Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

    ***Double GW's***

Last season I recall a few of them being set beforehand. Just went through the fixtures for the season and no DGW's are listed. What gives? Any insight here?

yeah there were 2 gameweeks last year where there were a few teams who played twice from what i remember. So the 2 wildcards could come in very useful in a similar scenario. Its kinda why i'm not playing it just now even though i'm gonna miss out on risers unless i take points hits.

There were none listed at the outset last season. There are only DGWs after fixtures are cancelled for some reason.

Actually in the 09/10 season there was a double gameweek in week 2 or 3 which was set out before the start of the season. Had something to do with internationals or cup matches or something.

Pablitto, well I've already wildcarded (third wildcard when you think about it), but need to sign the big lads, before price rises, otherwise i won't be able to get them.
A 4pt hit isn't that bad, as long as you not doing 4pt hit each week. and think of it this way - who will score more next week - carroll awtoay at stoke (note they concede alot of headed goals, i think second highest last week) or dezko at home to wigan (6 goals in 3 matches).
I think it's worth the hit myself

Upgrade N'zog to Young or Walcott and you will have a very nice team indeed. If you choose to do Young consider doing it tonight, N'zog going down, Young's price going up and will continue to rise over 2 weeks. Worth the risk on the money you'll make/save alone

I don't think it would be a good move had i not had Torres and had say Bent. But the problem I had was Torres, who will drop like a stone over 2 knee jerky weeks - at least .2 probably .3. Dzeko will rise .2, to .4, meaning he has a sell on value of .1 or .2 more than i bought him for. So at the very least .4 or .5 better off having made the transfer now.

It's immaterial whether there are injuries in the int break cos I would have got Torres out anyway at 11 mil price range, he just had to go. It's a big risk whether or not Dzeko plays v Wigan, but seeing as I had two freebies, worst case scenario is I save/make a lot of money. I have an extra transfer to rectify it if need be.

Bangig my head against a wall here

    Heres my current team:

Given/Al Habsi - Happy with this.

Baines, Bosingwa, Enrique, De Laet, Simpson - Slight question over Baines at 8m

Moses, Silva, Sess, O'Hara, Formica - My main concern position

Rooney, Bent, Suarez - Slight question over Bent

I really feel like I need to beef up the mids with a player that I can play every week and are going to get good returns as my cunning picks of Ses and O'Hara have been useless.

    Question is do I

    A) Downgrade bent to 6-7.5 striker and get a 9-10 mid like Walcott/Young for O'Hara/Sess etc

    B) Downgrade Baines to a 4.5-5 for the upgraded mid

    C) leave it alone

Baines is off pens now but is still a good scorer, but there should be lots of value in the 4.5-5.5 range in defenders.

Bent has great fixtures coming up as well though ad there are no obvious mid-price strikers that come to mind

I may have to accept that fantasy football management is not my strongest fantasy suit

Nah, well unless there is a load of injuries after the break. I have 2 freebies which I will use. Need some A Young and Walcott action.

Rooney and Young saved me my wildcard. Anyone else not using their wildcard?

I have 2 transfer I need to do and possibly more after the international games so maybe I'll be forced to use it by Gw4.

Gut says not to use it so I'm sticking with my team.

No Dzeko, No Mata, No problem hopefully.

i need to take an 8 point hit to make a couple of changes but those im bringing in are unlikely to rise. i need to move wellbeck but had already done torres to rvp.. so its 4 points. the other is arteta to walcott though it will wait so i cant keep an eye on any other injuries etc
