The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – It’s About Time

With just five games played out, Saturday satisfaction always looked unlikely. It’s fitting however, that with the big guns yet to be primed, we saw a handful of mid-price players come to the fore and deliver long overdue returns. Fitting and just little bit painful.

Jamie O’Hara started proceedings, blasting a dramatic equaliser to earn Wolves an unlikely point. Full of industry, creativity and threat, O’Hara has been an influential figure, without delivering returns for those brave enough to take a punt. Subject of our recent Members’ Monitor article and, just a couple of gameweek’s later, O’Hara has at last broke his duck. It was coming.

The start of something special? With City up next and three away games in four, it seems unlikely. Even so, O’Hara could yet figure on our radars should McCarthy get Wolves earning victories again.

A few hours later, Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – another mid-price midfielder who has failed to live up to his pre-season billing, earned Steve Bruce three points with a victory at the Reebok.

Ironically, Sessegnon’s first goal of the season coincided with his shift back to the flank, as Bruce paired Connor Wickham and Nicklas Bendtner in his forward line. The Dane later converted a second for the Black Cats; Sessegnon providing the assist and fetching a belated 10-point return for the few thousand Fantasy managers who had kept the faith. Expect bonus points to follow on Monday morning and, with three home games in four to come, suddenly “Sess” is back in the game and blinking bright.

While Sunderland prevailed at Bolton, Yohan Cabaye also fired his first goal of the season to hand North East rivals Newcastle the points. The Frenchman is another Fantasy prospect that’s been touted as overdue returns. Having delivered just a couple of assists thus far, Cabaye gleefully converted to keep the Magpies buoyant and Wigan resigned to the relegation spots.

Unlike Sessegnon, Cabaye’s stock seems unlikely to rise from today’s success. Alan Pardew is now set to steer his happy ship through choppy waters, three away trips in four with Stoke, City and United presenting three of the toughest destinations around. Cabaye’s next significant return could be a good few weeks away.

Is anyone out there feeling smug? Is there really any Fantasy manager with O’Hara, Sessegnon and Cababye tucked away in their lineup? There can’t be many and yet, there will be plenty who have owned at least one of them previously, now pondering what might have been.

Having been threatening to return all season, the trio chose today to get off the mark – a day which seems set to see such modest scoring for many. That only fuels the frustration and makes their late delivery all the more difficult to accept.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      hindsight is a wonderful thing.

i dont own Suarez only because i could not squeeze him in. I was worried about him going into this GW but did have a sneeky feeling that Norwich were not going to get destroyed based on previous results....so was kinda hoping for that

just watched the game and Suarez could have had a HT - all in all....

on Saturday morning (pre deadline), Suarez was the right Capt choice imo - just didnt work out this time.

Right, that's it, Suarez is dead to me. Had him as a differential for ages and captained him this week - has there ever been a less clinical striker?? No-one else has the number of chances he does with so little return, it even ruins his BP chances. Gonna upgrade Ramires to Lampard and swap Suarez for a 5.5 striker, anyone who can put a ball in the net will do.

    Rant over.

Suarez shot me into 1st last year as the reds dominated the end of last season, also saw him dominate in the Copa America. He'll make good, it's just a matter of when. If Rooney doesn't score in the next few games, the talk will be how he's rubbish. So Irritating.

Suarez scoring particularly well at the back end of last season is a myth. There were a couple of fixtures, but largely he flattered to deceive. Pool were thrashing teams and it was Kuyt and Maxi hoovering the points, not Suarez.

They priced him at only 9.5 for a reason.

Also, how can anyone say that bringing in Suarez was a no-brainer and then claim not to have seen him play?

Pool we're 12th before signing Suarez, and shot to up to 6th. Anyone who claims that Suarez didn't make an impact, must not have seen him play. Maxi had a couple (2) of fixtures where he was brilliant. Suarez brought in alot of points for me.

yes very irritating. Did the 'suarez is a winger' brigade not see his technique for his final 'almost goal' from Gerrards direct ball? Incredible technique and only an incredible save prevented a goal. I don't have suarez and I felt very nervous about that yesterday morning. I was relieved to see him have an extremely unlucky game.

    Rooney for VP?

    Given (Ruddy)
    Bosingwa Kompany Enrique (Brown, Simpson)
    Nani Silva Petrov Bannan (Dyer)
    Rooney© Aguero Adebayor

Just dumped Rooney for VP for this gameweek. Didn't think I would ever drop Rooney this year but here are the reasons:

    - Rooney dropping deep with Hernandez playing up top.
    - Both on pens and free kicks
    - VP better run of games
    - VP looked very sharp last week

    Is this a stupid move?

Just caught up with yesterday's action.

Suarez could easily have had 12-15 points out of that game, it's just how it goes.

He was still a good captain choice (if you see what I mean).

      i disagree

i think he was a good choice to bring in (hindsight or not hindsight)

but a captain needs at least some kind of history of double figure scores to justify making captain

im actually thinking of going against my philosophy the week after and captaining ade (unless he scores double figures this week and i don't have to go against it!)

you're right about suarez but he'll have to hurry up for you, his fixtures toughen up after the swansea game in 2 weeks!

It was obvious that Suarez wasn't going to score much from that match. I know he had a lot of opportunities, but that's the thing with Suarez - he isn't clinical. We've witnessed it throughout the whole season thus far. There have been times where he has played very well without scoring large (or scoring at all), so before the match, I sorta knew that the max he would score from this match was a goal. That's why I don't understand all the comments saying "How on earth were we supposed to know Suarez wasn't going to score?" The same applies with Moses. He's played well throughout the season without scoring, but I don't see anyone going around saying "How we were supposed to know that Moses wasn't going to score?"

I get what people thought before the match regarding him not scoring but having watched the game he could have easily got a hat trick. You can't legislate for hitting the post twice and a couple of top drawer saves. It's the best he has played this season and if he played like that in every match he'll score mega points.

I agree that he isnt always the most clinical. However, on another day yesterday (by which i mean probably more often than not playing like he played) he would have come away with at least a goal and likely a couple.

Comparing him to moses isnt really fair to either party. Moses has been a little unfortunate to get no scoring points so far. However, he isnt in the same league as Suarez talent wise, and he plays for Wigan.

I would say this, i was tempted to bring in Suarez, but didnt, i went for sturridge in the end. But i dont think i would have given Suarez the captaincy. He's capable of big scores, but liverpool havent got themselves sorted so far this season. Maybe in the next couple of games.....

Any indication on Woodgate's fitness for today's game?
I'm not hopeful, but as ever, the Stoke website is pretty lacking in definitive team news.
    TEAM NEWS

Tony Pulis will hand a late fitness test to former Arsenal midfielder Jermaine Pennant after he was ruled out of Thursday's European victory against Maccabi Tel-Aviv with a hamstring problem.

However, fellow former Gunners team-mate Matthew Upson will be hoping to start after impressing in his last two starts against Fulham and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

Bosnian ace Asmir Begovic is expected to be reinstated in goal at the expense of Thomas Sorensen, whilst Jonathan Woodgate is hoping to feature after sitting out last Saturday's win against Fulham.

Robert Huth and Andy Wilkinson will both be hoping to get the nod at right back; after both featuring in the Europa League earlier in the week.

In midfield Matthew Etherington should resume on the left wing, with the two central midfield berths going to either Glenn Whelan, Rory Delap, Dean Whitehead and Wilson Palcios.

Kenwyne Jones and Cameron Jerome both staked claims for starting roles in London with goals on Thursday, but Pulis may recall Peter Crouch and Jon Walters to spearhead his attack.

Mamady Sidibe and Danny Higginbotham may be named amongst the substitutes after making their returns from long term injuries earlier this month.

Morning everyone why oh why did Moses have to drop in value .1 short now of my original plan of Moses and Krul out for Walters and Begovic. So change of plan needed still planning to do Walters in for Moses the question is what do I do with my 2nd transfer, Mata out for Vdv or get rid of either N.Taylor or R.Taylor for cheap Stoke defender (can't afford Shawcross) if the latter who is the safest defender to plump for, cheers guys

Cunning Stunts had an interesting post the other day, trying to guess the British 2012 Olympic Team.

I thought it was hard, considering all the rules the 3 FA's has put together.

Instead, this is the team I would WANT to see (rules: 18 player squad, 15 players must be born after January 1st 1989).

    GK: Joe Hart*
    RB: Kyle Walker
    CB: Phil Jones
    CB: Chris Smalling
    LB: Kieran Gibbs
    RM: Theo Walcott
    CM: Scott Parker*
    CM: Jack Wilshere
    LM: Gareth Bale (Wales)
    FW: Danny Welbeck
    FW: Wayne Rooney*

Subs: Declan Rudd (GK), Steven Caulker (CB), Craig Cathcart (LB) (Northern Ireland), Tom Cleverley (CM), Jordan Henderson (CM), Andy Carroll (FW), Daniel Sturridge (FW)

    * senior players
