Scout Notes – Aguero Shines For Strong City

Sergio Aguero stars for a nearly full-strength Manchester City, while a much-changed Chelsea are held goalless by Norwich.

Three other Premier League teams will have to try again in replays as the FA Cup produces mixed results – and one sacking – on a busy Saturday of action.

For a manager who had gone very public with his claims that the Premier League’s packed Christmas schedule was ‘killing’ his players, Pep Guardiola showed them little FA Cup mercy.

The side he selected against Burnley was packed with regular starters, with only Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne and the fit-again Kyle Walker handed a rest.

Even then, the latter two were brought on in the second-half as City recovered from a 1-0 deficit, courtesy of an Ashley Barnes strike, with four unanswered goals after the break.

Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva were on the scoresheet, but the recovery owed much to Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine scored twice on what was his seventh straight start in all competitions – his longest unbroken run in the team all season.

An injury to Gabriel Jesus is likely to keep that run going for at least another 3-5 weeks, which will be music to the ears of his 22.2% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership.

Post-match, even Guardiola himself was talking up his forward’s need to play.

“I have to say it is an honour to have Sergio under my command. He is the kind of player who always wants to play, so I can understand that sometimes he is sad when he doesn’t play, but I want him to be happy.”

In his pre-match press conference, Guardiola had also backed Aguero to take on the workload demands of being his only fit striker.

“We need Gabriel, we need Sergio, we need both. We’ll have maybe two months without Gabriel. Two months is a lot of games, so we just have one.

He [Aguero] was banned two or three times [under me], because he’s so aggressive without the ball and after that he was always good, always fit. So hopefully we can handle it until the end, because of course we need the striker’s goals.

We have other options, not like a striker, but guys with mentality to be around the box who can solve that problem.”

FPL managers will be far happier if Aguero is rested for the first leg of City’s EFL Cup semi-final against Bristol City in midweek ahead of a league schedule (liv NEW WBA bur LEI) offering plenty of potential for their man to add to his 111 points for the season.

But trying to anticipate Guardiola’s rotation decisions remains close to impossible. He kept bit-part players Yaya Toure, Eliaquim Mangala and Brahim Diaz on the bench throughout yesterday’s tie while starting Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones and introducing goalscorer Silva – a starter just four times since Gameweek 10 – after 79 minutes.

Meanwhile, David Silva, back from his latest trip to Spain following the premature birth of his son, and even Raheem Sterling, who has started 11 of the last 12 matches in the league, played the full 90 minutes against the Clarets.

The 37.0%-owned Sterling, just like the rest of City’s stars, will likely get a further break in January, with the Champions League to be factored in again from the middle of next month.

That hasn’t stopped FPL managers making Sterling and Aguero the fourth and fifth most purchased players respectively ahead of Gameweek 23.

Tuesday’s EFL Cup teamsheet looks crucial with the two-legged semi-final surely the most likely hot-spot for rotation of Guardiola’s key attacking assets over this period.

Change costs Chelsea

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was considerably more willing to use the FA Cup to shuffle his resources.

He made nine changes for the tie at Norwich City, with only Gary Cahill and Tiemoue Bakayoko retaining their places from the midweek draw at Arsenal.

Unfortunately, another stalemate was the result, which means a replay at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, January 16, between Gameweeks 23 (Leicester City (h)) and 24 (Brighton (a).

Chelsea also have an EFL Cup semi-final first leg tie with Arsenal this Wednesday, so the fixtures are piling up for the Blues.

At least key Fantasy assets such as Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso didn’t even travel to Norwich. Neither did Eden Hazard, who is nursing a minor injury, though the 17.5%-owned Alvaro Morata was in the squad and came on after 74 minutes, to no avail.

Meanwhile, David Luiz return to fitness may cause Andreas Christensen owners some concern, though the Brazilian’s unconvincing performance at Carrow Road, amid continued speculation on his future, should offer reassurance. The replay would also make it very likely that Christensen will start both league matches, with Luiz set to be given a second outing against Norwich.

Extra fixtures for trio

Three other Premier League sides also face replays.

Leicester City drew 0-0 at Fleetwood Town, with injury denying Jamie Vardy a return to his footballing roots, although defender Ben Chilwell was fit to start after a two-match absence.

The sides will now play again on the Tuesday between the Foxes’ January 13 trip to Chelsea and a home match with Watford.

Swansea City were also held goalless, by Wolves, in a tie in which Renato Sanches picked up a hamstring injury and Leroy Fer was sent off.

The midfielder will now miss three matches – the Tuesday replay sandwiched between Newcastle away and a visit from Liverpool.

Bournemouth had to come back from two goals down to earn their second chance against Wigan.

Lys Mousset and Steve Cook, in the 93rd minute, got the goals, with the Wednesday, January 17 replay coming between a visit from Arsenal and a trip to West Ham for the Cherries.

Elsewhere…

Huddersfield’s 2-1 win at Bolton came at a price, as the 6.1%-owned striker Collin Quaner limped off with a hamstring problem.

Head coach David Wagner is optimistic that the setback for his compatriot was not a major concern…

“Quaner felt his hamstring but I think we have caught it soon enough for it not to be a problem”

The winger’s replacement, Rajiv van la Parra, opened the scoring before Danny Williams added a second within a minute.

The Terriers were much-changed for the tie, although Laurent Depoitre (7.3%) also started and defender Terence Kongolo, on loan from Monaco, was impressive on his debut.

Watford saw off Bristol City 3-0, with Troy Deeney scoring on his return from a four-match ban.

Etienne Capoue and Andre Carillo were also on the scoresheet – the latter now has either a goal or an assist from his last three starts in all competitions.

Midfielder Richarlison, at 15.7% the most popular Watford player in FPL, was rested, although he did come on after 69 minutes.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino made just two changes to the side that lost to Crystal Palace as the Saints beat Fulham 1-0.

James Ward-Prowse’s first-half goal was enough to see Southampton progress.

Alan Pardew finally got his first victory as West Brom manager with a 2-0 win at Exeter.

Salomon Rondon and Jay Rodriguez scored the goals, but Kieran Gibbs picked up a knock that makes him an early doubt for next weekend’s home match against Brighton.

Newcastle breezed past Luton 3-1, with two goals for Ayoze Perez and one from Jonjo Shelvey.

However, defender Jamaal Lascelles (5.8%) lasted just 31 minutes of the tie before going off with a groin injury, though reports state that he is confident to be in contention for Saturday’s visit from Swansea City.

Mark Hughes’ final match in charge at Stoke City was a shock 2-1 defeat by Coventry City.

He was sacked after the upset, with a Charlie Adam penalty not enough to save either the tie or his job.

Cannot believe Hazard has got away with his dive vs Arsenal.

Absolutely disgraceful double standards from the FA.

The way the rules are he can't be banned. He got kicked in the foot, so because there was "contact", he can go down and be awarded a pen. Yes it's sad because it was still a dive IMO, but that's the way it is.

It’s really sad that most people just accept that a dive like that is a penalty these days.

        Really bad for the game.

It's a foul anywhere on the pitch. Strip it down to basics, the attacking player was kicked by a defender with no contact on the ball. If Hazard falls over to force the issue, so be it. He was fouled.

I'm not a Chelsea fan nor do I own Hazard in FPL, but the Premier League (pundits, fans etc.) need to accept that you don't have to have your head kicked off in order to earn a penalty. Bellerin made a mistake by kicking Hazard instead of the ball..

      What is a penalty?

There was no contact to the ball from bellerin.
He had contact with Hazards boot.So definitely its a penalty

Eventually its upto Hazard to make the most of it. No way FA was looking into it!

I don’t like it much. It was a dive - even if it was a penalty. Refs should start dishing out cards for obvious dives in my opinion, but still give the penalties. Similarly they should start giving penalties for fouls even if the player isn’t knocked down by them. Unfortunately the players know that they have to simulate or the ref won’t give it - which is legitimatising their dive.

He can't be banned if there was a contact. Unfortunately FA can't measure in how much pain a player is and if he's overreacting. They can only say if there was a contact and Bellerin didn't even touch the ball.

This is the exact same situation as with the Liverpool penalty on Friday night there was contact but not enough to make the player go down in the manner that he did same applies to Hazard when he went down holding his ankle and squealing like a pig both where blatant forms of cheating.

They need to change the rules to be far more subjective so even if there was contact was there enough contact to make the player go down in the manner that he did. FA needs to play hard ball with the cheats in the game

maybe in these times of blatant gamesmanship, or cheating if you will, we need to look at what even constitutes a penalty. Should a kick in the area automatically result in a free attempt at goal?

No need to panic at all here. I would move one of the WHU on this week and then look to shift Eriksen/Son to Salah. Keep the wildcard either way. Don't need 15 so much now with less games on the horizon so carrying a Mbemba/DCL isn't a disaster.

I never really understand why clubs field under strength squads in these cup games which end up going to a replay the vast majority of times. They then leave themselves with another unnecessary game to prepare for when they could be preparing for the next PL game with a whole weeks rest

Yes make a few changes but not the whole team

    Kane vs Aguero

For those that can only afford one of Kane and Aguero, what's your plan going forward? Keep Kane? Direct swap for Aguero, if so then when?

Kane: EVE sot MUN liv ARS
Aguero: liv NEW WBA bur LEI

For me the switch to Aguero in on the cards after this GW. And then switch back to Kane in GW28 when he has (cry). Kun in that GW most likely has a blank thanks to the Carabao final.

Obviously Kane can score against anyone but are we really expecting him to haul big against United, Liverpool and Arsenal? I think Kane has only ever scored once against United. Liverpool’s home defence this season is awesome. He usually scores against Arsenal but it's usually restricted to one goal. Southampton fixture is the one I fear but equally I would fear not having Kun for Newcastle.

What's the community's take on this?

I've somehow ended up with both. Will obviously just wait and see how it pans out.

Might drop Kun for his blank Gw28 and depending on form, Man City in the UCL and Man City in FA Cup drop him altogether and bring back for doubles.

    Afternoon chaps,

My team is in absolute turmoil and I have no clue what to do.

My team;

    Pope Elliott

Masuaku Dunk Jones Gomez Kenny
    Son Salah Sterling Loftus-Cheek Arnoutavic
    Morata Firmino Kane

    0.4 ITB & 1 FT.

I know I need to downgrade a striker and upgrade mid / defence but don’t know where to start.

Happy to take a hit or two.

Any suggestions are seriously appreciated!!

    Thank you.

I know mate, somehow TV is 104.5 but most of it stuck in attack.

Yes, I can do that and would leave me 0.9 ITB.

Really need to downgrade Firmino as well to a bench fodder and upgrade rest of team.

Kanexit v.2 must surely stand a better chance of being a success?

In swapping out Kane for Aguero gw25-27, you get the best captain option for 3 gameweeks without ripping up your power midfield and defence.
Kanes hattricks in v.1 will have scared most others from doing it, and actually making it even more valuable imo
    Thougts?

I agree - Kane is a player you should just own (after August) for the season. He will have a some annoying blanks but also lots of braces and hat tricks which make him too valuable not to own in my view

No I think Moaneo will rotate him with Martial, Miki, Mata and sometimes Rashford, however he is the current hot player and Stoke are next !!!!.....personally I bought in Pogba for Arnie as I see Pogs long term and no rotation.

Alonso is basically a midfielder with clean sheets
Azpilicueta has assists and is on bps
Otamendi scores sometimes and is on bps
    Stones has some goal threat
Mustafi has some goal threat and a great run of fixtures
VVD has some goal threat, more of a gamble because not yet settled in (or is he?)
Jones has clean sheets and bps galore, maybe slightly injury prone

I kind of feel like 5 of those would really keep the points ticking, more than mids and forwards.
All of them are nailed on, none are currently under threat of an incoming transfer (unlike many mids and forwards).
Doubling up on City def would force a decision in between a city mid and Aguero.

    Any missing? Thoughts welcome.

        Could you define value?

I currently could change to an Alonso-VVD-Mustafi-Jones-Otamendi defense while having a Kane-Aguero attack and more or less your midfield (Swap Eriksen for Alli and RLC for 4.7)

Most of those defenders return fantastic points per £.

By having 5.5 - 7.2 defenders that keep the points rolling in, you can afford to pick some real premium players elsewhere that give less points per £, but can haul big.

My comment was pointing out that you should have highlighted the great points/£ of the defenders

Ok, thanks, right, I was probably implying this when speaking of points ticking. There could almost be a case made for a 5-3-2 IF Kane and Aguero were to start playing their best.

You cant just think that Alonso is a 7m midfielder. Typically with Alonso you need two/three cheap mids. Think like this: You can get either Alonso and Albrighton or Arnie and Stones/Jones. I know the 1st combo still probably wins but the difference isnt as dramatic

Disagree, you can trim a .1 or .2 off many places in your team to get Alonso and get Arnie (as your example) - the suggestion that to have him as a binary choice of N+1 is a fallacy put up here quite often and is a non sequitur

I agree. My team has a lot of balance in it. No issues. In fact I will be changing Morata to Aguero next week and I already have Alonso, Otamendi and Christensen as well as Salah and Sterling in midfield and Kane up front.

I missed out on Ota but am very keen on adding Stones and VVD to my Alonso and Jones, and it doesn’t really restrict my team with all the value mids around

              • 7 Years

I was thinking about this. Maybe not VVD as I would have probably have to bench him when he plays away which I don't want to do with a 5.5m+/- defender. My midfield is quite balanced though - currently Salah, Sterling, Son, Arnie, RLC but I will do Son to Lingard and then Morata to Aguero and then upgrade RLC or a defender (Mee and Yedlin) with the left over cash.

That is sort of my team, post DGW I am Eriksen, Son, Lingard, Sterling and RLC and will do Eriksen to Salah next GW. Son may go when he dries up a bit, which he surely will.

Thinking of 442 (but I like that cheap 4th:5th defender and 5th mid rotation option so not sure ) just not sure who my 4th defender will be - Davies looking possible now again, VVD may get some goals ...
