Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

I think there is too much uncertainty surrounding Torres/Drogba currently to choose one over the other, although it is a risk that could pay off with Chelsea's early fixtures if Torres looks like he's Villas Boas' first choice.

Feels like you can save a ton by spending 6-8 only of forwards and still get great return.

Then use that extra for a bigger pieces in the back. I might have a front three with no one over 7.5M.

Madness I know, but when Odem is scoring 10-15 points less last year than strikers priced more than 2X the value, think there is sense in it.

      Just as a option:

      Given Al Habs
      Luiz Komp Hanger Rafael Gibbs
      VDV Malouda NZogs Wilshere Sessegnon
      Ba Hoilett Zamora

Too much in defense, I know, but shows optional approaches to making a strong team in an unconventional way.

Downgrade the D and swap Hoilett/Ba for Odem.

Would bet Zamora/Ba/Odem (21M) will not be far off the points of Rooney/RVP/Torres (33M).

Certainly 11M will give you the tools in the rest of the team to make up that difference.

          Aalesund win.

Handicapping Bnei Yehuda could be worth a punt.

I’m trying to make sense of the likely impact of changes in bonus-point rules this year. My predictions:
    1. Being on a winning team will be more important. Chances of getting bonus points on a losing team will be minimal. Conclusion: it’ll be increasingly important to have a good number of players from teams who are likely to win more games, especially Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool and less players from newly promoted sides and cellar dwellars.
    2. Playing full games will be more important. This means that players who get subbed early might be a liability, like Van der Vaart, Valencia, Luiz, or Fabregas. Players coming back from an injury who only play 60-75 mins could be a liability too. Conclusion: select only players who usually play a full 90 mins.
    3. Looking at the rankings from last year, it stands out that top goalkeepers do unusually well (with Hart and Cech at 11 and 12 respectively out of all players). If the same holds for this year, then Hart and Cech will get more bonus points than Nani, Rooney, or Carroll. Hart and Cech would both get about 25 points more than they did last year. This would make Hart the most profitable player in FPL. Conclusion: goalkeepers will be more important this year than ever before; goalkeepers will get more bps; rotating two cheap goalkeepers (4.5-5) will be a losing strategy this year.
    4. Historically the subjective bonus points have been heavily biased towards British players who perform with heart and passions (hence disproportionately high bps for Adam, Carroll, Rooney, Lampard, Barton, etc.). This year, bps will be distributed more evenly across nationalities. Conclusion: buy less British players and more high-skill international players like Silva, Ba, Aguero, Enrique, Yaya Toure, Modric, Tevez, Odemwingie, etc.).

The game is going to be quite different this year! The team balance will need to be quite different from previous years.
Further conclusion: most RMTs are working on the false assumption that the same points distribution from last year will apply this year.

Anyone want to support or refute the above hypotheses?

New bonus point rules are laid out here: http://www.premierleague.com/page/EAIndex/0,,12306,00.html
They're not totally clear on how different indices are weighted. We'll have to wait to see how important a successful tackle or clean sheet are relative to a goal.

... and for clarification, by rankings last year, I mean the EA Sports player performance index: http://www.premierleague.com/page/PlayerPerformanceIndex

great post but speaking for myself I'd water down one or two of your conclusions a little because your thoughts only apply to bonus points and not goals and assists...also we don't really know if they were using the EA index last year (as a guide at least)

You're right that it's hard to make comparisons between last year's subjective bonus points and this year's EA Sports player performance index situation. The most important factors in the game will still be goals, assists, and clean sheets. But I think that the bonus point distribution will look pretty different this year. I think Hart will be a leading player, and I don't think I've seen him in a single RMT yet. He could be good value, compared with all these 12.0 players.

traditionally cheap keeper + expensive defender beats expensive keeper + cheap defender because of the save points plus you are much more likely to rotate the keepers

that's a theory and not everyone will agree of course but I think it's solid

so it's hard to know how big an impact the new bonus will make although I certainly agree with your reasoning

the central point is that it's not enough to look for the "best value" goalkeeper...you need to look for the best possible squad

so you can't compare Hart + £4.0m keeper with 2 cheap rotating keepers because Hart + ANOther costs more...the other guy has cash to spend elsewhere

so thinking back to the start of last season would you have picked:

              (a) Hart + nobody

              or

              (b) Foster + Robinson ( with average better fixtures and more save points to offset fewer clean sheets) + cash

so it's not necessarily an easy decision...hope that explains it better

You're definitely right that the game's about squad balance, and it's hard to get balance when you have a 7.0 keeper. But I'm anticipating that this year the keepers will get saves and considerably more bonus points, so will outperform the defenders. We'll have to see how it works out, but if Hart is the highest scoring player in the whole game by the end of the season, everyone will say he was a bargain at 7.0. Keeper rotation has been the winning formula in previous seasons, but I get the feeling that this season could be different, even if it does mean downgrading a midfielder (and there are plenty of good midfielders this year for around 6.5).
It might mean going for Hart/Cech + 4-4.5 keeper plus more rotation of cheap defenders or cheap midfielders. Thanks for your thoughts!

He's meant to be Lampard and Adam is meant to be Barton.

I wanted Lampard in the middle, so changed to two others so I could swap them round (pointless, I know).

Cheers for the nonsense comment though, much appreciated

I love it... though completely destroying it with Arsenal (I've won everything 3 seasons running, with a non-losing streak in the league of 2 seasons)

              Akinfeev

              S.Ramos - Varane - Chiellini - Bale

              Fabregas - Sissoko

Ganso - Van Persie - Pastore

              Aguero

notable subs: Vermaelen, Robben, Ramsey, Rodwell, Hazard, Lukaku

Here's a thought...never mind what your team will be for gw1...but what should your team be just now?

I'm looking at Bent, Albrighton, Dunne (say), N'Zogbia and Given which could potentially give me 5 Villa players

Also Tevez, Kompany AND £1.5m spare cash to allow an Albrighton to Yaya switch

The point is that you might want to start with 4 Villa players and you don't know who'll be fit or picked...if you set your team up as I suggest you can leave this as a possibility right up to the deadline

    thoughts?
