Vidic Blow for United

Manchester United have this afternoon confirmed Nemanja Vidic is set to be sidelined for around eight weeks. The Serbian missed Sunday’s trip to Liverpool and while reports had initially suggested he would return for this weekend’s home showdown with Tottenham, they have proven to be way off the mark, as the club announced:

“Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks. Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem. The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks.”

It’s a bitter blow for Ferguson as his side square up to a run of fixtures that pit them against four of last season’s top six in the next five Gameweeks. Faith in the United backline has been dented by a single clean sheet accrued in the opening first five matches and today’s news will only lessen confidence in their ability to nullify opponents.

It’s perhaps a worry for Rafael’s newly-acquired owners – the right-back has been transferred in by over 31,000 FPL managers in the Gameweek so far, second only to Leighton Baines for defenders. If the right-back is to prosper, he’ll likely need to continue the attacking output that has so far harvested two goals in four starts – a tough ask, with games against Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon.

The Vidic news will – once again – promote Jonny Evans in our thinking. The Irishman benefitted from his skipper’s absence last term and looks set to establish himself as a regular in the first XI until the Serbian is ready to return. Bearing in mind that Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are still injured, there’s virtually no competition for Evans or Rio Ferdinand to worry about. Intriguingly, the two centre-halves and Rafael all come in under 6.0 in FPL – with starts looking assured and rotation threats in goal and at left-back, they seem nailed-on until Ferguson’s injury worries begin to ease.

With a threadbare backline that has struggled so markedly to produce clean sheets, it may well be that Ferguson has no option but to go on the attack in order to win games right now. If the same defensive pattern continues, returns at the back could well be minimal – such a scenario would place even greater reliance on Robin Van Persie and co to produce the goods up top, as United look to ride out what is a potentially difficult period.

So it looks as if Tevez will partner Balotelli in the League Cup. This surely suggests that Dzeko will partner Aguero at Fulham.

I was going to wait until next week but is Aguero in for Tevez worth a hit?

There was no way Aguero was going to start this match having just come back from injury. Regardless of who starts for City in the league cup the big worry should be who will be kept back for the champions league next week.

I think you're reading too much into that line-up. Balotelli & Tevez are rested so of course they play the cup game. That doesn't mean Tevez won't be back for Fulham. He can play two games in a week no problem.

This. Plus, Dzeko won't be starting a tricky away game where City need to take the small number of chances they get.

Very well done. I still feel strongly that assists are 5. You need to factor in more passes, dribbles, etc.

WIP. Pienaar went from 10 to 17. Conclusive proof? Gink had a point of an assist in a winning/drawing/losing effort.

But does that 7 include a successful pass?

I.e. Pienaar gained 5 PPI for an assist, 2 PPI for a completed pass?

Can any Everton fans confirm or debunk my theory on Fellaini v Pienaar please? I've only seen the Man Utd and Newcastle games.

I think against the big teams and in away games Fellaini will be more effective as Everton are more likely to go with the direct balls upto him.

In home games and against smaller sides they are more likely to go through the midfield more so Pienaar will be more effective. The Baines/Pienaar combination looks deadly. Against Southampton I fancy Pienaar to score higher.

I went with Pienaar for GW4 and since then they've both gotten 13 points so I don't regret the choice it's just some random nonsense I've been thinking about.

I could have bought either and went for Pienaar for the long term. Fellaini won't always play that high up, imho, whereas Pienaar plays where he plays.

Yeah, I can't see anything to suggest that Fellaini hasn't made that position his own. He's played it against strong teams, weaker teams, home, away, and perhaps most tellingly in the absence of Gibson.

He's the new, taller, hairier Tim Cahill.

Not an Everton fan but it's not that simple that Fellaini is the better option against big teams and Pienaar v small teams. Both can cause damage against all sorts of teams.
Fellaini is very good in the air so teams that are weak from set pieces are particularly vulnerable, but he can do the damage against any team really.
Pienaar is more skillful and is more likely to get an assist but isn't in the same scoring positions as Fellaini.

Yeah I know, I guess the only two games I've seen were extreme examples. Against Man Utd the vast majority of their attacks came from long balls upto Fellaini. And against Newcastle nearly everything came from the left side.

Against the likes of Stoke and West Ham I wouldn't expect Fellaini to get much joy in the air where as I don't think any of the top sides have defenders that can cope with him. Again, just extreme examples.

In the 5 games thus far Fellaini has had about twice as many shots taken as Pienaar. Pienaar has slightly better accuracy % but Fellaini takes more opportunities.

Given that, I have Pienaar and Baines but not Fellaini

Yeah that was why i asked this question in the first place. Michu is undoubtedly superior to Sterling in many ways (game time, convert ratio, etc). Both Swans and Liv has gone through crappy form over these few GW. However, the chance Liv will bounce back against nor is higher than swans against stoke if we look at their previous games. Take into account Nor and Stoke record at home, Sterling may be worth to play over Michu in this GW.

After wayin up a hit all week i've decided i dont need to take one.. Gonna do Kagawa to Fellaini on friday night leavin
    Mignolet
    Rafael Demel Gorkks
    Bale Cazorla Fellaini(c) Noble
    Rvp Tevez Ba
    Federici Dyer Hangeland Clyne

Leaves 2 mill in the bank and one more week to assess Dyer b4 his run if home games. Sound?

But you have the cover in place with Fellaini. Tough shout, think they'll produce similar numbers this weekend. Just would advise that Dyer has a good chance of cementing a starting place and that should be taken into account, not just last week as a lot of people are doing

Poor decision. ML tried to tailor the team for the Everton fixture and failed. Opinion of the jack fans i spoke to was he didn't want hern playing left as he is more comfortable on the right. Problem was it showed up the lack of quality in routledge too. Dyer made Everton have to worry about their left when he came on and it was the only time they weren't overrunning Swansea down that side and had to keep cover in place also, thus shoring up Swansea left side too. I think that makes sense but typing on phone

Is this team in need of a WC yet?

I'm not happy owning Davies, Gallas or Kagawa, but the replacements i have in mind: Ivanovic, Gibbs, & Santi will require finding an extra 2.3 million (e.g. shipping RVP for Podolski).

Tempted to ditch Hazard for Felliani this week.

Although this means i am heavily invested in Everton players (already have Baines and Pienaar) they do have great fixtures and form.

It also allows me to see how the holy trinity of HOM (Hazard, Oscar, Mata) settle down whilst they have some tough fixtures.

If Oscar or Mata look strong they are both cheaper and differentials and i could bring thme in from Gwk 10.

Is this the step of a madman?

Keep. Try and get a backline of: Rafael – Baines – Gibbs.

That's the plan but I don't like Man Utd's fixtures...I don't see a lot of CSs...then again that's not exactly why I'd be buying Rafael...arrgh this is tough

I think Rafael is pretty safe right now.

Olsson imo MU. With Vidic out and the run of fixtures I think the chances of CSs halved.

So you only have his attacking points and those against some good defensive teams.

Will Everton be playing a strong side tonight? I hope not but I suspect they will. Tiredness may play a factor in captain choice.

Baines would come in for Hangeland for a hit leadin me to bench Gorkks/Demel/Rafael. Thinkin i should bench Gorkks.. if any
