The 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) runs from 14 January through 5 February and looks set to deprive Fantasy managers of some key Premier League players from Gameweeks 21 to 24.

This article aims to provide a ready guide on the players who are going and those from the sides participating who will not be taking part.

My references have been African sports reports as well as UK media sources.

Additional Notes

Some players listed above are eligible for AFCON through parentage, rather than birth nation. Reported official squad lists were used where available.  In addition I have not included every player from the very bottom of the Fantasy Premier League points tables, nor every player who is potentially eligible for this year’s contest but not likely to take part.

Mbokani is DR Congo, not Ivory Coast.

    This will be useful, thanks!

But Yaya Touré has 102 caps for Ivory Coast and has retired from international football.

Cheers. Some more...imaginative...websites have claimed Yaya could still be called up; his entry here was meant as rumour control 🙂

Why is Idrissa Gueye (Senegal) listed under both "Taking part" and "Injured, Not Travelling"?

Aren't players supposed to be released on the morning of 2nd January? If so, any history of dispensation granted to allow them to play in GW20?

      Yes and yes, apparently:

Gameweek 20 (Jan 2-4) – Training camps and friendlies – players expected to be given special dispensation to play, and should remain available for their clubs.

Gameweek 21 (Jan 14-15) – Group stages – all players missing.

Does anyone know what happens if a player picks up a 5th yellow card before they go to the ACoN? Would the suspension be held until they return? Or, be used up on the next game, despite them not being able to play? Thanks.

Not yet 100% he'll go, though he's been named in the Cameroon side against his wishes. Pulis has said he won't fight the decision if Cameroon force the issue.

Are we assuming Schlupp will play on the wing and then move into fullback when Zaha returns?
