The FPL Bonus Points – Moving the Goalposts?

While the Fantasy Premier League player list is taking up the bulk of our time, sapping our energies and thinking – some will no doubt have noticed that Wednesday’s launch also brought several rule changes. One such tweak involved the allocation of Bonus Points. The “man in the stand” from the Press Association is no longer the “judge and jury” behind these points – from this season the FPL have gone back to a method driven by an Index, fuelled by statistics that measure player actions and team performance.

The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index (EA SPORTS PPI) will now be the recipient of our post-match wrath – although given that cold hard statistics will be behind it, it’s going to be more difficult to justify the bile.

Such a change inevitably poses some questions but for us at Fantasy Football Scout, it also gives us the opportunity to offer a new feature to offer Members a helping hand.

What is the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index?

The Premier League site offers a full explanation of this right here so we won’t go into too much detail. Effectively the index uses an algorithm to provide a single value which offers an appraisal of a player’s performance in a Premier League match. That algorithm takes into account a variety of statistics gathered from a match reflecting player actions on the pitch such as – shots, clearances, saves etc. Goals scored, assists and clean sheets are perhaps the biggest factors in the calculation of the index score but crucially, the outcome of the match is also very significant. A player in the winning team is far more likely to register a high EA SPORTS PPI score than a player on the losing side.

What does this mean for the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points?

It’s hard to say. While we are likely to have more visibility on the factors that affect the award of the Bonus Points, it’s still very difficult to predict which players will benefit next season. The fact that winning performances are crucial suggests that players amongst the top sides will be far more likely to earn big totals of Bonus Points than those turning out for struggling sides. To put this into perspective, Charlie Adam had the highest Bonus Point total in the Fantasy Premier League game last season. However, he ranked just 20th overall in the EA SPORTS PPI.

It’s also notable that, out of the top 25 EA SPORTS PPI ranked players last season, 10 of them were Man United or Chelsea players, 3 were at Man City, 2 at Liverpool and 1 at Arsenal. Charlie Adam was the only player from a relegated club in the top 30. Scott Parker – the player of the year last season – was not in the top 10 midfielders and was ranked 70th overall.

The jury is very much out on the effectiveness of the EA SPORTS PPI then but we can only really speculate on how it will distribute the FPL Bonus Points until the season is underway. One thing we’re pretty sure on – we noticed last season that goalscorers were big beneficiaries of Bonus Point awards – our guess is that this will continue with the implementation of the EA SPORTS PPI. Goalscorers on winning sides are set for regular gains then. Is that any different to the old PA Sports method? Only time will tell.

How can Fantasy Football Scout help?

At least now we know that the statistics available to our Members have a definite impact on a player’s likelihood of earning FPL Bonus Points. Our Members already have access to the statistics that contribute to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data. By interrogating last season’s data now, you can already get a view on the top performers across the statistics that matter. We will be publishing members articles to aid this process too.

As you no doubt will have heard, Fantasy Football Scout are also contributing articles to the FPL this season. “The Scout” will examine the Bonus Point allocation each gameweek and attempt to breakdown the factors behind the awards using the EA SPORTS PPI data.

We’re going to provide something new however. Something a little extra…

The Scout ICT Index – Influence, Creativity and Threat

We have a new way for Members to read and analyse statistics this season. We’ve built our own Fantasy Football Index – the Scout “ICT” Index. This measures the performance of Premier League players in three key areas – Influence, Creativity and Threat. The first of those, a player’s Influence, will use similar performance indicators to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data, although our algorithm will be different.

Our index score for Influence won’t take the results into consideration and will therefore offer a level playing field to those players who suffer defeat in a match. In this way our Index will hopefully be effective at finding influential players within struggling clubs, but should still offer our Members a view on which players are more likely to score highly in the EA SPORTS PPI and therefore be in line for Bonus Points. While the FPL Bonus Points arriving “the morning after matches” – our members can get access to our ICT index once we update our data – often just 10-20 minutes after the final whistle has blown.

In basic terms the ICT index will help to make our Opta data more digestible. It will offer one single index score for Influence, one for Creativity and one for Threat. These will help to measure a player’s importance to their team and to a match, a player’s likelihood to earn assists and to score goals, or at least get in goalscoring situations. Those three figures will then be combined to create a single ICT Index score to measure a player’s overall performance contribution from a Fantasy perspective.

Index scores will be generated on a gameweek basis and cumulatively over the season. The full Opta data will still be available of course, but Members will now have an easy route to identify how players are performing across the key statistics.

The index, like any football index, will be far from perfect. There will be tweaks along the way. Plenty of discussions as we go. Even so, the ICT Index is already providing us with plenty of talking points and insight behind the scenes and we think it’s going to be a valuable addition for our Members. It will also give us plenty of material to discuss in a series of new Members articles.

We currently have the ICT Index in test and will be creating new tables and new sidebar widgets that will give Members quick access to the top performers on our Index on a gameweek basis and over the season as a whole. These widgets will also form the basis of our new dashboard available to Members when they log into the Members area.

Keep ‘em peeled for more news on this in the next few weeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Apologies if this has already been asked before in a previous post since FPL came back online but... is there a way to view a full list of players with all their stats on show at once?

You used to be able to do this in previous seasons but i can't seem to get a list other than the ones with one stat at a time...

Any help would be grand 🙂

Yeah, seems there's a weighting towards winning in the overall index. But I don't think that should affect a weekly score too much - I mean, if an individual game ends in a draw, 3 guys still have to be awarded BPs.

Shane Ferguson, he'll be played mostly at LB even though he's really a LW. I was playing with him a few weeks ago when he was back here in 5-a-side and he raped us all even though he looks like a 12 year old.

He's good, but wouldn't even bother looking at him FPL wise. A few subs appearances here and there is all you'll get.

MMW: Monk swansea captain(?),bench fodder may play week 2-3 if needs be.
Buszacky on the basis off Tarrbet leaving and no other options currently.
Ireland a punt may not be there if pre season doesnt go his way.

Suarez easily worth the risk given his ownership and fixtures

        Demi:
Rooney to RVP week 4. Pretty horrid start. Possible new team to adjust early doors and RVP got 2 pens to score in his fixtures last year v Liverpool & United.

A gamble worth taking for me.Then Rooney > RVP week 4.

I've gone for a very similar solution in defence. Two very good defenders and the choice of one from three cheapos each week.

Personally I've gone absolutely bargain basement with a QPR, Norwich and Swansea combo in defence because their fixtures blend nicely up to the first wildcard, but I quite like your selection, too.

As you say, plenty of time for things to rearrange. Ireland is probably a bit of a concern with N'Zogbia likely to join and I'm not sold on Buzaky (who you'll almost certainly bench almost all of the time).

All told: very similar to the way I've set my team up, so I like it!

Ya if I could squeeze out another 4.5 mil i may go for someone like Moses for opening day.

Keep changing my opinion on Sinclair. He could easily flop ala Dorrans and struggled badly before when on loan in the league at Wigan. Might downgrade him to soneone like Dyer and Upgrade elsewhere.

My compromise there has been to go with Sessegnon in midfield, whilst conceding Dembele for Zamora.

I'd be much more comfortable with Zamora, but I'm much happier with Sessegnon. My solution there might be to downgrade Lampard to Malouda, but I've not got a clear idea of Chelsea's midfield in the slightest 🙂

If Chelsea play as they are A Cole will be my only cover for them. Prob get VDV in.

Def will get VDV for Malouda if Malouda plays as one of the mid 3. Even with fixtures.

If only VDV had slightly better fixtures.

True enough. I'm probably going to avoid VDV until fixtures improve and I have a sneaking suspicion that Bale could be a point magnet - not based on anything concrete, mind.

Figured out where my extra cash is from - I've got Luiz instead of Cole. Obviously a rotation risk though so may have to find the money to upgrade depending on how things pan out.

Find it difficult to go with just one Chelsea player given their fixtures warrant three. But as you say, it's a nightmare to find the right player for them outside of the defence.

Just been doing some research, and the FPL only used the Actim system in the 05-06 season. Was hoping that it carried on into the 06-07 season so we could see player scores on the player history thingy, but no such luck. Incidently, FabregaS got 54 BPs in the 06-07 season. We shall not see his like again. 🙁

Dyer is very good, but goes missing sometimes. When I've seen him play (in the Championship) he's always looked one of the most dangerous players, but also the least keen to get involved.

If he can put some form together he could be very good.

I did a little scouting on this earlier and settled on Stephen Dobbie as well. Although, I had Andrew Crofts (NOR) in there for a while, but I'm starting with Holt and didn't want to double up on Norwich attack

for what its worth, I found this encouraging: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/footballnation/swansea-city-fc/2011/06/03/stephen-dobbie-out-to-make-most-of-premier-chance-91466-28812550/

Seems Dobbie has the manager's backing and confidence, and he was on pens at least for part of last year.

    Reina, Al-Habsi
Kompany, Rafael, Enrique (Hughes, Zat Knight)
    Yaya, Modric, Albrighton, Sinclair (Marveaux)
    Suarez (VC) RVP (C) Zamora

I've got Modric in as I can see great things for him if he does end up at Chelsea, If Enrique goes to Liverpool then I won't be so sure about Reina as a first choice keeper, but for forwards I really can't see past Suarez and RVP as long as they're both fit at the start of the season and Suarez isn't rested after the Copa. Zamora/Odem/Sturridge (if loaned out again) are a good shout for cheaper third keeper i reckon

    Any thoughts?

Can anyone tell me why Alcatraz is so hard to leave(out) for Wigan, I know they have a favorable start but I don't get why he's in so many teams. 4.5 for a guy who had 1 goal and 1 assist last year seems steep, and oh yeah he plays in defence FOR WIGAN!

Sure, 5times, but please bare in mind, my recent FPL record is NOT good. I finished around 4K a few years back, but since then have been anywhere between 50K and 180K, so please keep that in mind when listening to my opinion!! 😛

I actually like your team. Don't think I'd choose Modric myself. Lovely player, but doesn't score big in FPL terms. And I don't think you have an obvious couple of big hitters who you could confidently rotate the captaincy between.

Personally, I don't like doubling up in attack - you're a wee bit reliant on Newcastle scoring every game week with both Barton and Ba in your team, but as individuals I think they're good solid picks.

Also be aware, a lot of people think Saurez will miss the start of the season because of being rested after the Copa America. I'm not so sure of this myself, but it's a distinct possibility!

But generally speaking, it's a good team imo! If it were mine, I'd only be making a couple of minor adjustments 🙂

Finishing between 50k and 180k would give me a great shot of beating my buddys so your opinion is alot better than mine. So swapping Ba for Beckford a possibility IYO? I'm thinking Suarez will be back for game 1 with 3 weeks rest, plus the pool will only have a game a week so not worried bout burnout. Was thinking captain options of Suarez and Bent.

Beckford seems a reasonably popular choice. Some will warn you off given Everton's recent history of starting campaigns badly, but they do have some decent fixtures early on. FFS did a scout report on Beckford - could be worth a read! http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/07/04/great-expectations-jermaine-beckford/

FWIW, I have Ba myself, although that could of course change!

Evra got a lot of performance index points for a fairly underwhelming season (zero bonus points, just one goal and only two assists).

The rest this summer should do him the world of good after a packed few years. That said, not sure I'd have him straight away with Utd's fixtures. Tricky one.

Got a current team of the following:

Too much cash tied up in defence just now. Ekotto and Distin just don''t offer value for my money and you'd probably only go with Samba and Enrique if they get their moves.

Good value throughout. Personally not sure about Bent, because Villa's best supporting players have moved on, but his high ranking on the performance index at least bodes well for higher bonus returns (not that 14 last season was too bad, but it could have been better.)

Don't know who Ferguson is, but looks like you're happy to play with four or five at the back, so maybe you wouldn't need him or Holt every week.

Skrtel's not guaranteed a start despite playing every minute last season. As a Liverpool fan I'd have Agger and Carra ahead of him as starters when fit. If Enrique comes in for Liverpool I'd definitely have him instead - cheaper and an assist threat, doubts over Luiz as well, no idea what AVB's first choice defence is yet really..
