Fantasy Premier League Focus – Gameweek 3

Once again, we take time out to analyse the consequences of another Gameweek in Fantasy Premier League. Looking at the performances of the top five in the Scout League, we also cast an eye the current transfer trends, with bandwagons picking up pace over the international break:

Scout League Standings

Asriel Chen not only remains at the top of the Scout League, he climbs to number one overall in the world – despite transferring out Santi Cazorla as part of a four point hit. The decision to part with the Gunners’ playmaker helped fund a move for Robin Van Persie and with captain Carlos Tevez, Michu, Yaya Toure and Thomas Vermaelen all producing the goods, Asriel boosted his total to an incredible 303 points to proudly sit atop the standings ahead of the two-week international break.

Renior Buffon moves into second place in the Scout League and sixth overall after scoring 81 points in the Gameweek gone by. Captain Van Persie and Tevez were the main protagonists, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Moussa Dembele also chipped in from midfield along with Toure – Renoir will be happy with his wildcard after a strong contribution from the new acquisitions.

Alex Henshaw edges ominously into third place after returning 105 points in Gameweek 3 – the only member of our top five to register triple figures. Six of his front seven – Van Persie, Tevez, Ben Arfa, Michu, Toure and Cazorla – all grabbed goals, while at the back, Ciaran Clark and Guy Demel registered 17 points between them, though he’s yet to acquire Eden Hazard ahead of Chelsea’s trip to QPR next time out.

Moving onto fourth position, we find Kelly Gosson. Once again, the Van Persie-Tevez combination worked wonders, while Toure and Nathan Dyer produced the goods from midfield. Kelly racked up 77 points over Gameweek 3 and sits in 77th overall, with a wildcard now played. Darren O’Connor makes up the top five after returning 64 points last week. Going against general consensus, he opted for Lukas Podolski alongside Tevez up top, while Thomas Vermaelen and Michu also helped boost his tally to 275 points overall – enough to earn 94th place in the FPL standings.

Finally, the Scout Contributors league has a new leader. Big Dunc’s decision to take a four point hit paid off handsomely, with the usual suspects such as Tevez, Van Persie, Toure and Michu, joined by Cazorla and Jermain Defoe, helping Dunc rack up 93 points – he now sits on 240 points overall, and in 9,044 place in the rankings.

The Market Trends

With wildcards continuing to be wielded at a frantic pace, player prices are more volatile than ever. Eden Hazard is the most popular player this week – over 105,000 Fantasy managers have picked up the Chelsea midfielder after a blank Gameweek 3. Hazard has already leapt 0.6 in price and looks set to rise again, with a week and a half still left before the Premier League kicks back into action.

Carlos Tevez is hot on Hazard’s heels, with over 91,000 grabbing the City striker. Tevez has scored in three of his side’s matches so far and has accrued 33 points, more than any forward – that price of 9.8 continues to rapidly escalate. Top scoring player in FPL, Michu shows little sign in slowing down after yet another goal last weekend – the Spaniard has acquired over 83,000 transfers in and has found a place in over 31% of Fantasy teams thanks to his endeavours thus far.

Certainly, it’s no surprise to see Robin Van Persie amongst the most popular players around. With a hat-trick against Southampton, the Dutchman’s steady climb in ownership shows no sign of abating – he’s been snapped up by over 80,000 new owners and is a massive armband favourite for the Gameweek 4 home clash with Wigan.

Elsewhere, Yaya Toure (50,000) and Fernando Torres (46,000) are tempting plenty, while the cut-price route into the Arsenal defence offered by Carl Jenkinson has seen over 70,000 Fantasy managers scramble aboard the bandwagon, despite the imminent return of Bacary Sagna at right-back. Gareth McAuley and Winston Reid have also received significant investment at the back after both returned goals and clean sheets last weekend.

For transfers out, Gareth Bale has taken the biggest hit this week, with over 54,000 Fantasy managers losing faith in the Spurs midfielder. The Welshman’s failure to produce in the first three Gameweeks, despite a kind schedule, has already seen his price drop to 9.4; with (rdg, QPR, AVL) amongst his next four, though, the potential is clearly still there for Bale to produce.

David Silva and Samir Nasri have been sold on by a combined 57,000+ with a sideways move to Yaya Toure offering a cheaper and more consistent alternative in City’s midfield. Many have also lost patience with Shinji Kagawa, despite a home clash with Wigan up next – 30,000 have moved the former Dortmund man on as midfields are drastically re-assembled.

At the back, City’s failure to produce clean sheets has seen many dispose of Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany’s services, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to drop David De Gea was enough to convince over 20,000 to sell off the United stopper.

Newcastle pair Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse have been slow out the blocks this season and, after a blank apiece against Villa, the Magpies pair have been dismissed by over 64,000 teams. While a Gameweek 4 trip to Everton looks tricky, the following two fixtures – (NOR, rdg) – still look prosperous for Alan Pardew’s side.

The transfers out continue to rack up for Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. Both could well be huge differentials if they return to action over the next few weeks; at present, they have 6.9% and 6% ownership respectively, compared to Van Persie’s 29.2% and Tevez’s 47.3%.

Baines. They are on opposite scales to me. I see Baines as near essential, and i don't think Bale has the consistency to justify 9.5m at the moment.

Top defenders like Vidic, Terry and Kompany are 7m. Baines is in a team with one of the defences in the league. He also has the attacking potential of a viable midfield option! You mix pens and set-pieces in and you've got fantasy gold dust!

I know his potential but i just can't see how ANY defender could be essential let alone one playing for Everton. Maybe if he was a million or so cheaper he'd be getting closer to 'essential' status

I agree that Bale will likely do something in the next couple of gameweeks. However, i believe its quite likely that he will continue to frustrate even if he does.

Its looking quite likely that AVB will continue in the same vein at Spurs as he did at Chelsea, for that reason im avoiding Spurs, plus their fixtures take a distinct downturn in a couple of weeks time

Wenger rates him as the best right-back in the league. He's probably not too far wrong. Having said that, I think Jenkinson will hold until Arsenal concede tbh.

    Valencia – Michu – Yaya – Mclean – Gutherie

DDG isn't a big rotation risk. It's just a lesson by Ferguson. He should easily play 32 games this season so as long as you have good back up who rotates well he should still be worth the investment, assuming Uniteds defence picks up a fair amount of cleanies which it eventually will.

Why do people say don't have Jusi and Demel? What's wrong with doubling up on WHU if they're the best two cheapies for that Gameweek. I know there is no variance, but over the course of the season you always want to pick the best.

    ALSO.

Why aren't the experts like Mark and such using their wildcards, this is the one time where you'll be able to pocket and cash in a million and that'll be the added bonus to really push on and succeed this year.

I think you can double on West Ham but doubling on any defence is not the norm and I do think there are options. It gets far more complicated when you try to build an effective rotation with your keepers though.

On the second point, I'm not putting myself forward as an expert and I did so nearly play the WC but, having assessed further I chose to spend 4 points to make the one change that I knew would strengthen and provide profit. I don't think I'm missing out too much by not playing the WC in this period. I've never played the markets heavily in the past and I've done okay. In fact, I've found that when I let price rises govern my decisions, I've often been driven to errors.

I don't partake in that, but surely if it helps them build an extra £2m by xmas wildcard then it's a worth tactic, not sure it's in my morals to win like that though.

That's the problem with chasing the money. Always causes such a quandry. I want Cazorla but 2 of the next 3 fixtures aren't appealing, but choosing not to get him might lead to having to pay an extra £0.2m and bit by bit that extra expenditure can be the difference between winning and losing.

YaYa NTI is at a higher rate so suggests he is more likely to rise again BUT those numbers may change once YaYa has risen initially, depends on how price savvy the average player is. If people want a player and just buy them no matter the price YaYa is the one who will rise again.

Yes, everything's a two-way street. If we give respect, we earn respect. If we're nice to people, invariably they will be nice back. It's all common sense, really. Trouble is, common sense isn't always that common.

It's odd. Pulis signed Tuncay and Gudjohnsen and then never allowed them to have an impact - they both demanded a change of style which was never likely.

Fair play to Pulis for maintaining Stoke's status and building on it but his latest moves, Adam and Owen, also suggest that he'll need to change style to get the best from them. Fair enough Adam can play "Kicker" and be a set-piece specialists but he's more effective as "Quarter Back" getting on the ball and spraying passes. Will he get that chance? He needs the ball fed through midfield more often I'd say.

As for Owen - he can pay off Crouch of course but I imagine it's a thankless task playing off knockdowns for an hour or so. He'd want Adam to play balls behind defenders I'd imagine.

Will be really interesting to see how Pulis changes things.

Surely N`znonzi and Adam are far better together than Whelan/Cameron or whoever they choose to play. And with Adam`s delivery to either flank + his set piece abilty it could be gold, although he hasnt put a decent corner in for half a season now. And tbh i really dont see Pulis trying to change it up much, would surprise quite a lot if they try to actually pass it now all of a sudden.

The thing that makes me worry about Adam is that at Blackpool, he used to make 80 passes a game. Nobody has got near that for Stoke for several seasons - he just won't get as much of the ball as he's used to and will need to do more work off it. Set-pieces, no fear, he'll be deadly for them.

He'd be a POINTLESS purchase. Bound to be used in role of super sub so 15-20 minute cameos. If he got game time he'd be a must buy and then you'd use the extra funds to promote to a world class midfielder.

There seems to be two shades for 'difficult' fixtures. Light blue and white. Is it supposed to be like this?

Yep, "difficult" spans a range. I'll double check though, we had a bug in pre season with that.

Cheers its a great tool but I'm not sure a 'difficult' fixture should be considered any shade of blue which indicates easy. White would be suitable.

No doubt Bale will deliver...we just don't know when it will kick in. When I considered the WC this weekend i was looking at Baines and a quartet of 4.0 defs so I don't see anything wrong with doing something similar with your second lineup. Clean sheets seem very unreliable across the board right now so you almost need at least the promise of attacking returns from any defender above 4.0 to justify it.

Cazorla nearly drove me to it but I have a route to get him once his fixtures clear a little more (in 3 GW's time). Had I not had that route, I may have played it. I was very close and there was a lot of frantic planning before I decided to shut the lid on it.

Wanted Lambert in up front. Was looking to get Guthrie to allow me to afford Cazorla. Toying with Baines with a total budget defence until some defences start showing up.

Oh aye, cleansheets will kick in soon though, it's always a pain wasting transfers on defenders aswell. You prefer B then? Other option i am considering is downgrading Michu to Dyer.
