Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Arsenal, Chelsea, tottenham, fulham are all London clubs, they all are in different parts of London and as such most are named after the burough they are in. There are a LOT of clubs in London and it's outskirts, none of them represent the city. Due to the close proximity of the clubs there is a lot of rivalry between them.

Equally the same can be said about rivalry when it comes to Manchester city and utd, neither represents the city of Manchester officially and to suggest one does would greatly annoy the fans of the other club.

Just to be clear, all football clubs to the best of my knowledge (there's probably some obscure exception) are privately run and owned and not in anyway officially affiliated with the town/city they are located in, however in most cases there is only one football club in a town/city and thus they represent the place by default

    Given
    Kompany, Enrique, Smalling, Bosingwa
    Nasri, Henderson, Young
    Suarez, Dzeko, Rooney

Subs: Vorm, R Taylor, Ferguson, Tiote

    0.3 left in the bank

Pretty chuffed with my starting XI; however, other than Vorm, my subs are all Newcastle. Any suggestions on how to vary it a little?

De Laet is £4m at Norwich and apparently nailed on. Could go N Dyer instead of Tiote though this then gives you 2 Swansea.

You may want a bit more money to spend on the bench though. I'm not convinced Henderson is a good pick. Brunt or Anderson for .5m less may be better and gives a little to improve the bench. You have a defender from each of the clubs likely to finish in the top 4. You may want to lose one of them as there are decent 4.5m options such as Brown who rotates perfectly with Newcastle. Maybe get rid of Smalling as his game time is in doubt as soon as players come back from injury.

Ay - you could be right Goose. Perhaps they have revamped the whole "price inflation/deflation" system which is why predicted price rises/falls have not occurred yet.

Although this could be just a blip!

No he'll go up by 0.1 tonight (if price rises are sorted) and then his counter will go back to zero until he reaches 100%. Then he will rise by 0.1 again.

Can't believe I'm actually going to get a double rise out of Matt Jarvis. Hope he's not the only one as I should have around 8 players going up tonight.

Don't even have room for everyone, because I'm yet to choose between Silva and Nasri I've had to leave out Anderson who is being drafted in by a lot more people than Silva. I could yet want him, but will have to just have him at 6.1 if I do.

3 crappy GWs has given leaders a lead of 93, 73, 68 and 83 in my mini leagues. The wildcard has come out.

    RMWCT Please:
    Given Vorm
Bosingwa, Hughes, Kompany, De Laet, Simpson
    Dyer, Young, Nasri, Brunt, ?
    Rooney, Dzeko, Suarez

I have 6.3 to spent on last mid. Anderson, Jarvis, Cabaye and Walters? Who to take? Any other options?

Sneijder said earlier ''I do not want to leave Inter, I'm good with my life at the moment.'' Whether we should beleive that or not is a different matter.

I wouldn't be surprised if we signed somebody before the end of the window, even just a squad player but Sneijder coming would surprise me at this stage.

Yep, with that and that the inflated prices the game feels even tougher than last year. I don't think the casual player has cottoned to the fact that all the bonus now goes to the goalscorers (although this was often the case last year anyhow). This was apparent as early as GW1.

Lets not talk about the technical issues, which now includes price changes!

Resisted the temptation last night but am now on the brink of wildcarding.

    Current team:

    Given, Begovic
Boswinga, Enrique, Lescott, Baines, S Taylor
Silva, Sinclair, Moses, Brunt, O Hara
    RVP, Suarez, Graham

Of this Lescott, Baines, Sinclair and Graham all look like they could lose value. RVP doesn't need many transfers out so I'm worried he could go down as well.

WC team to try and make money:

    Vorm, Krul
Boswinga, Enrique, S Taylor, Ward, R Taylor
Silva, Young, N Dyer, Petrov, Anderson
    Suarez, Dzeko, Rooney

This team basically consists of the most likely risers I can afford while keeping the risers I already have.

    GW4 team:

    Given, Begovic
Boswinga, Enrique, S Taylor, Kompany, Baines
    Silva, Anderson, Brunt, Cabaye, Moses
    RVP, Suarez, Holt

£1.5m in bank (plus hopefully a little more)
Proposed GW4 team is not final but with the wildcard I can of course tweak to my hearts content. Baines may drop so taking him out and then putting back in for .1m less hopefully. Hoping Kompany and Holt also drop making them cheaper acquisitions (and potentially long term ones) Will then look to do a free double transfer in week 6 to ditch Baines for Brown and upgrade midfield or attack (e.g. Cabaye to Mata or Holt to Dzeko)

    Thoughts?

Totalfpl have him at 72%, it was 60 something earlier. Considering his price and the number of high scoring cheap defenders so far I reckon a lot more people could take him out to cram Utd/City attacking players in

          Have I understood you acm.

In a wildcard you can buy players that are about to rise and sell them before the end locking in the increase in value.

I would have thought at the end of the period FPL would look at the starting and finishing team and ignored the intervening transfers?

No you get to keep the price rises. However, as you only get 50% of the price increase and it is rounded down rather than up you will need a player to go up by .2m to get a .1m profit on selling.

It is frustrating and at the same time exciting that everyone seems like their gonna have Given or someone of similar price, Bosingwa Kompany Enrique and probably a couple of cheapies, Silva/Nasri and that front 3. It's frustrating if your trying to catchup but it's exciting as you have to take a risk on a differential or 2.

On the one hand I love the high prices (also, when you find a bargain like Dzeko it is incredibly satisfying), but they needed more in variations in certain price ranges. e.g there's not many alternatives to Moses or Nzog. Everyone other team has Moses and/ or Dyer in it because there are so few options available. FPL's appeal is partly all about agonising over transfers and having tons of options available in every bracket.
