The Season After – No Salah, Mo’ Problems

Ben Crabtree is the reigning Fantasy Premier League (FPL) champion, but the defence of his title is not going well.

There are a number of reasons for that, although one particular quirk of his playing style is not helping one bit.

In the latest in a series of exclusive articles for Fantasy Football Scout, Ben details the selectorial issue at the heart of this season’s struggles.

From the very beginning of my Fantasy Football management career, I decided to let heart rule head and only pick players for my squad that I liked.

This decree allowed me to support my Fantasy team without any guilt or conflicting conscience issues. In short, this meant having a minimum of one Everton player and never picking a Liverpool one.

Throughout the years, I’ve been able to compete well in my mini-leagues – and at the top of what I consider my main league with a friend who also plays with the same morals/handicap.

After finishing 88k in my first season, six of the next seven concluded with a top 50k finish. The other was a 354k disappointment which coincided with Luis Suarez scoring 31 goals, contributing an abundance of assists and being an easy captain pick in 90% of Gameweeks for the majority of managers.

All in all, my style of playing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) only ever felt like a major restriction in one season out of eight.

It’s fair to say, that’s now twice in nine.

Mohamed Salah’s pre-season form was a concern, but it’s been a disaster for me since the campaign started.

The number of goals he’s scored has meant it feels like I start each week 10 to 15 points behind everyone and in every match it seems he could have scored one or two more.

In the majority of teams I look at, not many have captained Salah until very recently. I imagine the people in the top 100 started captaining him a while back.

Spells of Philippe Coutinho form, along with Alvaro Morata injuries and a suspension coinciding with Roberto Firmino hauls, have also contributed to my downfall.

But nothing has hit quite as hard as Salah’s relentlessness.

While the punishment might be self-inflicted, I still never see a time when I put myself in the position where I’ll be happy to see Salah, or any Liverpool player, score heavily.

FPL affects how I watch football, and while I’m content to ‘support’ Man United or Chelsea at times where I’ve co-owned their players, it won’t happen with Liverpool.

Down with the Decorations

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, I was concerned about rotation as I had Chancel Mbemba and Oumar Niasse, who hardly play, along with a few defenders who had difficult matches over the festive period.

As Charlie Daniels’ good run of fixtures came to an end, I had the money to upgrade him to Marcos Alonso.

I wasn’t set on it, but knowing he’s got the potential to single-handedly ensure a good week, I was closely monitoring the situation.

Victor Moses had just come back from injury, encouraging a thought that he could move to left wing-back in some matches as Chelsea fans weren’t happy with Alonso’s form and in the crucial week, the Spaniard Alonso was subbed off on 54 minutes.

So because of great Christmas fixtures, a cheap price and with a knack for securing bonus, I unfortunately and disastrously decided to pick Kiko Feminia.

The money was spent elsewhere, so it’s only now that I’m getting Alonso in – 53 points later than ideal.

This, along with the untimely Sead Kolasinac snubbing, was my Christmas sob story.

There were better days from transferring in the likes of Nick Pope, Jonjoe Kenny and Phil Jones, with earlier transfers of Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane proving particularly rewarding.

A couple of Ruben Loftus-Cheek assists and bringing Romelu Lukaku in for consecutive returns kept me ticking over, but a low-scoring Gameweek 21 was compounded with a 14-point haul, or 28-point captain smash for a lot of people, courtesy of a Salah brace.

Double Gameweek 22 got off to a good start, with Marko Arnautovic and Dele Alli putting in the groundwork for something special. But in the end, the Son Heung-min goal was a blow and I was left rueing not leaving the armband on Alli instead of Kane.

Over Christmas, my Overall Rank temporarily jumped up to 500k (yes, I’m that far down) at one point, but a few Salah-assisted red arrows have put me back at 1.1m.

The season goal looks like being updated again, finishing in the top 250k maybe.

Moving into 2018, and my FPL New Year’s resolution is to recruit the likes of Alonso, Jesse Lingard, Sergio Aguero, Cenk Tosun and possibly Kevin De Bruyne, Paul Pogba or Riyad Mahrez.

I’m tempted by a temporary switch from Kane to Aguero, but Morata’s Sunday league form suggests that’s the better, although costlier, move.

Unwavering blind faith makes me want to get on board the Tosun wagon from the off, while dealing with some midfield issues such as Richarlison’s and Leroy Sane’s form, plus the nearly 22 million invested in Spurs assets who are close to some tough fixtures.

I’m slightly tempted by a Wildcard this week, with my thinking that although the double Gameweeks near the end of the season are generally a better time to unleash this, maybe the points accrued over the next 11 weeks up to Gameweek 34 would better the points gained in the Wildcard-plus-Bench-Boost weeks.

For those doubles, I’d have plenty of time to plan, and there are generally a lot of teams with two fixtures so I’d still be competitive.

I’m unlikely to do this, but it was a thought as a way of quickly getting the players I now want.

Maybe the mulled wine is just not fully out of my system yet.

The Future

Making better transfers and the correct captain calls will always be the way to climb up the ranks, and if Liverpool players do well, then I’ll just have to take it on the chin.

In the past, it’s not been a problem to the point that first overall was proven to be possible in a season where Liverpool finished fourth.

Hopefully next season things will swing back in that direction.

No Salah means more problems and possibly a write-off season from day one.

Saying that, a friend who also plays the same ‘style’ game as me is currently 144 points ahead, with a 37k overall rank.

First place couldn’t be my benchmark this year, but another season in the top 50k looked like it was very much achievable until Salah arrived.

Still laughing at Granville passing Jonty that glass of water. Absolutely fantastic. The most wonderful thing I've ever seen on the Scoutcast.

Granville picks up a glass of water and just as he's doing it Jonty raises his arm in turn , so it looks like he's passing him the water through the Scoutcast. Serendipity at its finest.

    Who to ditch for Lingard?

    A) Richarlison
    B) Arnie
    C) Allie

    Team is:

    Elliot,
    Alonso, Jones, Ogbonna
    Salah, Sterling, Arnie, Richarlison, Alli
    Kane, Firmino

    (Adrian, Otamendi, Kenny, DCL)

I've only got 1 FT this week, and also think I can hold off on Aguero until next week considering he has Liverpool away this week. Also a bit tempted to see if the Sanchez moves happens as that could spell rotation risks again.

Tough one - I actually hope Arnie is ruled out tomorrow to make the decision easier!

All things considered, although I can see the argument for keeping Arnie if fit, I'm not a huge fan personally and I just don't trust West Ham performance wise particularly really. So I'd probably ditch him for Lingard and reassess other options next week

Yeah just for the double and thinking their fixtures aren't bad for a few weeks. Would like to ditch one of Ogbonna and Adrian but there isn't really anyone else as cheap as them playing.

I'd say that the no Liverpool theory is pretty sad, well it is and if Ben has any thoughts of ever doing well again he needs to rethink.

But he has done something that most of us can only dream about and I think we would mostly take that rather than a Wonka average without ever actually winning anything. Kudos

I agree - I'm a United fan and as much as it pains me when Liverpool or City do well, realistically you have to have their players (at least occasionally) to do well in FPL.

Also, the players are going to score anyway so you may as well benefit in FPL terms at least. The last minute winner for City hurts, but if Sterling scores it at least you've got some benefit.

Yeah but plainly he's more concerned with his rival who does a similar restriction with his team (not sure what restriction that is...maybe the same one)....

Sounds very much like his rivalry with his mate comes first with OR something of a sideshow......despite having won it....

Ya he does limit his armory by excluding a club but if it shows anything it is that no single player or team cover is absolutely essential to do well.

Well not really because last year's number 1 in the world has excluded the top player in the game this year and is now down in 1.1m. I think that shows Salah is pretty essential.

Yup. The problem I have found personally with ignoring one of the top players is that you then end up trying to be too clever and find differentials (Ben going for Kiko over Alonso for example) and it just compounds your decisions and makes it even worse.

You'll be in a much better position if you get all of the main consistent points scorers and then try to find some differentials around the edge. But purely differentials never works.

It's in the article. He finished about 350k that season....but just carries on doing what he's doing because that's how he plays.

Most of these posts seem to think he's concerned about his OR when plainly he's not that bothered and just wants to play his way against his mate who also plays his way...

I'm not knocking his motives at all, as you know I don't play the 'normal' way, loads of hits and televised capt etc but was merely pointing out that he will never repeat his great achievement, and he has done something that Wonka will never do

            Meh

Lets say he has Mahrez instead of Salah he would be only 40 points worse off and could have used the extra money to maybe make up those points elsewhere.

Maybe he has not been able to devote the time this season to be a top dog in fpl who knows?
I know from my own experience to do well in fpl you have to devote a lot of time and mental energy to the game you just cant do that every season if you want to tend to other things in your life.

But imagine how easy the team will be to pick if u ll stand by the same rule..choose a big team, leave its players out and suddenly the squad selection is made easier..u pick from the other big 3 and you put in a few bargain differentials that no one has..
Of course if one of the players u have to leave out is salah this season you are screed, but think if you choose to leave Chelsea players out this season...u ll be probably flying without the headache of having to select morataor hazard over sane,or sterling or someone else

      Considering wc

      Courtois, Elliot
      Mee, Alonso, otamendi, ogbonna, Clark
      Lingard, richarlsion, sterling, gross, salah
      Kane, firminio, Murray

      Current team is
      Adrian, Ryan
      Mee, Christensen, Schindler, otamendi, mbemba
      Eriksen, son, salah, sterling, Carroll
      Kane, firmino, Dlc

My thinking is as follow. Get more diversity. Mbemba, Carroll and dlc are basically bench fodder every match. By bringing in more players that can contribute I have much more freedom in lineup and formation.

I couldn't find the money for any united defence. However I could afford to double on Chelsea that have good fixtures.

Do I take too light on the value of a wc for dgw. Is it better to deal with Tottenham triple and weak bench gw by gw? I got 1ft.

Also 800k could be saved on Adrian, Ryan instead of courtois, Elliot. Is that a smarter buy? Just think Chelsea have good cs potential?

If I wc I have 0,0 itb. Any of my wc players that is a big no no?

      Any feedback highly appreciated.

I'd save it. You're not changing any of your big hitters there so I don't think it's worth it. Would rather just do a -4 of -8 and start your surgery if you think necessary.

I'm looking to get rid of Elliot if he's no longer starting. Courtois is waste of money. Get DDG if you spending over 5m on a keeper. Rich has been terrible 3ppg last 9. RLC has 2 pts less in that time and played 2 less games

      Whom would you captain?

      a) Aguero

      d) Sterling

I'm on Aguero at the minute. It's Aguero after all.

They could be even further ahead of you after this GW. Are you far off the lead? I'd try and look elsewhere for differentials, and make sure you nail the DGWs. I guess it depends how far behind you are.

It's tricky as I'm 100 points behind - mainly by not having Salah rather than Kane, tbh. As a result, I brought in Son and Alli for the DGW and captained Son.

I'm probably the form team through December but the ML leader has had a really good month too. I'll stick to my guns as I feel like I have some momentum with other teams bringing in my players to try an block me off, but they don't have Aguero (yet).

100 points is quite a margin I guess. Aguero is definitely the kind of player that has the potential to help you and he won't be a differential for long so yeah it probably is the right call while you have the opportunity

Last week has mixed things up a fair bit with Salah's ownership. By having Aguero over Kane, I have the funds to bring Salah in after the City game. I'm not sure the ML leader can do that so there's some hope!

Lingard feels a little desperate somehow! Like a GW38 captain punt.

I'd be more annoyed if I captained Lingard and Aguero outscored him than the other way around, and I think that's the acid test.

for me he is. I don't think LIngard can keep up these worldly goals and Pogba is bound to come good imo.
It also depends if you are chasing or leading the pack. Lingard is the more popular 'safe' option but Pogba might be on pens and could explode just as easily for double digits than Lingard.

I'd be tempted to roll it mate. I'm only looking at Eriksen to Lingard because I have Son too. Don't think you need to do it seeing as you only have one Spurs midfielder

Which should be my priority THIS week:

          a) Kenny vs Tot > Alonso vs lei
          b) Gray vs Che > Lingard vs Stk

The other will happen next GW but will need a hit to release funds if no injuries to mid/expensive players for a straight swap.....(to do this week would need an 8pt hit)

If you had to drop one, Richarlison or Arnoutovic?

Tough! Arnie has the form, but I prefer Richarlison. Think I'd drop Arnie. I expect Richarlison to find some form again soon

I am bringing Richarlison in, and I have the money to get Arnie instead. Hope it helps.

I usually look for in form players. He's the opposite. Carrillo more appealing and 5.5

Arnie. Rich doesn't have any lingering hamstring risk (I also have both).

I think City more likely to keep CS than Chelsea but I'll play Ota and Alonso because you don't bench premium defenders

Both have significant goal threat, and both teams defend well

Aye, but he's saying that City are more likely to keep a clean sheet than Chelsea, but that doesn't mean Chelsea aren't a good bet for a clean sheet, just not as good as City.

But aye, I'd never bench either anyway

              Of course.

Never understand when posts come up that someone benched Ota or Valencia etc...
              No sympathy here!

Remember the percentage that benched Jones against Liverpool and Spurs

I don’t care that Ota is playing Pool away.

Yeah, Pool will probably score but there’s more upside to somebody like Ota who is more than capable of grabbing a set piece goal vs this Pool team. Plus he’s a baps magnet

Tactical question related to selling Alli or Son. My ML rival also has Son, so...

            1) Do I keep Son to mitigate that differential? (he's already had to sell Cout, so I doubt he's going to take a hit)

            2) Keep Alli to bolster the differential? Rival has Eriksen.

I’d honestly just forget what your rivals are doing and focus on your team.

Do what you feel is the best move.

Focusing on OR instead of rivals always works out better in the long run, in my experience.

I had both Alli and Son for the DGW, and if I was to chose one to keep going forward, it would be Son. Spurs lack pace without Walker and Rose, and I think Son is becoming a big part of their attacking threat.

If they were the same price then it's a tougher decision but I'd rate the Spurs lads as Kane > Son > Eriksen > Alli. Son ahead of Eriksen due to the price difference.
