Frisking the Fixtures – The Strong – Gameweek 27

Impending blank Gameweeks for many teams produces difficult ground for our regular look at the upcoming schedules. We delve deep in our assessment of the next four to six Gameweeks, beginning with those who have promising fixtures to follow. Continued investment in a pair of solid Fantasy performers, Southampton and Chelsea, looks a valid tactic, whilst a handful of out-of-form sides are handed the chance to reverse their recent struggles:

Southampton

SAINTS27

A puzzlingly weak team selection from Mauricio Pochettino saw the Saints crash out of the FA Cup to Sunderland but Fantasy players are the real winners here as this means Southampton keep their fixture in Gameweek 29. Their next six fixtures include trips to West Ham and Crystal Palace plus home games against Norwich and Newcastle, with only the visit of Liverpool and a game at White Hart Lane to trouble what has been the best value source of Fantasy profit this season.

The ever-popular Artur Boruc is as good a pick as ever between the sticks. In defence, Calum Chambers appears to have stolen the spot from Nathaniel Clyne, though Jose Fonte is the elite moneybags option. It’s hard to look past Adam Lallana in midfield as he continues to impress in his bid for World Cup game time but up front there’s a real tussle for our affections between Jay Rodriguez and last year’s Fantasy workhorse, Rickie Lambert. Both come highly recommended.

Newcastle

NEWCASTLE27

Alan Pardew’s side have looked bereft of ideas since the departure of Yohan Cabaye and last Gameweek suffered a humiliating trouncing at the hands of Tottenham. They do, however, have a decent stretch of fixtures coming up to potentially reinstate some of their swagger. A probable blank week in Gameweek 29 is an annoyance (teams without one are thin on the ground) but the fixtures either side of that could be promising for Fantasy managers in dire need of a differential (AVL, hul, ful, CPL).

Newcastle’s defensive form has swung wildly from one end of the gauge to the other this season, with flagrant disregard for their opponents. A swing back to the positive would bring Tim Krul and the generously priced Mike Williamson onto our radars. In midfield, Hatem Ben Arfa was benched last time around after a run of three starts and looks to be in the doghouse once again, so we look to the strikers for options. Loic Remy has now served his suspension and will be absolutely integral to the remainder of Newcastle’s campaign – at one point in the season, he fired eight goals in as many games to demonstrate his potential.

Fulham

FULHAM27

We’ve yet to see anything of new managerial appointment Felix Magath but Rene Meulensteen can afford to feel a little aggrieved at his luck; Magath enjoys a much kinder fixture list than his predecessor to prove his merits. The next four fixtures for Fulham include West Brom, Cardiff and Newcastle, fixtures that could help the new manager steer the Cottagers to safety.

With a meagre three clean sheets all season, it would be a brave Fantasy manager who invested in Maarten Stekelenburg or Sascha Riether but Magath has worked with Lewis Holtby before and could coax goals and assists from him. Steve Sidwell scored his sixth goal of the season against Man United a couple of weeks ago to continue his surprise ascent up the Fantasy rankings but it may be Kostas Mitroglou who is of most interest. The Greek striker was on fine form before signing for Fulham and, if the new manager is able help him bring that form to the Premier League, we could have a genuine differential on our hands.

ALSO CONSIDER

Norwich
Another team whose Fantasy appeal is boosted by a lesser-spotted Gameweek 29 fixture, Norwich’s appeal is mostly centred around defence; they haven’t conceded a goal at home since Gameweek 19, despite hosting Man City and Newcastle. Their next six fixtures include the visits of Stoke and Sunderland as well as visits to Aston Villa and Swansea. To capitalise on their defensive form, John Ruddy is a little expensive but is second in the Fantasy standings for saves and third for keepers overall. In defence, Martin Olsson is the pick of choice, having both security of starts and price on his side. For those hoping to venture beyond the comforts of clean sheets for Canary-shaped points, Robert Snodgrass has grabbed a goal and assist in his last five games and could be on the verge of finally replicating the form that saw him rack up 152 points in his debut season last time around.

Cardiff
Ole Gunnar Solksjær’s stewardship at the Bluebirds has not been hugely successful so far, despite an agreeable schedule. There is still hope in the form of some handy home fixtures, though; Hull and Fulham pay visit in the next six, with a trip to West Brom also over that period. Such fixtures could be lucrative for David Marshall and Ben Turner in defence, whilst in midfield, Craig Noone has impressed and now looks assured of his starts. Wunderkind Mats Möller Dæhli was the subject of his manager’s praise after a stand-out display in the weekend cup los to Wigan – at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, he could be a worthwhile budget enabler if he can nail down a start.

Chelsea
Having failed to replicate last week’s equine feat in the FA Cup, Chelsea are now the only top four team without a blank Gameweek to contend with. Their fixtures are a little mixed, with daunting home games interspersed with kinder away trips but, with their gritty form and title aspirations, the only question over investment in the Blues looks like being one of quantity: to double or triple is the quandary facing Fantasy managers. John Terry is likely to return from a muscle injury this weekend and is still the defender of choice, though Branislav Ivanovic has been marauding high up the pitch lately and been rewarded with two goals and an assist in the last three. The performances of Eden Hazard have made him impossible to ignore and searching for lucrative differentials in the Chelsea strike force has become something of a fool’s errand, especially with Fernando Torres back to steal game time from Samuel Eto’o.

This took a lot longer than I thought but here's my view on GW29 and potential players from the teams with a confirmed fixture.

    __________________________________________________________________________________
    GW29 Confirmed Fixtures:
    WBA v MUN
    NOR v STO
    CHE v TOT
    CRY v SOT
    CAR v FUL
    _________________________________________________________________________________

    Norwich
Fixtures (GW27-30): TOT, avl, STO, sot

With a tasty GW29 fixture at home to a Stoke side that have been leaky on the road, a Norwich attacker is tempting. Robert Snodgrass is on all set pieces (except penalties), and has been a decent FPL option in the past (6 goals, 9 assists last season). In my opinion, a defender is a must, due to Stoke's recent goal-shy away performances. You can get Martin Olsson for only 4.2, who offers a decent attacking threat from LB, as well as having a very affordable price.

    Best options:
    Defender - Olsson (4.2)
    Midfielder - Snodgrass (5.9)
    Forward - Hooper* (5.8)

    Stoke
Fixtures (GW27-30): mci, ARS, nor, WHU

In my opinion, Stoke don't have much to offer fantasy-wise and transfers shouldn't be used on any of their players. However, Charlie Adam is the standout option from their team, a 5.8 priced midfielder on all set pieces with a decent threat from open play as well. On the road they are very poor though, so I don't expect much from their next two fixtures as well as their trip to Norwich in GW29.

    Best options:
    Defender - Shawcross* (5.4)
    Midfielder - Adam (5.8)
    Forward - Crouch* (5.5)

    Crystal Palace
Fixtures (GW27-30): MUN, swa, SOT, sun

A home clash against Southampton could turn out profitable for Palace, who have been rejuvenated under Tony Pulis. Although Southampton have been in excellent form defensively and offensively lately, Palace's defence solidity could be a challenge too far for them. I think owning a Palace defender is a very good option, with Joel Ward my pick of the bunch. Jason Puncheon and Thomas Ince have both been in good form recently and are good picks as 4th or 5th mids.

    Best options:
    Defender - Ward (4.2)
    Midfielder - Ince/Puncheon (5.5/5.0)
    Forward - Chamakh*(4.8)

    Southampton:
Fixtures (GW27-30): whu, LIV, cpl, NOR

The Saints' recent form has been very impressive, they are unbeaten in their last 6 premier league matches. Adam Lallana continues to standout in midfield, and is already in a lot of teams around here. Jay Rodriguez and Ricky Lambert both offer great potential for points, with the latter perhaps shading it due to being on free kicks and penalties. Callum Chambers seems to be the first choice RB now, and at 3.9 is a fantastic pick. Jose Fonte and Luke Shaw remain very good options if you're willing to spend a bit more on your defence.

    Best options:
    Defender - Chambers (3.9)
    Midfielder - Lallana (8.0)
    Forward - Rodriguez/Lambert (6.7/7.2)

    Cardiff:
Fixtures (GW27-30): HUL, tot, FUL, eve

A home tie against Fulham in GW 29 looks great on paper, but personally I don't think it's worth spending transfers on getting Cardiff players in. David Marshall gets a lot of save points but clean sheets have been scarce for the Welsh team recently. If you already own Ben Turner or Craig Noone, I'd definitely keep and play them, but 2 points from either wouldn't surprise me.

    Best options:
    Defender - Caulker* (5.2)
    Midfielder - Noone (4.3)
    Forward - Campbell* (5.2)

    WBA
    Fixtures (GW27-30): FUL, - , MUN, swa

A clean sheet against United seems unlikely and WBA seem to have a knack of conceding atleast 1 goal at home. However, at the Hawthorns this season, WBA have managed to achieve 1-1 draws against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, suggesting a heavy United win would be a big shock. A blank in GW 28 also reduces the appeal of their assets - I'd be very surprised to see any people with WBA players in their team for GW29.

    Best options:
    Defender - McAuley* (5.2)
    Midfielder - Brunt* (5.0)
    Forward - Anichebe* (5.1)

    Manchester United
    Fixtures (GW27-30): cry, - , wba, LIV

With 2 away games and a blank in the next 3 GWs, United players aren't very appealing, unless you already own them. In my opinion, their defenders can't be trusted and aren't worth the money and hassle of owning. Juan Mata looks like the only viable midfield option and Wayne Rooney's frequent withdrawn positions and lack of returns dents his appeal. RVP, still VERY expensive despite his early season injuries, is probably the best captain option for GW 29, but many fantasy managers will find it hard to squeeze him in without weakening other areas of their team.

    Best options:
    Defender - Evra* (6.4)
    Midfielder - Mata (9.8)
    Forward - RVP (13.6)

    Chelsea
Fixtures (GW27-30): EVE, ful, TOT, avl

A new defensive solidity under Jose Mourinho has seen many fantasy managers snap up one (or two) of their defenders. A clean sheet in GW29 doesn't seem too likely against an in-form Spurs team, but, with Mou's tactics against the bigger teams, I may be proved wrong. Eden Hazard remains a great midfield option, and with Fernando Torres now back from injury, rotation looms for him and Eto'o. From a defensive perspective, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta seem safe, while the uncertainty surrounding John Terry's injury is currently handing David Luiz the chance to cement a spot.

    Best options:
    Defender - Ivanovic (6.4)
    Midfielder - Hazard (10.9)
    Forward - Eto'o* (8.3)

    Tottenham
Fixtures (GW27-30): nor, CAR, che, ARS

Spurs' next two fixtures will attract plenty of investment, with Emmanuel Adebayor proving popular amongst the fantasy folk here. With Tim Sherwood's focus on attack, a clean sheet in GW29 away at Chelsea seems almost impossible, although the attacking threats of Walker and Vertonghen may tempt some. With uncertainty surrounding Christian Eriksen, Paulinho seems the best spurs midfield option. The emergence of Nabil Bentaleb may tempt some as a cheap 5th mid, with 2 assists in his last game against Newcastle. Up top, there is only one option - the one and only: Emmanuel Adebayor.

    Best options:
    Defender - Walker* (6.1)
    Midfielder - Paulinho* (6.6)
    Forward - Adebayor (8.1)

    Note:
    - All players I mentioned that have a * after their name are players I wouldn't transfer into my team. Those without a * are decent options in my opinion.
    - If Brighton beat Hull in their FA cup replay next week, WHU v HUL will go ahead. I didn't analyse these two teams as I fancy Hull to win.

    Cheers.

I've only watched one Cardiff game recently, last weeks against AVL. Noone was a massive threat and certainly looks like a decent player. Zaha is decent too but costs quite a lot more and is more likely to get subbed early.

Oh you know me so well! I was just running some analysis on them for anyone who is interested (nobody I should imagine). I'd be inclined to go for Berahino. Top goalscorer, more involved with the play and on some set pieces.

Do Evans to Fonte if you have cash to spare. Chambers is a risk since there is no guarantee he will start ahead of Clyne on that day.

You're set up very well for the blank in GW29!

Benteke -> RVP in GW29, funded by a Silva downgrade in GW28. Snoddy/Nolan decent options IMO

Is it worth doing Bony to Adebayor this week before the price rise or is it better to simply save the transfer this week?
Any chance Swansea could have their game rescheduled within the same week? In that case it might be better to get rid of a player with a confirmed blank.

    anyone mind weighing in?

    Boruc - Davis
    Ward - Chester - WILLIAMSON - Azpi - Demel
    Haz - Mata - YAYA - Lallana - COLBACK
    Suarez - RVP - Sturridge

    2 FT, 0.0m

    tomorrow: Williamson > MOlsson
GW28: Yaya > Paulinho or Nolan (depending on the outcome of the FA Cup match) and just play 4-3-2 (or 5-3-2 if Chester is back)
    GW29: Colback > Noone

leaving me 2 FT still to get ready for the DGWs and still field an XI in every GW

alternatively I could use a second FT in GW28 to ship out Colback for Noone ahead of time and just save for GW29..

    thoughts?

Go for it. But just keep in mind that the midfield slot will again be changed after GW 30 because of all the DGWs. So change accordingly based on the next 3 fixtures. Snoddy is my bet.

well whoever it is, be it Nolan or Paulinho (or a 3rd contender) will go straight back to Yaya likely (maybe Silva)

I'm currently doing all my planning by doing RVP > Aguero first in the transfer page before I move any other pieces around so I know I'm leaving enough money to work with

    Current squad:
    Cech Davis
    Kolarov Evans Koscielny Kolarov Ward
    Hazard Mata Cazorla Noone Puncheon
    Suarez Sturridge Bony
    2 FT

    GW27: Bony -> Adebayor
    GW28: Cazorla -> Lallana
    GW29: Sturridge -> RVP
(in addition in either 28 or 29 shift Kolarov -> a playing cheapie defender, e.g. Olsson, for gw 29)

    giving for 29:
    Cech
    Evans Ward Olsson
    Hazard Mata Lallana Puncheon Noone
    RVP Ade
