Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

Starting was an unusual front three of Fernando Torres flanked by Salomon Kalou on the left and Yossi Benayoun on the right. Florent Malouda was on the left so starting captain Frank Lampard moved to a less accustomed right berth. Josh McEachran was again the deeper of the midfield three and there was a second appearance for centre-back Slobodan Rajkovic following the Wycombe game. He was paired with Branislav Ivanovic.

The second-half side was 11 different players with young Nathaniel Chalobah partnering John Terry and Billy Clifford and Yury Zhirkov both in midfield. Didier Drogba led the line with Nicolas Anelka left and Daniel Sturridge right.

Hope there are other Chelsea fans or Chelsea squad scouts,

The ball didn't cross the line...pretty poor from Chesea

West Brom were pretty awful last night vs Portland's 2nd team...until they scored around 65' they created very little...Thomas the only one that looked a threat

I just think with a new manager at the helm, who likes to attack. It'll give torres a new lease of life, and give him some confidence. They paid £50m for him, so he should start most games, and be the no.1 striker, whilst delivering the goods.

His form was poor last year, but on his day he's lethal and i fully expect next season to be his time to shine

Not too confident, but if he doesn't, i can always ship out for Bosingwa.

He's just such a beast, i feel he'll get around 6-8 goals this season.

Whereas Bosingwa's more likely to deliver the assists. Who knows 😕

I wasn't tempted by Barton at 4.5m last season, so don't know if i will be at 6m

I'd gladly do Dembele > Zamora if he was on pens but alas that isn't the case, so i save some money instead.

Kenny and Alcaraz. Fair enough, i'll change em to 4m defenders and invest the money in my midfield.

            Cheers CT 🙂

Looks a decent shout at this stage! Still a fair way to go before things get underway of course.

      For my money:

Al-Habsi may be a better foil for Given at 4.5 - just a personal call there.

Not sure at all about Chelsea back four, so Ivanovic could be a risk.

VDV's fixtures look prohibitive when it comes to such a big investment.

I've got Dembele, but I'm concerned he might be a rotation risk.

What are your thoughts about Evra? Just out of interest - Utd's fixtures are really tough and an attacking option may be better than a defensive one.

I like Kenny for his potential save points. I have wigan cover in Alcaraz, so not to keen on Al Habsi

Ivanovic is a rotation risk i agree. Hopefully nearer the time that fpl opens, i'll have a better idea of who will be 1st choice at RB, out of him and Bosingwa.

VDV will hog everything, so anything that Spurs do get, he's likely to be involved. Kind of going for him as my big hitter from midfield, as i already have Torres so it would be too much to get frank aswell.

Also see more fpl potential with City for their cleansheets, as opposed to their attacking options.

I think Evra is a decent shout. Hardish fixtures would equate to tighter contests, so less goals, so more chance of a cleansheet. (Don't know whether this makes sense or not)

Dembele is just my preference, as i like him as a player, and am hopeful of him and Bobby z being the 2 men upfront for Jol

Fair one if you have good reasons for all your picks, just looking to feedback tbh. Not sure I'd be going for Evra because of his difficult games, but each to their own 🙂

Equally I'll hold fire on Spurs, but as you say, VDV does seem to be at the centre of everything they do going forward.

Pardew is looking to sell or loan out Ranger. In fact the Blackpool chairman admitted the other week that he's close to replacing DJ Campbell with him.

Shane Ferguson will get a few run outs at LB and LW as sub appearances.

I personally don't see the value in Bent. Villa have lost their two best suppliers in Young and Downing and I'm approaching Villa like Birmingham last year - good for cleanies, but not so good going forward.

Obviously Bent is better than the striker B'ham had, but he's far more expensive as well.

Pretty good apart from that - not sure I'd have Feguson, but he may be a bonus merchant, who knows! May also be worth finding the cash to get sessegnon instead of Gardner. And Vidic may be a little too much of an investment in Utd's defence with their starting fixtures.

No doubt that Bent could easily prove me very wrong!

I don't see the bonus/big totals for Bent, so I think I'll leave alone at 10, which is a price I'd expect bonus and assist potential as well as goals - but he's got such a proven record for scoring and such a good run of games that it's understandably difficult to ignore him.

    . Malouda - Albrighton - N'Zogbia(vc) - O'Hara (Sinclair)

Bardsley and Sinclair got Home games coming up after GW1.

After 2 hours thinking, here is what i came up:

    . . . . . . . . Given (Kenny)

    . . A.Cole – Luiz – Kompany (Bardsley – Simpson)

    . Malouda – Albrighton – N’Zogbia(vc) – O’Hara (Sinclair)

    . . . . . . Bent – Suarez(c) (Holt)

Bardsley and Sinclair got Home games coming up after GW1.
    A.Villa got really easy schedule.
Trying to double pts on 2 Chealsea defs – a differential maybe?!

    Ur thoughts appreciated..

Midfield, bring in: N'zog and Barton and downgrade Ba to Holt.
Leaving me .5m in the bank to do N'zog to Yaya.

Ireland - very tempted for Villa coverage

Thanks, I think I will give Arteta a go, his stats for starts i didn't think were too awful last season and he did start to pick up.

Have a spare 6m slot in midfield as things stand and no Villa attacking coverage - Murphy seems a boring pick and then I turn to Joey Barton and wonder. Will he be on pens without Nolan?
