll people.

Would Christensen to Jones be good move before Jones price rise (doubt he will play in cup) rather than double Chelsea defence?

His points are due to dry up soon enough and is bit of rotation risk. Although wouldn't mind upgrading Vardy to Aguero, so saving money would be beneficial...

He has produced regularly, of late. By the law of averages he won't continue in this manner.

Dry up, law of average etc. is all a myth. By that logic Sterling and Salah should have dried up ages ago. Each game is a fresh start no matter what has previously.

Yes, but Sané and Sterling are different fish altogether. I'd bet my bottom dollar that Lingard doesn't maintain anywhere near this level of scoring...

He shouldn't, but is. FPL has many perceived under achievevers and many over achievers.

                      It happens every season.

Maybe Lingard is becoming one of those fish, I certainly hope so. Looks like only a severe reduction in playing time would hamper his output atm and that looks unlikely imo.

So, at the start of 2018:

3 Defenders with points over 100.

3 Forwards with points over 100.

10 midfielders with points over 100 - and that's with big names Sanchez, Hazard, Pobga, Mane under 100 so far.

Really isn't the year for strikers is it?

    Long live the midfield.

History says things always even out, at least a little bit. I'll be jumping on 3 big hitters up front soon to try and get ahead of the curve. Kane, Kun, Morata assuming Morata does decent this week and vs Leicester

Team before free hit would be on 19 with morata Christensen to go

Or 28 -8 With Kane Arnie son left

My FH team is 45 with son (c) Kane eriksen lanzini Arnie Adrian

Although not great scores I'd say it's been justified barring a morata Christensen masterclass

And if he doesn't sit atleast on the bench on Friday I guess the show is over and it's time to remove him from my team.

Can we stop saying you can only compare FH as a success to your original team?

The whole point of FH is to start fresh for a GW, its success should be measured against the GW average score.

As its the first season with this chip we are still testing it out.

Playing it in a blabk GW

I don't think it needs to be tested out. You can work out when/if it would have been good in any season even when it wasn't available.

The rules say a cross deflected from intended target means no assist. And that’s what happened.

There is no intended player target discernible so then the intended destination is used. It was deemed an attempted near post cross and Aguero was attacking this area. Gomes popped it back into this area, therefore the assist is awarded.

Debatable for sure but when there's no clearer player target there is a judgement call on the intent on destination and it appears that KDB is trying to hit the near post and misdirects it. Aguero is one of the players attacking this area - and is the first player nearest the near post area - therefore it was deemed as an assist on those grounds.

There is consistency but, by the very nature of some of these decisions, it's difficult at times judging intent. Unless there is a clear player target - which isn't the goalscorer - generally the crosser will get the assist if a touch doesn't divert it significantly from what is seen as the intended destination area. This was seen as near post and therefore, the scorer, in that area, means the assist is awarded.

It was reviewed by ISM after the original award.

It is recorded as such by Opta but then any cross that finds a defender first is the same - a successful cross has to go direct to a team-mate for an effort on goal.

Like I say, this one is debatable and it will be filed as another case study, but the judgement was that the intention was near post, Aguero occupied this area and he was the scorer and, like I say, the call is made to award the assist rather than not give it if these conditions are met.

It would have been different if Gomes had palmed it out to a scorer on the penalty spot, away from the area deemed the intended destination.

Indeed. I really don't like it when my players are involved in fantasy assists likely to be reviewed as I can imagine the comments if awarded.

All I can do is try to communicate the rules and guidelines that I know are involved in the process of the award and review.

I've watched it back again there and, for me, he's crossing flat to the near post, not high to the far post, and with Aguero running into that area, Gomes' fumble pops it back into the intended destination.

Sure, but Aguero is first in line of all the players attacking the cross, so you can see why it's given.

No need to apologize. The rules are clear for those who want to understand them. The intended crossing area is pretty close to Aguero and he taps it in.

That's very easy to claim. I've tried to clear this one up above. When there is no clear intended player target, often the crosser or pass supplier gets the benefit of the doubt unless a touch takes it away from the clear intended destination.

Believe me, there is every attempt to be consistent but these decisions are sometimes very difficult.

I can sort of understand the one tonight, but what was going on yesterday? Trent Alex Arnold clearly deflected cross away from intended target, finds Mane, who swivels and scores, TAA assist given. Yet in Leicester game Gray crosses, clearly deflects away from intended target, Albrighton scores. No assist to gray. Where is the consistency there? Those 2 scenarios were literally identical and occurred within half an hour of one another!

Still think Arnautovic is the better FPL pick. Quite selfish, and as you say OOP forward.

Think Lanzini is the more talented real life footballer.

Hopefully Carroll doesn't start against Spurs. Or anyone else.

Yeah I thought this. They are so 1 dimensional with him in the team. Unfortunately, he scored two so he will definitely start.

I hope started to matchup with Hegazi on setpieces. Eitherway his brace means he starts next game 😥
