Scout Notes – FA Cup – Tuesday

Burnley continue their fine home record while Palace come from behind to avoid a shock against Bolton as the FA Cup third round replays go to form.

Burnley 2 Sunderland 0

Burnley eased past Sunderland and into the fourth round of the FA Cup in a match both sides could have been forgiven for wanting to lose.

Clarets’ boss Sean Dyche made seven changes to the team that beat Southampton on Saturday, with only midfield trio George Boyd (5.1), Steven Defour (5.7) and Jeff Hendrick (5.4), together with defender Michael Keane (4.9), retaining their places.

Sunderland, by contrast, fielded a side much closer to their first XI, with the benching of the 29.3%-owned Jermain Defoe (7.9) the main decision by David Moyes, who also brought in Billy Jones (4.4) and George Honeyman (4.5) as his only other changes from the weekend. Jack Rodwell was their latest injury casualty, ruled out with a knee problem sustained in the defeat to Stoke City.

The goals came from Sam Vokes (5.9), assisted by defender Tendayi Darikwa (4.2), and substitute Andre Gray (6.2), who was set up by Boyd.

Gray, a 5.3%-owned Fantasy asset, had not scored in two league matches, but now has five goals from his last six fixtures in all competitions.

Defoe was brought on in the second half, but was ill-served by a side that managed just two attempts on goal.

Post-match, Moyes rued his squad’s lack of depth.

“I’m really disappointed because we are threadbare at the moment. There were some positives – George (Honeyman) played well for us tonight and we played with three at the back to see if we could stop Burnley bullying us a little bit defensively.”

A change of formation to a three-man backline does have the potential to allow another relatively popular Sunderland asset, the 4.4%-owned Patrick van Aanholt (5.0), a more attacking role.

But Defoe, who has scored four times in Sunderland’s current four-match winless run in the league, remains the Black Cats only real Fantasy attraction.

Burnley will now play Bristol City at Turf Moor on Saturday, January 28, before the Gameweek 23 visit of Leicester on the following Tuesday.

Burnley XI: Pope, Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Flanagan, Kightly (Gray 77), Boyd (O’Neill 90), Barton, Defour, Hendrick, Vokes.
Subs not used: Robinson, Mee, Lowton, Ward, Jackson.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Denayer, Djilobodji, van Aanholt, Manquillo, Larsson, Love (Defoe 63), Honeyman, Januzaj, Borini (Asoro 80).
Subs not used: Mika, O’Shea, E Robson, Embleton, T Robson.

Crystal Palace 2 Bolton Wanderers 1

Christian Benteke (7.4) came off the bench to score twice in 30 minutes and give Sam Allardyce his first win as Palace manager.

The 5.7%-owned Belgian hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 15 – the end of a purple patch during which he netted five times in as many matches – and has suffered a major decline in ownership and price as a result.

A return to form could reverse both those trends as Palace prepare for a vital run of fixtures involving Everton, Sunderland and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Bournemouth, Stoke City and West Brom.

Allardyce made seven changes to the team well beaten by West Ham at the weekend, but having talked up new signing Jeffrey Schlupp (4.8) pre-match, the former Leicester man was not eligible to make the squad.

Midfielder Sullay Kaikai (4.5) was given his first ever Eagles start, while Joel Ward (4.8), Damien Delaney (4.8), Andros Townsend (5.9) and Joe Ledley (4.4) were the only survivors from Saturday’s side.

Palace were on course for a loss before Allardyce chanced his arm with a triple substitution. Benteke responded by heading home a Mathieu Flamini (4.3) cross and then steered home the winner from a Townsend assist.

The manager didn’t dwell on the victory for long post-match, spending much of the time talking of the need to strengthen his squad.

“We are spreading our wings far and wide and hopefully in the next 48 hours, at least one of those targets will be saying yes, pass a medical and sign for us. It’s hard to say how many we’re looking for; we’ve had about five, six or even eight bids in for players across Europe and in this country, and we’ve only had one accepted, which is Jeffrey Schlupp.”

The Eagles’ immediate schedule is certainly demanding. The FA Cup victory means they’ll entertain Man City in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28 – three days before they travel to Bournemouth for Gameweek 23.

City will have the benefit of an extra day off before their trip to West Ham on the Wednesday evening.

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Ward, Kelly, Delaney (Tomkins 62), Fryers, Lee, Flamini, Ledley (Puncheon 63), Townsend, Kaikai, Remy (Benteke 62).
Subs not used: Hennessey, Phillips, Cabaye, Husin.

Just thinking about the Costa situation. Ideally I dont want to get rid of him but I cannot see him starting at the weekend even if he is back in favour. If anyone, it will be Willian that will be dropped but they won 3-0 last game.

Injury or not, I don't think the situation has been handled well and so I wouldn't be surprised if Conte tries to teach him a lesson and go down the Payet route.

    Afternoon folks.

I have a selection headache this week and in need of advice/support. 🙂
I'm only after getting Alonso in my team and now forced to bench Brunt...who should score well.
What do you think? Right decision for Brunt 1st sub?

    Hennessey (Jak)
    Baines Monreal Alonso (Brunt Holgate)
    Sanchez Hazard Lallana Stanislas Phillips
    Ibrahimovic Kane (Barnes)

id bench monreal over brunt. least attacking potential.

I was looking at that but if Bellerin is out then Monreal should see more of the ball. (?) Gabriel is useless attacking.

      I have brunt also.

I see no problem benching brunt considering he may be played left back anyway in place of nyom as opposed to the right wing.

Can not see the nyom situation being resolved for a few weeks either

That's a tough one... you've a good squad, which in and of itself brings it's own headaches. I'd prob have him as my first sub, Brunt that is

Still can't decide. I have Alonso, Holebas, Evans*,Ake*,Amat* plus Giroud info to wait for. Ake is about to drop. If Evans is out I would make a hit to get playing defender anyway but we won't get that info today so:

    a) ake > chambers today for -4 to avoid loosing that 0.1
    b) wait for the presser

if you think about it; 0.1 taken at face value is not worth 4 points. And even less so when you consider that 0.1 given has a re-sale value of 0.005 at best. If it was early season I'd consider as you'd want to build up TV somewhat. But at this point in time, I'd defo wait.

      Wait for now but.....

Ake to Fabio 4.4m or holgate 4.1m are also options.

Fabio does pick up the odd yellow card but he is also given a more attacking role than chanbers albeit a very defensive setup.

He has out scored chambers in the last 2 and since his introduction a few weeks back had played regularly.

I am considering him instead of chambers.

Holgate is more of a gamble. He could double up as bench fodder.

Costa situation. I think that it is 50/50.

Play - he was "punished" already, didn't play last game and benching him again would be harsh. Hull at home is good game to "say sorry" to fans and coach

Bench - no one is bigger that club. he didn't travel last game now he may start on bench and come on at 60-70 min. Chelsea played very good last game w/o him and will win this one easly so benching him is not a risk in this game

Maybe its me but the situation sounds a bit more serious than a drop for 1 week and restore to the line up the next - his head isn't in the right place.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's dropped again this week tbh, don't think i'd gamble on him if i have him with the likes of Kane and Ibra out there.

Any views on cedric to baines for a hit?

Wonder if cedric will be rested ahead of their league cup game.....and my 4th defender is Pieters v utd.

    Thanks

      Wouldn't get Baines this week
Cedric has more CS potential to Leicester than Baines away to palace.

I keep tinkering with my team (procrastination at its finest) and came up with this:

    Heaton - Robinson
    Alonso - Rose - Baines - Evans - Amat
    Sanchez - Coutinho - Pedro - Phillips - Hojbjerg
    Ibra - Kane - Lukaku

    0.0ITB

Too little Spurs in midfield? Too light overall in midfield?

looks good If you want spurs midfield then you have to sacrifice kane

Kane and Phillips -> Defoe and Eriksen. Maybe no Eriksen then.

Or with the rest of the team staying the same which one do you prefer: Lukaku & Hojbjerg vs Crouch & Eriksen (+0.3ITB).

Fair enough, would leave me with 1.5 or something in the bank as well. Something to ponder.

Save FT? Currently about 15k and want to get back into top 10k.

Worried I have none of Kane/Lukaku/Ibra.. But Haz and Aguero could come good, right?

    Grant (Jaku)
Mustafi - Rose - Baines (Chambers, Love)
    Sanchez - Hazard (c) - Coutinho - Alli - Phillips
    Aguero - Defoe (Diomande)

go for aguero>ibra next week if he doesnt score. ibra has been quite consistent lately. If you go for aguero>costa then you can also upgrade defoe>lukaku and this will make your team one of the strongest i think

Just watched Scoutcast. Got me a bit nervous for Defoe and his upcoming fixtures. He had done well for me up until now.

    For a - 4
    Pieters to Love
    Defoe to Lukaku

    Yes or no?

    Will give a team of...

    Heaton
    Alonso / McAuley / Baines
    Sanchez (c) / Hazard (vc) / Eriksen / Lallana / Philips
    Ibrahimovic / Lukaku

    Jakupovic / Friend / Love / Diamonde

I wouldn't for a hit, he could do ok at wba, considering rid of him next week with 2ft myself though.

Prob the sensible move. 2ft could be nice for injuries etc....
Doing well in my ML so no real need to take too many risks.

    3. Get Kane and Alli to Eriksen

Depends on how you're getting them in. Alli to Eriksen is too sideways for my liking. Giroud to Kane looks the best move if you can do it for free.

Who would you captain between these two?

    A) Sanchez* (assuming Giroud is fit and Alexis on the wing)
    B) Pedro

If Giroud is out and Alexis up top I'll go with him.

    Pedro's last 5 home games - 13, 16, 7, 3, 13.

Just not convinced Pedro is nailed at the moment, seems to be rotated with Willian. They both play in games that Costa is missing though, so maybe it depends on what happens with him this weekend.

I don't see how Pedro isn't nailed. Has started 12 of the last 14. One of the games he missed was through suspension and I'm pretty sure he was injured for the other one.

You're right actually, didn't think it was that often. I think i was picking up on the rotation which is evident from his minutes.

    Assuming Giroud plays, bench one:

    A) Eriksen
    B) Alli
    C) Sanchez
    D) Lallana
    E) Phillips
    F) Ibra
    G) Defoe
    H) Giroud

Currently got Defoe sitting on my bench and Sanchez (c)
